    The ample beef lo mein...
    Jenna H.

First time back here after moving out of the area. It use to be pretty decent a dozen years ago. Right after opening the bag we thought we were missing items as there were mostly small containers. The portion sizes were disappointingly small, the beef lo mien came in the box usually used for the white rice side. It was also just greasy with no flavor, even the soy sauce didn't help. The sesame chicken was the best of the meal but was over cooked and tough. The pad Thai was not very good compared to any other I've had, strange vinegar smell, It just wasn't good. I guess the egg rolls were fine though but that bars pretty low. Things are expensive these days and it's frustrating to blow money on subpar disappointing meals. Should've just made anything at home, or went to Wawa across the street.

    Hot and sour soup FTW.

Caddy-corner from Wawa on Lancaster Avenue lies Jade Garden, a Chinese/Japanese restaurant that remains oft overlooked despite being located in the midst of one of Shillington's busiest intersections. This place is by no means fancy. The decor is horribly outdated, and the chairs and tables look straight out of a 70s diner. It's not quite down to the level of folding metal chairs, but it's close. There are booths, thank goodness, so try to grab one of those. Someone please explain to me how when you order soup to-go from Chinese restaurants, it comes in giant containers, but when you order soup for dine-in, it comes out in a tiny tea cup and costs the exact same? I think I'm going to start ordering a to-go order of soup when I sit down and just crack that baby open as soon as it comes out while I'm still waiting for my entree. The soup *is* good, though. Which is why I want more of it! The hot and sour soup is hearty and has nice heat to it. My Chinese comfort food is lo mein, and this place nails it. Large chunks of meat adorn an imposing pile of noodles dotted with green onion, water chestnuts, carrots, and bean sprouts. The balance of soy sauce, garlic, and onion flavor are always key. Many places seem to be just slightly off in this regard. But Jade Garden has the formula down pat. In addition to standard dining room seating, there's a sushi bar towards the back of the restaurant. Lunch can be hectic, as there is only one server on who's responsible for all front of house duties. They play some funky Chinese music here. There are some some classic Asian tunes with the string instruments and stuff, but then the next song could be some thumping modern Chinese pop song by the Asian Backstreet Boys. It's wild.

You can't get it any Fresher~Yummy

The food tasted great, but it does not make up for our poor customer service experience…read more The customer service is awful. I ordered over $40 worth of food for a family of 6. We wanted to try the cheese wonton, so we got an order of 6. I picked up the order, and drove home. When we went to eat the wonton, there were only 4, which is not enough to feed the group of six. We called to let them know that 2 had been missing. The woman apologized and said they'd replace them now or credit for next visit. We told them we were too far and would appreciate the credit. A few minutes later, a gentleman called and told us we were incorrect and it was impossible for there to be 4 wonton because there were 6 wonton in all of the bags they prep. We let them know there were indeed only four due to not having enough for our party of six. Later, ANOTHER woman called to once again say it is impossible for us to have only received 4 wonton and that it may have fallen in the larger bag or even in the car (which is impossible since I tied the bag walking out of the restaurant). It's very sad to lose a customer because they insist that we were incorrect even though we did not have enough for our entire group. The restaurant will not go bankrupt due to a $3 credit and just apologizing for the mistake. The issue was not resolved, and we will not be returning.

Now-a-days sickening sweet entrees, tasteless sauces, & barely a vegetable in sight force me to be a tough critic. Wong's is the best of what remains in the area. While it's not the cuisne of yesteryear, they do a good job on common dishes at a great value. Several visits & never a screw-up on the order. Sesame Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, & Pepper Steak, ordered large, containers were packed to brim, each dish had significant amount of meat. Beef LoMein was not just noodles but decent amount of meat & fair variety of veggies. Egg rolls are big and round, crispy not greasy. Fried dumpling order has 8 large dough pockets with ginger dipping sauce. $60, husband & I ate for 3 days off this order & were given free sodas to boot. Downside, they offer a very limited menu. You won't find Peking Duck, Crab Rangoon, Sweet & Sour Pork or even fortune cookies. But I'll take a few things done well over a large menu poorly executed. Take-out only.

Their spicy dishes aren't really that spicy and the American palate can handle them - that isn't a critique at all. As it stands, I eat here maybe twice a year? But when I do, the experience is magical. Absence, as they say, makes the girth of my waist grow fatter and my physical features exceedingly grotesque. This place has just been so damn deliciously consistent. While Tokyo Hibachi and Zhuang's Garden have seen their quality steadily nosedive, Great Wall tastes just as good now as it did the first time I tried it all those years ago. The hot & sour soup is head and shoulders above any other Chinese restaurants' offerings in a 10 mile radius. Now even though I live a few blocks away, I'd drive, well, 10 miles just to have this soup. It has that perfect gloopy, almost gelatinous consistency. This is a gross comparison, but it's almost mucousy? But super flavorful mucous with secret Chinese spices, like MSG. It's so thick, in fact, that you can use it as an impromptu sauce on white rice or lo mein. Perhaps even mei fun if you're feeling adventurous. Great Wall one of the growing number of Chinese restaurants to move away from those foldable white cardboard containers. You know, the ones that everyone eats out of in movies when they're working late at the office. It's so welcome to see those rectangular plastic containers that stack easier and - perhaps most importantly - are microwave safe. Ever put one of those old containers in the microwave, forgetting they have that thin metal handle and nearly explode your microwave and burn the house down? Yeah, not ideal. I have to emphasize the lo mein, a fan favorite. There's something that sets it apart, and I think it's a hint of sautéed garlic. Also they fry off the noodles a bit more, allowing them to absorb all the flavor from the wok. Nothing's worse than bland lo mein. I can't even order it at some places anymore because it's my favorite and they've nearly ruined it for me. Luckily Great Wall has restored my faith. My other go-tos are the moo goo gai pan (a relatively healthy chicken & vegetable dish) and Szechuan chicken (when I want some extra spice). Parking can be tricky since it's right on Penn Ave. West Reading is pretty much back in full gear, so street parking fills up fast, especially in the evenings. The greedy owners of the parking lot across the street would rather have spots go to waste than let people park there and enjoy the downtown atmosphere (unless they pay premium for a parking pass, that is). Fortunately I have never run into any rudeness from the employees. Perhaps it's due to the Asian connection. Even though I'm super American, sometimes I pretend to struggle with the English language so the staff of Chinese restaurants accept me as their own. Hey, it's a dog eat dog world, and you gotta take any advantage you can get to make it out alive.
