Gah! What's everyone's beef with the toll authority? When I went, things were smooth sailing. I do resent having to pay tolls in general, but these guys made it easy. Their cameras and toll tags seem to do all the work. As long as things go well, they seem to go very well, but when they go bad, they go horrid. I was driving at the speed limit, and getting passed like I was standing still. Speed limits seem to be a mere suggestion along most of the toll road. Houston drivers know better than that. If you're paying to use the roads, I guess you can drive it like you stole it. Some of them probably did. My favorite thing about the Harris County Toll Roads is the cars - when you see the dropped lowrider with the spoke rims that stick way out and the fur on the inside of the car jammin' some DJ Screw while sippin' on some syzzurp, you know you rollin' Clutch City. read more

Has always been a hassle with payments, and deleting and locking saved payment methods. While it may be smooth to sign up everything else is not. I hate that they did away with texas tag. They were so, so much better. read more

Scum my bank account out information was charged but I didn't get around to changing it on my account. Was charged the bank returned the payment was charged a fee and before I could fix the issue was automatically charged again meaning another fee all total 70$ for going through wiry ez tag one time. Absolutely ridiculous I'm closing my account and never going through that shithole county. read more

I recently received an unexpected invoice from the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) for nearly $500. When I contacted their team, I was told that invoices are not sent until a "significant" amount has accrued, and that there is no guaranteed notification cadence-- by email or by mail--on a regular basis. They verified over the phone that they had not sent me a single notice since 2022. This means that drivers can unknowingly rack up toll charges for months or even years without receiving any notice until a large balance suddenly appears. In my case, I had not received a single invoice or late notice since 2022. Then, out of nowhere, I was sent a $500 bill with less than 30 days to pay it. Every other Texas toll authority and basic service provider that I pay on a regular basis--utilities, rent, even smaller toll systems--has a simple notification system. HCTRA's lack of one makes it extremely difficult for people to pay their bills on time and puts customers at risk without fair warning. This practice feels outdated, poorly managed, and unfair to the public. HCTRA should be required to send toll notifications regularly--monthly, quarterly, or at the very least, when a balance first appears. They told me I could have "checked their website at any time" but they just officially took over as the operators of TXTag this year. How was I supposed to guess where to go and when to pay my bill? Assholes. This company is just crappy. The bill they send (the first bill) is so aggressive looking, and it comes from an address named "HCTRA-Violations". I do not even care about the tolls or the fees but no need to be a dick with your billing practices. I have never paid a bill late, but even if someone was late with their bill, the aggressive language on the bill would STILL be over the top. SCAM ALERT!! They could stop scamming people with bogus claims! I drive a 2012 Ford camper van and they classified it as a class C in order to milk $60 from me. I called and complained 4 times and they didn't fix it. I gave up and payed it, not wanting to waste any more time with it. I'm ok that HCTRA took over the account of TXtag, this is business only but, if they got all our accounts, why they didn't transfer the founds over to them? my TX Tag account was closed and to be able to get my funds, I do have to create a NEW account again in order to cnacel my account and get my funds back, but the custormer agent asked me for my address were I did enter at the time of registered, I didn't remember, she asked me for the CC onfiles, I don't remember since I do have multiple accounts, I did ask for the either first number or first letter of the address, she said for security reason, she could not do it, I gave the account number, the tags numbers of my vehicles and nothing, she was square, not cooperative at all. increidable matter of handleing our money!! how much money there is hanging there without any use? read more

Pay every statement as they arrive . The statement was for 32.02 logged in to pay and it stated I owed 140.00 and had all these other dates. In July I was billed 166.00 and paid it ,this was for August. Before that I paid 50.00 then 52.21. read more

I just received another threat of administration fees, court costs and $500.00 fine from hctra. I had a whole $6.40 negative balance for some toll somewhere. No itemization of time or date of toll road use, just the charge. I think it may have been for tolls associated with my use of the Kansas toll road on 12-7-24 but who really knows. I also had a $20.00 positive balance with txtag that was not transferred over to the new hctra account. Needless to say, I have ordered a KTag. I have heard from another Winter Texan they have better administration. read more

I figure that there are really three types of people who come in here. People who are trying to sign up for a toll tag, people who are trying to pay an unpaid toll, and people who are trying to resolve an issue with their account. Depending on who it is, they're going to have very different experiences. The consistent truth of this place is that there is always a substantial line to get help. If they have more than three people working at the windows, it makes the line move, but as soon as someone steps out of line, a new person replaces them, keeping it at least a dozen people deep. I had actually swung by to get a replacement tag because I'd gotten a new car. They told me that I had an unpaid toll from years ago. I demanded the date and suggested a specific one-- Memorial Day 2015, when a particular flood hit Houston and knocked out a lot of the electricity in various areas. Sure enough, they confirmed the window I suggested, and could pull a photo of me going through the EZ Tag lane but not the video showing that I attempted to use the other lane, threw enough quarters to raise the bar, noticed that the machine was not working since the power was out, pulled back, and drove through the EZ tag lane since I'd already paid the toll. Weeks later, they follow up to tell me the exact same thing-- that I allegedly owe money, but they can't pull the video. I figure sooner or later they're going to make me double pay for a toll I already paid, but in the meantime I'm going to draw it out and make it not worth their while to collect. read more

Just no!! We've had SOOOO many issues with our EZ tag...from our cc not being billed leading to toll violations, vehicles being removed from our account but still showing up in the system and having to be removed again...just so many issues and having to call in several times a year to resolve the same issues over and over. Super annoying. Makes me wonder what the point is to even having the EZ tag when I'm having bills sent in the mail anyway... Thankfully the customer service has been pretty kind for the most part but it's still super annoying to have to deal with the same issues over and over and over... read more

Its a scam to get you to buy a toll tag. You cant just pay them online ,,,Some of the tolls go strait to invoice or collections without you even knowing it. Shame on these people . I should have sued ,If it happens again I will sue you evil people. read more

I have dealt with the folks at HCTRA, at least five or six times by phone. Uniformly, I have been impressed with the people I spoke with, all of whom were knowledgeable, and all of whom spoke excellent English and were easily understood. They have always gone out of their way to help me. I would give them an A+ for customer service, no doubt about it. They don't let you pay by cash at the toll anymore. And their website is trash. If you try to do anything at all, there's always some sort of error. Oh and don't ever forget to pay your toll because god forbid that you forget and it racks up. Terrible service, terrible support system. Overall just crap. read more

I've had nothing but good luck with the toll road system. Commuting from one part of town to another everyday, my husband and I use different toll roads. I've found the toll roads that I take (Sam Houston & Westpark) to be clean, well maintained, and lacking in road work. I regularly see police, but they aren't over zealous in their ticket writing. I've also had to deal with the website and in store employees several times. I've always found them to be helpful and polite. I've had to call and put in a rental car tag when my car was being repairs, purchased new EZ tags with a friend who was new to the country, and change credit cards on the website when mine was stolen. Each time I've dealt with the employees in the store and the website, it's been an easy experience. I was surprised at how easy it was to put in a rental car plate and continue to drive through the EZ tag lanes. I don't especially like paying to drive the highways, but if I have to I want the process to be easy. I like being able to drive at full speed through the EZ tag lanes and not have to stop and throw change at a bucket (I can't tell you how bad of a shot I am!). read more

Scam of the century. We moved here from out of town. Using the scam toll road on 249 every now and then. All the sudden I get an HCTRA invoice in the mail for $5.38. I call them wondering why because I have an NTTA toll tag on the vehicle. The lady proceeds to tell me that TexasTag is the universal tag system in Texas so just go there and pay your balance. So I've been doing that FOR 7 MONTHS all the meanwhile NEVER getting any invoice from HCTRA. Then yesterday, I get an invoice in the mail from them for $467.00!!!!!! WTF!!! I call up there and they deny and negligence and that HCTRA is their own billing system and tollway and that they dont have to send out invoices they only do it as a courtesy. I went back and forth with these F'ers for an hour about the fact they need to drop the collections. They were billing me $19.00 - $21.00 EVERY 3 - 7 DAYS!!. They told me I had to pay the balance or go on a payment plan in order for the collections to stop. Rip off of the highest order and criminal business. This is why people hate Houston scumbag city. Go F your selves and rot. read more

Have just 30 minutes lunch and decided to go to Ez tag store whose business hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Got there at 12:32 to find out that they decided to have lunch hours from 12:30 to 1:00 pm. Note that if buying the EZ TAG Express for your rental car, it DOES NOT cover all toll roads in Texas despite what their advertising says. Our rental car company charged us an additional $18 in tolls and penalties because our EZ TAG did not cover portions of SH130 in the Austin area. Slick marketing but not truthful. read more

SCAM ALERT!!! I have never felt so infuriated in my life!!! I made the mistake of accidentally getting on one of their Scam Toll roads going to visit my younger sister in Houston. Two or Three months later i get a final notice letter in the mail saying i owe 149.00 dollars!!!! First of all i never received a letter stating i owed anything but they sure love to send their final notice letters to scare you!! I decided to give them a call knowing it could go either way. They did not want to help me out over the phone. After threatening the lady over the phone with a lawsuit, she said she could lower it to the reasonable cost of 2.75. Which is what should be paid. Customer service is terrible. They charged my account 2 times within the same minute and it didn't go through because I lost my debit card and had to get a new one. They charged me $30 each time within the same minute. 2 days later they did it again. Then I got 3 different amounts of what I owed. They said they don't have the technology to tell if an account is being charged back to back but you have the technology to be able to track millions of cars and charge them for tolls. Absolute crap. I have not been to Houston in years, however my NTTA account has been charged several times by this outfit. NTTA was adamant that the vehicle in question had my plate number and tolltag, which is 100% impossible. Therefore I contacted these people to ask them about the vehicle in the photo where the charge was incurred. Of course, they never reply. Apparently it takes a lawsuit and a subpoena for this, which is not worth it over $12.00. However I will certainly be letting my state rep and others know how these people do business. Wow! Finally got what I believe were double charging and payments( paid on missed toll, toll, still got the tolls invoiced and fees added, worst was when at some point, invoices were sent to my old address and fees got added). It wasn't possible to get it stopped and resolved for a long time. Luckily, after many visits to HCTRA office, I finally met MICHELLE, a very competent HCTRA staff that took time to look into it and got the site manager(HCTRA beltway feeder around Hammerly) to credit some of the charges.
