Last night my daughter and I ordered some dinner from Hawaii Kitchen. You really cannot ever expect takeout to look like eat-in, and this was the case with last night's dinner. The order came in three plastic containers and the food was "stuffed" into those containers. When we took the food out of the containers it was all squashed and wasn't too visually attractive. Now to the important stuff -- the food. It was hard for me to believe this was sushi. For years I've been eating sushi from Japanese restaurants here in the states. One of these restaurants is in New Jersey near Pennsauken and I would rate the food amazing and excellent. I don't go there often but when I originally found it I went there as many times as I could -- I was living in Blackwood at the time. I had the following menu items at for takeout from the Hawaii Kitchen. Chicken tempura roll Cucumber roll California roll Seaweed Salad My daughter's order was similar to my order although not the same. She ate about three bites, and didn't eat the rest. Into the garbage it went. My order was soggy -- a state I never find appetizing, and seemed too moist. Nevertheless I wanted to make sure what I was tasting was true and I so wanted to enjoy the food. I don't think any of the rolls was remarkable and certainly would not make me return to the restaurant. Although the quality and taste might be better in the restaurant, I would consider trying it again. The rolls were what I would call bland. The only item with a taste was the seaweed salad and that was because it did have some taste from the sesame seeds and light heat. As I was eating I was asking myself the question, was this a Hawaiian style sushi? Another aspect of the food was that it was pretty bland. The tempura had some texture and taste, but it too was lackluster. I would rate the food with a single star and that would definitely represent a NO-GO in my book. I remember reading an article towards the end of 2016 about upcoming food trends for the new year. In 2017, it stated, poke (poh-KAY) bowls would be all the rage. In typical Reading, PA fashion, poke bowls have finally arrived - in 2018. Seemingly behind the curve in any and all gastronomic trends, the raw fish salad with Hawaiian origins can now be obtained on the quaint Penn Avenue strip in the heart of West Reading. So let's begin with the star of the show - the poke bowls themselves. There are a bunch of pre-built bowl concoctions, but I found it's best to go "Chipotle style" and create your own bowl for maximum artistic license (and value). This option allows you to pay a set price for your choice of rice and either two ($10.95) or three ($13.95) proteins plus up to an additional 20 toppings at no extra charge. So go nuts with avocado, edamame, spicy mayo, seaweed salad, kani, bonito flakes, corn, mango, masago, wonton crisps ... the list goes on. The bowls are absolutely the way to go here. Anyone looking for a sushi burrito should look elsewhere. A few miles down the road sushi burritos of equal quality go for about $7.99, compared to $10.95+ here. One glaring omission is wasabi. I want the option of adding a huge glob to my poke bowl or have a side come with my sushi burrito. I love slathering that tear-jerking, sinus-clearing green goo on any raw fish related food item. "Where do you go, my lovely (wasabi)?" - No Mercy It should totally be one of the 20+ items you can add on. Or it should come by default with every order. Other than that teeny, tiny grievance, this place is absolutely a breath of fresh air to the area. Solid food and service. This is a fairly new establishment located on a busy block in West Reading. We had to park a little over a block away on the block behind it. It was around noon, during the lunch rush. The restaurant is long and skinny so we were lucky to snag a table. We ordered at the counter. The food came out pretty fast--we both got the Honolulu burrito. It was good but you couldn't taste the spicy tuna very well. The best part was the fried sweet potato--I wish there was more of it! This relaxing and adorable spot in the middle of the block offers fresh healthy food. We always get the same thing, the sesame bowl and the veggie sushi burrito. The bowl is so flavorful with mango, seaweed salad, avocado, purple rice, sesame seeds, and tofu -- I add extra greens. The burrito is like a giant sushi roll. We never have leftovers. You can make up your own bowl, but the sesame bowl has everything I love; sometimes I just crave it. You can BYOB, and the owner Cindy always plays chill music. She remembers your name and what you like. Whether this or that is authentic makes no difference to me since nothing is really authentic once you think about it. On both occasions upon entering the restaurant the server/ manager/ owner was preoccupied in the back and did not greet me with a warm welcome. Never again. I ordered online and paid the almost $4 convenience fee to place an order online for pick up ASAP hoping for the 2 bowls I ordered to be ready when I got there. Online order stated to give 20-25 minutes until pick up. Arrived right at 25 minutes and only one other person at the counter to pick up... he was also waiting on food. At 30 minutes, I was finally helped and none of my food was ready. She showed me her tablet to confirm it was my order. But because I already paid, I patiently waited for another 25, almost 30 minutes for her to make my food. Finally got it, no apology for the delay and when I asked for chopsticks, she hesitated. Entering this restaurant was not safe. No handicap entrance...3 steps and then up a slanted "ramp". This place also has no parking and I was forced to park very far away. When returning back to my car, I was hounded down and followed by some stranger asking for money... he did the same to the people behind me. The area did not feel safe, I was glad it was still daytime. Got home to tiny portions of everything, just pinches of toppings not full scoops like other poke places in the area. There was barely any shrimp or mango in my roll, it was over-cooked, the breading was extremely hard (inedible), the shrimp wasn't deveined, and the shrimp was like hard rubber. So incredibly disappointing for the price I paid! When I called to complain I was not offended a new roll or the money back, I was only offered a $5 credit towards my next purchase. I post this review after my third visit. Truth be told- I wanted this place to be excellent, which is why I tried it three times (left disappointed on each attempt). I'll be brief: portions are small for the price; quality of protein and rice was lacking; they advertise fresh/raw ahi, but you are served peppered/seared tuna by default (I found out on the 2nd try you have to specifically ask for freshly cut tuna if you expect it to be uncooked). The veggies seemed fresh and the sauce was ok, for the most part. Their optional ingredients were plentiful too (which was nice). Service was quick, but friendly turned to ticked-off, when I had to ask for fresh/raw tuna. It seemed to be a reoccurring pain point from the young lady's reaction, behind the counter (which came off as "I'm told to do it this way, despite wanting to please the customer"). When I arrived I was greeted with a smile. My order wasn't ready, although it had been 30 minutes. However my wait was acknowledged and she apologized. She forgot to put in my musubi and I could not wait because I needed to get to work, I was given a coupon for a return visit. The smoothie was good, however it was more of a iced juice drink. I drank all of the juice and there was a ton of ice left behind. The flavors were good though. My bowl was delicious. It contained: brown rice, chicken, tofu, onion, edamame, pineapple, eel sauce, cucumber, mango, seaweed salad, rice seasoning, and wonton crisps. It was tasty and fresh. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Got a spicy tuna burrito last week. Everything was fresh and high quality. It was AMAZING. I was in love, so I ordered another today. What I received doesn't even deserve to be called sub-par. It was worse, far worse. The price was higher than on the website, fine. When I got home, I found that the burrito had LETTUCE in it (which isn't supposed to be in it at all), NO ahi tuna but a low quality, bright orange mush that I was told is their "spicy tuna mix," no sweet potato tempura (which is supposed to be in it), and NO avocado (which is supposed to be in it). I called and had to spend 20+ minutes on the phone with the manager trying to accuse me of ordering a different one last time, then had to drive over there AGAIN (if you know west reading, you know how beyond annoying this is to do at 5pm) with the burrito for confirmation to receive a refund. This is a great spot to get a poke bowl on a warm day. The protein was good (ahi was seared which was different than west coast poke joints) and the extras were very fresh and plentiful. They didn't charge extra for avocado or seaweed salad which is nice. Good selection of drinks and modern comfortable interior. Prices are average for poke bowls. My only suggestion would be to have a board behind the ordering area to list all the options for each 'stage' of the poke bowl so each client doesn't have to pick up a takeout menu.
