He told me since it was such a small job he would have to charge me $1,000 to make it worth his while and that he would work me in in between jobs. A week went by and he never followed up to confirm anything. Fast forward a few weeks and he tells me he is able to get the trees but the price is now $1,700. The justification was that the job was going to take a full day and he couldn't tackle any other projects that day, so the price had to reflect that. We met at $1,600. The morning of the install he calls to inform me that the original nursery sold the trees to someone else and that he found them elsewhere but not all in the same size. So if we wanted these exact trees it would be an extra $100 since one of them was larger than the other two. Not ideal, but we agreed. The job was simple. Dig out and edge a mulch bed and install 3 trees 3 feet apart to create a privacy wall against the fence. Apparently this wasn't clear when I explained it because the trees were spaced about 5 feet apart when I came out to check on the project. They then had to be dug up and moved, which was inconvenient for them since they were rushing to get to their next job. Even with the misunderstanding and essentially redoing the job twice over, Alex and his two-man crew were here less than two hours. Not a full day job at all, just a money grab for Alex, who is unethical and dishonest. Alex's team did not even dig a proper mulch bed, they simply pulled the grass away with a shovel. And they left our yard a complete mess -- mounds of wet clay, roots and grass inside the "bed," and the grass outside of the bed trampled. I had to buy top soil for the trees and more gravel to frame in the bed. After adding mulch myself it looks much better than the pictures, but the pictures are how they left the job. I complained to Alex about the "bed" and he came back four hours later to edge a clean line, but that's all it is, a line. We hired MetroGreenscape for the landscaping in our front yard and they are significantly better at their craft. They also provided plant care instructions, water schedules by season, and warranty information for their work. On the latter, Alex told me that the plants were covered should something go wrong but that we would be responsible for the labor. I have reached out to Alex four times to get the warranty information and he has completely ignored me, I suspect because he knows the trees were not properly installed and may not survive. Alex is fine though -- he got his money and is on to the next job. Alex will tell you that the bed was "crispy clean" before the trees had to be moved, that in digging new holes they encountered a large log that had to be removed from the area. However, if they actually took the time to dig a proper bed in the first place, that log would have been discovered before they brought the trees into the area. There really isn't a narrative that justifies the end product. Just look at the pictures and ask yourself if Alex's work reflects the $1,700 price tag.

I wanted to finish the plantings, so I suggested we look at other ideas. We went back and forth many times, he suggesting some, me saying no, and vice versa. Then I began to get complaints--things like, "I'm running out of ideas", or my favorite "This is taking up more time than my $10,000 and $20,000 jobs I have scheduled, and I can't make any money." As the home owner, I have the right to have a garden that I will enjoy, so who wants to hear complaints from someone that you hire? We eventually finalized everything, and set a date. His crew was great! Friendly, knowledgeable, and did a great job--garden looks great. They solved my drainage problem, so I no longer had the threat of water destroying my plants. That was the initial plantings. The crew that came in to finish the 2nd set of plants wasn't so hot. They neglected to put down mulch, and living in the South, you have to have it, so I had to buy it myself and spread it. I asked them about it, and they said Nick said not to--mystery to me. This is not the cheapest landscaping company in Charlotte NC, but they had such grand reviews, I decided to go with them. I'm hoping I can make my garden grow, as I've not had luck in the past, but I'm not even going to bother asking for replacements if some of them die, as the 1-year warranty is iron clad with watering requirements, pest control, soil issues, etc.

One of the days they were scheduled to come I had to text them the day before to check because it had rained and I didn't get a response back til 8am the morning of the appointment saying it had been rained out from the day prior. After we finally got a date, I didn't hear the day before what time I should expect the crew. I texted that morning asking and got told 30 minutes before they showed up. The crew was very polite any time we had to engage while they were on site. They made sure to ask me where exactly the sod was going. I asked if they could remove a small stump where the sod was going and if they couldn't I would remove it. They kindly said they could. Once going to pay my invoice I noticed they had a charge of $350 for debris removal but no debris were removed and I was never asked if I wanted them to take the debris which I would have said no. I ended up sharing the camera recording that showed nothing was removed! This ended up getting removed as they said there was confusion and that taking away the pallets from the soil & sod from the site was not considered debris. The sod looked great post laying down however two days later when we went to install the sprinkler system we were stunned to see what was underneath. I had been charged $400 for top soil, if you look at the pictures there is hardly any top soil under the sod. I was told they would prep the ground but yet you see rocks, sticks, etc so the ground was not moved though it's claimed to have been raked. The backyard is that tough clay like dirt so it needs to be roughed and prepped to ensure its growth. It's apparent it was not. When sharing the videos and photos with the company asking for resolution or partial refund. I got told that this was up to their standard, they did the proper prep and there was $400 worth of top soil there. I also got told they already gave me a discount by removing the debris charge!! Though there were not debris removed and were now saying the pallets did count as removal. No partial refund or even correction of the work they did. I unfortunately will not be using them again though I originally had considered using them for my front lawn later in the year.

They did some grading and put down low pressure low pressure sprinklers heads and years later I see how shoddy the job was. Their ability to grade and level out are elementary at best. There so many thoughtful touches, a pathway for my dads wheelchair, mulch barriers from my neighbors wild flowers, storage for our kayaks. The transformation was huge, it's like a whole new house. Third job: (Last fall) paid for manual pulling/removal of Bermuda grass from garden beds, plus weed control and mulch. Took a bit of chasing around to get them to actually get it on the books, and then when they did come they just buzzed everything with a string trimmed and sprayed weed killer over that. We agreed to still pay the full price on the condition that Gairy would send a team out in the spring once the Bermuda woke up and inevitably came through the mulch since it wasn't removed. He agreed, and we left it at that. Flash forward to this year and has completely ghosted us and been non-responsive. Even tried asking about having a bunch of other services added so that it wouldn't be a totally free trip, but still No luck. We finally gave up on any hope of getting the promised services, hired Mr. Outdoor Living, dropped like $4K on services with them instead and will be sticking with them next year when we do a sprinkler system and stone retaining walls.
