I am writing to express my disappointment with my care at UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery in Porter Ranch under Dr. Harpreet Bawa. In July, I scheduled with Dr. Bawa but was seen by a nurse practitioner without notice. Only when I asked did they say he had gone home sick. The staff first claimed they had contacted me, but after I showed no call or message, they admitted the mistake. I gave the office another chance. The nurse practitioner gave me a cortisone injection and recommended physical therapy,. The injection didn't help, and my pain persisted. When I finally saw Dr. Bawa, he spent about two minutes with me. He did not examine my knee, didn't even touch it, and just ordered an MRI. Frankly, what was the point of me coming in if an MRI could be ordered without any physical evaluation? It makes me wonder if that visit was just for billing--especially since I'm sure I was billed for the first time as if he had seen me. That visit was not inexpensive. I completed the MRI on August 20. I've reviewed the findings myself--yes, I researched them--and it seems there's a significant concern. I'm not assuming, but it's clearly not "nothing." Yet, after a week, I've had no follow-up or explanation from the office. This ongoing lack of communication and follow-up has left me with little confidence. I remain in pain and should not have to chase my physician for care. read more

Dr. Bawa is a specialist for the knees. He is very matter of fact because he is very skilled at what he does. His credential's are impeccable and his knowledge is amazing. He is everything you want in a Doctor. I trust him with my life. I messed my knees up so I went to him and my knees hurt bad and when he injected gel in them it barely hurt. He got me into physical therapy and a miracle began to take place. He is a big believer in physical therapy and so am I. Dr. Bawa listens to you and has a great bedside manner. His staff are all very wonderful as well. They are very efficient and warm. Dr. Bawa is not only a physician of Sports Medicine but also works with the well known Southern California Orthopedic Institute for Sports Medicine. People he really knows his stuff and you can trust his decisions on what to do. Oh and since I'm such a baby on pain he has the patience of a Saint. I have had two knee replacements with Dr Bawa and his wonderful team and it changed my life. I have a fear of surgery and put it off way too long, the first knee surgery went so well, and his team was so fantastic, I actually looked forward to my second knee surgery, which went just as well. I cannot say enough about Dr. Bawa, I have family members who have had knee replacements, with different doctors and they did not go as well. Dr. Bawa's PAs, Hannah and Lauren are just as important, and they are exceptional, and their after care was superb. I did a lot of research before I went into the surgery, and the biggest complaint I heard about Dr. Bawa, is he is not as involved once the surgery is finished. I had no issues with that, I was looking for an exceptional surgeon, and found one in Dr. Bawa. I was already familiar with Hannah and Lauren when I would come in for shots before my surgery, and they were always available to answer questions, so knowledgeable, and always got back to me immediately. Love story short(er): At 60, both of my hips went bad in a six month period. Runs in the family. I belong to UCLA and found Dr. Bawa and his reviews. From beginning to where I am now: 9 days after first hip replaced, this experience has been . His PAs are terrific. His electronic communication is daily and thorough, from prepping for the surgery through recovery. It's Sunday, and he answered a question personally. SCOI has been great. TOSH was a fantastic experience. He hand picks his team, from anesthesiologists to home health and PTs. Nine days post surgery, I barely need a cane. I knew what to expect, how to prepared, had equipment delivered to my home, attended a prep session at TOSH, I just don't know what else a surgeon and system could do to improve the experience. I was very pleased with my visit with Dr. Bawa. The office is well managed and accommodating. Dr. Bawa was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He explained the findings of my X-rays. He addressed my options. I will need hip replacement in the future as I have bone on bone. However, I'm not quite ready for that. I did receive a cortisone shot which has really helped. Had hip replacement 2 years ago- still have nerve damage from the surgery. All the way down my leg. The Dr spent no time with me before and no time after the surgery . When I mentioned the nerve problems- which did not exist before the surgery- he said it was not his problem to see a different doctor. Terrible, terrible experience. Would not recommend the robot or him to anyone. Do your research and find another option. read more

I agree with everyone else who found Dr. Bawa too busy to really care for his patients post-op. "Assembly Line Doctor" is an apt description. The problem is that you won't find many orthopedist who will take over Bawa's mishaps, because there are too many of them. He has the reputation of doing too many surgeries ($$$) and no post-op care. If you heal on your own, you are lucky. If not, too bad. read more

Don't waste your time because your time is of no importance. Waited 45 minutes as supposedly first patient seen in am. No show. Told by staff he got behind. Clearly he completely overbooks himself, no communication to patient. read more

Thank you Dr Bawa for giving me my life back! I had a total hip replacement about 6 months ago and I never thought how good I can actually feel again. I walk 4 miles daily with a smile on my face and squat and lift weights 5 days a week with ease. Something I could not do for many many years. I'm only 57, and it was the best decision I made. I'm so happy that I decided on Dr Bawa as my doctor. The staff were all amazing, Brittany and Lauren were so kind and helpful after the surgery always answering all my questions. I have gone to see other orthopedic surgeons for their opinions prior to seeing Dr.Bawa but I felt the most comfortable and confident with Dr. Bawa. I'm not sure why anyone would give this man a bad review.. he was kind and very patient with me and reassured me that after a year of fully healing I would be good as new. I had an accident that injured both my knees. Thanks to dr bawa and his team I'm independent walking with minimal pain. Dr Bawa is a highly skilled surgeon, my scars are beautiful but first he has a relationship with me I ask questions he has solutions. I had a total hip replacement at the end of December. I just returned from my annual early Mother's Day trip to Disney's Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. I was completely recovered, absolutely no paid in my hip. Last year's annual trip was so very painful and so I was extremely happy that I had no pain. I am officially a new bionic woman. Now if I could just get super hearing. Dr. Bawa is great. He answered my questions. He explained everything to me. The paperwork sent home after the procedure was very helpful. I healed faster than I thought possible. Best decision I could have made. Dr. Bawa is a very talented surgeon and I would trust him with other hip if ever needed. I do not work for Dr. Bawa. Dr Bawa seems to be running an assembly line when it comes to his patients visits. He's in and out! He told me I had a tear on my knee. Showed me real quick on the screen and left. Later as I started PT I come to find out I have not one but two tears. And in two different sides. He only pointed out the one. He was in such a hurry to get out of there that he didn't give me the entire diagnosis. As I read the other comments I can see he's definitely an Assembly Line Doctor!! read more

Dr. Bawa is a great hip and knee doctor. He does his surgeries with the assistance of the Stryker Mako robotic arm. He has replaced both of my hips and I am now out of pain and returning to my golfing and football coaching. Dr. Bawa also uses Health Loop to check on you almost daily for the first few weeks after surgery. If you have a question, you just leave a comment , add a photo if you want, and he or his staff will answer your questions. If you are in pain, need a hip or knee replacement, I would highly recommend you call Dr. Bawa!!!! read more

I agree with the -100 review. Where do I start? Bawa was very negative and unprofessional. he told me my leg would never be the same and I would never walk right again. A surefire reason why he's not operating on me if he has such a negative outlook on my outcome. I'm sorry but what doctor would say that to a patient who is already frightened? An arrogant jerk that's who. Like every doctor, he was smart enough to get into med school, but he never learned emotional intelligence and how to treat a patient. I waited 45 minutes and he didn't want to hear my questions, just wanted to boast about how many joint replacements he's done and to tell me all about his 5 robots (he said hes the only surgeon operating this way, another cautionary tale) and his superior anterior approach which is hogwash. I've been told by 4 leading specialists that this is a marketing gimmick. I had a friend with me and bawa talked to him instead of me the patient, really wacky. and he badmouthed a colleague, putting down his skill which is completely inappropriate. he maybe spent all of 10 minutes with me, good riddance to an awful person. read more

I read the above review and was very surprised that it was so negative. I had hip replacement on August 11, 2021 and went home the same day. I had already scheduled my follow up appointment. They did an X-ray everything looked text book perfect and started PT at Bartley Physical Therapy, I had been going there prior to surgery. I was walking without a walker on week one, week two cane. It is the patients responsibility not the surgeons for you to get better. Do your homework folks, surgery is never easy and is gonna be painful the first few weeks. If i could give -100 stars i would. Where do i begin? He spent 10 minutes talking to my husband at his appointment and charged us $1,030. Then he told him he had to get a contrast MRI which is a dye injection. We had questions, but It took 26 hours to hear back from his office & she had NO answers. Dr. Bawaa Did not explain the injection would be directly into his joint and he most likely would NOT BE ABLE TO WALK AFTER. The woman at the front desk of the MRI office was very kind and listened to us & told us that it has been an ongoing issue the doctor does not tell people what to expect so she would be reporting it to management AGAIN. I would never ever trust him because if they are this neglectful ordering an MRI i can not even begin to imagine the type of care you would receive after a procedure. After 6 phone calls we got 1 call back from his office & the front desk said "sorry, everyone's super busy Friday's. We called in a script for you" They ordered a ridiculous amount of pain killers & that IS NOT why we called!! Prime example of a doctor who does not care and throws addictive pills at patients. RUN! I'm beyond disappointed & feel awful about what my husband has had to experience. I cancelled my workday because he needs my help just getting from the couch to the bathroom. You have many choices when it comes to orthopedic surgeons, but your search should end with Dr. Bawa. He is a skilled surgeon who has great bed side manners. He cares for all his patients and follows up with them personally. He is one of the few robotic surgeons and is worth driving in for from any location. My wife had a total knee joint replacement by Dr. Bawa and his team at Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital. There were some issues post-discharge which weren't his fault but overall it was all well done. I visited Dr. Bawa today for a knee pain I've been experiencing for two months. Overall I am very dissatisfied with my visit. He was the type of doctor that the minute steps into the room he is ready to leave. He does not like to spend any time explaining the condition, taking the proper time to look at the X-rays, and MRIs, ready to offer a treatment, again, without any explanation. He did not even discuss the other treatment options, I had to bring up one based on my research, which then he offered two sentences for it and immediately left the room. Hip replacement surgery and recovery is not an easy thing to go through. Still, the most important thing for me was the post-Op results, not the discomfort in the middle. After 6 weeks, I can finally say that my hip is better than when I went in for surgery, and getting better still. A big part of that recovery is the robotic assisted anterior surgery that Bawa performs. I had heard some horror stories about the computer assisted surgeries, and I believe these may have been due to a learning curve some surgeons had using these new devices. Bawa has been doing these surgery for years, and for me the experience and easier recovery from surgery over posterior entry(more muscles are cut and forget about sitting for a while), made this an easy choice for me. I'm so happy that I finally had this done, and can get back to doing the things I used to enjoy doing. I went on a 10 mile bike ride today! read more
