I was always interested in having a homebirth since having my own bad experiences in hospitals. After seeing my mom friends have bad birth experiences in hospitals that interest quickly formed determination, I just didn't know how to go about it. Thankfully after posting on a local facebook group I was recommended Karen by name not just by one person but several people. I Always pictured myself finding someone Who was holistically minded whom I could learn from and very quickly when first speaking with her I realized Karen was exactly that. I'm so thankful we picked Karen for our home birth because my labor was not easy it was 30 hours long and I was not exactly the zen primal birther I had hoped to be I was throwing up crying and down right exhausted for the latter half of my birth and thinking omg how am I going to get this baby out who do I think I am?? But Karen was on top of it she coached me through the hardest parts and gave me and my perineum the support we desperately needed! I first met her through her prenatal yoga classes and they quickly became my weekly highlight, especially as I progressed through my second and third trimester. I liked her style of teaching yoga and when I found out she was a doula, even though at that point I wasn't sure what a doula was or if we needed one since we were planning on a hospital birth, but she graciously and patiently answered all my questions. In the last few weeks of my pregnancy, knowing that Jess would be there for the entire labor and delivery process (and providing me with lots of great information beforehand) completely shifted my mindset about my upcoming birth. Instead of feeling anxious and afraid, I began to feel calm, prepared and even a little bit excited about the experience. When the big day arrived, she was enormously helpful with helping me through the contractions in the early phase. Although my son's birth went nowhere near what we had envisioned, she helped me tap into a well of strength I didn't know that I had. She also worked with my husband in a way that made the 3 of us feel like a team. Her information beforehand and support in the moment helped my husband and I partner with the doctors to make the best medical decisions for me and my baby. As a result of having Jess there, I felt empowered and informed and was able to advocate for what I wanted. What could have been a traumatic birth experience ultimately wasn't, and a big part of that was her presence. She was very accommodating to what I requested even though it wasn't part of her typical doula package. She met with myself, my spouse, and my 2 year old on multiple occasions prior to my labor to ensure my son would be comfortable with her and her children. When I went into labor around midnight she was quick to respond and was over to my house within 15 minutes so we could head to the hospital. She kept me updated with pictures and schedules while my son was in her care. She kept great track of what he did while in her care so I was able to see what happened while I was away. She even had an extra toothbrush for him to use while staying with her! She sent me photos of my son on various adventures having a blast with her children. I would highly recommend Michelle as a doula and as a childcare provider or sibling doula. She offered me pregnancy advice even though my focus for her services was on having a safe and friendly environment for my son to be in while my spouse and I were away at the hospital.
