The surgeon says my son cant travel for at least a month after surgery. I emailed the doctor's letter to Kaui Calls and Tina Funk. Our reservation is 23 days from today. The policy at Kaui Calls is you can cancel your reservation up to a month ahead. They offer travel insurance which I was stupid enough not to take. I know this was a big mistake. We are eight days beyond their 30 day deadline. But they won't make an exception and the person on the phone keeps saying " we can't we can't". This reservation is at peak time for Kauai and they have three weeks to fill it. I realize they don't have to be compromising, and they aren't. I am also in the rental business and when someone's child needs surgery I make the exception.

With NCL excursions, we would have had to give one of those things up (they don't offer the tubing) and it was prohibitively expensive.I reached out to Elena at Kauai Island Shuttles. she offered us transportation for both days with a tour guide for considerably less than NCL would have charged us. Our guide Dennis was waiting for us at the pier when we docked, drove us to the tubing appointment we'd made on our own and then picked us up after for sightseeing on the North Shore for the rest of the day. He was back again early the next morning and got us to Waimea Canyon before the tour buses got there so we could enjoy the views in peace. We hit a few more stops on the way back to the ship and made it back well before all aboard.

One of the things I wanted to do here was to rent a bicycle and do some on-road biking. All the books and online info quickly dismissed anything but easy beach path or mountain biking since many of Kauai's roads are without bike lanes and can be dangerous to bike on. On our tour, I asked her to show me some places that it would be both safe and fun to do some on-road bicycling, and Karen more than met my expectations. She showed me places that were off the main roads and less traffic-y but that had a variety of levels of challenge, as well as great panoramas (well, hard to have a bad view in Kauai). It was clear that she really knows the ins and outs of this island. On our second day tour, I wanted Karen to give me an introduction to kayaking on Kauai, similar to what she had given my for on-road bicycling. She suggested that we do some easy river kayaking and some easy ocean lagoon kayaking. I have kayaked on rivers and lakes, but was a a novice at sea and near-sea kayaking and with Karen's guidance, I felt totally at ease. What a delight to see green sea turtles swimming below me from the kayak. Both of the locations that Karen showed me would be manageable for a single/solo traveler, in terms of safety, parking, and proximity to the kayak rental site, if I wanted to return to the same places on my own. We first did the Waimea Canyon tour and we were picked up promptly on time in a 14-15 passenger van that was spotless and very comfortable. As we began our tour the tour guides shared their exceptional knowledge of all things Hawaii! As we got to know our tour guides we realized that their authentic knowledge and welcoming personalities had much to do with the fact that they come from a family that has lived on Kauai for generations and their tour business is family owned and operated. Taking a tour with a family owned and operated tour company just can't be matched by the bigger tour company's!! They also offered stops on our tour that are unique and no one else offers. We loved the Waimea Canyon tour so much that the next day we went on their tour of the Northside of the Island. This was also exceptional with lots of photo opportunities just like our previous tour. Stops in Wailua, Kilauea Point Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, and Heana, were among our top favorites. Bart did not share any history about the island. He only shared movie/tv knowledge. He did not share any cultural or historical knowledge. Don't waste your money or time! If you have a rental car, you can see everything for yourself. We paid for the "Ultimate Kaiya Private Tour, " which cost our family $1600.00 (with tip). The ONLY reason we tipped is because we feel it's important to support the local economy, and as I shared Bart was a nice guy. We did contact the business about our concerns, and they gave us a canned response telling us that they will tell Bart to do better. Hence the reason I am taking it to this review so that others can be warned. We feel we were dupped and that this business has unethical practices.
