San Francisco: When the Hotel Becomes the Disappointment of the Journey San Francisco is a city many of us dream of visiting--a place associated with innovation, technology, beautiful landscapes and a unique urban culture. But sometimes, the place you stay can completely change the way you experience a destination. During our short holiday in San Francisco, finding reasonably priced accommodation was already a challenge. With hotel prices being surprisingly high, we eventually booked the San Remo Hotel, knowing that it was an old property with shared bathrooms. We accepted those limitations before arriving. What we did not expect was the overall condition and level of service. The room had an unpleasant smell, the carpet appeared old and unclean, and the bed sheets felt worn and not particularly fresh. Several basic facilities also had problems--the Wi-Fi was unreliable, bathroom door handles were not functioning properly, and there were issues with lighting. For an old hotel, some limitations are understandable. But age should not mean compromising on basic cleanliness, maintenance and hospitality. What made the experience even more disappointing was the interaction with a staff member, Mr. Dav, when we raised the Wi-Fi problem. Instead of receiving assistance or an attempt to resolve the issue, the response was essentially that nothing could be done and that we could choose to leave if we were unhappy. As a guest, that response was difficult to accept. The hotel itself is an unusual experience. The building has been divided into numerous very small rooms, creating an extremely compact environment. Walking through the property, you cannot help but wonder how much the building has evolved over the years and what standards apply to such configurations. This experience made me reflect on something bigger than just one hotel. People travel to San Francisco expecting to experience a modern, innovative and world-renowned city. When the accommodation experience is significantly below basic expectations, it can influence the way visitors perceive the destination itself. An old building can have character. A small room can be acceptable. A shared bathroom can be understood. But cleanliness, functioning facilities and respectful hospitality should never be considered luxuries. For us, the San Remo Hotel became one of the biggest disappointments of our San Francisco trip. If you are considering staying here, especially because of limited or expensive hotel options in the city, know exactly what you are booking and carefully read recent guest experiences before making your decision. This is an antique budget hotel with quirks, which I selected it, HOWEVER workers were stomping, whistling, talking really loudly in the hallway right outside my window (yes, old fashioned single panes window to hallway) before 8 am and shortly after, there were buzz saws running and and hammers pounding directly across from my room. It sucks the that the hotel doesn't respect its own quiet hours. One of the toilets was out of order and the one that was leaked water all over the floor when flushed. But I checked in earlier this afternoon, and it's evening and there is some plumbing work going on in one of the shared bathrooms, and the knocking and hammering is shaking the whole floor. And an adjacent room has a group of twentysomethings who sound inebriated and are making a racket. The other reviews I read indicated it was a rather quiet hotel. Definitely closer to a youth hostel. I'm starting to regret pepaying for 3 nights. I don't plan on hanging out in the room much, but it would be nice to get some rest. read more

Solid choice for an affordable stay near fisherman's wharf! I really enjoyed my stay here. This place is something between a hotel and a hostel. You have private rooms with sinks inside and the showers and toilets are shared. The room was cozy and I loved the decor. It's felt like I was going back in time. They have space heaters available which I felt like I needed because I haven't adjusted to how cold it can be in SF! With the heater the temp was perfect. The room is small so it heats up easily. The bathrooms and showers were clean and towels are provided. I never had to wait for a shower or toilet. The desk attendant was so friendly. There is free coffee in the morning as well as drinking water available anytime. Location is a amazing. Just a 5 min walk to fisherman's wharf! Fun hotel, we had a good stay. The bathrooms are shared with other guests. The shower and toilets have locks and are in separate rooms (you cant see people's feet, cant hear anything, complete separate rooms for every shower every toilet with separate doors and walls), I felt I was in a comfortable private environment. You can meet friendly guests in the hallway to talk to and we saw flyers of hostel guest socials! Coffee machine is free and tastes good. My issue is the ad pictures are deceptive: the ads showed private sink in the room, strategically showing at the top in the ad to make you think you have a private sink. When we checked in our room had no sink, the guy working there was apologetic. I am fine with a shared bathroom, but my husband was apprehensive about sharing a bathroom with strangers. I showed him the sink pictures before our trip, we figured he could pee in our sink and brush his teeth, disappointed no private sink, deceptive ad pictures. The fun unique vibe made up for it. My wife and I stayed the night here on 10/12/24 and unfortunately we were disappointed. We had a room with private bath. The room was at best 7'x9' and the bathroom was 32" wide and maybe 6' long including toilet and shower. There was a ceiling fan which was absolutely needed all night because of the muggy weather and we were on the 3rd floor. However, it was also very annoying because something in the fan was rubbing and made a constant loud clicking sound all night. The ceiling fan had a very low watt light that was equivalent to a very dim night light. However, other than the bathroom, that was the only light in the entire room. So once it got dark outside, the inside of the room was just as dark. We were then woke up by some haunted ghost tour that apparently they do every Friday and Saturday night. They were very loud and woke us both from a dead (no pun intended) sleep. The room and linens were clean. The hallway and staircase carpets were dirty and worn. The hallway decor was cool but it made navigating the hallway with a suitcase a tight fit. Parking is also a nightmare. There is never street parking available and it has a two hour limit or suffer a $97 ticket or even worse getting your car towed. We witnessed both happen. They gave us a map of two parking garages two blocks away with prices that are supposed to be reduced for hotel guests.​. The prices were supposed to be $35-$40, however, when I went to park, the parking garage had the price listed at $100. I ended up parking 8 blocks away at $60. The rooms have no amenities at all. There is a coffee machine by the front desk but has a sign that it is only available from 7am to 1pm. Overall, it is way over priced for the lack of amenities, lack of hospitality, room size, parking issues, and distributions. We stayed the next night at The Queen Anne just 2 miles away. We paid about the same price Overall for the nights stay when taking in parking and the Queen Anne came with a night reception with cookies, coffee, sipping whiskey, and breakfast. Not to mention, the room and bathroom was 4 or 5 times larger, parking was 100 feet away, and the overall decor and ambiance was awsome. read more

I stayed in this hotel for one night in October 2025. The hotel is old and run down. Carpets are faded and had many stains. There is no elevator even though it has three floors. The room I stayed in was not much bigger than the queen size bed it contained. It did not have amenities that one would normally find in a hotel. No air conditioning, no bedside tables, no Kleenex, no hand soap, no hair dryer. The bathroom was the size of a small closet and contained a single stand up shower stall and toilet. Since there was no air conditioning, I had to open the window which meant the noise from the alley below kept me awake until early morning. At 4:00am I was made aware that the kitchen in the restaurant was below my room. I awoke to pots and pans banging and people talking as there were making breakfast. I got up and opened the small chest to find five cockroaches scurrying out of the top drawer. I was horrified. I was able to kill two of them, but the other three remained somewhere in the room. I called the front desk to complain and quickly checked out, even though I had planned to stay for two more nights. The front desk person refunded my money for the two nights, but never apologized for what had happened. It was a horrible experience. read more

Where do I even begin--it was an absolute DREAM staying here. Easily one of my favorite parts of my trip. I was very skeptical at first--the sharing of bathrooms, small rooms, uncertain amenities--but I now know I had nothing to worry about and would recommend this place to anyone that's not afraid of having a different experience and is ok with redefining what they think of as a comfortable hotel. We arrived early. Our room was not available for early check in, but we were allowed to leave our bags until then, so we went out for lunch. Check in was easy. The room was VERY small with no tv or lounging space (other than the bed). Honestly, though, we didn't come all this way to take naps, so it was a good push to get out and explore. The bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and reminded me of home. There was a ceiling fan and a floor one to keep cool. They also supplied ear plugs, as the walls are thin. It was sort of comforting, though, hearing the staff clean up dishes downstairs in the restaurant and hearing the creaking of floors. Again, it felt like home. The bathrooms were kept pristine during our 3 night stay, and there never was a moment when there was a line. There are plenty of other bathrooms on the floor and even on the floor below. Amenities included soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels (which rested on a warmer), makeup remover cloths, cotton swabs, mouth wash, coffee, tea, water, candy, ear plugs, extra blanket in the room, and chair massage on each floor. The corridors of the hotel are also beautiful, with greenery lining the entire ceiling and skylights illuminating nooks and crannies. I found a nice little area at the end of the hall by the window to read, whenever I was too tired to go out. It was perfect. I absolutely love this place. read more

Disappointed. To be honest, if they warned me the room is tiny and the bathroom and shower are shared before I booked, I might still choose to stay here. However, on their advertisement the room is more spacious than I saw. I understand the hotel try to maintain like original and that's the reason why I would pick it. Since we intended to feel and experience the quaintness of San Francisco without being pampered by giant hotel industry, we've decided to try the San Remo Hotel in North Beach. The inconvenience of a shared bathroom on every floor is not for everyone, although the cleanliness, the towel supplies and the over all look of the communal bathrooms are really faultless. The hotel's location played an important factor as well as to why we considered to stay here. The major tourist attractions are stones throw away such as Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Coit Tower. The Cable Car station on Powell street is just right around the corner, it will take you conveniently all the way to Union Square but for a price! ($6 per ride). In summary, you get what you pay for and so much more, be warned though that rooms are small, the queen bed that we had is a tad short for six footers. They use the word HOTEL and I can't wrap my head around equating THE SAN REMO to a 'hotel' at all. Very European, very warm, extremely clean, welcoming and helpful beyond ANY 'hotel/motel' I've ever lodged in. Every single employee, every one, seemed as though they were so proud of THE SAN REMO and wanted to make sure I was ok with everything. Beautiful! Decor very nicely established. I need to double check....isn't THE SAN REMO on The Register of Historic Places? IT WAS EXACTLY LIKE VISITING A GOOD FRIEND AND STAYING IN THEIR HOME. I had two large bags and I pulled and pushed them up that one flight of stairs without an elevator....who has an elevator in their home? LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION....for me was the key. I was able to walk everywhere without being in a weird touristy environment. It was nice to be at The Wharf but not at The Wharf. Many Americans would find gong down the hall to a private commode room or private shower room uneasy. I think nothing of it. I guess I've traveled way to much to be pigeon-holed into preconceived notions. I reserved a room with a sink in it and that was a great thing for me too do. The always fresh coffee and iced fruit or cucumber waters helped. There were some nice muffins, mints and supplies available. It's a go to for me. The week I was there they seemed to be at full occupancy. There are two floors that I know of...maybe there penthouse is then a separate floor. This hotel is so cute, full of history, and very authentic! It's the perfect walking distance to fisherman's wharf, pier 39, & Ghirardelli Square! They have yummy coffee in the morning, and the front desk staff is friendly. My only disappointment was on San Remo's website it states the penthouse comes w TV with cable & Netflix, it does not. And when we called the front desk to ask what was up, they had no clue what we were talking about. The rooms seem clean until you stumble across strains or trash left from previous guest. Our bed had an old stain, the patio had an old cup of smoked cigarettes, and the shower curtain has what looked like a blood stain. So other than that, great stay! I don't know where to start with this place. It is quaint, inexpensive, centrally located, and riddled with character and history. It is hard to find a hotel in San Francisco where you don't feel robbed. This is a rare gem. It was under $100 a night (it was $90 for a double bed) and for $200, you can get a penthouse on the roof. The shared bathrooms are not a problem, which I being a female was leary about. They are clean and I never ran into anyone or waited in line (and it was a full house). It is VERY quiet. You can hear pots and pans from the restaurant below, but it didn't bother me. The beds are squeeky and the walls are thin- you can almost hear the conversations verbatim of the guests next door. Those are the only possible cons to this place. The hotel has so much character. Alas, no ghosts. It isn't creepy. Yes, it was build in the early 1900's (1910's) but it is so cute and warm- very Victorian- and really does have a true at-home feel. The bathrooms actually help make it feel more homey. The employees at the front desk are nice and informative- good customer service. Bottom line, I am going to stay here again and again. It's a little hard to find, but if's on top of a cafe/restaurant. Very cheap for slightly better than hostel. Walls are paper thin, and there are enough noises to wake me up about 4 times throughout the night. Sunday at 430am I believe the trash truck comes by the alley and wakes yo ass up. Shared bathroom/showers, each have their own locked door, so not quite full dorm style. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Free wii fi - they give you code) Pretty clean. Block away from trader joes and ralphs, very close to wharf area, about 3-4 block walk. (SF IS SO SMALL!) Not a good place if you want to have sex (Thin walls), are a light sleeper (seems like constant commotion), you need to go bathroom often (can be taken and a walk depending on where you are), or need to get out quickly (showers/bathroom often taken). But it's one of the cheapest in the area and the service is very good. They were even nice enough to mail me my slippers I forgot for a fee. I don't think I'll use it again, cause I need my sleep! But I think anyone who wants to do a better than hostel environment and save some cash (was $300 cheaper per night then where my event took place) would find this to be a great place. read more

Beautiful hotel with rich historical touches throughout. It was a bit different not having a sink or bathroom in the room, but we adapted to it, and it was a learning experience. Right next door is a lovely Italian restaurant that dates back to the early 1900's. Within a block or so are the piers, and the neighbor is quiet and safe. read more

With this being my first trip to San Francisco and planning on doing the whole tourist thing, I couldn't of pick a better hotel for the full experience. Sure there's no bathroom in your room but I really didn't find that much of a bad thing. They make that up with all the amenities and their attention to detail of good hospitality. From the free coffee/tea/hot cocoa and cookies in the morning to the Q-tips and mouth wash near the showers. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. They let you store your luggage after you check out for the day. The only thing I could of done without was that you hear everything from the street at night but I was still able to sleep from being tired from sighting seeing all day. They also have complementary ear plugs in your room just in case. If you are looking for a unique fun experience this is perfect for you. read more

I booked the penthouse recently for my birthday with my girlfriend and two of my friends. After having stayed there before and finding it small but quaint with a view that can only be described as mediocre. I decided that it would be a neat place to show my buddies who were flying in from across the country. I made reservations weeks in advance and when the night of my birthday came, and when my friends had been picked up from the airport, we proceeded to the San Remo hotel to check in and head out to catch up and celebrate my birthday. HOWEVER, when we arrived, my girlfriend dropped us off out front with our bags and went off to park the car. We checked in, making it clear that my girlfriend was parking the car and that she would be joining the three of us shortly, and headed up to the penthouse to put our bags down. It was about at this point that my girlfriend walked into the lobby and inquired about how to get to the rooftop "penthouse". No sooner did she make this inquiry, then suddenly the desk clerk "remembers" that there is a three people only policy in the "penthouse". I was shocked. Being a returning guest who had no problem checking in more than 3 white friends in the past, I felt that this was a clear cut case of racial profiling. I inquired further and was informed that the "owner had seen us on the camera and called in to remind the desk clerk of the new 3 person only rule". Conveniently the moment my black girlfriend walked in... I objected but the staff held firm that it was not negotiable and we were refused the room despite having already checked in, having it reserved for weeks, and having stayed there multiple times in the past with out incident. Needless to say this whole event put a damper on my birthday and made my girlfriend feel both dejected and responsible for "ruining my birthday" There is no room in this world for racism and especially not in a place a progressive as San Fransisco. I will NEVER return to this establishment and encourage anyone who reads this to think twice about supporting a shamelessly and outwardly racist establishment. read more

I absolutely LOVED staying here! The entire hotel is so cute with American history and art posted all around. There's even a patio on the roof! The rooms are perfect for a couple's getaway equipped with a sink, wardrobe, dresser, and a full size bed. My boyfriend and I found the room to be quite cozy and perfect to come back to and unwind in after a long day of walking around playing tourist. The shared bathroom is central to all the rooms and is very well kept. The showers have a heated lamp and standing room to undress while you wait for the water to heat up and all is blocked off by a thick wooden sliding door that locks to guarantee privacy. The toilets are also cool with a Victorian-style, pull chain flush. Lastly, location was everything! We were able to walk less than 10min to get dinner at any spot in North Beach which was truly our saving Grace! Being close enough to go grab an early dinner, come home and change, and then head out for some drinks with friends was all we could've asked for. Will definitely be recommending this hotel to all friends and staying here again next time I'm in SF! read more

This hotel was like stepping back into another era! It's a communal hotel in that the restroom/shower area is shared space with everyone checked in. But the old century aesthetic makes it so that you really feel like you're part of the San Francisco community, even if you are a tourist! The staff is also very friendly and amazingly helpful! The hotel is near many places you can walk to and if you're looking for something with a bit more class, the restaurant downstairs is amazingly up to par. My boyfriend and I loved this little hotel and feel lucky that we found it! I definitely would recommend this place to anyone visiting SF! I gave only 4 stars instead of 5 because the rooms are very close together and if you're looking for an abundance of privacy, this isn't the place to be. This hotel kicks so much ass ! It kind of reminds me of The Moor in Seattle just smaller. The girl and I are fans of historical buildings and places and staying two nights here was a real treat. Sure the rooms are small and the bathrooms are shared but that is part of the experience of staying at an older place like this, it's true awesomeness. The location is very ideal, especially if you are going to be doing the night time Alcatraz tour (which is one reason I booked here) and if you want to be cruising the bay along the wharf. I mean really, if you are not a lazy ass, you can walk to many top areas in SF from here or catch a bus. I'm amazed at the negative remarks in other reviews. Sounds like the negative Bobs were expecting some five star chain brand Hilton or Hyatt. Go on with your Kardashian taste and expectations and let the cool folks enjoy the San Remo. The Dude has a sense of adventure. The Dude has experienced the horrors of travel and has stayed in unsanitary conditions throughout this great land of ours. He can abide much. But this hostel is not for anyone into the whole brevity thing. The building itself is funky and very interesting. Lots of what have you cover the walls, with pictures of old San Fran from the building's years as an apartment for sailors and crab fisherman. It's a well maintained hostel, and there was never any concerns for the Dude's sanitary state. And yet no veneer has been applied to the walls to make it clean for the square community. The place has a definitely interesting aura, and this is what makes it cool. Other dudes and ladies have complained about the noise and the shared bathrooms, but the Dude spent a lot of time in communal living situations during the sixties and seventies, and this actually lends the place an air of hominess that you don't get in the big hotels. Where they lost The Dude was with the attitude. If the people at the desk would have just f**king LISTENED and engaged, they might have learned something. Hospitality bespeaks a mode of communication that instills a sense of welcome, some kind of sense that you've arrived in a place where you can call home for a space of time. The Dude received no such emotional empathy, simply the gruff, all business demeanor of locals disgusted by invading outsiders. It came off as real reactionary. The Dude wanted to ask these people why they were working in the industry at all. It detracted from the potential of the venue and pissed The Dude off. I try to support small, local businesses whenever I can, but not when they act like they don't owe me anything for the money I give them. But hey, that's just my opinion, man. read more

My boyfriend and I went on a roadtrip down the West Coast, so San Francisco was a natural stop. He had already been there and stayed at the San Remo with his family several times. He told me that it had shared bathrooms and was on top of a restaurant, but was really close to everything. This seemed promising, so I agreed. Although what he said was correct, I just found this place to be ridiculously charming. This is not for the person that wants to stay in their room all day - the rooms are small & meant for sleeping comfortably. The front desk was very nice and helpful. I constantly heard them giving out tips and tricks to the patrons. I was slightly worried about the shared bathrooms & showers, but I never had to wait once and everything was immaculate. The toilets even have pull handles - every detail made me feel like I was visiting San Francisco in another time. Sadly, you can see that I gave only 4 stars. I loved this place, but LORD HELP YOU if you want to sleep in. I mean like, 10 in the morning. Even MORE sad is it wasn't other patrons, it was the cleaning crew that made me want to scream! Talking very loudly, and basically doing their job as loudly as possible. I know that most patrons are out and about by now, but I was sleepy!!! I get cranky when someone ruins my lady beauty sleep. The San Remo made for a great stay when I spent a weekend in the Bay to run the Nike Women's Marathon. I was traveling on my own since my other cohorts were not "lucky" enough to win the raffle, so I opted for this little hotel in North Beach due to the price and it's enticing character. Turned out to be a perfect fit, too. I walked EVERYwhere from this place. I loved the location. North Beach is such a cute community and it was an easy walk to Chinatown and the Financial District. I knew the buses would be rerouted for the run, so I planned to walk to the starting line from San Remo. It was a perfect walk and warm-up, avoiding the chaos of trying to get closer to the start line via bus/taxi/car... and seriously, I was about to cover 26.2 miles. What's 1 mile more? Turn that into 2 more, since I walked back too. One thing that you must know about the Remo is that it's a shared bathroom situation. I was kinda concerned about this, but the facilities were spacious and private. I know most will not be this adventurous, but there is a claw-foot bathtub in one of the 2nd floor bathrooms, and I spent a good 2 hours laid out in that tub after the marathon. It was heaven. And I think that bath saved me from some pretty intense muscle soreness. And luckily, not once was there a knock or handle jingle, so I was left to savor my soak unhurried. The entire hotel is very cute and reminds me of staying at my grandma's house. Lots of floral coverlets, rocking chairs, and fun stuff like that. I stayed in Room 37 (second floor, facing the street, and it had a sink) and there was a reading nook just outside my door. I could have spent an entire day rocking away browsing through the bookshelves. I must note that I don't think this is a "romantic getaway" locale, that is, unless you are a very, very quite couple. I shared this little adorable hotel with all my little ghost friends. Indoor plants adorn the walls along with the vibes of "the Shining". I had to get up once in the night to go to the bathroom but luckily I was right across the hall from it. After exiting the bathroom I made eyes with a disturbing picture of two turn of the century children. Maybe it was their spirits that were roaming halls at night. The only other part that's a little disturbing is lugging your luggage to the parking lots two blocks away. Uggghh I should have commissioned those creepy ghost children to lug my shit for me. read more

I have stayed at the San Remo Hotel five times in the last couple of years and there is not a better hotel in San Francisco for the price,location, and experience! The staff is friendly, the hotel unique, and even though there are shared bathrooms they are always spotless. I recently stayed in the Penthouse suite on the roof and it is worth the splurge!! Beautiful views of the city and your own private space. read more

Sweet & unexpected. Came to SF for the Nike Women's Half and was debating on whether or not to splurge on a pricey hotel room or to suck it up and get something "budget." I went with budget (how much time do you really spend in a hotel room, anyway, right?) and am glad I did. This place was super cute. I can't get over it. Plants, plants, plants. Everywhere. I love pothos plants and they are allllllll over the hallways. There were even massage chairs! The staff was super helpful and have ice water, coffee, and little snacks available during office hours. It's within walking distance to the wharf, Trader Joe's, cable cars, and a number of restaurants. Parking is $18/day at a garage nearby. Don't let the shared bathrooms weird you out. There are private bathroom stalls (with no gaps in the doors and nice, loud fans) on each side of the floors, and private shower rooms. I highly suggest the back bathroom on the second floor-- there's a claw-foot tub with a shower and a window that has a beautiful view. And the bathrooms were ALWAYS clean. read more

Checking out at the San Reno this morning. I have to say I was nervous about this trip. I'm not a real "shared bathroom" kinda girl. But this hotel was one of the BEST parts about our trip We would spend 15 minutes each day cruising the floors and checking out all the other rooms as they were prepared for new guests. The charm, history, great artwork, sprawling plants, free tea and cider, small touches everywhere- the hotel is truly a gem. The rooms are SMALL!!! But the beds are more comfortable than the boutique hotel I just stayed in down in solvang! And you have everything you need- soap, shampoo, towel warmer for the shower. The bathrooms were always surprisingly available?? My suggestions- get a sink. No matter how comfortable you are with a shared bathroom- no one likes brushing their teeth in the hallway. Use the provided earplugs if you're a light sleeper. You will hear EVERY CREAK of other guests- but it reminded me of staying in a busy house when guests start stirring in the morning. And get a shower, use the restroom and GET OUT AND SEE THIS BEAUTIFUL CITY!!! Come home in time to sit on the massage chair in the hall and climb into the comfortable beds to recharge for the next day. If it was just the two of us and it was just a weekend, I would DEFINITELY be back. read more
