The childbirth education course gave me a really clear picture of what to expect from my hospital birth and what some of the choices I might have to make would entail. The knowledge I gained from the class allowed me to advocate for myself effectively during labor and ask clear questions of my medical team when they made a suggestion. This allowed me to have a really positive birth experience as a first time mom! I met Jess through prenatal yoga at iShine in Huntersville, NC. I was 7 weeks pregnant at the time with my first child. After class she mentioned there was a spot left in her childbirth education class. My husband and I signed up for the three week, 6 hour course and after the second class we hired Jess as our doula. I followed Jessica from one yoga studio to another because I just loved her classes so much. She has a way of explaining each pose so that you can do them with your eyes closed. Jessica is amazing! I first met her for her prenatal yoga series offered at a local studio and loved her right away. Her energy and passion for all things pregnancy and birth is apparent, and I literally left the class in tears multiple times (in a good way, haha, hormones are crazy). Jessica is also a doula and although we couldn't have an extra person due to COVID, we wanted to be as prepared as possible for a natural birth. Jessica came to our house and did an abridged version of her birth class, including position changes and counter pressure for my husband which was our main goal to attempt birth without an epidural. Deciding to work with Jess for the birth of our first baby was one of the best decisions my husband and I have ever made. I first met her through her prenatal yoga classes and they quickly became my weekly highlight, especially as I progressed through my second and third trimester. I liked her style of teaching yoga and when I found out she was a doula, even though at that point I wasn't sure what a doula was or if we needed one since we were planning on a hospital birth, but she graciously and patiently answered all my questions. In the last few weeks of my pregnancy, knowing that Jess would be there for the entire labor and delivery process (and providing me with lots of great information beforehand) completely shifted my mindset about my upcoming birth. Instead of feeling anxious and afraid, I began to feel calm, prepared and even a little bit excited about the experience. When the big day arrived, she was enormously helpful with helping me through the contractions in the early phase. Although my son's birth went nowhere near what we had envisioned, she helped me tap into a well of strength I didn't know that I had. She also worked with my husband in a way that made the 3 of us feel like a team. Her information beforehand and support in the moment helped my husband and I partner with the doctors to make the best medical decisions for me and my baby. As a result of having Jess there, I felt empowered and informed and was able to advocate for what I wanted. What could have been a traumatic birth experience ultimately wasn't, and a big part of that was her presence. When I look back on the day, there are many aspects of the birth that I am proud of and were a beautiful experience. To become a first-time mom over the age of 40 was exciting and nerve-racking to say the least. Having previously lost a baby and having also had a miscarriage, my initial thought with my third pregnancy was .... "this might be my one and only shot of giving birth and I wanted to do everything to make it a positive experience". My due date was approaching fast and, in my mind, I wanted to keep it simple by only allowing my wife in the delivery room to welcome our son. There was no need for a fan club cheering me on. Also, my wife and I had emotionally been through a lot and I wanted to protect our space. During my pregnancy, the word "Doula" kept coming up in conversations. I didn't give it much thought until I started hearing other women talk about their experiences. I had a warped perception that every doula was a little weird and not supportive of all birth plans. After some encouragement from a friend, I took a chance and called Jessica. I prayed out loud as I paced back and forth in the living room, "God, let me know right away if she is crazy". To my surprise my perspective changed instantly within minutes of speaking with Jessica. Making that phone call that afternoon was the best decision! My delivery was definitely not a "walk in the park" but I will always remember it as the most peaceful, beautiful, frozen in time experience of my life. I felt so protected and loved during a very vulnerable time. All of these feelings I knew I would have with my wife in the delivery room, but Jessica molded right into our space and she became our gatekeeper, biggest coach, and anchor though the journey. She held my face in her hands during some of the toughest back labor and she also quietly stepped aside on her own when sensing my wife and I needed a moment. My delivery didn't go as planned, but my experience, how I was treated, and how I felt empowered the whole time, is something I will never forget. My 2nd son was in the correct position for vaginal birth. I was determined to have a VBAC but concerned that I wouldn't find support within the medical world. So I started looking for a doula.Upon starting a prenatal yoga class toward the end of my pregnancy I had all faith in the universe to provide the doula I needed. I connected with Jessica instantly and she happens to be the prenatal yoga teacher , after a few conversations I appreciated the connection and found her to be spiritual,intuitive woman driven to grow and expand in her career as a doula. We decided to work together, she made herself available. She responded immediately when I reached out to her around 2am as I was in the middle of my very first experience of contractions and she was available to meet me too.She drove to the hospital the next morning despite not being admitted and all the way there she helped me stay in control of my Labour with breathing techniques and pointing out anything that would make things easier. I just had my first baby at the end of January 2019 and was fortunate to have Jessica as my doula. Jessica is a great doula for many different reasons. Upon first meeting Jessica I noticed she had both a peaceful demeanor and an upbeat energy - I felt both energized and calm around her! She is also incredibly encouraging and after every visit with her I left feeling even more excited about meeting my baby. In one of our meetings she helped me map out a desired birth plan, providing a lot of guidance and support. As a prenatal yoga instructor, Jessica is also very aware of the body sensations of labor and has a breadth of various exercises and breath work she teaches and uses during labor and delivery. I was able to attend a number of her prenatal yoga classes and thoroughly enjoyed the practice. I especially appreciated her verbal cues while I was in labor as they helped me breathe through pushing in a way that eased my birthing process. During the prenatal phase, Jessica also sent me a lot of helpful advice in preparing for labor and delivery (exercises, good foods to eat & teas to drink, stressed the importance of rest, etc.) She was great about checking in prior to the birth and also after to see how I was doing. Who knew what having a baby during Coronavirus would mean, but working with Jess has been so easy from start to finish. When I first contacted her, I went through a selective vetting process for someone who was understanding of some underlying pain issues and how they could be managed through birth. She had some experience with others moms with these issues, but also she went out of her way to research more about how to approach a plan even before we had agreed to work together. That immediately showed me her dedication to the mamas-to-be. Each visit she came well prepared and took the time to answer zillions of questions we had as first time parents. She even fielded some other health issues that came up and used all her resources to get us answers. As birth approached and Covid19 changed hospital support person protocols, we came up with a flexible game plan to provide digital support throughout labor and delivery. All 3 of us were crushed she couldn't be with us in person, but my husband was so thankful she was there via our digital devices to provide input on changes to our birth plan. As they say, birth and labor don't always go to plan but having Jess as a sounding boarding leading up to our baby's late arrival in a Covid19 world helped make our daughter's arrival that much smoother. We knew Jessica was the perfect doula for us the second we chatted on the phone. She was so open-minded to the type of birth we wanted, giving no judgements at all. It was clear she simply wanted to help us have the birth we wanted. At every home visit (which was a trek for her since we live about an hour away from her), she was more than happy to answer questions from my husband and myself and always provided useful information and materials for us to use and practice with. Her private yoga sessions were invaluable. She taught me how to modify poses in classes I took regularly as well as poses and breathing techniques specific to my stage of pregnancy and preparing for birth. When labor came and I advanced to active labor more quickly than expected, my husband and I felt incredibly confident being on our own laboring st home until she was able to meet us. That was all because of her preparations ahead of time. Once in the hospital delivery room, Jessica brought me everything I wanted for a "spa-like delivery" - candles, essential oils and foot massages. She made sure I was comfortable and confident the entire delivery and helped my husband feel at ease and taken care of as well. My husband and I both agree that Jessica's services were an integral part of us looking back on our pregnancy and birth journey with fondness and considered it fun! I highly recommend her and will absolutely be seeking her out for any future babies we have. read more
