Food is excellent. While presentation is more like an old style cafeteria since the like to use "Monkey Dishes" I'm sure that's fo portion control. Guess poodles with pre measured sizes is out of the question. However, great food home town café ambiance. Good people. Wait staff is excellent and cheerfully. I've driven by this place so many times and finally tried it because there was a 30 minute wait at another spot downtown at 10am on a Saturday. Our party of 5 was seated immediately. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for the table, fabulous. They have a full array of offerings including breakfast, salads, sandwiches and even chili. The homemade hash browns were a standout, but everything was fresh and delicious. A couple of us cleaned our plates and the others ate as much as we could. Well, a year went by and we tried breakfast here again. Seemed clean and the staff was attentive and friendly. Only small issue was the omelets we ordered were obviously a two egg omelet and small. The food is good homestyle food, and the service is fantastic. There are few places anymore where you get coffee refill without asking and tracking down a waitstaff member. We were looking for a place to have breakfast in Norman that we hadn't been too before. We read the mixed reviews on Hassler's and figured we would at least try it. We were greeted by two friendly waitresses and seated immediately. Our food was brought out quickly and was great! Not sure why there are any negative reviews about this place but then again anyone can have an off day! Restaurant is clean, we were definitely the youngest people in there. I revisited during a recent trip back home and this diner is still the best in Norman in my book! It's cleaner than I remember, which is good for most, but takes away from that old diner feel that I love. Service was great and as always, it's cash only. This is my "secret" diner stop where my friends and I love to grab a chicken fried steak breakfast special for $8.99, which is off the menu. The meals are so cheap and so good! The diner is very down home and full of locals, your waitress will make you feel like you're in a small town diner. The wait staff and food is great, was there for breakfast this morning and someone called in a phone order, the cook was cursing and yelling and throwing stuff in the kitchen, because he didn't want to make the lunch special at 715. There was a 9 year old in our party who had to hear his fit throwing, very unprofessional! I feel sorry for the girl waiting on us who has to put up with his poor attitude. Do not go to this restaurant. The only thing worst than the food is the waitress. I found a hair in my food and when we told the waitress her response was "well you ate most of it." Been a while since I have been there since I recently moved, but went to breakfast there today and was really good. Home fries were improved, great seasoning and flavor, friend got the Chile relleno omelette and said it was delicious. Excellent seasoning and great tasting meat lover skillet. Always been a good breakfast spot but these recent changes to the menu items take it up a notch. Kudos to the kitchen and management for adjusting menu and flavor profile of your items. Hassler's has been on Porter for many years. It has a loyal following and serves the traditional diner favorites for breakfast and lunch. You get a good amount of food for not much money. It's a classic, no frills diner. The problem is the food isn't seasoned well. I got the chicken fried steak lunch, which comes with 2 sides and a roll. First of all, they heat the rolls up in a microwave. This is something I do at home, but I don't expect at a restaurant, even one as cheap and simple as Hassler's. The steak was large, but it was deep fried. It became crispy, but the batter wasn't seasoned. Or, if it was seasoned, it wasn't seasoned well. So, it tasted like a deep fried piece of meat and flour, nothing else. The mashed potatoes were thick, but again, lacked seasoning. The gravy was creamy and great consistency. It needed pepper, but it was probably the best part of the meal. I had okra for my other side, it's also deep fried, but the breading wasn't overly thick, and was seasoned better than the steak breading. The okra and gravy are what saves Hassler's from a 1 star review. I've not been to Hassler's for breakfast, and I will note it's popular for breakfast. So, I might give it a shot. Classic diner and diner fare. Food was good, service was good, though not necessarily "nice", but she got the job done. Kind of what you expect from a classic diner. It is cash only, but there is an atm not far from the place. My wife had an omelette and I had the heavenly hash with biscuits and gravy. My over easy eggs were cooked perfectly, my wife's omelette was delicious (I had some). They serve the eggs unseasoned so you can do it yourself. Biscuits and gravy....biscuits were warm, tender, a bit flakey....gravy needed some sausage and a little more pepper. Okay it's no 5 star restaurant but the food was cooked well and tasted great. The skillet proved to be more food in one sitting than I imagined. I can't really give the food a review because when I got to the door of the place I noticed the "Cash Only" sign. How any place can stay in business in the 21st century without accepting credit/debit cards is beyond me. I kinda feel sorry for this place once all the old-timer baby-boomers die out, because they're the only people who still carry cash. I guess that explains why so many other reviewers here have commented about the food not being seasoned though... old folks don't seem to like their food to have any seasoning, and the primary clientele of this restaurant is definitely old folks. read more
