I can't say enough good things about Thomas Hart. My husband and I were looking to upgrade the landscaping in our new home. I showed Thomas a picture and he went in the office and drew up a design. He and his crew came and planted the plants he suggested based on what I wanted. They even fixed some things the people that built our stone landscape did wrong when putting down the weed barrier and soaker hoses. This is the second year in a row that I've bought my outdoor plants, potting soil and mulch here. I love that they've been around for a while. A small, family owned nursery with many plants to fit your needs. I walked in early afternoon on Friday. I had my list ready to fill my living wall, get fresh potting soil for my hibiscus plants, snag a couple of hanging baskets. I was greeted as soon as someone saw me. I had already started stacking plants on a cart. I showed the nice guy my picture of the wall and asked for recommendations on everything. He quickly pointed me to the last tray of succulents they had. At about $2.50 per plant, I snagged the entire tray. I lucked out on the full sun hanging baskets on sale for $8.99 picking a beautiful, royal purple flower one and another that looked slightly cactus-y with delicate pink to purple flowers. I love hardy ivy on the wall. When the fall hits, I slap them into my front flowerbed for some ground over. The one I put in last fall is doing quite well there now. Let's face it , folks. I'm not a green thumb. Those plants have a fighting chance outside, at least. I got a Mexican petunia perennial, again with deep purple blooms. The potting soil they have is great quality. I learned that cedar mulch is a natural bug repellent so in my cart, ya go. I felt like I got great deals on everything while supporting local and acquiring quality products at great prices. Today, I planted it all! My four hibiscus plants needed new potting soil so they'll start making flowers soon. If you have plant needs and want to support a local nursery, not a mass produced chain, take some time and come in out! I promise you'll be happy you did! What a wonderful discovery this place was. The penultimate local business experience, complete with warm local service with a smile, very reasonable prices, and surprisingly excellent selection - especially for being on such a small plot of land. We wanted some crepe myrtles for the yard, so I asked my wife if she could check out some local options that weren't Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. This place had good reviews (although not a ton), the guy on the phone was friendly, and it sounded like they had good options. Upon arrival, the first thing worth mentioning is blink and you'll miss it. The nursery is surrounded by boat yards, and its sign is relatively small and subtle. So know where you are ahead of time and be ready. Slow down. Next, you'll think, wow... small place... Not so fast. It's deep and amazingly has a LOT to offer. There are large trees for very reasonable prices. There are all kinds of... well, just about everything! Want something else? Let Scott know and he'll do his best to get it for you. Speaking of Scott, Scott Hartwell is the owner and head dude, and his father founded this little gig. Scott is great. Easy to talk to and knowledgeable, he's a natural at this. He was super helpful, and we intend to use him again soon for more crepe myrtles that he didn't have yet in the season. (We got 3 large white ones... I forget the name... maybe 7-8' tall each, at a very good price of $80 each.) Scott and his guys cultivate most of the stuff offsite themselves, which is extra awesome. I saw a very tall mature tree - easily 15' tall, maybe close to 20' - for around $500 that included delivery and planting. Seriously? That's a steal. He had so many large, great trees at reasonable prices... Love this place already. We'll be back very soon! read more

Hey Y'all ~ Native butterfly gardener here- and I was reading some of the reviews that popped up here, and I must put in my two nickels worth: One was from last year in the height of this COVID fiasco, and the review said the staff was "VERY RUDE" and wouldn't answer questions about plants. I would ask: Does the same phone you submitted your review have a search engine? Use it! There's a site www.davesgarden.com where you can look up everything about a certain plant, and get everything you need to know about every one they carry. Be an educated consumer! These great folks are not your teacher, you are! They are very busy nurserymen and it takes a lot of work to move the plants around to keep them alive. You are alive and responsible to keep yourself alive and happy, they can't help if you have a baditude! (Yes I meant to make bad and attitude one word.) Just try going to any big chain store and you will not find better cultivated and cared for varieties. EXCEPT maybe when COVID shut down a lot of suppliers, therefore not much was available anywhere! TRUE GARDENERS ARE PATIENT, if you aren't either of the two, (gardener or patient) what chance does an air plant have in your care? I would suspect and fully question your motives in the first place. I totally LOVE Hartwells!! I live in Lake Dallas and it is the only privately owned nursery for miles! A lot of serious gardeners and landscapers shop here, and we have developed a righteous relationship with these fabulous folks. I have had hits an misses with every place I've ever shopped for plants, but I keep trying and it always pays off. I'm here for the long haul, and thank God for Hartwell's! read more

I have to give a HUGE shout out for Hartwell Nursery on the frontage road of 35E , between Valley Ride and Justin Road. I'm so tired of the lame quality of these big box stores. Great selection and they were very helpful and knowledgeable. My wife stopped in for some advice on a sick Magnolia tree - rather than sell us on something, they diagnosed it as weed killer poisoning and ust told us to flush with lots of water. The tree came back to life! So when we needed some plants for a shady spot, we knew where to go and they knew just what we needed. Had to wait for a few minutes, because they are popular, but when we got to the front of the line, they gave us their full attention and we left with what we needed. Prices were reasonable and the plants were BIG! Hartwell's is our go-to nursery for future projects. read more

It seems like they don't want to sell anything. They were very unhelpful and showed no interest in helping me find the tree I was looking for. Unfortunately, this kind of bad service is become all too common these days. They will be singing a different tune when the next recession hits and they need our business. read more

The variety of natives, expertise and time to roam. I found a number of native standards that I couldn't find in the big box stores.

Do not ever have Mr. Hartwell and crew do anything but plants for you. Even that now has fallen in workmanship. But the big issue for us is they took seven months to lay concrete for a small patio and build a small waterfall. The waterfall was never completed and its falling apart exposing the liner. The waterfall was built a few months ago but had a leak in it where it was losing over two inches of water a day. We checked with other reputable Koi pond and waterfall builders and it was obvious it had a leak. They tried for months to find and fix the leak, obviously acknowledging there was a leak and were unsuccessful. They rebuilt part of it, no luck. They patched and glued and glued and patched rocks to where the patching was all over. Once again to no avail. Finally after having zero luck at finding and fixing the leak, the builder came to me and said it was normal, he checked with current customers and experts. They are going to close the ticket (something we never signed to agree to it's completion). One mistake we did make is a few months earlier when they were wrapping up the build, we went ahead and paid the the other 50% we owed. And let me add, they never were there when they said they would be, they always put new clients ahead of finishing our job. Allowing them seven months showed we were extremely patient with them. So anyway, still not satisfied with them closing the ticket, I called the owner and told him the situation, obviously he knew about it and just kept sending the same people expecting different results. Mr. Hartwell did agree to and did come out to see it for the first time. He poured a bit of blue dye (actually algae cleaner) and let it run into the reservoir and said "no leak" He stated it was probably a combination of the wind, splash and evaporation that taking water away so quickly. They did cut back on the strength of the waterfall via valves, but zero water was saved. We still are losing over two inches a day, and that was in the winter when it started. I emailed Mr. Hartwell and told him I checked with other companies and it is definitely leaking, over two inches a day would be over a foot of water in a small waterfall pond in a week. That is not normal. As far as falling apart, the rocks in the reservoir, they are falling off the sides and exposing lining to where it looks extremely "handyman" built. Mr. Hartwell with the exception of his visit has been very unprofessional about this and will not respond to any emails nor will his employees. They got their money and have moved on. This has been extremely frustrating for my wife and I so we emailed Mr. Hartwell telling him to either come and finish the waterfall, pay the bill for a third party to complete his work, or give us a refund. His only reply was "I will not pay a third party". We haven't heard a word since. We unfortunately let them know we are in the process of suing them for the unfinished business since they left it incomplete. We will also be contacting the BBB to lodge a complaint and any other agency we can. We paid hard earned money to have something nice in our back yard that works properly and doesn't fall apart in less than a year. read more

I was thoroughly impressed. I happened upon this nursery by total accident not intending to shop for plants or trees. I spent nearly an hour there. I was greeted immediately and told that if I had any questions or needed help loading anything they were there to help. They had quite a variety. I live across the metroplex but I know where I'm going to go to get my next fruit tree! read more

The staff here is VERY RUDE. My mother and her friend went here to buy some plants and whenever they asked questions about a plant, a male worker snapped at them for no reason and told them to "stop bothering him". When they asked about the prices of the plants, he yelled at them and told them to "Get Out, Period". He then slammed the door in their face and kicked them out of the store without giving a reason. DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE. I am utterly disgusted. read more

Very seldom do I leave a poor review, I usually just move on. This time I must say I agree with the reviews concerning customer service and presentation of the staff. My wife had gone to purchase specific plants for our landscaping project. She first called and confirmed they did have the plants. Hartwells did have the plants were many of the large box nurseries did not. Thinking, why not also help support our local businesses she ventured to the nursery. Once there she was ignored and basically brushed off after answering a couple questions, to find the plants on her own. There was no assistance in loading the plants to her cart and no assistance in loading the plants to her car. Yes, this is a nice touch especially from a local business that has been in business since 1964. The only comment that was made to her was "are you ready to check out." Outstanding service/ great pricing. I had an awful neighbor who was unkind at best to the workers. Even asked if round up would kill the trees they had just planted. Evil people. Hartwell's not only called me immediately to inform me of my so called neighbor, they had my back. Pics, documentations etc.......they informed me that they would be there for me should anything happen and if the situation would become a legal matter, in this day of me me me...... I found Hartwell's employees are honest kind people. Where can you find that nowadays. I will ALWAYS use Hartwell's!!!!!!!! read more

I have been coming here for at least 20 years. I just got through with a rather large pool landscape project for my house. Scott and Thomas did a great job of helping me pick out the right plants. I gave Scott a 3D picture of the yard and he took it from there. He did offer to come to my house, but I was anxious to get it done. My yard looks amazing and I firmly believe I got a great deal. I hired Hartwell's to handle some landscape needs and it could not have been a worst experience. I left messages for Scott Hartwell in an effort to resolve the problems with the work performed by his company and did not receive a return call. I have since hired another company to repair the faulty work preformed by Hartwell. Thomas was the project manager assigned to my home who I found to be a loud Mouth B.S.r I am very tolerant to mistakes as they are part of business. Its how a company handles those mistakes that is the difference between Hartwell's and a stand up reproable business which Hartwell's is not. read more

Having just moved to flower mound one week ago, we needed to spruce up the exterior of our new home. Noticed a few local nurseries but ended up talking to the folks at Hartwell's. Naturally, it was very crowded due to the season. Despite that, the owner, Scott Hartwell, and Melissa helped me immediately. They reviewed pictures, and made recommendations. We found the nursery to be very well-stocked, with beautiful plant material, excellent pricing and over the top service. I will definitely recommend them whenever asked!! read more

We also brought a tree at Hartwell's that they planted and it died. I won't even buy there anymore after they failed to make good on the warranty. We were too trusting and they kept putting us off until the warranty had expired. Feel like we just threw away a lot of money. :/ read more

We used Hartwell's to design and complete a planter in the front yard. The work is gorgeous. It was well designed, and Thomas, the designer, worked really hard to incorporate existing elements to reduce costs and waste. He was very receptive when we asked for changes. However, Thomas was very disorganized. I'll give him a pass on the timing, since there was quite a bit of weather going on, and I'm sure the schedule was crazy. He would give us arrival estimates, and then come late or not at all. We were quoted 3 days effort, but I am sure we only ever received 3 half days. Also, we had to remind him repeatedly of items on the contract which weren't finished. The last item on the contract was never finished. He was supposed to lift the fence panel and gate to allow for extra space for the sod going in. It was never discussed why this wasn't finished, and additionally, they broke the hinge off the gate by not completing this step. We're not sure if we can repair it. Generally, we would use Hartwell again, but we would insist on a point by point walkthrough at the end of the contract to make sure everything was completed. read more
