There are surf shops everywhere along Highway 12 and not nearly enough information to choose between them. (We liked to stop at places with a friendly, well-worn vibe.) Hatteras Island Boardsports is a good place to stop. The gentleman here opened his doors a few minutes early when he saw us pulling up, sold my wife a replacement leash for her board, and then offered all sorts of helpful advice-- he pulled up some surf cameras on the store computer and showed them to us, warned us about a surfing contest that had taken over one of the most popular beaches, and directed us across the street to the Avon pier, which ultimately disclosed some surfable waves. I just wish we'd bought more from him-- if you're new to the area, you could do well by going here to orient yourself. [Bonus: he had a cute smallish dog named Banana that looked something like a Jack Russell Terrier crossed with something stocky. It liked having its ears scratched.] read more

When I visit North Carolina I love checking out surf shops, meeting some locals, and picking up fresh threads for summer. Hatteras Island Board Sports is probably the best surf shop I've ever visited in North Carolina. Over the years I've purchased 2 wetsuits from these guys, a ton of board shorts, sandals, and casual wear. They always seem to have the best selection of casual surf wear at great prices. While I've never purchased any surfboards from the shop the staff seems knowledgeable and friendly enough to help out everyone from first timers to diehards without the "too cool" vibe you often find at area surf shops. If you're heading to Cape Hatteras to surf/windsurf you'd be a fool to pass up Hatteras Island Board Sports... even if you don't need anything you might find something that you like that you wouldn't otherwise get at your local surf shop. I love this shop! I have spend alot of time in Avon and I always have to make a trip to HIB! I bought an unusual Volcom shirt there 3 years ago that I still get compliments on and of course my favorite Reefs. The guys that own the shop are really fun and helpful. I have been going down to the Outer Banks for over 15 years. I found Hatteras Island Boardsports located at Avon in 2004 when they were hosting a military surf contest and after party. I have bought a custom surfboard made by HIB and tons of accessories and clothing. The owners Drew and Kevin are two of the nicest, down to earth guys, I have met. They are always open when you need them. Every time I go to down to Hatteras, I make a stop into the shop to pick up surf items and get the scoop on the best places to surf, eat and hang out. They recently tore down and rebuilt a newer and bigger shop and I can't wait to see it in person. The merchandise is always up to date with the radist gear and the staff members are super cool. What can I say about HIB??? Only good things! I love shopping here, I always find something that I have to have. I recently moved to San Diego and find it incredible that I cant find a little place like HIB. Drew is always super kind and will help you with anything that he can. There is always a rack outside with sales, and inside the prices are very reasonable. Hatteras Island Boardsports is a great shop that is locally owned. Our family has been coming to Avon for the last 25-years. As the family grew and the kids got more into water sports, Hatteras Island Boardsports became our favorite shop. HIB is located across the street from the pier in Avon and has everything you need from skim boards to windsurfing gear (HIB shares the shop with WIND NC and both are great). Over the years, we have purchased all of our boogie boards and surfboards. The owners name is Kevin and he is a great guy. My kids love the summer and surf clothing, rash guards and swim suits. read more

Totally worth swinging by. I've become a regular! The guys are super helpful with anything you need, they have super cute clothes and a great stock to choose from. Service was fantastic and I loved this place. The staff was friendly and willing to spend a great deal of time with the customer explaining their products. When I went in I was directed to the best beach to go to and what the waves were like. They had a great selection of women's clothing and when I asked to help picking out a shirt for my husband the staff spent time helping me out. I'm coming back here every year I'm in Avon. read more

Kevin's shop is shared by Wind NC, which is also a fantastic shop. Both are imperatives if you are looking for not just great quality, but also helpful, friendly staff. I'm a complete beginner surfer and I never feel intimidated here. I've bought two surfboards here (one for myself and one for my son). We love them. They are always helpful in providing tips, telling you where to go to surf according to your ability. Also, their clothing selection is by far the best on the outer banks. Don't pass up this shop! read more
