The longtime keeper of the Maui Fish Pond is Uncle Kimokeo, he is a life long Maui resident who has dedicated himself to preserving the Fish Pond for future generations. You see the Fish Pond was built in the 1600's to create a safe haven for the local fish to spawn and grow. Uncle Kimokeo has maintained the Fish Pond walls using stone high atop Haleakala rebuilding the wall stone by stone. Uncle Kimokeo says he's is entrusted to preserve the Pond and the culture. To listen to him explain all the cultural lore was amazing. He took us out on a Double hull Canoe north and basically had the whole boats singing and chanting Hawaiian songs giving thanks for the permission on the water. The Maui Fish Pond takes out groups daily by appointment for a donation 69.00, consider your donation as a write off as the foundation is a non profit corp. these monies supports all of the upkeep, programs and Youth programs the foundations supports. Contact the Maui Fish Pond association and give back to your local hosts. This was an awesome way to emerge myself in the community. It's a fundraising event for the school, with proceeds supporting their financial aid programs, which help many students who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to attend this outstanding school. The fair features live music on 2 stages, a wide range of crafts and clothing, incredible floral displays (which you can buy), and many great food and dessert options. It's a family friendly event and very popular. Wow, I popped in to take a look at the new YMCA Resource Center in Lahaina, located where the…read moreTamura store was on Kupuohi Street and I was really impressed. I received a warm aloha welcome from the ladies there and was shown around the facility and it is impressive. This isn't a regular YMCA, it is a resource center operating as a base for a broad collection of non-profits, catering to those who were affected by the tragic Lahaina fire. One hour of free childcare in their special childcare area is offered to anyone who visits to consult with the non profits, and the childcare area is beautifully decorated with a mural by an ex Lahainaluna student Michi.Co. There is a nice open area where kupuna classes in Tai Chi, Line Dance, Step Together and Tech World, etc are held. Pop in to take a look and grab a copy of their monthly classes, and their Daily Drip coffee get togethers. It has recently opened so they are still putting classes and other community based events together, but this is the up and coming place in Lahaina for kupuna, keiki and fire survivors. Go take a look, see what they can offer you, and take part in their community based activities. We are so blessed to have this amazing YMCA resource center.

So this place has a special meaning to his generation, growing up during a time when people were incarcerated just based on their last name. We visited here twice. He was so moved by the video that he wanted to watch that immediately upon arriving during our second visit. We spent several hours here, looking at each piece of history. We talked story with the guides who just happen to know a handful of my cousins. We bought books, I bought a nice aloha collection bag that was a collab with the vet center. One thing that surprised me was that kids don't come here on a field trip. They said there is one school on Oahu that consistently comes but that's it. It's easy to forget history once you're so comfortable so let's not forget. Hawaii is full of Japanese Americans who probably would have been rounded up in 1942 especially if they lived along the west coast. Education is important and we can see in this day and age. Knowing your history is powerful. I just passed by the sister vet center in little Tokyo in LA. It closes soon so we will have to visit this on another day. I wonder if there is a place similar to one in Japan town in SF. Anyways, everyone should go. Remember that our grandparents faced this. Just like the civil rights movement was just in the 60s - not too long ago.

We went to see "Removed by Force" documentary . We didn't…read moreknow you had to RSVP, but they were so amazing. Several people, us included had either seen the promotional spot on tv or in the newspaper. There was no mention of having to RSVP. But when the people at Nisei Veteran Memorial found out how many people were wanting to see it, they went out of their way to try and accommodate as many of us as they could. It was an amazing documentary and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to watch it. They mentioned that they are doing monthly movie showings. I wish I lived on Maui so I could be a part of that organization. We weren't able to visit the actual visit the center and see what was there, but we will definitely make plans when we come back. Please note the sign on the door that advisors visits are Mon-Fri by appointment only. If you get a chance, please go and visit.

Took the Lei Po'o workshop with my adult daughter and her friend with Kalia and thoroughly enjoyed…read moreit. Kalia made it easy, fun and informative and everyone left with not only a beautiful headdress but other goodies too, including a ti tree cutting to plant, and ti leaves and other necessities to continue weaving at home. Kalia is such a lovely gal, full of fun, happy to help out at any point, full of interesting info about Hawaiian culture and enthusiastic about sharing her skills with others. She is an excellent teacher and so friendly. Everyone enjoyed talking to one another, sharing ideas, and advice about other classes we had taken an Hui No'eau previously. The gardens, gallery and gift store are all lovely to walk though so make sure you don't miss out. Plus it is the perfect place to take a post class picnic in the shade and relax.

The classes are extremely organized and clean and there's ample parking.

There are some stunning pieces and all made by local artists who fund this gallery through a co-operative. It was a tough choice but I went home with 2 plates by Bob Hoenig and a pendant by Kai Pua. Andre, the Art Consultant, was very knowledgeable and generous with his time. Downstairs, in the jail house gallery, Amanda welcomed us and we left as friends. You must also check out Johanna's lei's - meticulously crafted out of ribbon. This is a dangerous place for your wallet, but you'll leave with a warm glow and great memories as well as a little piece of authentic Maui.

Most importantly are the people who work there and the children who bring life to the school. The adults truly care and are passionate about the children that they work with.
