This is the birthplace of bourbon. John Pogue is a trained geologist, who turned his talents and knowledge toward the family business of distilling. The beautiful focus of the property is the 1845 home of John's ancestors, which is on the US Department of the Interior National Register of Historic Places. Old Pogue "Masters Select" has appeared on the Wine Enthusiast "Top 50 Spirits" list. One of the "secrets" of Kentucky Bourbon, John explained, is the unique limestone aquifer of the region. It contains no iron, through which the water filters. Be sure to book your tour in advance online. The product of this small batch craft distillery is to my understanding only available on-site. Another tip is to pick up a copy of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Passport and Field Guide Book. It is available online or in person. Tons of interesting information about distilleries in Kentucky, if you plan on visiting others as well. Visits, and completing the entire trail, unlock special rewards!

The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and you can tell they really care about what they're doing. The whole property adds to the charm--beautiful views, a relaxed atmosphere, and even some animals wandering around that make it feel like a true Kentucky experience. As a Harvest Hosts location, it's one of the best we've stayed at. Plenty of space, peaceful setting, and just an all-around great place to spend the night after enjoying some bourbon. The tasting on the other hand was a little overpriced but for us it was still very worth it and one of our favorite distilleries all weekend. Lastly, the Photo Booth was a nice touch and made the experience that much more enjoyable! Overall, I would recommend any and everyone to check out Whiskey Thief if you are looking for a unique experience on the trail. The tour was great, even though we had terrible weather with a big storm coming through. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and answered all of my questions without hesitation. The tasting room is super nice and there is plenty of space for a big group so you aren't crowded. I loved that they teach you about the different mashbills and how to tell which is which on their bottles. They have a lot of great items in the gift shop - I bought my dad a shirt and also got one for myself, along with a little baby snifter. Come check it out, you'll be glad that you did!

There were ladies cleaning the outside windows at the log cabin. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and seemed to like their jobs. They allow dogs on the property and inside when making a purchase/taste testing. They gave our dogs treats and the staff welcomed them in. The property is beautiful and great to take dogs on a walk. We enjoyed our day and may go back tomorrow depending on the specials!!
