What can you do on Hump Day in Hampton Roads? You can go skating!!!! I just happened to see an event on Facebook stating, Haygood Rollerskating Center was offering Family Night every Wednesday starting at 5:30 pm. Entry, Skate Rental and UNLIMITED PIZZA for the Low Low Price of just $7.00 . We arrived around 6 pm and I saw a good number of cars in the parking lot which intimidated me at first. There was no line. We walked in and I asked to pay for an entry for 1, but I was advised everyone must pay $7 for entry even if you will not be skating. Even if you do not skate you still have the option to eat pizza which wasn't too bad. ( you get a choice is cheese or pepperoni ) The skating rink was not crowded at that time. Plenty of space between skaters and most where wearing masks . I saw hand sanitizing stations at the entrance, by the skate rental, at pizza counter and the bathroom area. This facility has 80's carpets, classic skates and even toddler skate walkers to help your little tots have a positive experience skating as they learn to get their balance... I do not know if they have those for adults. LOL but it would be a bad idea if they did. There were two bathrooms. One which I found to be a bit peculiar... I posted a video. The bathroom near the entrance had two stalls but no sink in the bathroom. when I exited the bathroom in disbelief I saw that there was a sink and water fountain on the outside of the male abs female bathroom. ‍. The sink area was a bit unkept for my liking and they had run out of paper towels. Overall we had a fantastic time skating... I saw we because my initial intent was to not skate and allow my son to have a good time but nostalgia kicked in and I decided to relive my youth. LOL The ambiance was great! Music bumping and the wind blowing in my face as I smiled, laughed and zoomed around the rink! Definitely a good time to break things up and get out the house and not spend a fortune for some comfort food and entertainment.. Tip: if you are going with small children I highly recommend that you get there at 5:30. Around 7 pm the crowd picks up and at 7:30 sims and disco lights come on and older children and adults seem to come in. Almost seems like a party Also know that pizza is served until 8:30. I use to come here as a preteen 20 years ago. I went here this past weekend. I've noticed a few changes. The snack area has bowling instead of various games and the snack bar now sells alcohol. It's still smells the same as it did 20 years ago but it's a skating rink and people sweat. ‍ I didn't get a chance to check out the play place or the pizza but I had a great time. They still play games with everyone like the limbo and 4 corners. The rink is smooth and, at times, can get crowded but all in all a great time. It's perfect for all ages. Oh the nostalgia! If you are a kid that grew up skating you would love it here. The fact that Haygood is the same look and feel of 90's skating rinks is what makes it so amazing. You really get what you get. Although I have been here plenty times before, this night was a silent disco event. Wow wow wow, so much fun! The event started at 11pm (ouch ), but was only open for this event. I like the fact that it was all adults during this time and the floor wasn't too crowded. Although I am all about the old skool look and feel, down to the carpet and the little lockers, the bathrooms have to be updated. The restroom is two stalls, with doors that sometimes close. The sink is outside of the restroom is where hands are washed. Although there was soap, there was no paper towels on site. I thought maybe this was the case because they had just opened. However, I went back toward the end of the event and still no paper towels. SN: The silent disco event was so fun. The music came through the head phones. The head phones were lit by 3 different colors which denoted the station you were listening to. The DJ was mixing primarily on one station. Such a fun adult night. Drama free! read more

roller blades cut my skin and now i have a raw spot on the back of my heal and not my fault i had long socks on and when i'd pull up the cushion in the skates it wouldn't pull up even when i took the skates off and most skates wouldn't lock like the clasps wouldn't shut and it would be like 2 out of the 3 clasps not closing and it came undone many times while i was skating, not to many more problems but kinda feels like AC doesn't work. read more

Good afternoon, My grandson was there last night with his mother, his auntie, his uncle and was enjoying roller skating and a lady that was assumed to be intoxicated was skating backwards and fell on top of them. He was given an icee and checked on by the skating ring staff but he needed to be rolled and carried to his mother's vehicle. He was brought over to my house where he was screaming. Uncontrollably and I suggested my daughter to take him to the emergency room. He was seen last night and the way hours of the morning and has now been diagnosed with a fracture to his shin. He is 5 years old. We don't have the information on the person that landed on him and I feel like there needs to be an incident report filed for this just in case something else further happens. I'm not sure who to contact in regards to this so I'm reaching out through this site and hope that somebody will respond back to me or get in contact with my daughter. Thank you read more

There is no list of dos and don'ts, so employees gave conflicting information . We had a party there lately i was not impressed. We couldn't decorate until an hour prior, you couldn't hang anything from the ceiling, couldn't move the tables to have a dance floor for the kids or for Princess Elsa to play games with the kids. The area under the jungle gym were filthy. The tables and chairs need to be replaced. The roller skates were missing brakes on the front and strings knotted. We had to request that the turn down the lights and turn the music up. The music was awful. No upbeat music!! No kids music. That sets the mood for the whole party and the kids couldn't keep skating after they ate. We will never return. Save your money!! read more

Brought the kids here for a Friday night experience. This is not the skating rink you were used too. It now has BOOZE! Its reasonably priced with the drinks too. It was $11 a person so not too bad but I was a bit disappointed you have to pay $5 to rent the skating helpers and they weren't that many so there was a wait list. I also loved that there were bigger kids helping the littles as they were trying to skate. They also have a little bowling area by the food and drinks if kids are tired of skating. I have been twice in the last month. Once for an event with a band and once for a Cheap Skate Night. Both times were incredibly fun. The staff is friendly and welcoming and always willing to help. It is such a welcoming environment, people are in good moods and are there to have fun. I can't comment on the bathrooms or food since I didn't the bathroom or eat the food. They do have lockers for $.25. Definitely worth checking out with your family or friends. It's like going back in time and brought back great memories as a child rollerskating. read more

Stopped in here for a Derby Girls meet when a friend from out of town who is really into gal's roller derby was visiting. I've wanted to come to one for a while so I was down. The location is pretty good but there is very little parking for events like the one I attended and the whole place is pretty old and run-down looking. There wasn't nearly enough seating for all the people who were there with something like probably 200 people and about 40 seats. They had some food and such but it was standard bowling alley type food - greasy and probably frozen and all fried. Easy to cook. The bathrooms are fairly horrible. There is a man and woman's bathroom which has two stalls and no sink. The sink for both is located in the middle outside so it's unisex... that's old and a remodel would fix that... Meh. If I go somewhere and there aren't enough parking spots - that's already enough for me to never want to come back unless everything else is spectacular.... not the case. I took my four and six-year-old here today for their first time ever rollerskating. The staff was phenomenal. Everybody was so friendly and so helpful. Social distancing was very easy and they were abiding by the mask and sanitation standards. They have very fair pricing for entry, skate rental and even at the snack bar. I mean, a four and six year old made it through their first time for over three hours! It was well worth the $40 between skating and snacks and skate/walkers for 3. This is random, but I left our Christmas cards that we have not mailed out yet in there. I called and left a voicemail after hours. Robin, who had been kind to us all afternoon, left me a voicemail from her personal phone telling me they had found them and they were safe in the office! We will certainly be back and I recommend them to you and will be recommending them to all of my friends. read more

I haven't been to a skating rink in years and I can't even recall if I ever visited this roller center before this visit...but nevermind me, my 9 yr old daughter loves it here!! From the outside it looks super small, but it's actually a decent size skating rink. In my opinion, the party area is a bit tight, but the kids had no problem getting in and out to play. There's a playground inside of the rink...crazy tight it seems. And just from the looks of it I wouldn't want my child up there. It's rather shaded, low light, and it just doesn't appear to be sanitized enough for me. And it's located steps away from the party area (tables and chairs). The skating rink offers deals from time to time so especially with school out there may be some themed party nights or discounted nights for the children or even the whole family. I do believe there's a mini bowling alley or something along those lines located inside too. But it's just too much going on in here for me. The restrooms could be kept a bit tidy throughout the day and the concession pricing wuuuuuwe... Go at your own risk, but for some reason the children appeared to be having a blast even if they couldn't skate. Age ranged from newborn to 55 maybe older. Well, can I really call myself a VB native if I've never been to this skating rink growing up? I plead the fiffff. But when Shaggy from Z104 announces he was having a 90's Night complete with 90's prices I made sure to round up my best friends, dress up like the 90's, and goooooo. We had the time of our lives!!! Five dollar entrance fee that included skates while Shaggy played the greatest hits from the 90's AND took song requests!?!?! How can you pass that up!? #GoDJCuzThatsMyDJ The reason it's not a 5-star review is because the place is in desperate need of a nice facelift. Can we say dated?! It's definitely stuck in the 80's but I'm not completely mad at that. It's just, well, you know... It would be nice to see it modern and new. As soon as we walked in it was like stepping into the past. It was something nostalgic. The floor, though, was fine. I really loved the leftover Something In The Water vinyl stickers still on the floor. Made me smile every time I looked at them. The carpet needs to be cleaned, place could use a paint job, and I'm not too sure about the old school lockers if they should stay or go; they were so rusty and creepy looking lol. I didn't have the pleasure of using the restroom so I don't know what condition they're in. Skates are the typical brown ones with orange wheels. No half sizes so try on a few. I wore thicker socks and I still managed to get two big ugly blisters on the bottom of my feet. I believe the cafe took cash only but the low, low prices are not to be argued with. I only purchased a fountain soda. Parking lot seemed pretty abundant so no complaints there other than it could probably use more lights in it. However, after reading other reviews I guess the parking lot isn't as plentiful as I had visioned. Maybe it just looked like a lot because it was mostly empty. Overall, a fun place to go with the right people! I just know we had fun! Fortunately for us there weren't many people in there so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. I want to start by saying I grew up coming here on field trips with summer camp so it has a lot of good memories for me! I took my 8 year old brother here on a Sunday and it wasn't very busy. To be honest a lot of things could use updating here. The skates had worn out soles on the inside so be sure to wear thicker socks. The play area is also very outdated. The rink itself is very big! Lots of room to skate where you're not having to avoid other people or colliding with anyone. I also thought they had a good variety of music that catered to lots of people's taste. read more

I love skating here! Can't beat their Cheap Skate night on Sunday's for $5 (including rental). Very spacious, which is great if you're first learning (or re-learning) to skate. As an adult who hasn't roller skated since 2001, I found it a bit difficult at first. However, it's a very forgiving environment, everyone's either learning to skate or they are an advanced skater psyched on skating and happy to help out. Great parking, huge rink, there's an indoor playground (somewhat small), indoor bowling, a concession stand with $2 water (but there is also a water fountain), and restrooms with super high urinals, because you're on skates, lol. I do recommend looking at the skates you're given when you rent. Look for gum on the wheels and turn the wheels to make sure they spin (they might have a wheel-wig on them, hair, I mean hair might lock up the spin). This place needs a serious update. It felt like the 80's when we walked in it was so old. My family and I went on a Thursday night and they offered free pizza. The pizza was gross but hey, it's included in the $7 skate rental. Everything else wAs overpriced. My husband ordered a soda and they filled it to the rim with ice then added a squirt of soda. After three sips, it was gone. Not enough drink to quench your thirst. Lockers were a nice size and only $.50 to secure one. The skates need to be replaced because a lot of the straps for the roller blades were malfunctioning. The rink was a nice size and we did have fun. The music was ok. A lot of old school music but recognizable. I don't see this rink lasting too much longer. Not because of the quality but because times are changing and a lot of kids don't depend on outside sources to entertain them anymore. I would definitely come back for a fun family night. read more

Attended my first roller derby tonight compliments if yelp! (Thanks for all the yelp swag, perks, and VIP beer tickets!) This was exciting. Haha. Girls rolling around. Racing. Pushing shoving. It's like hockey with out the walls and pucks. The place seems family friendly with a big play place area. They do serve beer at the derby events. Slushies and soft drinks are served too. Come early to get a seat. I got here a bit close to the start time but thankfully yelp had nice reserved seating. Woohoo. The half time show had a human skating jump. Crrrrazy fun. Also the derby girls donated a grand to a kids hospice organization. Good stuff here. read more

I have been to this place for B-day parties and on regular days. My boys love coming here. They always have a blast! The place is large and has plenty of seats for everyone. There is a mini bowling section with 2 lanes. They also have a indoor playground, that my boys love. The entrance price is reasonable and they offer military discount. The food is your average pizza, burger, nacho and fries at a decent price. They also have several flavors of scoop ice cream. There are arcade machines and other games the kids can play. The staff is friendly and attentive. The bathrooms are clean but are a little outdated, no big deal. The music is a AAA+! They play a little of everything Over we really like this place and my kids being happy is all that matters. We will keep visiting this skating rink! read more

The place isn't brand - spanking new and one of the lockers ate my quarter, but I was happy to find a place that let's people skate cheaply. I attended this skating rink as a Yelp Event to go see the Dominion Derby Girls. The facility is huge, clean, and it has a fun atmosphere. The concessions were reasonably priced. Food was great. Bathrooms were super clean. The staff were very helpful and cheerful. I enjoyed a game of playing with their pin bowling...very fun, inexpensive. The only thing that I wasn't pleased with was that they do not take credit cards to pay for rentals, nor their foods nor for any of their arcade. They did, however, had an ATM on site...which turned out to be out of service. *bummed* But glad, I had $20 on me. *smiles* I love the music that the DJ was playing; it was up to date and fun. The event I went to see - Dominion Derby Girls, was quite entertaining. I cant wait to go back again. FYI: I drove from Newport News for this venue and event! Not only is it a great place to go to with family, friends or a date, but it brings up memories of the younger years. They have deals every day of the week, and these deals can be found on their website. To those who have toddlers, I recommend taking a look at it and maybe having it planned as an activity when they're free from school. I've taken a my little 7 year old "sister" a good amount of times, and she has been slowly learning how to skate around the rink. She loves absolutely loves coming here! The prices are fair, especially the deals, in my opinion! I have heard from some people to watch out for a bump that is in the rink. I have been told that that is where they fall down. I have never experienced problems with the bump, but I am taking points away. It is something that should be looked into getting fixed. The kiddo loves the food here, I personally am not a fan, but I couldn't take too many points. The palette of a kid differs from that of an adult. Personally, I would wait to get pizza or anything else after the skating. But again, it may be a kid thing. Even by the time I was a kid, skating rinks had lost their stride, so to speak. They were beyond retro, a joke from the bygone era of disco. But alas, like all trends there has been a resurgence of roller skating and Haygood is leading the pack. My sister and niece invited me to come along with them on their skating adventure and I was so glad I did. After spending a few bucks, putting on my skates and whirling around the rink a few times, I remembered how much fun skating really is. It didn't take me long and I was jamming like a true disco queen. But I was nothing compared to some of the pros there--kids and adults doing jumps, spins, and tricks across the floor. If you haven't been skating in a while, grab some kids (if you don't have any, borrow some because you'll look like a weirdo if you're over 18 at the skating rink alone) and go to Haygood. Inflation has definitely hit the skating rink market, but it's still a fun and cheap way to wear yourself out. read more

It was a Saturday and I had one adult and two kids. That came to $30 to skate from about 3 in the afternoon till 8. The place was packed. I guess there are better days to go there but my kids are small and they were getting pushed and trampled. My kids lasted for about 45 minutes before they had enough. Maybe I am getting too old, but the kids there all unsupervised, rude to the younger kids, and acting like animals. The bathrooms were run down and fairly gross. I have been here once before for a roller derby match and it was interesting to watch. The crowd was even more interesting. Don't think I would go back there for that either Overall, I asked for my money back and the kids were happy to leave. The boyfriend and I went here for the first time tonight and had a blast! It was the first time I had been on skates in years and it was so great to learn how do it here. It is an old place, but I really like the 80s vibe. That's how skate rinks should be! The staff were very nice and assisted me in purchasing some skates of my own, since I don't want to keep using the rentals. I really liked how there was a small store where you could buy skates and wheels and other things. I didn't get to check out the arcade or bowling alley, but the pizza looked pretty legit. Perhaps it was because of the superbowl, but I found the large projection screen towards the back of the rink a little distracting. People would stop to watch, which is a little unsafe for those who are zipping around the rink or not as good at dodging people yet (like myself!) The bathrooms are kind of weird since the sink is outside and unisex. Though I didn't use them, they seemed to be decent. I saw a lady mopping it out with bleach. The place is cash only, which is interesting. I have not encountered anything like that before. It's not a problem however...it adds to the vibe :P Overall, the experience was great!! Flash back to 1983. I am 13 years old and I just moved to a new town where THE place to hang out for anyone under 16 is the skate rink. I want to fit in and make friends but I am shy, insecure, and I can't skate at all. My memories are pretty much of me standing around watching others skate. Now, now, don't feel sad for me, I survived and life has turned out pretty great but my memories of skate rinks aren't all that special. Fast forward to this past Sunday when my son was invited to a birthday party at this skating center. I walk in and the place looks like that skating rink from 1983, which is perhaps good and bad. It's good because it definitely has that old school feel but bad in that it has that old school feel. It kinda depends on how you view it. They have two different concession stands where you can get some food and drinks. They have an area for hosting parties or to just be seated while having your snack. There is a play area for the kids who might not want to skate and a mini-bowling area up front. But, the main attraction is the skate rink that looks just like you remember it as a kid. I honestly didn't recognize a single song they played but it kept everyone on the floor and enjoying themselves. All in all, you know what you are getting if you come to this rink. If you enjoyed skating as a kid, this place will be a nice blast from the past for you. It's a relatively cheap and nostalgic way to spend a couple of hours. For those of us who couldn't skate back then and still can't, just remember, it gets better :) read more

Don't let the fact that they rent roller blades fool you. This place puts the old school in old school. Seriously, I don't think it has changed one bit since Ronald Reagan was in office and cell phones were the size of basketball players' shoes. The second I set foot in the door I feel like it's1983. I expect "Mickey" and "Tainted Love" to be on infinite repeat on the sound system. But alas, they have changed up the music at least. You're more likely to be busting your roller rink moves to "How Low Can You Go" by Ludacris or "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus. The place is dark and dingy in a time warp sort of way. It seems like all the walls and surfaces have been slathered over with dozens of coats of paint instead of replacing anything. But then that's part of the charm. Their rental skates are pretty beat down. Next time I go I'll definitely bring my blades. Haygood Skating Center is the home of the Dominion Derby Girls for the last few years, which is cool. They're the local flat rack roller derby babes. I went once and saw them and drank beer and saw a band, which was fun. And of course, kids love it. My daughter went to a birthday party there recently and had a blast. Bottom line, skating rinks are just fun. There aren't many of them around any more. I hope this one hangs in there. read more

I love this place! I grew up skating here, as did my parents. It is a little dated but to me that's what makes it perfect! The staff is always fun, the music is usually good, and it's kept clean. I'm hopeful that the owners continue down this path providing fun, safe and clean entertainment for the community. Sure, the front end bathrooms are old, men's room doesn't have stall doors, go to the newer restrooms in the dinning area. The skates are old, they are used a hundred times a week. We went on a Friday night and the place was LOADED with teens and tweens. Most of the people there are really good skaters and zip around weaker skaters with reckless abandon! It's all good though, because I'm bigger than most of them, and they will fall before I will ;^). The facility was clean, the floors were well maintained and at closing time, a staff member was sweeping the skating flow while skating backward (cool). They played a variety of good music too. The staff was friendly, and seemed very willing to work with parents who were there chaperoning. The food was typical of diner fare, and there was a decent selection. We will try going back on a family night and see what that's like. read more
