WOW WOW WOW! What is this place???? In San Jose, we had Cosentinos. In Hawaii, we have Whole Foods and Down to Earth, but this place knocks it out of the park. I was so overwhelmed with what I saw in there that I forgot to take pictures. Harmons as a whole gets a lot of love, but this location in particular seems to strike a chord with many. Previously, I had heard the history of how it was originally this sweet local market, then Harmons bought it, but they stayed true to the original store, so it was a special spot, blah blah blah. Honestly, this is exactly like every other Harmons I have been to, except it is very, very small. I will admit I was impressed by their plant and fresh flower department as it was large, considering the space available, and this is also one of the locations that sells gelato, so that's something (there are just a few tables available for enjoying your treat in the store). Otherwise, there is nothing to make it a destination, though it IS a nice neighborhood grocery, and no doubt convenient for those who live nearby. read more

Haven't been here in a very long time, even when it was Emigration market. My buddy mentioned they had pretty good sandwiches and was in the area and thought "what the heck" and grabbed a club with some potato chips. Pros- Small and easy to navigate; perfect for when you forget a staple item from your larger shopping trip. Its small size makes it ideal for picking up a "grab and go" lunch or dinner. They have a formidable selection of prepackaged food, as well as a small, but stacked, salad bar. Pretty impressive selection of products, considering the space. They've managed to tuck a deli and butcher in the mix. Need to apologize to someone? Flowers and a variety of bomb baked goods are right at the front for your convenience ;) I think people expect too much of this place, despite its limitations size wise. I actually think they've done a fantastic job curating the selection, all things considered. Cons- I preferred it before the Harmons buyout. Harmons is lovely, but it often feels a bit sterile, almost too perfect. Pricing is a bit restrictive for a neighborhood market, but that's why there's a Dans right up the road. For about 2 hours from 3-5 p.m., the place is overrun with middle schoolers. Probably the worst age group in existence, but we were all once that annoying, so just do your due diligence and move on. At its peak hours, parking lot can be Chernobly levels of bad. read more

I'm amazed and in full-appreciation of the fact that this quaint, highly-walkable little neighborhood between 1300 South and 1700 South in Sugarhouse is the closest thing I've seen to Mister Roger's Neighborhood since the show itself. And I'm happy to call it my hood. The epicenter of this is Emigration Market, aka Harmon's Grocery. As I walk from my house, along tree-lined streets, the neighborhood mailman waves and greets me by name. Wait, he even has a treat in his pocket for my puppy? Bonus points. Fellow dog-parents tie their pooches up at Harmon's special "pet parking" - fully equipped with fresh green AstroTurf and complimentary doggie waste bags. A nice touch! Offering are simple, yet of high-quality and anything but basic. Have you seen their cheese selection? Everything from local Seahive Cheddar to Brie imported from the small village in France where my Grandfather lives (that's Nangis, for all y'all in the know). They'll have everything you're looking for as long as it's not: a) hot breakfast items (no breakfast burrito, nor toasted bagel). We were disappointed by this last Sunday, but hey, Eggs in the City is just across the street. b) a super specific brand or type of -insert name here-. I made this mistake shopping for ingredients to make a berry pie last night. Yeah, I was a little bit sore that they didn't stock all the brands I favored... But I found some great stuff and made delicious almond/cranberry/white chocolate cookies instead. Last note, the butcher is probably the friendliest guy wielding a cleaver that I've ever encountered. Super attentive to his customers, full of knowledge of what's fresh, and witty-to-boot. This is exactly what a neighborhood grocery store should be - small for a grocery store (around the size of a typical Trader Joe's), but with a good variety of products, decent prices, lots of friendly staff. Small parking lot, but we easily found parking both times we went over the weekend. I love that they have a shaded "pet parking" area under the trees and away from the busy entrance, as well as a dog water fountain. I just browsed as my friend's uncle shopped and the bakery items looked fresh, pricing wasn't bad in the meat case, and they had a lot of random free samples being passed out around the store. They had a a demo with poached shrimp marinated in pok pok thai drinking vinegar - sooo good! The "samples" were 4 big shrimps (1 for each vinegar flavor) and they were delish. I ended up buying 4 bottles since you can also mix cocktails with it. Pricing was only slightly more than what pok pok sells it on their website for, and you don't have to pay shipping. I was most impressed that they had a case of dry aged beef that's cut to order. I didn't see pricing, but I guarantee it's much cheaper than getting it at a restaurant. If I had a cooler I would've brought some steaks back to Vegas with me. Hopefully the butchers received decent training though - I've read that the dry aging process needs to be constantly monitored since there's a fine line between "aged" and spoiled. read more

I was sad to see the Emigration Market go but Harmons has done a fantastic job with the new store! It still has it's neighborhood market look and feel but it stocked full of everything that you could possibly ask for. There is a fresh bakery that looks and smells delicious. The cheese selection rivals larger competitors but outshines because of the helpful employees who are right there to help you navigate through all the cheeses. They also have a nice meat section and a beautiful selection if fresh florals. I also appreciate the large selection of organic products. Kudos to Harmons for a job well done! read more

Appalling. I've lived down the street for a year now and this was my first and last visit. All the organic produce (that was left) was droopy and lifeless, some on the verge of rotten. The meat case was embarrassing. Some lonely dry aged steaks, yellowing "marinated" chicken breasts floating it what looked like snot water. The seafood case was even worse: all the filets looked dry and old. The huge, whole red snapper centerpiece was scaly and dry with all the telltale signs of "bad". There's a good selection of product here and it's all been carefully curated to make you feel like you're a more interesting eater than you actually are. The store location is in a nice neighborhood for walking and it had a pleasant feel inside and out. They've kept the Immigration Market sign which is cool. Service here is generally over the top but executed not as authentically friendly as a Smiths in my experience. It's all sir this and mam that, 17 year olds just barely able to disguise their contempt for you long enough to bag your groceries. I got a loaf of bread and the young man behind the counter holds up one that's plainly burnt and says "is this one good?" Um. "Maybe one a little less dark?" That's a good metaphor for the service, oblidged to go through polite motions without really caring. In any case, service is good, even with a little attitude here and there. Grocery selection tends toward expensive gourmet-seeming items and politically correct vegetables and fruit. Not a great place to do your regular grocery shopping, but a pretty good supplement for special occasions or when you're craving something unique. read more

Service at this store has definitely gone south over the course of and coming out of the pandemic. They do a good business and employ quite a few people, but only a few of them seem to know what they are doing. Employees often get in the way of shoppers and can be rude. The manager might want to encourage them to man a checkout counter when lots of people are waiting and only one employee is checking. You know? Get involved! Or maybe mark some prices on an item or two. The guy who checked me out today was nice, but he didn't seem to know the basics of counting change. I was also sad when Emigration Market announced they would close and unhappy that a large chain would be reopening the location. Part of my neighborhood's charm are the small local businesses that are in walking distance and make me feel like I don't live in the vast suburbias that Utah has. I was given some chocolate chip cookies just before having my son - and they came from this Harmons. They were addictive. Which meant, when they were gone, I had to check out the new store to buy my own. Harmons has done a fantastic job. They preserved the feel of my quaint little market and put the very best of Harmons here. The employees are friendly, the location clean. The aisles are tiny, as Paula said, so unless you have a stroller that turns on a dime (our Phil and Teds works) don't attempt it. It does feel a little claustrophobic if you've only shopped in vast supermarkets but I like it because it feels like my east coast stores. They have a gelato and dessert counter, delicious fresh baked breads, fantastic artisan cheeses, high quality meats and more. I'm so happy they came here and appreciative of the job they've done. There is also a lovely bright eat-in area if you choose to do so. read more

Harmon's took a defunct grocery store and revamped it with the typical Harmon's charm and attention to detail. I shop at the Bangerter Harmon's which is roughly the size of Cowboy Stadium, but it seems like they've been able to cram just about every product I find at "my" store into this small store. As numerous people have said, things are a bit cramped in this store. Skinny aisles and lots of people during the busy hours can make things interesting. They managed to keep a lot of the original character of the old Emigration Market, while modernizing just about everything else. read more

I have been going to lunch here for many years (city worker) and never had a bad experience. The deli chicken curry salad is amazing, even though it's not made every day. The bakery is so much better now that Harmon's has taken over. Best bakery for a chain grocery store in Utah, for all locations really....what prompted me to write this review was the egg salad croissant I bought today. Simply the finest grab and go sandwich I have ever had...period. I'm really still trying to process the aftermath of what just happened to my palate. Delicious. This is the first harmons I've ever been on and it looks different than a lot of other ones particularly in size. It says emigration market on the side of it and was bought by harmons but this location has been around a very long time as far as what other reviewers have said. It's not open as late as a lot of the other harmons but it's in a quieter area and when I go late it's not crowded at all. It gets really crowded around 3-4 when school gets out. Other locations seem to be open til midnight but the hours posted are correct. It's only until ten but they do open as early as others. read more

Donuts taste like they are two days old. Stale and chewy. Went to get salad stuff tonight. The produce looks like it should've been thrown out a day ago. Last week we tried the pizza. I love this "Little Harmon's" - a true neighborhood grocery store. It's small, no doubt, and they even have mini shopping carts to fit in the narrow aisles- but don't let the small size fool you, this store has it all - mostly. Instead of 16 varieties of enchilada sauce you'll only get 2-3, and you won't find 100 different cake mixes like other larger Harmon's has, but you can find what you're looking for almost every time. The thing that makes this Harmon's special is the people who work there. They know their customers and what they love, especially Aaron in produce. He's not only a really nice guy, he knows his produce, and the farmers who grow it and will point out the "must try" items in his dept. This is not a mega store that sells groceries, electronics and clothing, but it is a very special place where you can find the highest quality ingredients with amazing personal service. read more

Over the last year I've had over 100 sushi rolls for lunch. What's most impressive is the consistency of the rolls. So much so that one day I new immediately from the presentation that another sushi chef was helping out for the day. It's not just good sushi for the price, it's just generally good sushi. The butcher has fresh high quality cuts of meat and fish. It's more expensive than your usual grocery store, but the difference is in the taste. Try out a fresh salmon topped with their pineapple salsa. Won't regret it. I've had almost as many bakery items, and it leaves me torn. It's always delicious, but also inconsistent. My favorite is the eclair. Though the size of these vary measurably in the same daily batch. Unfortunately the small ones make it to the back. So the one your handed is sometimes a disappointment to what is immediately viewable. The filling always tastes the same, but the texture varies from light whipped to thick whipped to creamy. If I could get the same eclair every day then I probably would. On my birthday I grabbed a black and white cake while on the run. It was a delicious cake. Probably the best ready-made cake I've had. The chocolate peanut butter brownies are always a win for a quick treat. And a bag of cookies is great to split among the family. The store itself is well stocked. Have been able to find almost every random ingredient needed to cook dinner that same night. read more

Smaller than Whole Foods and more actual grocery items than Trader Joe's (I am a fan of both!) - but a great selection. I went on a Sunday early afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all....but I can imagine the parking lot being a little small when it gets busy there I would normally give this market "four stars"...so you may ask..."How did they earn that fifth star?" Simple. I have been looking for Angostura aromatic bitters since I arrived in this town...and they not only had it... it doesn't look like they will run out any time soon. I'm usually not inclined to rate most of the Harmon's - most of the grocery stores, in fact, though I've tried to pick some up here and there - as I don't go to them often enough to justify what I think is a "fair" rating, but having been a few times when this was Emigration and taking enough time to scout this as perhaps a viable spot when I'm in the area, more frequently these days with a park somewhat nearby that my kid likes a lot, this will be more the exception. I really like the layout and stylings of the shelves, especially the sort of "old world" feel to the wood. I also liked how attentive the staff were to keeping this place clean and the butcher guy is like someone distilled the rays of the sun and used it to fuel the man. I was also very impressed by the steaks and some of the other selections at the meat counter. Fruit looked good and there was a somewhat impressive selection of variety. I also liked that, like some of the Harmon's, there is a seating area, if you want to order some food there and then sit down and eat it in-store. Where this place sort of fell down for me was in the lack of overall variety. The beer selection, by way of example, is pathetic. I'm trying to think of a convenience mart or gas station or anywhere else that somehow has a worse selection and am coming up empty. I realize with a store this small, sacrifices have to be made somewhere, but this place would be approaching impossible to do the normal heavy weekend shopping. I liked the feel of it a great deal and in many ways, it sort of reminds me of a much larger-scale Liberty Heights (though not quite in that class), but while it was a pleasant stroll, I would find great difficulty in it being much more than that, even if I lived in much closer proximity. I do believe that I will definitely be returning on that odd occasion when I find myself needing a fantastic steak, but those times are pretty rare these days. read more
