Be careful when you blink, you may miss this gem of a place. We lucked upon this place while traveling on a ski trip. Pulling up, it looks like the same ole old restaurants you pass through in all the small towns BUT don't let it deceive you. The food was nothing but amazing. First off they have a "drive through" which was clutch traveling with kids so we didn't have to go in. There was a menu before the window and then you pull up to the window and give the person your order - face to face. The two people who we spoke to were nothing less than kind with exceptional customer service. I'm not sure if this is a family owned and operated place but you get that vibe with the quality of service. Plus, I believe they cooked our order fresh (or if not, sure tasted fresh). Cherry Limaeade - full disclosure I am not one for cherry limeade... AT ALL. But, my husband ordered one for the kiddos and as I watched the gentleman squeeze the limes fresh, I had to order one these bad boys for myself. Totally have nothing to compare to since I never order these but have to say it was nice and refreshing. Chicken Tenders - these were bomb! The chicken was moist (sorry for those who hate that word but what better way to explain) and juicy. The size of the tenders was thick and hearty compared to the skinny small size of chain competitors. Nothing more disappointing than a chicken tender with barely any chicken that's just all thick flavorless breading. This was perfectly all chicken with a thin amount of breading. And the flavor! Not sure what seasonings they use, but it was very on point with flavor. Fries (similar to what I read on reviews) were a little meh but didn't need to be the star of the show since the tenders were. Cheeseburger - my son ate a majority of this but I tried the remainder of the patty by itself. Which I was also surprised had a very good flavor vs what you get at bland chain competitors. Puff - what is this so called puff? Luckily it happened to come with the meals we ordered otherwise I wouldn't have known to order it. It was a nicely soft fried puff of "I don't even know what". One thing I can compare it to is maybe like a funnel cake taste in a puff version - minus the sweet...unless you put some warm honey in it. Well I am writing this one as we go through the process. The place looks sketchy from the outside ... but it is small town TX and those places are usually gems. The inside is even more sketchy .. bathroom was filthy, floors are dirty. The man taking my order seemed upset he had to answer a few questions for an out of towner. Let's hope the food is good. People keep pouring into here :) ---------- Ok .. I ordered a cheeseburger combo. It is made fresh so it takes more time. Well good for them I like a chili cheeseburger cause that is what I got. The burger patty is thick and the buns held up well to the chili and cheese. It was good! The fries are okay .. average. The first impression is the building, very run down and does not look clean. The second was having to fight flies the entire time we there. Finally, the food. I had the cheeseburger and fries. The fries were pretty good but the cheeseburger was not. I'm not sure how to even explain it. It looked good but the meat didn't look or taste like beef. Don't let the name or the building stop you from dining here. This hidden little gem is a stop for us every time we pass through. We got there about 45 minutes before closing and the food was cooked fresh. My husband got the fish and coleslaw and said it was the best he has had. The cherry limeade is my sweetness. My kind of place! Small town hole in the wall with great food! This place is old, and not pretty, and I love it. Every small town has its Dairy Queen. But Anson is special cause it has Hatahoe. First the name. It's hay ta hoe. Man had a farm but he hated to hoe. Opened a restaurant and called it hate to hoe (Hatahoe). Now that's funny. Really. True story. Anyway, their famous for their chicken strips and catfish, but they have lots of other stuff too. I tried the combo plate. Plenty of food for a big guy like me. The seasoning of the batter on the chicken and catfish is delicious. Loved the coleslaw. I like mine juicy and sweet. Hamburgers looked really good. I'll try it next time. Stopped in due to the great reviewers. Had a BBQ combo plate ( pulled brisket sandwich with fries). Both were pretty good. About average BBQ on a fresh hamburger bun. Great little mom and pop place...feels like an old Dairy Queen inside. I ordered the large steak finger plate. I'd argue with the "large" which is apparently defined as 4 fingers. But, they were as tasty as any I've ever had and a bit larger than the average steak finger. A good size order of fries, tasty, crispy toast and a puff (fried biscuit) with honey made for a filling, comfort food lunch. Sweet tea was just right! $11.63 including tax. One of the best places to stop while traveling to have fried fish, creamy ice cream, or a cherry limeade that puts this place on the map. We will be stopping here again. My husband and I have passed by this establishment a few times traveling between central Texas to west Texas and vise versa and we laugh and joke about the name every time ., we finally decided to have a look and try this place out . But this is now the second time while driving through and using their drive through service (I was only one in drive through) after about 8-10 minutes I'm asked to pull around and they will wave at me when my food is ready. It was a cheeseburger combo, I pull around and wait another 10 minutes, walk inside to check on food and was told it will be awhile more. This place is a total dive. It definitely looks sketch from the outside but I am well aware those are usually the best. It has a neon "cherry limeade" sign otherwise I probably wouldn't have noticed it at all. Of course I tried the cherry limeade and it was delicious. I got a chicken tender basket which was piping hot and nothing out of the ordinary but good. However it came with "puffs". I wasn't quite sure what they were and they just look like rolls or something to me, until you bite into them and they are yummy fried bread. Kinda like a homemade donut without the sweetness. That made this place a winner for me. The rest of the menu was burgers, sandwhiches etc. It has a bunch of wacky pictures and memorabilia on the wall, mismatched booths and chairs. The fried smell was in full effect but surprisingly I didn't leave smelling like it. By noon the place was jumping and the weird thing it was quiet...like eerily quite.
