I was happily surprised to see Palikū listed as a venue for a Candlelight Concert, and on an early Saturday evening at that! Attending a Candlelight Concert is a wonderful ASMR experience: contemporary music adapted to classical form, venue illuminated by hundreds of flickering candles. Tonight's featured artist was Bruno Mars, performed by string quartet composed of musicians from the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra. Set list was a little bit over an hour - the wonderful quartet nicely acquiesced to a hana hou. I hope to drag husband to more of these!

I saw the Phantom of the Opera at this theater about 6 years ago and just recently saw The King and I. They were both wonderful Productions. The theater is air-conditioned with clean restrooms located just outside. You must climb two or three flights of stairs depending on where you're sitting. On the second floor Lobby level there's an area for a reception. During the intermission of The King and I, there were soft drinks, candies and even red and white wine available for purchase or donation just outside. Be sure to reserve your seats early and the fifth row are the best recommended seats because it is the first row that is elevated and you have a partition in front of you to rest your program. No one is directly in front of you at your eye level.

The story takes place in the port city of Nagasaki, Japan during the early 1900s. A young, beautiful geisha (Cio-Cio-san aka Madama Butterfly) falls in love with an American naval officer (B.F. Pinkerton). She chooses to forasake her family and religious beliefs in order to marry him and become his devoted wife. (***SPOILER ALERT***) This opera evoked so much emotion. The love, tenderness, and passion shared between the two main characters was so palpable, I almost felt like I was invading their privacy. Cio-Cio-san's love, devotion, and unyielding trust in her husband was truly admirable yet also her tragic demise. My heart broke for her in the end. Everyone wants a happy ending to a love story, but this was not it. This instead was gripping and heart wrenching. A portrayal of innocent love that's crushed by the harsh reality of the true world. The actors/actresses singing and performance were absolutely amazing! I enjoyed everything about this opera from the orchestra, to the props, costumes, and background effects. This was such a pure delight for me and what opera (imo) is all about.

Acoustics were good and because no tickets for it, it left many of the audience standing as it was a packed house. Luckily for a 4 pm performance there was some shade on the outdoor stairs and a canopied area with some benches to wait until the doors were opened. Although we didn't have center seats since it was first come first served the view even at the end of a row was fine. Parking can be a challenge unless you come an hour early to snag a close by stall.

I don't support those kind of actors LOL This review is about, "The Piano Lesson" the actual 1990 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Drama, and professional stage performance, written by August Wilson in 1987. The scene takes place in 1936 Pittsburgh with a family having a debate over an heirloom piano. This performance was directed by Shervelle Hannah, who does an incredible job portraying Boy Willie. This character is super determined to sell the family heirloom piano, so as to make enough money to buy land from the former slave owner. The entire cast did an outstanding stage performance. Their voices, their body language, all combined with music and lighting made such compelling entertainment. Let's not forget the star, a majestic black piano carved with detail and included their family legacy of portraits. Bravo! This was a phenomenal performance ladies and gentlemen. We absolutely loved watching you on stage! And in case you didn't know, the United States Postal Service honored August Wilson in 2021 with his image on a Black Heritage Forever stamp :)

We have attended three performances so far, Honk Jr, Peace on Your Wings, and most recently, Mean Girls. I continue to be amazed at the talent. These performances have been held at the Hawaii Convention Center, the Hawaii Theatre, and Kennedy Theatre. Check out their website for enrollment information, credentials, and donate or support. I added a couple of photos from the most recent play, Mean Girls, which was hilarious and adapted well for the musical stage.

I've realized that my daughters and I have enjoyed classes here for over ten years and thought an…read moreupdate is overdue. I still feel that it was the best decision we made - especially in the terms of my younger daughter who started dancing here since age 5 and now 17 getting ready for college. My older daughter enjoyed taking classes during high school until she went off to college. How time flies! My girls had been with another ballet school in town but it was not the right fit. The smaller more intimate program they had at Alive Ballet was the reason my younger daughter has continued to dance this long. Keeping her in ballet was key to her development during her puberty years where she was often rebellious and not focused in school. We almost quit ballet because she would not keep up with her schoolwork and grades. However, Mrs. Maria cared enough to listen to my concerns and was patient with my daughter's attitude. My daughter was able to become more focused and responsible through ballet and furthermore made friends that are like sisters here. We'll always be grateful for what this studio means to my family.

I came to support my son who was part of an improv stage production,…read moreand I have to say it was really special watching him step out of his shell and get up on stage. The theater itself is pretty small, but honestly that's part of what makes it nice. It feels very personal and intimate. I think it seats maybe around 30 people or so, so everyone feels close to the performance. The presenters and the production did a great job and the show went really well. You can tell there's a lot of effort put into it. I'd definitely come back to check out other shows. It seems like the kind of place that hosts different types of performances--comedy, music, maybe even musicals. Really nice little venue and a great experience overall.
