A great local place to get steak fajitas and a margarita. There are other things on the menu, but the steak is so tasty that I can't bring myself to try anything else. If you get the fajita burrito get it without the cheese on top, it doesn't add to the flavor at all. Its also a great place to have a large group. read more

I haven't figured out the appropriate scoring for dive bars, so although I gave this place three stars, compared to other dive bars, it probably gets five stars. Was only here for drinks, but that is the way to go...good crowd, fun space, something low intensity but still fun. To me that is what makes a great dive bar. Their robotic Santa was, shall we say, intriguing, and they have a great jukebox. The owner/bartender has long, flowing, black hair, and there are all these portraits of her hanging on the walls. There are so many reasons to love this place. The food here is really good. I've often gotten lucky to come here when there is live music too. The place is large so I've never had issues with getting a table ever and I've been here a lot. The best part though is that they are open incredibly late. Both good and bad. The good is that they reserved a nice spot for us near the front stage where they had a really nice live band playing the rest of the night. The band was very talented. The bad news is they took a long time to set up and didn't start playing till about 10pm. And the waiter took a while on our order as well. Serving other tables 1st. And the food!!! Aw man. Haydee's has the best late-night eats. Always open and obliged to their customers! Love that the Mt. Pleasant location is so accommodating. There's karaoke, which is also very interesting after a night out on-the-town and you're up to being serenaded (or entertained by) spirited individuals. Love that I often run into Haydee as well. Honestly, I love the food and this place offers a variety to choose from ! This particular location is my favorite but parking is very limited. The restaurant is very homey so it makes you feel like you are at a family dinner. It always has a Groupon so if you are a little hesitant purchase that ! The food is really authentic and its hot when it arrives. One weekend I was there, they gave out free shots to everyone who was old enough to drink to celebrate a birthday for a customer. I loveeeee this place! The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food is very decent and the prices are very good for DC! The drinks are also satisfactory (admittedly I have just tried their margaritas and bottled beers) Also, the place is amicably ridiculous with the permanent Christmas lights, bad karaoke and usually horrible bands which play there once in a while :D This is one of the neighborhood businesses which is not still flooded with the usual hipster crowd. It is open pretty late and you cannot a more likable atmosphere to go to drunkenly, sing at the top of your lungs and eat heavy food that you need to sleep it off for days! read more

My previous review was 5 stars. I have reconsidered. Haydees is just not getting it much any more. The addition of music is great. (I should say bringing music back as it was not permitted in Mt P for a few years). Have seen some great Nashville touring bands and big red is always a blast. Have also seen a few not so good acts. That's fine though. Gotta start somewhere. As for the food it is a bit tired. Consistent yes but a bit heavy for my "maturing" taste buds. The menu could use a makeover imo. I still like the fajitas though. Not a fan of smelling like a cook when I leave a resturant. Crack up the ventilation! Good place to go for some Mt P action. Good for group outings. Margaritas by the pitcher make you forget the not so good things. I love you all! read more

My friend and I had been trying to go to dinner for what seems like ages now. One day we decided to go to Haydee's. It was a great choice. I only had one margarita ( had a long day the next day) and ate the steak fajitas. The margarita was good, fairly strong. The food was delicious, steak was perfect, not overcooked and the service was fast. Halfway through our dinner the group scheduled to play that night started setting up. The only problem I had with the place was the hostess tried to sit a married couple, clearly on a dinner date, next to me and my friend. Other than that, the service and pricing were good. Great, divey atmosphere for enjoying live weekend music. Decent enough food, but our group had a hard time getting any service after the meal. If one person flagged down our waitress for a drink, she'd take that one order then run off, rather than asking the rest of the table if they wanted anything. Eventually, most of the group gave up on drinks. We enjoyed the music, but the restaurant could have made so much more money with better service. Honestly, this place would get more business if the decor wasn't so terrible. We were sitting under a picture of sunflowers with a psalm written in Spanish above it, that was intricately framed with a dusty Christmas garland. The food, however, was decent - we ordered cheese quesadillas and salmon and shrimp fajitas. That was more than enough for two adults. The sangria, unfortunately, was watered-down and overpriced. This place is great if you know what you are getting into. It's a neighborhood eatery with good prices for food all the time, decent prices for happy hour and has late hours. Free chips and salsa. Comically tiny water glasses. Yes, the ambiance can be loud due to the roaming, conversation-slaying Mariachi band standing next to your table, but I'm okay with that. Plus, they move on to harass other innocent tables. For carnivores, I recommend the Burrito Especial (shredded beef) @ $7. It's a filling portion accompanied by a side of beans and rice. Also, the Salvadorian tacos are tiny, but tasty and the pupusas are worth investigating if you haven't had them before. This is a place where I take out-of-town visitors/family for casual dining. I like Haydee's a lot. I love the papusas, though, to be honest with you, the menu itself has been hit and miss, and I can never remember from one time to the next what was a hit. Few misses, really. Stick with Salvadoran food and stay away from the Mexican dishes is my rule of thumb. I really like their plantains. I love the live music and am also a little frustrated that there is almost no notice of who is playing when. There is a great New Orleans-style band that plays one Thursday a month but I'm never sure which one. The entertainment is certainly eclectic and since there is no cover I've nothing to complain about. I'm glad it is here. I've been here a few times, but yesterday was probably not the best experience. I went here with a Groupon deal that I was very excited to use. The food was alright - what really got me was the guacamole. I'm a HUGE fan of guacamole and for some reason, theirs was just off. It had a sour taste after and it tasted like it was sitting in the fridge forever. I immediately stopped eating it. My chicken enchiladas were good though. The music in the restaurant stopped playing in the middle of the meal and you could hear the other conversations around you. It wasn't the best time and I'd hold off on the guacamole if I were you. I don't really understand the good reviews. I came here on a friday night and we were seated. I am absolutely picky on South American Food being Hispanic. I ordered the wings because I knew I would be disappointed. I tried my friends pupusas and fajitas and they were not good at all. The wings were ok but honestly I have had better wings at dominoes. The salsa was basically water, the chips were hard. The band playing played country which wasn't bad but for a Latin American place, Id rather hear that sort of music. Went there last night after midnight for a dance party. The music was great at the beginning and had everyone dancing. There are no seats, so you have no choice but to dance. I'd say around 75 people were inside, whereas it would comfortably fit 40, so if you don't like a crowded party, don't go on Saturday night. The music is loud, but if you stay away from the speakers, you can carry on a loud conversation. I'd go again, and I'd recommend it as a fun time if you're close to the Columbia Heights Metro. read more

Haydees is simply the best place to eat in DC, maybe the universe. The staff are all friendly. If you want a place where you're not just a number, whee you can show up any time of day or night, get a baller meal on a budget, and walk out feeling like a million bucks and smelling like a fajita, well... Then this place is for you too. Haydees is a long- time fixture of the Mt Pleasant community, and is great for big groups. They have live local music every night of the week and karaoke too. Some people who gave this place bad reviews don't like year-round Xmas lights, and can't handle non-vegan food. I say good riddance. The folks who have reviewed this as a bar first and restaurant second have the right idea. Drinks, be they beer or liquor, are very, very cheap. Furthermore, the decor should be in some sort of "festive kitsch" hall of fame. Walking inside from Mt. Pleasant Ave you'd never guess what kind of gaudy and intriguing place lies inside. This place is best for large groups looking to have an alcohol soaked good time and quite frankly, that's not a bad way to spend a night out. I've seen a couple of great mariachi bands here as well. Seriously, I never thought a mariachi band would blow me away, but these guys were seriously good and were joined by numerous diners in singing songs. Despite the number of yelpers who deride this place for being inauthentic (whatever that might mean in this case) the place usually has a predominantly Hispanic clientele with a good number of gringos tossed into the mix, which is basically a microcosm of Mt. Pleasant. The chips and salsa are good and Haydees makes excellent pupusas. Other than that, I can't really say any of the food is particularly great, but none of it is really bad either. Basically, the place makes thoroughly average tex-mex food but does it in a festive and welcoming environment. It's also open quite late, which makes it a great place to end up after a heavy night of drinking. I've found the staff to generally be friendly, but sometimes they seem overwhelmed...it all depends on the server really.
