Bill got offended again and claims our complaints are invalid. Dude. This is gross. Take accountability. I'm filing a legit complaint theblicensing board with all of my pictures and text messages and documentation of any other charges I may incur to fix this. A customer shouldn't be made to feel guilty for bringing faults of your crew to light- incredibly bad business. My advise to anyone considering this company: shop around and review the one star reviews on here. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Mr. Outdoor Living on several projects. They built a beautiful walkway and a small front yard patio for us, and replaced our existing mess of a yard with Bermuda sod. We had several estimates for these projects before choosing who we wanted to work with. Not only were the estimates from Mr. Outdoor Living reasonable, but they also provided suggestions we had not considered, including pointing out a couple of areas that needed drainage solutions. Other vendors did not even consider the drainage so we appreciated the consideration of how to avoid standing water situations. The end result is beautiful. We would 100% hire Mr. Outdoor Living again and have recommended them to our neighbors, many of whom have stopped by to ask who installed our new patio and sod! read more

We had a really frustrating experience with Mr. Outdoor Living. After paying our initial deposit and starting the design, it became clear that we wouldn't be the best fit to work together. We wanted help with choosing plants that fit a specific aesthetic with an agreed upon design/arrangement before starting work. However, they made it clear that they prefer to work a bit more independently, leaving design to their discretion as the experts. They also didn't seem to have the expertise needed to select plants outside of their typical selection and did not have any guarantee on the planting (most other companies offer a 1 year guarantee on plant health). I do acknowledge that being able to design a planting scheme to fit a specific aesthetic is an extended skillset, so it seemed like we simply weren't the best fit to work together. However, when we tried to cancel the job, the communication was very unprofessional. When they did finally refund us, they held part of our deposit as a "design and project coordination fee". However, we never received a design, asked to put the project on hold the SAME day we gave them our deposit, and fully cancelled the following day. It wasn't until I left negative reviews and filed a complaint with the BBB that we received our full refund. I have never left a negative review for a business before and it was my absolute last resort. Since they did finally return our full deposit, I'm upgrading my review to two stars, but I am still choosing to leave my experience here since this situation was handled so poorly and became personally upsetting. I do wish I had seen a review like this to warn me before starting work with this company. I can see they have many happy customers and do beautiful work for others, so my main recommendation would be to make sure you have a very clear design plan, have fully agreed on all aspects of the project and are offered a warranty on the work before any exchange of money is made. read more

Absolutely the worst company I ever worked with. I have never had a company/owners admit that the work wasn't done as planned but yet not actually do anything about it. We spent weeks pleading with them to come fix simple issues and got nothing except promises that they'd "take care of us". In fact, Winston (who pointed out all the issues and things that needed fixing) simply wished us luck with our drainage issues after we tried to get them fixed. That led us to reaching out to his father (the owner) to try and get them to come fix the issues Winston himself found. They were extremely appreciative that we paid them in full even though the work wasn't finished and told us they'd take care of it. After weeks of requesting fixes and being promised that they'd come fix the issues, we've now gone 3+ weeks without hearing a peep. They have no interest in honoring their warranty. The value of their projects isn't worth anything if it's not done correctly and no one will fix the problems. By not coming back to fix relatively simple issues, they screwed themselves out of numerous other projects we had planned. Simply the worst experience I've ever had. I highly recommend you look elsewhere and if you're tempted to hire them by their upbeat meetings to provide you an estimate, know that they don't actually do the work or even come on scene. They send a crew with some instructions then come after it's completed to see if you're happy. They don't oversee anything. You may think you're getting Winston and the family doing the work/overseeing it all, but you don't. What you will get is a bunch of empty promises and absolutely no follow through. read more

We used Mr. Outdoor living for a front yard overhaul and could not be more happy with our decision. From my initial outreach, I knew I was dealing with a local, honest, and talented company who wanted to help me make my front yard beautiful. Mr. Outdoor living was incredibly responsive and was able to come out to quote our work within a week of our initial request for a quote - Luke was the project manager who came out and worked with us through project end and it was a seamless process. He was able to provide a detailed quote the day he came out to the job, and unlike some other quote processes I dealt with, Luke listened to my vision for the entire project and provided and helped me scope the project to cover everything I wanted to do at a fair price point. No pressure selling, just trying to help me get my yard to where i wanted it to be. The work consisted of tear out work, regrading, sod install, and planting. Every step of the way the project was done on time, as promised, and exceeded our expectations. Luke came out personally to check on the project on the tear out date, the install date, and afterwards to do a walkthrough of the work. We've had Mr. Outdoor Living perform two services. 1) They fixed a drainage problem on the side of my house. He knew exactly what to do and put in the right solution the FIRST time. We watched a neighbor have a different company fail miserably at resolving their issue. Mr. Outdoor Living turned our swamp into solid grass and dirt that can handle any amount of rain. Our lawn service can now use the riding mower vs. push since the ground is solid. It's made a world of difference. 2) They re-did our front and back beds. The builder's bushes left something to be desired. Now, we have beautiful shrubbery with curbing. It's upgraded the appearance of the front of our house. We've already had one neighbor hire Billy to copy us... we raised the bar on landscaping :) We can't wait to use them again. read more

The results do not match the sales pitch. Bill talks a big game during the sale about how important quality is, but the results here are amateur-grade at best. You might expect that someone who holds quality to be so important would want to show up at the jobsite before, during, or after the work to make sure it's done right. Not so. Bill relies on texts from his crew of day laborers to manage the job. You can see where this is heading. The installation and assembly work is so sloppy that not a single part of this install looks right. Here are some examples: - The concrete/grout work is extremely rough and uneven. Some gaps are 1/2", others nearby are three times that. The stones are tan, but they used grey material to fill the spaces so the sloppy install is very obvious. They had a hard time with one area, so they seem to have just put more and more filler into the space. It's all over the stones, and the seam itself is at least an inch and a half of sloppily placed material. Amateur-grade work at best. - The dining table area of the outdoor kitchen is made with two stones, but the seam down the middle is very uneven. As in, about ¼" drop from one to the next. So when you're sitting there having dinner the plate will be flopping back and forth. - The backspash side is fairly long, and they used three stone segments to fill the space. Makes sense, but the center one is very obviously uneven and sticks way out. Adding to that, the gaps on both sides of it are enormous and sloppy. - The built-in grill now has big open gaps on the sides. This is because the crew threw away the stainless steel trim panels that close the space up to keep out weather/dirt/wasps/etc. Bill's solution here was to send his son over. A nice guy whose instructions must be to say everything looks fine and ask for a check at the end of every sentence. Bill went from talking about being a stickler for quality to literally saying (texting of course), and I quote, "Countertops with natural stone is not easy." Yes, of course that's true. That's why I attempted to hire professionals who promised a high quality installation. That's not what was delivered by a long shot. All this to say, there are so many better contractors out there. I wish I had gone with someone else. Don't give this guy your project or your money. The pitch does not match the actions at all, and the quality of the result is frankly embarrassing. read more

Our back yard is pretty large and while my fiance and I have done what we can to make it livable, we reached a point in the project where we realized we needed a professional to make our dreams a reality. I love our backyard because it is shaded, but we wanted a space that would help prevent erosion and a patio for entertaining. There were also some cosmetic changes we wanted in the front yard. Mr Outdoor living and his team were able to come out assess the space and gave us a plan. By the time they were scheduled to come, we had had some pretty bad rainstorms change the drainage creeks we originally wanted and asked them to help make it work and change the direction of one of the creek beds we wanted. They were not only able to redirect one of the creek beds, but also made it so it followed a different path around our new patio space. My fiance loves video games and really wanted a trifoce design in the center and they made it happen. His team is very nice and helpful. They would answer any question I had too. Last year Mr Outdoor Living came and we had him add a patio to a mud pit we had off our deck and the brick they got matches our existing brick patio (but newer looking). So when we were ready to ask for help on a new patio, I was glad that we already knew who to reach out to. My fiance and I have already started planting around our new patio and creek beds to make it ours. But having his help to get us started was amazing. We needed a walkway to our new accessory dwelling unit in the backyard, but we weren't sure if we wanted simple stepping stones or a full paver walkway so Bill came out to access the project and showed us examples of work he had done of various walkways and provided a quote for two different options. We also were trying to get it done before the holidays and he was willing to work with us to get the project done quickly. Somehow, his crew came and knocked out the project in one day and it looks perfect. I wish the historic district was as efficient so we could have moved in much earlier... I never leave bad reviews ... but I am going to make an exception this time as I feel that I have been "RIPPED OFF" by this company and I am having to re-do all the work that they started because the work (project) was poorly sized, poorly managed, poorly implemented and never completed to my satisfaction. Let me start from the beginning..... I purchased lake front property on Lake Wylie - it is a sloped lot and I quickly realized I had drainage problems with water run off during heavy rains - what I call gully washers. Bill came to my home and I showed him the severe drainage problem that I was having - I gave him pictures and a video I took from a heavy spring storm - he took a look and told me he could guarantee that he could fix my problem. He quickly came up with a $10,000 estimate to address my drainage problems - my wife and I both felt this was a lot of money - we discussed it and reached the decision that if the final product completely fixed our problem it would be a good investment and we could relax during periods of heavy rain and not worry about pooling water and debris and water pouring on our property. The scheduled day arrived and I became concerned as Bill had not arrived to start the work. I called Bill about when he was going to arrive to work on my project. That is when he informed me that he was working on another job and was sending over a subcontractor to do the work and that he would not be here to be part of my project or supervise and manage the project or the subcontractor. I was very concerned that he would not be at my property for the project - he told me not to worry it would be done properly. The materials arrived and it became apparent immediately that Bill had not properly sized this project: 1.The project should have been sized for at least a week of work - he only planned and paid the subcontractor for a day. 2.A couple of pallets of River Stone , one small roll of landscape fabric, and three drainage pipes and grids was all that was delivered from the materials provider. 3.The subcontractor had an older trenching machine which broke down and was out of service for half the day. They had no front in loader and moved the stone by hand and tried to trench with shovels due to the break down. 4.It became apparent that there was not enough material (River Stone) to create robust drainage fields (dry river beds) ... they ran out of material very quickly. 5. Bill told me he could order more material but it would cost me an additional $2000 - I protested and he reluctantly said he would have additional material sent but it would have to be the next day. 6.Well the next day arrived and the subcontractor did come back - he brought no trenching machine and a very small amount of additional material (River Rock). Not nearly enough to complete the project to my satisfaction. 7. Additionally the drainage field (dry river bed) that was installed above my pool was not sloped properly - water does not run uphill - I tried to talk to the subcontractor about my concerns but he could not understand what I was trying to tell him. Bill later told me he had ask the sub to correct the slope of the drainage field - but this was never done. We had a heavy rain storm the next two days and the drainage field did not flow properly and water pooled and ran down into my pool. The next day Bill sent his son out who used a shovel to dig to enlarge a muddy ditch that is still was not sloped properly and the water does not drain as it should. Now I have this muddy mess above my pool that was suppose to be a very attractive and very functional dry river bed to take the water away from my pool. This muddy mess is what Bill called his final product. 8.Additionally the additional drain fields (dry river beds) were sized way too small and the material - landscape fabric and river stone created a very thin and under performing drainage ditch. The first heavy rain after the install resulted in the drainages ditches overflowing and pushing rocks and debris all over my yard and property. 9.This is how Bill left the project and called it complete. I called him trying to get him to fix all the problems and stand by his final product. He refused ... he got very ugly with me and told me he was done and for me not to call him again. I realized that if you are praising him he seems nice - but if you bring up problems he is a hot head who will immediately get angry and give you an extremely hard time. 10.I am now left with a mess on my lakefront property that I am having to completely re-do. There is not a single element of this install that I am satisfied with. 11.Be warned this man will not stand behind his work or the work of the subcontractors he hires and as in my case will not even be on the job site when the work is being done by his subcontractors as he schedules multiple jobs for the same period of time and is difficult or even impossible to reach if you have problems. Our real estate agent suggested Bill at Mr. Outdoor, the bid we received was reasonable and in our budget so we decided to go with them and we could not be more pleased. The work is top notch, it looks great and added to our "curb appeal" and, most importantly, the drain works as it should (we're particularly happy we had it installed with all these storms having come through.) Additionally, when I asked Bill for more communication during the process he absolutely gave me what I needed, keeping me up to date, in some cases by the minute, on the entire process. When I was searching for someone who can fix my irrigation system I did find this company with lots of great reviews. The owner got in contact we me the same day and all did sound perfect. I did confirm with him via text. The first thing they asked for was to pay $175 before even giving me a time or date when they will come to fix the system. As they had good reviews I did send the money the same day. Starting from this day I was asking when we can meet at my house to have a look at what needs to be done as I had some sprinkler heads to move to a different position. It took 2 more days until I got confirmation that they will come by Monday, with no specific time. After I reached out Monday morning to ask for a time, they kept telling me they will come by later. So I waited. I did take the full day off of work. I told the owner on the phone before I paid that I needed to show them in person what the issues are. After several texts saying they will come later that day, they suddenly cancelled with no explanation and rescheduled for the day after. In response I asked for a refund of the $175 as they did not show up. They told me they will not refund any payment and instead of an apology, they got upset with me. After many messages going back and forth I still agreed that they come by the next day and do the work as I had already paid. The work was done after one hour and they charged me $960 in addition to the $175 = $1135 for replacing 2 sprinkler heads and parts of a hose. No one reached out checking in after I paid again. Overall: Really disappointing to have experienced such a bad customer service and lack of communication after sending a non-refundable down payment. read more

With the nice weather may be time to enjoy your yard. If you have any yard project, I do not recommend Mr. Outdoor Living. Bill is very unprofessional, he sold us the project and then he didn't order enough material, the project had an incomplete look and it definitely was not going (boulder retiming wall for river bank open drain) all the way to where we had discussed at first. When I told him that his response was "it' going to end there, that's all the material I ordered, if you want more you have to pay for the extra material". After some hours of back and forth I ended up paying more because I did t want the incomplete look, but he "game me a discount" (about 20% of the "upgrade" that was supposed to be done from the begin anyway). Then his crew broke 4 sprinkler heads and the pvc of the irrigation system in like 3 spots. And he refused to fix it, his solution was to sent "his irrigation crew" but he was going to charge me $175 for consultation (5that he offered to credit back if we "hired them") and his ultimate solution was to offer me a "discount" to fix what his crew broke. After some texting back and forth about his issue he just said to email him to his warranty email for his company because we were not coming to an agreement via text, and of course he never replied the email. I hired someone else to fix the irrigation. System. Be aware of this company, super unprofessional and he won't take responsibility if his crew brakes something. read more

My husband and I had a terrible experience with Mr. Outdoor Living! They told us the work was scheduled for Thursday, 8/22/2024. I asked for a window of time, am or pm, to get an idea how to request time off from work. They told me am. I requested time off in the am on Thursday. Around 11:30 am on Thursday no one showed up, so I called them and they said they were running behind and their Project Manager, Winston, would contact me. Winston called me and said he would be there at 3 pm to do the work. I asked if the work could be completed on Thursday since, by then, I had to take the entire day off from work and couldn't take another day off from work. Winston said "yes, we are picking up the supplies". By 4 pm no one showed up. Thereafter, I received a call from Winston saying traffic was heavy and they didn't have the supplies. He said not often do they have to pick up a ton of river rocks. And he further asked me if I had the divider needed for the job. At this point I got the impression that my job was too small and it was a bother to him. He asked if he could come the following day, Friday to do the work. I agreed, since I wanted to get the work done. Now, my husband had to take time off from work on Friday. Winston said my husband or i did not have to take time off from work, we could just lock our dog up in the house (my husband and I usually leave for work at 6:30 am and return home at 5:30 pm). If you have animals you will know this is animal cruelty! Our dog usually roams the yard during the day. I asked Winston what time he could be there on Friday. He responded "8:30 am". Friday morning at 8:30 am, no one showed up. At 9:30 am I called the office and asked for Bill or Luke to give me a call. I received a text message "can't talk now, Luke or Winston will call you". Winston called, he said his crew was trying to find the supplies and would be at our home in 50 minutes. Once again, I get a lot of talk back from him about the supplies. My impression of this company is they are very disorganized! They should not schedule a job without having the materials to do the job! They should show up when they give their customers a date and time to do the work. Not to mention, the great aggravation and inconvenience they cause to customers. Hired Mr. Outdoor Living based on all the positive reviews. Wanted Tennessee River Rock for both sides of house due to erosion. Requested rock like our next-door neighbor's so that it would appear to be seamless. We were told, "Not a problem." Evening before work was to begin, we were informed that they believed that they had underestimated the amount of rock needed. The day after they completed the work, they told us that we owed an additional $1000 for the rock. They included a "discount" of $250. Also, the rock provided was not at all like our neighbor's rock, so it is far from seamless. When we finally spoke with them, we expressed our dissatisfaction with the rock and they told us that if we power washed it, it should look like our neighbor's rock. We did that and it still does not look at all similar. Spoke with owner as to why we were not paying the additional fee and told him about the rock. He spoke more at us than to us. We requested that someone come down to look at why we were dissatisfied and were informed that no one was "going to come all the way down there." Gave them $500 and said that was all that we were going to pay for the additional rock. They gave us a $500 landscape credit that will never expire. Will not be using it as we will never contact them again. read more

Incomplete work and running off with down payment in hand.....that pretty much says it all. There's too many similar stories I missed before with poor and incomplete work and refusals to return deposits when he is the one canceling jobs. I made contact with Mr. Outdoor living in June of 2023. Bill Goldstein sent me 2 text messages requesting a meeting time. He did not mention anything about charging fees. I told him I needed to pause the project. I texted him in August, letting him know I was ready to get an estimate. After I was asking to change the appointment time, he "suddenly " had a cancellation fee to charge me and suddenly had a design fee to charge me. This is a deceptive business practice. He came to my home and at first I thought maybe he would do a good job. I sent him a deposit. Then, I got a bad feeling and started doing more research about this company. I was shocked to see several BBB complaints against the company and other complaints posted online. I started to realize this company is not trustworthy. I cancelled the job within the three days, per legal requirements. Then he said he would charge me for materials ordered and contact with HOA. However, he knew not to order anything because he knew the HOA would have to approve the project before he would order anything. I contacted the HOA and they verified they had not heard from Bill Goldstein nor Mr. Outdoor Living. So basically, he lied. That's what I can tell you. He lies, they lie. These people lied to Yelp and told them I was not their customer . I will attach a text message that proves their lies. read more
