What's behind the Green Door?…read more Well, I remember a song from my childhood called "Green Door" -it had a honky-tonk piano sound and I kind of remember it got some radio play in the early '60s. I also remember there was a porno movie named "Behind the Green Door". It was a big deal in 1972 and "starred" Marilyn Chambers -the Ivory Snow girl. Fast Forward to today. What's Behind the Green Door up in Collinsville, CT? A very nice restaurant known as the Green Door Restaurant. It's the house restaurant at Bridge Street Live - a music and entertainment venue on the Farmington River in the funky little town of Collinsville. We had dinner at the Green Door tonight and had a pretty favorable experience. We sat outside on the deck and enjoyed a pretty view of the River and enjoyed a singer and his acoustic guitar. So what kind of food might one find behind their Green Door? The menu had seven appetizers ranging from a $6 soup to an $18 Charcuterie Board, three salads ranging from $10 to $14 with a protein add-on between $8-$10 more, five sandwiches with a side for $13 or $14, six personal pizzas ($10-$15), and eight entrees ranging from $14 - $34. We shared a Hummus platter ($10) served with pita wedges, grape tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks, and broccoli florets. The hummus with Roasted Red Pepper was very good, the veggies were cold and crisp, and the pita bread was soft and warm. Not a bad value for ten bucks, but the actual amount of hummus wasn't very generous. I ordered one of the entrees - a Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna Bowl for $18. It was a big serving of six tuna slices with red quinoa & buckwheat, maybe two dozen crispy chickpeas, shaved carrots, sliced avocado, and arugula with a herb lemon dressing. The dish tasted great and was a pretty good value, considering the large serving. We also ordered a Reuben Sandwich ($14) of shaved corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, house made sauerkraut, and Fontina cheese, on Marbled Rye. The sandwich tasted great (especially the bread) but the weak link was the quantity of corned beef - not nearly enough. My Diet Coke $3 and that price speaks for itself -it was high. Our modest dinner ran around $47 (after tax) and I didn't really feel our overall value was there. Yes, the view was nice, the service was friendly, and the menu was varied. If you're attending a show at Bridge Street, it does make a lot of sense to eat here as a convenience. Otherwise, I'm not really convinced to go through that Green Door again.

Our buffet meal, including gratuity and a bartender fee worked out to a rock bottom cost of $27 per person. The meal started off with a pepperoni, cheese and cracker platter before the buffet started. The buffet meal included rolls, salad, a beef, a chicken, and a fish dish, ziti in sauce, mashed potatoes, vegetables, coffee, and chocolate chip cookies. Believe me, the quality of the food was a major topic of conversation. Folks loved the beef dish a lot. The servers and bartender were polite and courteous, the room was nicely decorated, and the sound system worked fine. We were happy with every facet of our event. Nice job Elks!

The Festival grounds (located in Riverfront Park) was enormous. There was a big midway with amusement rides and games, plenty of food trucks, three stages of live music, craft and clothing vendors, a petting zoo, a pub, ice cream stands, apple pies and fritters, and even a 5k Road Race for tomorrow. We had such a fun time, just strolling the grounds, checking out all the food options. We eventually settled on a plate of Tofu Pad Thai and dumplings from Siam. We also picked up a 6-piece order of Apple Fritters and split that between three apple and three pumpkin. I also had a nice visit to the at the Pan De Oro booth and learned they make salsa and tortilla chips right in Hartford! Who knew? We parked at the high school and took a shuttle bus to the gate. Admission was $5 per person. Sure beats the crowded Southington Apple Festival in our opinion.

The staff we worked with were absolutely wonderful, especially Paul, Peyton, and Parker. Peyton worked tirelessly throughout the event to help orchestrate everything and make sure every detail came together perfectly. No matter what we needed, they never told us "no" - they were incredibly accommodating and genuinely cared about making our vision happen. The food was fantastic, everything ran smoothly, and the room looked beautiful. Overall, the event came out even better than we could have imagined, and we are so grateful to the entire team for helping make it such a special and successful day. (Naturally, the small children gravitated toward it- plus it was an eyesore) -Few prices posted in the gift shop; had to ask clerk -Fun Zone for kids was closed and in disrepair. No gate or sign indicating that it was closed until you walked all the way in only to see an empty area with the remains of a ride; the two staff members I spoke to had no idea if or when it would be back up and running. Kids were disappointed. Overall, would not return to this stadium unless some major improvements are made.

New Britain Stadium is the home of the New Britain Bees baseball team. They are a member of the…read moreAtlantic League and are not affiliated with Major League Baseball. Player salaries are capped at $3,000 per month. The league's website says that "more than 40% of Atlantic League players have major league service time" and that "the league averages more than 50 player contract sales to MLB organizations each year". Today we saw the New Britain Bees play the Long Island Ducks on the Fourth of July. Admission was free, seriously all you had to do was show up, go to the ticket window for a ticket, and give that ticket to someone at the gate and you were in. Parking was a modest five bucks, so no complaints there. We went up to the Alvarium Beer Pavilion and enjoyed a White Denim "It tastes like a Blue Moon" and a Cremo "It tastes like a Yeungling". Beers were 7 bucks a glass. After the beers, we grabbed lunch and got a hot dog and a kielbasa for $4 each. They were pretty good sized portions and tasted great (free sauerkraut is a nice touch). The stadium corridors and restrooms are painted bumblebee black and yellow and the stadium looked to be in excellent condition. The staff we interacted with was very nice, especially the young lady at the Alvarium Beer Pavilion who looked on in disgust and fascination as the hot dog eating contest in Coney Island unfurled before us on live TV. We had a lot of laughs wise-cracking about what we saw. Had it not been 96 degrees, we would have stayed a little longer, but free admission, cold beer, a great hot dog, and the crack of a ball against a wooden bat made for a few great hours.
