Without a doubt the BEST market in the Charlotte area for any and all things related to making amazing Japanese dishes at home. The staff is so friendly and helpful, and they welcome beginner Japanese speakers like me, so don't be afraid to try and ask questions in Japanese, as they appreciate the effort! What I was expecting to be on a shelf was easily found in the refrigerator by the store associate. Great selection of sauces, staples, and snacks. Refrigerator section is a bit light on prepared, ready to eat favorites. Do not miss the dessert and mochi freezer by the cash register/check out line. Such a wonderful place to visit. My daughter has been going on and on about trying Japanese treats and wanting to visit. My boyfriend found this shop and we visited and got all kinds of goodies! I was so impressed with the selection and the quality of their desserts. We purchased multiple things for her and my son but grabbed us some cream puff desserts for our long drive home (about 40 ish min) and they were amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful in locating some items that my little one specifically called out. Their pricing was very reasonable and the whole store itself was laid out so you could find things easily. [Grade: S] I've always been on the lookout for an authentic Japanese grocery store in search of quality fish for sushi-making. Not only did I find that here, they have a wide selection of Japanese products that you could probably only get online and at higher prices. Although not fresh like an open fish market, their frozen selection of sushi quality fish taste absolutely incredible as if it was never frozen. They carry salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallops, tilapia, eel, and other types of yummy goodness you'd expect at your local sushi restaurant. They also sell other things like sushi rice, knives, seaweeds, and anything else you'd need for sushi making! Along with this they have a wide range of frozen goods like gyoza, takoyaki, frozen Japanese meals, and more. They also have a big selection of Japanese alcohol like sake and beers. As you'd expect, they also carry a number of noodle packages and ramen that could only be beat in my opinion by the big asian grocery stores. If you're looking for any plating, bowls, spoons, or any other kitchen or dining goods they definitely have to add a Japanese touch to your home! If you have a sweet tooth, they have a whole isle dedicated to sweet goodies straight from Japan! Honestly there's so much at this amazing store and I could go on and on about what they have and what I think about it all, but I think it's best for you to find out for yourself! Once you come here, I definitely guarantee you will be back for more and more. If you have any questions about something your looking for or if you don't know what something is, be sure to ask the store workers as they're very helpful in making recommendations and finding things! I was looking for an international market close by to see if I could find some Massaman Curry Paste and though I didn't find it there, I did discover a cool, mostly Japanese store. It's small but it's packed with so much cool Japanese stuff that you need a tour guide to peruse the whole store. The woman working in the store was very helpful whenever I asked her what something was but I'd have to have monopolized all her time if I could because there were so many unfamiliar things. I tried to get as many pictures as I could without looking totally weird for taking pictures of everything but I could just say, "I'm doing it for the YELP!" They have some produce, housewares, fish for sashimi, lots of fun treats, teas, facial products, make up, toys, candy, fake food kits, teapots, cups and a lot of stuff I wasn't familiar with. I ended up buying some nori, sesame seeds, pickled ginger, wasabi, green onions, bok choy, soy sauce, ginger chews and face mask kits and tofu. I'll definitely go back when I have more time to explore. You'd be surprised at how much they have in this space, they have maximized every inch without it being junky. It would be nice to have more signs in English, with a description of what some of the stuff is that doesn't have an English translation on the label. And I forgot to mention that they do sell Kimchi paste so if you've ever wanted to make kimchi without buying all the separate ingredients, you might want to give it a try. It's a bit pricey at $19.99 but might be worth it when you consider how much a small amount of Kimchi is. I make my own but if I didn't I would probably try it. Pro tip I suggest bring a cooler as they have plenty of frozen meats and other delicacies. Parking spots were 15 minutes only don't if they in force towing. Cool spot. read more

I procrastinated long enough on reviewing my lil gem of a Japanese supermarket. Being the only one in Charlotte that I know of, with a great selection and clean shop, I can't stop myself from loading up my cart n even buying a takoyaki pan. From Hawaii, I've bn missing my Asian roots so this peace of heaven hits the spot alright. It's a shop that everyone in NC has to at least visit once to get a whiff of Japan, especially the snack aisle. The only thing that was missing was the Japanese "soft" flour that I was so hoping to find there but it was sold out. That's a "must find" for baking a super soft Japanese cake. I hope they'll restock it someday. So funny but when I use to shop NJ's Edgewater Mitsuwa or Broad Ave HMart, I'd whizz thru quickly but with lil Hatoya being so precious I wish I could be a chameleon hiding on the wall. I've loved Hatoya since I was a kid, it was always such a special treat when we went shopping here and as an adult I still love it just as much but for many more reasons that the cool looking snacks and candy lol. The people are always so kind and I love being able to get some cold soba and kamaboko, ramen packs, and REAL delicious bottled green tea that's not ruined by sugar and added flavors. I only wish we had a Hatoya in Rock Hill too, I'd be there every other day though! read more

I had been coming to Hatoya on occasion for years but now I live TOO close. That translates to coming here a lot. With my history in studying Japanese, living in Japan for a year, loving the food and working at a Japanese company for so long you can imagine how psyched I am about this shop. If you ever had questions, it's legit. They're the real deal here. There are lots of international grocers around Charlotte. Lots of Asian ones in particular including Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern. That I know of this is the only one that is strictly Japanese. They sell a few re-branded American made Japanese snacks and foods. Things made locally to bring the price down. They might poke out a little bit into something Korean or Chinese from time to time but otherwise, this place is 100% Japanese. They have snack foods including candy and chocolate that even appeals to the American senses. However you can also find the crunchy crackers that end up often as bar snacks. Nori maki would be one of them: a crunchy rice cracker coated in a sort of soy sauce and wrapped in dried seaweed. I love yokan (or youkan), a traditional Japanese snack - they've got it! There are fresh veggies and fruits including unusual ones that are keyed to Japanese cooking: bitter melon and lychee to name a few. Whole bags of rice or microwave individual servings. Curry mix, if you're a fan of Japanese curry (and I am). Soup stocks, Japanese kewpie mayo, sauces for katsu, tempura, and more. Not to mention the magazines, books, movies, newspapers and local adverts for Japanese organizations in the Charlotte area. Certainly last but not least are all the dishes, kitchen items, cleaners and hygiene products certain to round out the desires of anyone looking for a bit of Japan. The place seems to be a bit short-staffed but they have always been polite and helpful. While it might be a long ways away from Japan-proper it's like a little slice of the country right here in Charlotte's back yard. read more

Hatoya is awesome! They have everything, even my favorite kind of ready to cook pan fry yakisoba noodles - Marusan. I think it's the best and it's hard to find in Charlotte. It's a small shop but they have everything you could need to make your own sushi at home. They have all kinds of tsukemono, tea, okake, miso, wakame, kombu, nori, candy like Pokki and gummies, pounded rice red bean pasties, Japanese bread, all kinds of pre-packaged treats and snacks... I could list a hundred things I haven't seen since the last time I was actually in Japan. The store is impeccably clean and run by the nicest Japanese people you ever met. They were very patient with me when I was asking dumb questions like what kind of sauce to use when I try to make my own yaki-onigiri at home. It's down by pineville but the fact that they're a little cheaper than other places around Charlotte means it's worth the drive. read more

An absolutely incredible Japanese supermarket. The employee who was working there was super helpful and very kind. She helped me locate a few things in the store that I had trouble finding, recommended a few products to try, and even gave me some advice on the best way to defrost some frozen tuna I bought to make sushi. Speaking of sushi, I ran into someone who said they were one of the sushi chefs that worked at O-Ku in South End. That's how you know this place is legit. This gem of a Japanese grocery market sits in Pineville, and I am glad my wife and I found it. Since the pandemic stay at home orders were put into place, it has been difficult to order Japanese groceries online from many sources located on the West Coast. Being in the Midlands of South Carolina, the few Asian markets here do not have the selection of Japanese groceries that meets our needs. Prior to a day trip up to Charlotte, I looked up Japanese grocery markets in Charlotte, and Hatoya Mart popped up. When we made it there after some shopping at South Park, it felt like we won a grocery sweepstakes contest. We found S&B Spicy Cod Roe pasta sauce for making Mentaiko spaghetti, Sun Noodle shoya frozen ramen sets (much better than any instant ramen), menma (seasoned bamboo shoots), fresh produce and some of my favorite Japanese snacks. The people there were very helpful and it definitely made the one hour trip up to Charlotte worthwhile. We promise we will be back soon. read more

So many varities of Japanese kit Kats. They have the most unique and fun Japanese foods. I love their selection of sushi-quality seafood. Prices are a fraction of what you'll pay somewhere else. We have eaten sashimi every other day by buying enough to put 1-2 weeks' worth in our freezer, and then just picking something out the day before to defrost in the fridge. After 1-2 weeks, it doesn't taste as fresh to me, even though it's in the freezer. Maybe it's just a coincidence or just in my head. My sample size is still relatively small. My favorites are the scallops, tuna, and octopus. (I feel unethical eating octopus, so I don't get it as often, but it's so delicious.) I can definitely vouch for those. There are several options for the tuna, but they will point you to the best one if you ask for help. I can't vouch as much for the other seafood because I only buy the things I like. Last time I went, I bought all of their scallops (sorry!). I eat it plain and raw without any soy sauce or anything and am fairly picky about quality since I used to work as a sushi chef and am scared of food poisoning. If something tastes the slightest bit fishy/wrong, it's out. I wouldn't normally post this because I'm afraid of competition for my favorites, but I'm moving out of the area in a couple of months. read more

I am really trying to be fair, however, the goods here are very overpriced. Literally everything is a lot more expensive than other Asian stores in town. I visited another boutique Asian grocer in uptown and I thought the price was higher than normal, but this store is even higher in price. Hatoya does have sashimi frozen for sale, meats, vegs, a whole isle of Japanese noodle. The store is pretty clean and there is pastry by the checkout counter and a whole wall of Japanese rice. Most parking spots near the store are limited to 15 minutes. The people who work here are nice, but got my checkout basket mixed up with another person's. All in all it's fine if you need to get emergency items and don't want to hike all the way to G mart or Grand Asia, but otherwise, it isn't worth the extra cost and limited selection. read more

First visit today, and I am so pleased. Since moving to Charlotte a year ago, I had not found an excellent go-to Asian market. Now, I have! It is clean, well-organized, the prices are fair, there's no language barrier, the selection of products (both fresh and shelf) is excellent. I was especially delighted by the fact that they have sushi-grade tuna (not even Whole Foods here carries this) and octopus and true, gluten-free buckwheat soba. They also carry a wide array of FRESH greens and veggies! I so look forward to going back, and hope others will patronize them frequently, too, as small businesses everywhere try to navigate their way through this pandemic.
