I was happily surprised to see Palikū listed as a venue for a Candlelight Concert, and on an early Saturday evening at that! Attending a Candlelight Concert is a wonderful ASMR experience: contemporary music adapted to classical form, venue illuminated by hundreds of flickering candles. Tonight's featured artist was Bruno Mars, performed by string quartet composed of musicians from the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra. Set list was a little bit over an hour - the wonderful quartet nicely acquiesced to a hana hou. I hope to drag husband to more of these!

I saw the Phantom of the Opera at this theater about 6 years ago and just recently saw The King and I. They were both wonderful Productions. The theater is air-conditioned with clean restrooms located just outside. You must climb two or three flights of stairs depending on where you're sitting. On the second floor Lobby level there's an area for a reception. During the intermission of The King and I, there were soft drinks, candies and even red and white wine available for purchase or donation just outside. Be sure to reserve your seats early and the fifth row are the best recommended seats because it is the first row that is elevated and you have a partition in front of you to rest your program. No one is directly in front of you at your eye level.

Acoustics were good and because no tickets for it, it left many of the audience standing as it was a packed house. Luckily for a 4 pm performance there was some shade on the outdoor stairs and a canopied area with some benches to wait until the doors were opened. Although we didn't have center seats since it was first come first served the view even at the end of a row was fine. Parking can be a challenge unless you come an hour early to snag a close by stall.

Compared to Manoa Valley Theater, Kaimuki High School's Performing Arts Center has a large parking lot and seems like the interior can accommodate a bigger audience. The air conditioning was great! We didn't look for the restroom. The Box Office was easy to find. The seats were well labeled and the aisle was wide enough for people to walk by while others were seated. Why minus one star? There was a guy sitting in front of me, blocking my view. I'm not sure if he was just tall or if it's because the seats weren't elevated like stadium seating. Also, sometimes the spotlight wasn't on the main character - possibly a human error or not enough equipment? Anyway, it was a clean, safe environment. Our masks needed to be worn while indoors.

Improv isn't an easy skill for the novice. You have to be quick on your feet to take whatever scenario is thrown at the actors, act it out on the spot, and interact with the other actors to expand on the situation. The audience ate it up and laughed so much (especially the local/non local clips). It was the fourth of four nights for this hardworking crew and they were exhausted at the end of the show. If this troupe of young people can successfully fill a community theatre for four nights, it gives me hope for this generation. Mahalo, kids!!

The Design Center is located on Kapiolani Blvd. I rented The Cupola Theatre for a Christmas Function and my rental here was for a short 2 hours, I had additional plans with my guests elsewhere so my entire event was very time sensitive. I have worked with Joett in the past, and she is wonderful, but this time I had a different Event Coordinator. I stressed to the Event Coordinator (I want to spare her name) about the food needing to be out at or prior to 5:00 pm as I will be having my guests eat upon arrival. THE BAD: -Food was 20 minutes late. During the planning of this event, having the food out by 5:00 pm was an important factor. -The Event Coordinator; She was bad at communicating, forget calling her, she won't answer her telephone. Email responses took a few days if any. During the event, I had to ask for her twice, of which both times, she was gone again in a flash. -The first bartender was away from the bar a bunch of times, I had to look for him while trying to greet my guests. -The workers were un-attentive to my party, terrible at refilling the food trays, unable to approach, and un-friendly. -The food set up was unappealing and seemed rushed. -The room layout was a bit different than what was discussed previously. THE GOOD: -Food was absolutely delicious, so flavorful and the perfect bite size for socializing and drinking. My guests were raving about how good the cupcakes were. -The room had an assortment of sofa's, bar tables, and round tables. Loved the mixed match, loved the room, beautiful environment for socializing. -We had our own personal bar set up since we were pressed for time. The second bartender was very friendly and paid attention to our party in every aspect of the event. -Lots of parking in their private parking structure. -Despite the Event Coordinator being as she was, she is sweet and friendly. -I was given a credit and an apology for the mishaps, but preferred better service at full price.

There's a huge circular couch with some tables in the middle that front a large theater screen and the walls are covered with some pretty legit artwork, mostly pictures and a few paintings. The artwork is for sale. Don't ask me about the price, I only checked the price of one of the paintings and it hurt my eyes! Not only is this theater beautiful, but it would be an awesome venue to have an event at because of the food too! They serve some really awesome finger foods, wait, why did I just say "finger foods?" Let's be real, I was born and raised in Hawaii...They serve some really awesome pupu's! They have the infamous grilled cheese sandwiches from Amuse and some bruschetta, sliders, mini manapua, and so much more. Not to mention, customer service is great and parking is free so you can't really go wrong at Cupola Theatre!

HSO Lunar New Year 2026 Year of the Horse…read more I purchased tickets in row E, seats 46-44 on the right-hand side of the balcony as these seats gave us an unobstructed view of the stage and the performers. This was a very eclectic program, with music from China, Vietnam, Korea, as well as compositions by Liszt and Rossini. The guest artists were Lin Cho-Liang (violin) and Sophia Liu (piano). We got to our seats at 7:20pm and were dismayed to find the concert hall less than half full. Where is everyone? Perhaps they couldn't find parking as there were two other events at the complex. The HSO was in fine fettle and conductor Dane Lam was especially animated. Excitement was in the air! After music from China and Vietnam, Lin Cho-Liang came out to perform He Zhanhao's and Chen Gang's composition, The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto ... fabulous! However, the highlight of the evening for me was 16-year-old Sophia Liu playing Liszt's Piano Concerto #1 in E-flat major. It was a bravura performance! She returned later to perform the penultimate piece, Xian Xinghai's The Yellow River Piano Concerto. Those of you that failed to attend this concert missed out; she is someone to watch. The HSO ended the evening with Rossini's William Tell Overture. My SIL and I loved every minute of this concert. All I can say is ... WOW! Highly recommended! Let's all get out and support the HSO!

Now during my lifetime, I've met a LOT of actors too. You know the kind, that act nice to your face but will gossip behind your back. I don't support those kind of actors LOL This review is about, "The Piano Lesson" the actual 1990 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Drama, and professional stage performance, written by August Wilson in 1987. The scene takes place in 1936 Pittsburgh with a family having a debate over an heirloom piano. This performance was directed by Shervelle Hannah, who does an incredible job portraying Boy Willie. This character is super determined to sell the family heirloom piano, so as to make enough money to buy land from the former slave owner. The entire cast did an outstanding stage performance. Their voices, their body language, all combined with music and lighting made such compelling entertainment. Let's not forget the star, a majestic black piano carved with detail and included their family legacy of portraits. Bravo! This was a phenomenal performance ladies and gentlemen. We absolutely loved watching you on stage! And in case you didn't know, the United States Postal Service honored August Wilson in 2021 with his image on a Black Heritage Forever stamp :)
