First impressions are everything. Lots of money has poured into this location and it shows promise for a variety of activities. The unfinished front entrance, however, is confusing. Paint it, strip it, or change it. After waiting a few weeks, we visited on a Friday right after 5 p.m. Overall, nice place, lots of space, and warm welcomes. Cool. Then out came the leaf blower during our visit to remove a few pesky leaves out front. "What?" we yelled at each other. Worrisome. Several early reviews questioned service and tastiness, so we lofted them a couple softballs: Classic martini, Manhattan, and flat bread. The Flatbread with prosciutto, goat cheese, fig jam, and arugula was fantastic. I'd order it again. The drinks, however, were poorly made, lacked the proper ingredients, and reflected a novice behind the bar. When does a classic martini taste sweet? And when does a Manhattan look pale as a rosé? It was explained the regular bartender was not on shift. Ouch. I have high hopes for this place, but clearly, they must figure out how to present themselves as a tour de force in this tiny, emerging space as great eats in Monroe. My first impression was not great. The outside is definitely confusing, not sure why they're leaving it unpainted and difficult to determine where the door is? Upon walking in, you step into A random room with a ramp, tv's and some couches. Again, confusing as to where to go... found the hostess stand and walked over to the bar for some drinks. Several big parties were seated and the bartenders were complaining about lack of help. I ordered the cosmo and was underwhelmed, as it tasted like nothing but lime. The tv's at the bar area were the smallest I have ever seen, odd. It felt like such a weird vibe and didn't want to take a chance on the food considering it was not cheap. This is a great place to get a bite to eat and drinks. Came here on a Sunday afternoon to get a snack with family and this place did not disappoint. My husband loved the chicken tacos! The service has consistently gotten a lot slower here. I definitely understand new kinks and working everything out but I also think that a few months is enough time to iron them out. My biggest complaint is the lack of consistency in the food. I ordered a dish a few times and it's come out different each time- sometimes good and sometimes bad- with the pricing here it's just not worth the "bad" times. Agree with the other review posted. Menunis extremely limited, but according to the team, they do have plans to expand eventually. We went and just sat at the bar but were greeted after a minute and handed menus. They offer a ton of cocktail options as well as some beer and many wine choices. We just ended up having one drink and headed out, so we did not try anything on the small food menu. I felt that some of the food items were a bit pricey, but cocktails were priced as expected. Bartenders were friendly and chatted with us a bit since we were right at the bar. You can definitely tell this is a newer place, but think it will be great once they get more established. The space is nice and open with lots of seating. They also have some seating areas outside of the main room. Inside is minimal and simply decorated, which I really like. This is one of those places where you dress up for a night out or wear jeans and either way you would not feel out of place. Overall, it's not a bad experience. We will be back in a few months to see how they have grown. read more

Good drinks, bad food. Started out with the deviled egg app. Eggs were okay but the bacon jam was yummy. They have a few ipa's of their own and I'd recommend the hazy, not the west coast. Unfortunately the entrees were not good. My steak spent too much time on the grill and char marks became burnt marks. I had to send the side salad back because the dressing was disgusting. The steak tasted low grade and was full of fat for a ribeye. The salmon was not much better. It was cooked well but had no flavor. The kale that it laid on was inedible. At least the service was good but not enough to bring us back. read more

We waited a few weeks after opening to try this new place out and we finally tried it today! Ambiance- So nice! Brick walls, so many tables, indoor and "outdoor" seating, seating areas for groups and a stage for bands. Loved the flowers in the planters too! Service- Slowwwww. I think there was maybe only one server there? She definitely was nice but we waited almost 10 minutes for our initial drink order. We ordered our brunch entrees and asked for an appetizer of fries with aioli. My daughter's well-done burger came out at the same time as the appetizer. The other two entrees came out several minutes later. Food- The fries with aioli and Parmesan were so so good! My daughter's burger, which was listed as coming on a brioche bun, came out with no bun. When we asked for the bun, the hostess (maybe the owner, not sure) asked if we had asked for a bun. Umm. It's a burger that says it comes on a bun. She said it was just average. Shrimp & grits are my favorite thing to order for brunch. These were definitely meh. The sauce or gravy they call it seemed greasy and watery. I was definitely disappointed. The shrimp were definitely fresh though! Chicken & Red Velvet waffle for my husband. He liked the chicken but overall thought it was just okay. This is my first time at this new restaurant in downtown Monroe after being open for a few weeks and in one word...mediocre. My first impression is that they need to paint their door. It is not easy to find the entrance if they don't have the big doors open. But once inside it's airy and nice natural light. It has clearly been completely renovated and the ambiance feels like a restaurant in Waxhaw or higher end community. We were seated promptly and our server was friendly. I ordered a mojito and already they were out of mint. I ended up getting a cosmopolitan and it was well made. They have a nice wine list, per glass is a little pricy for Monroe but fair for the wines offered. The menu is VERY SMALL with limited choices. I was not impressed with the options as there are no plain fish options and healthy choices are basically non-existent except for the wedge salad. We ordered a variety of items and it was hit and miss. The serving size was actually what a portion should be but most will find them small. -Shrimp & Grits : slightly spicy. 6 shrimp and some sausage (which I could have done without). Flavor was ok. Not too salty bit no flavor punch that I expected -Chicken Fettuccine - if you like Michelina's frozen fettuccine, this dish is for you. I'd have a hard time differentiating between the two, which was quite disappointing. Nothing special about it and it was boring at best. -Meatballs on Grits- the flavor of the meat and sauce was good. Grits as the carb choice was odd. -House Flatbread- best item of the 4. Nice balance of flavors. Well prepared and not over cooked. Also, food needs to come out at the same time! It wasn't that busy (Tuesday) and it was 10 minutes between the first meal and the last hitting the table....TOO LONG. Overall, I'm hoping they hire a legitimate chef who will expand their menu and get a little creative with seasonings, otherwise they are just another Monroe restaurant in an awesome space. read more

I hear the food is good. My problem is that they don't accept cash as a form of payment. Plastic only. They said it's a security issue for them. I don't understand. U.S. Currency is not accepted for food or drink. But, the waitstaff is allowed to accept cash for their tip. I have plastic; but, no cash? Their business, their rules. read more

Food was terrible. Ordered wings, overcooked, hard to eat. Blackened chicken tacos were so salty and chicken overcooked, again hard to eat. Fish and chips, not sure the fish was actually cod. Definitely not fresh fish and also extremely overcooked. Food portions are very small. Drinks were okay but didnt seem to have enough alcohol, almost like a virgin drink. The drinks were prepared well and nice assortment of cocktails, missed drinks and beer. Service was very good and did not wait too long for any portion of the meal. The entree came out when we were ready for it. Ambiance. I like that they are in the old,1924, Monroe Hardware building. When you have 6 ladies for Brunch and the food is fantastic and the service is wonderful these 6 ladies will be telling all their friends. My wife and i have been there 2 times and never got any service, the second time was last night and sat at the table they seated us at and 15 minutes and nothing. No body came to our table so we left..again. The first time we were at the bar for 30 minutes and not a single bartender asked us what we wanted. Being a supporter of local businesses, how can you support a business when the staff is more interested in talking to their friends than taking care of the patrons. The only person that cared was the person that seated us. After that nothing , so if anyone asks us how it was or if they should try it i would tell them they are waisting their time and dont bother. Didn't even know this was a restaurant for a while now, old scratched up doors don't give a nice restaurant welcoming vibe to come in, really don't feel like coming to check it out. I only noticed it's a restaurant when the doors were opened to notice on a red light otherwise wouldn't know still, please please paint the old ugly doors they definitely don't look inviting at all, at least paint them all white so it looks nice , if the restaurant looks nice on outside people would like to come in check it out, and make your restaurant sign way bigger, or write on the doors its a restaurant. lots of people in Monroe don't even know you guys exist, I asked my friends if they heard of your guys restaurant and they said what new restaurant in downtown Monroe haven't seen it. If you want to have more people come in and survive as a restaurant. please consider painting the doors and maybe putting up a bigger sign for people to see when driving by because no visible big enough sign for people to see. Absolutely terrible. dont waste your money. First of all, whoever the waitress was Thursday night 2/27 should not be working in hospitality. the waitress never introduced herself, she approached the table in a bad mood. We were a table of 11, she asked if our two 2 year olds were "even gonna eat anything because i need to number my ticket". Went for my moms birthday dinner. She started with an extra dirty martini, that came out brown.. not drinkable so it was sent back. my brother in law ordered an old fashion.... no orange slice/zest. my sisters margarita tasted virgin. once the food arrived, everything was cold. fish was extremely hard and overcooked as well as the fries on every plate, the fries were overcooked so much we could not even squeeze them between our finger tips. i ordered a wedge with blackened chicken, the chicken had NO seasoning and when i told the waitress she said "that is blackened, you just cant see it" huh?? no apology or saying it would be fixed. i said this is not blackened, and point out my sisters plate who had grilled chicken and looked identical to mine. the waitress responded with an "ok". my moms chicken sandwich was cold the bun felt like it had been in the refrigerator, her "creamed spinach" side came in a 4oz ramekin and was full of cheese and looked completely inedible & once again when brought to the waitress' attention she responded with an attitude. my dads "blackened chicken tacos" again no seasoning on the chicken, the corn tortillas were completely cold and the tacos were deconstructed, the "mango salsa" advertised was a ramekin full of diced tomatoes! the brussel sprouts were burnt to a crisp but were completely cold. (how does that happen?) the pulled pork sandwich my fiance ordered tasted like a sloppy joe from a microwave dinner. after all of that disappointment, the waitress then came back to the table to tell me they were making me new chicken for my salad and 30 minutes later still no chicken, and she said "oh you didnt get your chicken did you ?" i mean completely unprofessional, no apology on her behalf, no response from a manager or the kitchen. everything was just disgusting. we got no refills on drinks the entire time. they had THREE tables full in the entire restaurant including ours and were completely negligent. do not go here. they will not be in business for long with this kind of service. almost a $300 total ticket for old & cold food. no sight of management on site and POOR, POOR service. also, there was no mention of added gratuity on our tickets (we had 3 separate checks) but my fiance noticed when paying that the tip percentages displayed were 1, 2 & 3 percent. no wonder the waitress didnt care about all the mistakes and poor service, she still made her money off of us with hidden gratuity! We had a great experience. Came upon it as we wanted something new to eat while in downtown monroe. Very cool vibe and I look forward to spending more time here since this particular meal had to be rushed. The staff accommodated our request to have our meal quickly and our food came out fast. I've been to Hayne Street Gastrolounge twice and both times have been great! Menu is a bit limited but what is on the menu is done well. I had the flatbread appetizer which was absolutely delicious and the burger which was cooked to order and very well seasoned. Service was prompt and we were consistently checked on. I ate on the inside both times and the ambiance was a very nice modern industrial. It's great that a historic building in downtown Monroe has new life! Will definitely be a regular. read more

I felt horrible for my niece.. she planned my sisters (her mother) bridal shower there and was told she could come in at 10:30 am on September 1st to set up. We showed up at 11am expecting to start, but the doors were locked and she couldn't reach anyone. Meanwhile we're standing outside sweating holding a box of decor, a cake, balloons and gifts. Finally around maybe 11:30- 11:45 2 kitchen staff came in and after talking with them, they let us in. No one turned the lights on for us or any thing else. Finally a man approached and said how sorry he was and that several weeks ago the had changed their hours (why was she not informed). He said he wo make it up to us and start with drinks. After taking everyone's drink orders, we were brought out what we ordered and then ordered our food. Although we were lite the only ones in the restaurant, it took forever to get our food, with the child being last. Then they brought out a side of grits that no one had ordered so they said it with the child's plate. My mother never got her sweet tea she ordered, instead they brought her a mimosa and she does not drink. we did not receive any refills on our ice water. They only wanted to keep bringing the alcohol which we were all under. The assumption, was being taken care of because of all the problems. But when the bill came... nothing at all was comped. We had to pay for all of mimosas that we were under the assumption we're free, because he said he'd be taking care of us due to the mix up. My niece got stuck with a $240 bill because they charged her for the extra grits that no one ordered plus all the other alcoholic drinks And on top of that they had the audacity because we were a bigger group to add in the tip, which they did not even deserve by any means. My niece was completely mortified and thought we were all gonna be mad at her. I do not think any of us will be going back there anytime soon and I would suggest you not try to plan a bigger function there. read more

I really tried hard to give this establishment the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to do right by the customer. However, after being run around without resolution of my issue I feel it only fair to warn potential customers. I met with some friends on Sunday afternoon. As some of the reviews have noted, the entrance was not exactly obvious and luckily, we were sitting near the doorway so that we were able to flag down a friend who walked right past it. We were made aware that they were only serving off the brunch menu, which was fine, except there was no chicken or deviled eggs. The deviled eggs were not a big deal, but that left out several items on the menu to include the dish I had intended to order. I didn't understand this as chicken is readily available at most any grocery store, but decided to see this as an "everything happens for a reason" and try something different. The service was not anything close to acceptable; nice, but just not appropriately sufficient. I had one glass of water that no one ever came to fill or offer a refill, and dishes were not cleared away as we finished our meal. Additionally, we had to hunt someone down to pay our bill so that we could leave. In doing so, the modem was handed to each with nothing more than a tip menu; it did not supply a rundown of the bill. As such, tip was added for less than par service only to find out that they place an automatic 18% gratuity on parties of 6+. Please make sure if you use this establishment, you are aware of that, because it was not made clear to us. Finally, one of our friends decided to pay the bill for all the people in our party and was assured that the few of us that had already paid would have our credit cards reimbursed. This did not happen, and I have contacted management at the restaurant regarding the missing credit; I have made MULTIPLE phone calls with conversation occurring with FOUR (yes, 4) different individuals who each promised to resolve the issue. I was promised return calls that have not been made as stated to me and my account has still not been given a credit for the charge; therefore, the restaurant has received DOUBLE PAYMENT for my meal and now somewhere in the 30+% of a tip on service that was nearly nonexistent. One of two things is occurring here - either the staff has lied not only to me, but also to the friend who paid the bill for all of us (and they have indeed lied as I was to get a return call this morning at 1100 that did not happen and when I called them a little before noon I was told I would receive a return call within the hour - I'm no rocket scientist but that would have been by 1 pm. We are approaching 5 pm now and I have still not received a call) ...or they are totally incompetent and cannot process a transaction appropriately. Either way, any of these reasons is justification for not dining at this establishment. You have been warned. read more
