I was first introduced to Harper's Roofing by my realtor seven years ago. I was selling my home and needed a roof repair as a result of the buyer's inspection. Chris quoted a fair price and fixed the roof without ever having to meet with me. Tracye emailed the invoice and the process was seamless. Fast forward to this year. We have a flat roof and were noticing some stains on our ceiling. I thought my roof may have been warrantied for the work that was done prior to when I first bought the home, so I called the very well-known company that did the work to come out and give me a quote. They essentially recommended a full roof replacement exceeding $20k. I decided to call Harper's for a second opinion. I made a appointment with Chris. He was on time, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He went up on the roof, performed his inspection, and came back down. He marveled at how well the roof had been constructed and said it was built as if the actual builder would be living there. He said there were some repairs that were needed, but the quote came in at a little more than $2k! Quite a difference from $20k. Having grown up in a family owned business, I appreciate their approach to details and customer service. They are great at communicating and answering questions. I have had some other minor maintenance on the roof performed by Harper's and there have even been times when Tracye was able to get the team over sooner than was planned when there has been an unexpected opening in the schedule. I have known Chris Harper for a few years on a personal level and recently procured services from his company to repair and replace some damaged concrete roof tiles. I scheduled with the office and Chris stopped by my house and provided a free estimate. He walked around the roof for a while and made note of all the deficiencies and quoted me a price. I received an emailed quote from Tracye at the office the following day and then scheduled a time for the repairs. Steven, the tech that visited was on time and completed the work within an hour and a half. He repaired the tiles in question, blew all the debris off the roof, then cleaned the sidewalk and driveway of the debris from the roof. I kept getting "storm chasing" companies who wanted to do my roof through my insurance based on a couple of shingles missing. So I thought I should get a couple PROFESSIONAL opinions and make sure I was ok. Chris came by and took a look. He told me I am good for now and when I should be looking to redo the roof. To have the owner of a company come by himself and leave without trying to sell you anything is pretty impressive. He knows if you treat people right they remember it. I would not recommend them for a tile roof at all. Came out and did a small tile roof repair for me. They told told me what a great job they did, and I paid them. The price was TRIPLE any other reputable company, by the way. The bids I have for repair of a 70 square area are in the $500 range. This company was triple that. I wanted to believe they would do a really great job on my roof and would have no further issues for many years from the roof. I just wanted it done right. Unfortunately, what I got from this company was completely the opposite. I foolishly did not personally inspect the roof before they left. I took their word for it that the job was done correctly, and completely as specified. The only criteria I specified was NO roofing felt or tar paper under the area of this small 18 tile area of repair. I specified metal, or a membrane like "Peel and Stick'. I should have asked for SBS or one of the newer, far more durable membranes, but I did not know any better and it was certainly not suggested. A later roof inspection revealed many issues. 14 roof tiles were "floating" on my roof, neither nailed or adhered in any way. The roof was missing 4 tiles altogether, many tiles were cut incorrectly, far too short. There were large gaps, (2-4 inches) between the hip ridge and the next tile down. In other words, tiles were were not placed to catch water coming off the hip ridge, at all. The missing tiles and the tiles that were cut off too short clearly showed the old damaged roofing felt, (tar paper). This made me very angry. I had CLEARLY specified the whole area was to either have peel and stick or metal protecting the roof decking, and I had been told the roof was done to my specifications, clearly a lie. They basically left the old, crappy and damaged tar paper up there and hoped I would never notice. Update: They have since come out and corrected their work. But they argued with me every step of the way. They said that the 18 roof tiles were just fine sitting on the roof with out nails or adhesive. They argued and insisted the 4 missing tiles were never on my roof to begin with, but this is a lie. My roof was never missing tiles. I believe they were damaged by cutting, and they thought no one would notice them missing. The 4 tiles they replaced are a completely different color, and at some point I will have them changed out by a reputable roofer. They argued and said the old damaged tar paper was just fine as well, even though It had a hole in it and was starting to disintegrate. Although they did come out and correct the work, I felt like each step was a negotiation, with a lot of out right lies, mis-leading statements, and blame on other people thrown in. I would rather have a company who does it right the first time. I also prefer companies who do not argue or lie, ("Roofing felt for tile roofs is special roofing paper" (No, it's not, it just 30lb run-of-the-mill roofing paper) and my favorite was, "Tiles do not have to be nailed or glued on a roof, they are fine being held by their back lip" WTF? Umm, OK, call me crazy, but do you think you could just nail or glue mine PLEASE? My favorite quote was from the owner, Chris. He literally told me to get up on the roof myself and check that the redone job was to my satisfaction. Again, wtf ??? Because, as he put it, he had "no intention to drive out and look at my job again because it take too much time." No, I would not recommend them. My Story: I was researching house painters and had my 3 top choices come out for quotes when it became apparent that we would need some roof repairs before hand. So, I picked my top 4 roofing companies to come out and give me quotes. The range went from $3000 for the "get by" repairs all the way up to $17,000 for nearly a brand new roof! My head was spinning because they all seemed so knowledgeable and trustworthy. How was I going to pick? Then, I harkened back to the conversation that Chris from Harper's and I had. I never felt pressured, he gave free advise no matter what company we chose, AND he understood the realty of personal budgets and good working relationships! It was this professionalism and approach that rose to the top of my mental roof-chatter, and what landed them the job! Day Of Work: WOW! Having lived in the same home in Arizona for 13 years now, we have hired our share of repair crews/people and let me tell you, I have NEVER seen a team as organized, clean, friendly, professional, and thorough as the team from Harper's Roofing. NO JOKE! A swirl of sounds and efficiency like a swarm of buzzing bees that never became annoying but remained impressive well after the last nail had been driven. On The Phone: Tracye could not have been nicer or more professional. We had some issues with our budget that rose up shortly before work began. Stuff happens, right? But Tracye was always patient and reachable, and after some minor adjustments on our end things were right back on track and everything went smoothly. THANKS TRACYE! :) Now, the "Research for Dummies" portion: Budgets are real. And so is wear and tear on our houses here in the Valley of the Sun. But that doesn't mean that things have to be done all at once. We tend to forget the importance of good working relationships. But they are critical when talking about homeownership and protecting your investment. Harper's produced 3 quotes for us, which was exactly what we needed! We chose two of the three and will continue with the third once our budget has rebounded a bit. They will be there for us when that time comes, and that lends valuable piece of mind! Yelp: Yelp ratings are tricky things. My tip is to read other ratings from people who have complaints. I have found that most of the time they are made by people who just like to complain in general. My husband called last week to schedule an appointment and was told that it would be a week before someone could get out due to the rain. He understood due to the weather and scheduled the appointment for today between 9-12. At 11 am today he receives a call that they won't be out due to the rain until next week. I then called and spoke to Tracey, all she said was "I'm sorry I can't control the rain". I explained the rain was the reason we were given last week and that we were understanding. I then explained that I had rearranged my schedule to be home for them today and they call 2 hours into the window when they are supposed to be here. I advised her that I was extremely disappointed and that I thought it was very poor customer service and that I would be writing a review to reflect. Horrible customer service. Scheduled an appointment 2 weeks ago to have work quoted. Took time off work today and waited for entire day for them to show, but they never did. Called 3 times to find out when they would be out (including leaving 2 messages), but only received a call back 15 minutes before they closed. Then I was told "we're really busy around here" and "a lot of people schedule appointments but find another roofer". I moved into a 26 year old home and there were some issues with the roof from my home inspection report. I had Harper's come out and inspect the roof. Chris found 3 different potential issues and divided up the estimate into those 3 problem areas. He also gave me advice on which areas need to be fixed soon and which ones we could wait on (or watch). The estimate arrived via e-mail the next day. I had called out to another roofing company, too, but I couldn't get them to return my calls. So, without another price comparison, I went ahead with the repairs. The worker's arrived on time, were courteous and left nothing for me to clean up after the job was complete. Now jump to 1 year later. I had some minor roof damage due to a recent storm. I called Harper's again to supply an estimate. Since I never did a price comparison on their first job, I called a second company to also provide an estimate. My thinking was if Harper's estimate is "in the ball park", I'd go with them again based on the last experience. To make a long, long, frustrating story (regarding all of the interactions with another roofing company) short - Harper's estimate beat the competition by over 20%. This is a family-owned business with top-notch customer service. They had no BBB complaints when I checked them out, and actually had 2 POSITIVE customer responses. I used them several years ago for some minor repairs to satisfy a home inspection for a home buyer. When I needed repairs to my current roof, I thought I would try them again. Let me just say that their customer service blows away other companies I called. I called some "highly reputable" companies, one bragging they are the only recipient of the BBB ethics award (which Im sure they paid mightily for). Harpers called me the morning after I submitted the online request. Tracye Harper set up an appointment for an estimate (she said it would be first thing in the morning, but I couldnt meet till later that week). Chris Harper showed up at my house as scheduled. Speaking with him, it was immediately apparent I was dealing with a roofer and not a salesman (I mean that in a completely positive way). He knew what the issues were and told me he would break down the estimate in the three areas of my roof that had issues. He told me which repairs should take priority and which were more cosmetic. Chris said I would receive an estimate that afternoon via email. I received the estimate just as promised. When I sent some follow-up questions via email, I received responses within minutes. When I called, I got Tracye on the line or had somebody call me back within a couple minutes. Excellent response time, compared to some of the bigger roofing companies I dealt with. One in particular never gave me my estimate more than a week after I was supposed to get it. You can see my review on that company if you want more details, but I wouldn't even bother wasting my time with them. Harpers got out to my house within a week of accepting their estimate. The workers showed up on time and completed the work on time. They did a great job cleaning up as well. We had a roof leak after a remodel. What a bummer. They did a localized tear down of the area near the interior water damage and couldn't see a cause. They improved on some areas that were iffy. We had to wait for a rain to see if that fixed the leak. It didn't. They came out again, without charge. They unbolted the rooftop a/c unit, siliconed the hole and the bolts. The unit is 25 feet from where the leak was. I surely didn't think that was the cause, but it sure was. Turns out, experience counts. read more

I called and spoke with Tracye and the very next day Chris Harper came out to give us an estimate. He clearly explained the repair process and the possibility of it leading to a further roof repair depending on what they find when they get into it. The estimate he sent us had a low to high range depending on how extensive the job ended up being. When they did the job, the total price came in at the low end of the estimate and there were no surprises.
