I was specifically in the mood for Chicharrones and decided to try a restaurant I've driven by countless times, Havana Cafe. I ordered the Chicharrones (of course) and the Pollo Guisado with white rice, black beans and it came along with the sweet plantains as well. All of the food was really good and the Chicharrones ... literally the BEST I've had despite them being served in larger chunks which I at first was skeptical about lol but would literally come back just for them. The portion was also enough for two people to share so I'll be having the leftovers for lunch. I'm glad I decided to finally try them. read more

My parents made a trip to visit us in NY. Before arriving they asked if we wanted anything. I decided to go with the Ropa Viejo Platter with White Rice & Black Beans. I initially wanted yellow rice with black beans but they didn't have yellow rice that day. I also ordered two Beef Empanadas. My mom gave me her a container of her oxtail gravy but I didn't need it. The platter was packed to the brim. The Ropa Vieja paired well with the white rice and black beans. The meat was tender while the rice and beans were seasoned well. The food was so flavorful. I've been coming here consistently since I moved in the area two years ago. It's not super cheap but the quality and the portions are so worth it. I'm pescatarian and there are great options :) My favorites include the egg & cheese breakfast sandwich, fried fish with beans, plantains and rice, the pizza empanada is amazing and the hava mocha espresso shake. The food was good. I won't say it was great... but tasty. I ordered the Cubano sandwich and some beef empanadas. The bread was long and thin, as opposed to shorter and wider. I've had different people tell me each style is the correct way of doing it, but who knows. Bread was good. The ham was tasty, I felt like the pork was a bit dry. It needed a bit more flavor to it. Still overall, a good sandwich, The beef empanadas were very tasty. As one who makes Mexican food at home, I can understand how they made theirs. From what I can tel, it was ground beef with a little bit of onion and either green pepper or maybe jalapeños... there was so little to it, it's tough to tell. And then some chili powder, cumin, garlic... maybe paprika... salt & pepper. And there you have it. It was deep fried, because the shell was toasty all over it. I could easily have a few of those by themselves. Service was good. I placed a to-go order so service was limited in nature, but the young lady was pleasant. Overall ambiance was a simple sandwich shop that would crank out some good East Coast Cuban food. I would go there to try more of the menu over time, if you like Cuban food. read more

This is the Cuban sandwich which consists of season pork roast, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard all placed over Cuban bread. I also had to get an all time fav the guava and cheese puff pastry. Made with Guava past and cream cheese makes the perfect Latin combo! So toasty and tender and most importantly so flavorful, this sandwich is a must try and you have to finish it off with a sweet treat like the guava and cheese puff pastry. This is one of my local go-to's when I want good comfort food. I stopped in last night and was especially impressed with the presentation. I usually pick a platter combo from the numerous choices at the hot table: a meat or chicken dish, white or yellow rice, red or black beans, maduros and/or yucca with garlic and onion. Staff is consistently friendly and very attentive at this neighborhood mom and pop corner spot, nice and quiet, and always a steady stream of customers. I've had the best made to order mofongo, and their pork tamales are always moist and flavorful. Great coffee! This time I had pernil and asked for some crispy pork skin and was given more than I expected, accompanied with rice, black beans and a generous 4 pieces of maduros. I was really disappointed with the entire meal. The oxtails was all fat and no meat. The juices spilled all in the bag and you can imagine what that cleanup was like. My Cuban sandwich was missing from my order. The rice was undercooked and the tilapia was just it good. The only decent items were the empanadas. read more

My go-to lunch: Chicken Fricassee, Yellow Rice, and Maduros (sweet fried plantains). Best chicken I've ever tasted. I've tried a few other menu items as well: ribs, oxtail, picadillo, the Cuban and Medianoche sandwiches (I love a sweeter bread, so the Medianoche is my preference between the two), papa rellena, and croquettes which are the perfect snack to pair with their fresh coffee. I stopped in here after dropping my BMW off across the street for service. The place looked really small from the outside, but it was actually pretty big once you walk in. The girl at the front was nice and immediately greeted me and took my order. I decided on a coffee with a Cuban sandwich, and both were delicious. The coffee was strong, which is just how I like it. The Cuban sandwich was flaky on the outside and had the perfect portion of bread, meat, pickles & cheese. I would have given them 5 stars, but I uncomfortable while eating because it seems they don't have air conditioner here. By far one of the worst Cuban places Iv ate I can't believe their name is Havana and I'm a Cuban place lover! Looks like a hole in the wall on the outside but appearances can be deceptive. Havana actually has lots of seating in their casual establishment. I came on a rainy weekday with a coworker to try their lunch menu. We had to find meter street parking - they do have a couple of spots next to the restaurant but very limited (about 2-3) and you would have to back out into busy Bloomfield Ave anyway, so not the greatest parking option. The staff was friendly and nice. We tried beef and chicken dishes - lots of rice and beans. The meats were decent, a little dry and not the best Cuban food I have had, but not bad either. Had a really nice little breakfast here but gee whiz, it cost $20 for 2 people, just about double what we thought we'd spend. Not all of the food choices are pricey, so next time I'll pay closer attention. Place is comfortable and cheerful. The wifi works great. Located in a high traffic area with no parking adjacent to the restaurant but I found a good spot a couple blocks away - an easy and enjoyable walk. I really had high hopes for Havana Cafe. My birthday was yesterday and I was in the mood for Cuban takeout. I called in advance to confirm they were open for business. I ordered the Monday special which is shredded beef with rice & beans, and sweet plantain. I got to the location for pick up and was greeted by one of the employees. She could've been nicer and more appreciative. During this time customer service keeps good people connected. Anyway I paid and went home. I was sadden by the chewy beef, dry rice, and semi hard sweet plantains. Nevertheless, they may get another shot. Hopefully I'll be back with an updated review! read more
