I always go to this store. Hats are beautiful, elegant and sophisticated. Today, 7/12/25, I had one of the worst experiences. I got there and there was this white, tall, redish hair lady. I was in need to a hat, sun was really powerful today and the heat was unbearable. She said welcome and she looked at us from head to toes. I am Puerto Rican, not white, no tall, no straight, redish hair. She said that in order to try the hats I have to use a hairnet. I understood, took one and start trying the hats. I asked which one was the best to cover face and head from the sun. I noticed her uncomfortable. She explained briefly. My wife tried to sip a little bit of water that she had in a cup. She abruptly said to her, no drinking or eating is allowed. My wife understood, saw a garbage can and throwed the cup there. She got incredible mad, took the cup, open the door and throwed the water outside; almost over some woman feet. She walked to the back of the store and right behind me, she said "these people". These people mean us, the people different from others, people that are not white like her. I can understand the stubborn brains, the lack of intelligence and the lack of empathy to other. What I do not understand is the lack of desire to kill the ignorance. I was not there to steal, to offend nobody. I was ready to spend between 100 to 120 in a good hat. She was so ingnorant, so full of her own biases that she could not put aside her prejudices in order to make money for her store or her boss' store. This is the country that we are living now. Soon enough we will read signs saying " non white people are not allowed". It is a shame. read more

We strolled in here and ended up leaving with two hats we didn't know we needed. Great choices and selection and very high quality. The staff are quick to assist help with what you're looking for or to offer things you might not immediately see. The day we went the ladies special event hats were on sale 40 percent off. All the styles were of impeccable quality and of various varieties. Check this place out you never know you might just find a hat you didn't know you needed. Be prepared to pay a higher dollar for a higher quality. read more

Bottom Line: A large selection including practical hats and novelty hats. Hats In The Belfry has been in downtown Annapolis for decades. I remember buying a fun beenie there in high school - the type with the twirling propeller on top! My friend and I would drive around town in her convertible and that hat had enough power for a vertical take off! I digress . . . Anyway, what I like about Hats In The Belfry is that they have hats of all styles ranging from warm wool hats to fancy derby hats to Sunday church hats and beach hats. Whether you need a hat for a special or occasion or everyday, they have you covered. The store is well organized and the hats are nicely displayed. The staff is friendly too. read more

Love this store! In the heart of downtown with lots of other cute shops nearby. They have an extensive selection of well-made hats, most which are made specifically for them so you won't find them anywhere else. Prices are steep, but the quality is there. They also have a wide variety of styles, a little bit of something for everyone. Sadly for me, I found way too many hats that I liked and since they don't offer any kind of discount (e.g. frequent flier) for big purchases I only walked away with two. On the upside, they had a sale online a week after I visited where I got to snag the other two that I liked (at fairly discounted prices!) The service was friendly and their hats either come sized (largest on top if you're in store) or with an adjustable strap to fit most. Would love to see them offer a loyalty program for customers who love hats. read more

Gorgeous hats! But today a very rude pixie cut employee discouraged my mother and I from trying on items, condescendingly telling us "its expensive." Im not sure what compelled her to say something so classist and elitist, especially since my mother had been telling me about this store and was eager to buy me a gift from here. Crazy awesome selection, very good quality, and their website delivers! I was in Annapolis for the Food & Wine fest and walked in here just to try on hats for fun. Ended up falling in love with a winter cap, but sadly they didn't have the color I wanted.... so I promptly ordered it from the website. It came in about a week and matched exactly the size/knit/color as the picture online. The styles are very unique and the staff very helpful.. can't say enough good things about this store. Also, check for the sales (both in store and online), you can get a pretty great buy. read more

This is my 2nd visit while traveling to Annapolis. I have been a guest of friends and this is where they anchor their boat when we come. Although the hats are beautiful and unique, Hats in the Belfry customer service and salespeople are aloof and flat out rude. There is very little attention to customers or sense of wanting to help a visitor while trying to sell moderate to very expensive hats. On both occasions I was interested in items well over the $300 range and each time they've acted as though they don't need or care for my business. And that's exactly what happened...myself and 4 other women left the store because of how they acted. High end real estate does not warrant high end attitude. read more

A note: I was coming to replace a hat that I got for $15 as a throw in to some online order, but which served me well for everything from hiking to nights out on the town to business on Capitol Hill. I was absolutely infuriated when I lost that hat. It's hard to imagine beating that find for price and quality. I was, however, pretty pleased with this small specialty hat retailer in Annapolis. While I'm not a hat expert, I did work in another type of specialty retail, and there were a number of things here that appealed to me. It's open to the street and a welcoming location. Unlike a lot of retail, it's man-friendly, and the store is neatly dichotomized into male and female halves. And my presence was acknowledged without me being put under any real pressure. I hate pushy salespeople, and I've been on the other end of it where I'm deciding how to interact with a customer. All this being said, their selection of actual hats was pretty respectable, too. A wide range of styles, from baseball caps to tophats, as well as a few other related fashion items. I met no resistance while trying on virtually their entire fedora selection for size and feel, and a mirror (with, for some reason, emblazoned mustaches on it) was conveniently posted nearby. The hats here aren't cheap of course, but what I ultimately found, while not a steal like its predecessor, was about what I was hoping for: something that effectively blocks the sun's rays while striking a tasteful aesthetic, and was comfortably within my (modest) budget. All of which goes to say, I can recommend this particular hat store. read more

This store is amazing. There are all types of hats and a wonderful selection of vintage numbers too. Some of the hats are a little pricey but the price range is full so you don't have to spend a lot if you don't want. The shop is split into womens and mens hats and sells other little trinkets too. There is a 20s influence in there and this is evident in some of the pieces. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it. This place is an absolute treasure! Great selection of hats for men & women! I went for a tweed sport cap which was just what I was looking for. So impressed by the selection that I also bought my son a dashing grey fedora! The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Sales Lady had on a cute Kate Middleton hat and the Sales Man sported a snappy sports cap. Annapolis was so chilly today that a hat was a good thing to have. I don't know why hats are not popular for today's fashionable people! They should be! Nothing worse than seeing a gent wearing a topcoat with a stocking cap! Fun little shop with a great selection of hats. My wife bought two when we were there in May. The selection and quality is great, and it was also nice that they were able to ship to our house, as these things wouldn't travel well on the plane. One complaint is that the hats were a little pricy, which is ok, given the quality - I just felt that for the prices that they charged they should have furnished a suitable hat box for each hat. They instead used two boxes that were poorly constructed and not sized properly for the two hats that my wife bought. read more

So my wife and I walk in with the intention of buying her a couple hats, yes cheaper on Amazon, but what the heck, we can say we bought it in Annapolis. So we ask the question we ask every store. Do you offer military discounts? The response "No! And the owner never has". Now that statement alone would mean nothing, but when you turn your back away from the customer, start putting the hats away we indented to purchase and say it in a condescending manner. Stopped in this store during the boat show on Saturday. My girlfriend asked the salesman if he had anything to accommodate a larger than normal head. After showing her one hat, which didn't fit, he snottily told her that she should look for a man's hat instead. Awesome products, awesome staff, fun and funky shop and a wide variety of things other than hats. Need a trilby and some suspenders? Done. A top hat and an umbrella? Done. Regardless of gender, Hats in the Belfry will have something for you. My wife and I both have a ton of hats for work or just casual wear. I will admit that this place is kind of 'you get what you pay for'. The hats are a little on the steep side, but the products are worth it and they will steam and fit your hat for you any time you bring it in. read more

So this just might be my favorite store in all of Annapolis and hands-down my favorite shop downtown. I frequent the shop on a fairly regular basis, whenever the budget allows (I have never walked out empty-handed). They keep a pretty good selection of hats in stock and are happy to let you try on any one in the shop that you desire (yes, even the $228 Makins), no questions asked. The new remodel of the shop is fantastic and is a real standout along main street, very inviting and comfortable to hang out and shop in. They also have 3 other local shops and are happy to transfer items between stores if they do not carry it in Annapolis (Jen is awesome!). Another pleasant surprise for me has been the outstanding quality and design of their house-brand hats. I have several of the Purple Label Belfry fedoras as well as one of the Belfry Streets and they are really great pieces. This place definitely knows their hats and I will be a customer for many more years to come. read more
