My high school teacher referred to this paper as the "daily manure." I always thought he was a bit harsh with words but I can't recommend this paper either. I like newspapers - at this point with the internet they are almost a novelty item... plus when your finished reading them you can stuff them at the bottom of your bird or bunny cage. Negative 1 star. It's personal. When I was a child we were below poverty line. The Daily Review thought it was good news to put our run down home on the Front page of the paper. With headlines that read, "The Eyesore Of Town".l I remember going to school and many of the children in school made fun of us for this. This paper decided to shame us for being poor. I grew up reading this paper. Every year I pay for the entire year up front. The last few years have been horrible. No Monday paper is available which sucks. After having a ton of days where the paper never showed up, I decided to go with just a Sunday paper and scaled back my service. Well that has not gone well either. My paper has been in bushes or on grass which means the paper is soaked wet and has to be tossed in trash. 3 out of last 4 weeks no paper at all and the week it did come, it landed in the grass with sprinklers on. I called the automated system to report no paper and it assured me one would be delivered. I got a live person on and he also said the paper will be at my house around 11am. Then he offered me a free month of papers. I will be asking for my refund tomorrow. Hire some people that want to take care of the few customers you have left. Delivery and phone operators are crucial to your business. Only a select few people use your service. Learn to take care of them. read more

I have subscribed to The Daily Review for most of my life. I've put up with the changes as a sign of the times, low readership is directly correlated with bad service! And, I don't mean the newspaper delivery! I mean their product, the newspaper itself. I am talking about, going from paying $20.00 a year, to $85 to $45 a year. I think they just make-up a number! Also, just try and cancel the paper, the lady on the phone was uncooperative, and charged me, and extra $5.19, when I insisted on canceling. When I called again to complain, I was told the extra charge was going to collections. Everyone knows, you pay upfront for a year, so I don't get the extra charge? I told her, I was going on YELP! Today (March 16th, 2012) 2 months later, i called them and told them i have not received my refund and they said (almost like a scripted robot) that it was an error on their part and it will be processed today. The guy said so without looking at any details or notes or anything, so i'm thinking the first call you make they don't send a check and hope you forget about the refund. My daughter signed me up for 3 day a week delivery which included Sunday. The Review had a booth at an A's game - she rec'd a cute A's backpack, I believe.. This was July or August. Let's just say August to be generous. Let's be clear: it was meant as a gift. I did not decide on subscribing. The Daily Review has a long history of either 1. never reporting Hayward news or 2. distorting Hayward news. They had a fun columnist once-he's been gone for years- Friday, October 25, 2013 a postcard arrived thanking her for her most recent payment.. I emailed, told them I had never rec'd even 1 copy. When she dropped by, she informed me that they hadn't even been able to get the billing right & had been overbilling her this entire time. Sunday, October 27th, after much emailing between DR Customer Service Rep 'Ashley' & myself, I rec'd the only - ONLY - newspaper rec'd to date. I emailed her last night to remind her that actually I am to receive their paper THREE days a week. It is now Sunday, November 3, 2013, 8:22am. I have sent another email. The address across the street - one digit different than mine - AGAIN has a newpaper sitting on their lawn. I, on the otherhand, AGAIN have nothing. NADA. ZIP. ZED. ZILCH. I have now decided that this is entirely too much trouble for a crossword puzzle. ANDdddd: 8:43am. Nothing. If you're at an A's game next year, DO NOT stop by the table for the cute freebie. Was charged for subscription soon after signing up, but did not receive it until 1 week after I saw charge on credit card bill and placed a call to customer service to ask them to actually begin delivering the newspaper. 2. Paper started to be delivered every other day. Called customer service and was told that these days would be added to my credit along with the first week. 3. When I called customer service to report a missing Saturday paper, one was later delivered, being thrown over my fence and hitting me in the head. Funny but sad. 4. 3 weeks after paper subscription started, I received alternating Wall Street Journals. Called customer service. 5. I have not received a full 6 day week's worth of papers, right or wrong brand, since I started in May. 6. Customer service keeps telling me that I have credit every time I call, yet I get billed the same time every month, which amounts to no credits that I can see. 7. June 27, 2013, I called customer service (510-887-7323) to place a vacation hold on my service from June 29 through July 5, 2013, only to find out later that the paper was nevertheless delivered every day that I was gone. I also do not live in the finest neighborhood, so I don't appreciate the delivery person advertising my absence even after I went through the trouble of calling to stop service. 8. Today, I called customer service and asked to speak to a supervisor. Instead of being connected to one, I was grilled as to the reason, then left on hold for 30 minutes as I sit here at work. Do not get a subscription from anything from the alameda news group. I ordered the paper from someone at flea market about 5 months ago and have yet to receive one paper. I get calls all the time asking how were doing and when I tell them I haven't recieved a paper yet they give me another number to call and they tell me they can't help me. I called customer service about 2 months ago and cancelled and asked for a credit. They said ok. I have not received a credit and they keep taking out money. A shame because I used to love the daily review that's the only reason why I set up a subscription. read more

Paid to start service and then I received a bill stating that I have never paid. After a phone call to Customer Service I was told that they knew I had already paid but if I wanted to pay again that it was good for them. That did not go over well. However, the other problem was that to date they still have not actually delivered a paper. Terrible service and I am done with the Daily Review. Last year paid $20 for the Thursday, Friday, & Sunday paper. Never received a paper. This year, thinking it change and the guy promised me that I would get a paper, paid another $20 for a year worth of Sunday only and I have received my paper. This was April 2013. Now in July 2013, paper stopped because of some account created last year in which I did not received any papers. Now I have to pay $9.66 to activate the account to be current. So in all, I paid $49.66 for 4 months of paper. This is ridiculous and stupid. Customer service is no help at all. They only go by the computer system instead of going through actual documents. Terrible terrible customer service with billing. My moms paper was stopped because of non-payment. They received payment and did not post the payment to her account. They then required that my mom go get a copy of the check from her bank and email it to them. She is elderly and does not have any technical capabilities so she drove to my house in another city to have me do it. I scanned it and emailed it only to receive a reply back a week later that repeated all of the non payment information a second time even though the cancelled check was attached. I called and was asked to resend it. I am beyond frustrated with this company. Time to get mom a tablet and wi-fi. read more

I was a a subscriber for years. I quit the paper after I was fed up with the slanted nonsensical style. Local reporting is often a social programming content of what the editors think we should believe. The paper has far more advertisement than what they think passes for news. Almost without exception, the circulation department bills prematurely. They frequently overcharged me and seemed to think it was funny. It took a great deal of my time to straighten out ridiculous mistakes and they never seemed to know when the first paper was delivered. I soon learned they needed to be watched. I have been a subscriber for years. My paper hadn't been delivered for over a month. After phone calls and research we found that my neighbor has been receiving my newspaper because there is a new delivery person. I called again on September 16 to talk about the problem They said that since my account had expired (and my year subscription) on September 14 they couldn't help me. They said that they would love to renew with me and I could pay now and then we could talk about adding the month. So apparently they think that this is not their mistake. What??? I am not asking for anything that I haven't paid for. I also explained that I did not want to renew over the phone. There is a gentleman that does subscriptions at my local farmers market, and I want him to get the credit. It saddens me that with the internet encroaching on the newspaper business and my wanting to renew if they would put things right, that they didn't want to work with me. After being a long term customer for over 30 years (first with the Daily Review, then the East Bay Times), I have terminated my relationship with this newspaper as of today. I originally cancelled my weekly subscription because I would have to call 2-3 times a month for missed papers until finally I switched to Sunday only. In 8 weeks, I have received 2 papers. Numerous calls and complaints by emails gets you promises that the carrier and distribution manager will be notified. Nothing changes. They won't let you speak with a manager or anyone in charge, and requests for a call back for someone in charge gets you nothing. The paper itself is way too biased with no balance, and half of every page is ads. So don't waste your money or time on this piece of garbage. They don't care about their customers and they don't care if you complain. No wonder newspapers are failing. read more

We loved being busy and having fun, then rolling out the backdoor at quitting time and running to Buffalo Bills for a drink and some snacks. I'm greatly upset My mom has been a customer for a long time and has had some issues with the runner who does her papers sometimes she gets them or sometimes that person doesn't throw them even close to were are house is but lately the person has been throwing them and hitting my moms van well today I'm washing the cars and see that there is a huge crack on the windshield that wasn't there yesterday my mom always calls and complains to them how the person has hit her van and even has a dent on the top of the van but this takes the cake and we have been trying to call the company but of course can't get any one and you would think they would have a voice mail but they don't she is highly upset and this is going to be very expensive to fix. In reading over several reviews I'd like to address some of the issues raised here. I've been in circulation (paper carrier) for over 25 years, both here in the Bay Area, and Southern California. The Christmas card you receive from the carrier each year is provided so you may tip if you wish. Sadly, most Newspaper Dealers contracted by the paper itself do not pass along any tips you may be adding to your bill. I recommend you not tip the carrier this way, but instead via the Christmas card provided. Or not. Obviously, tips are optional. But, I can assure you, tips are tremendously appreciated, as they help in defraying the high cost of wear and tear on our cars. Now, as far as carriers go, it's a mixed bag. The industry is filled with notoriously salty, lazy, hurried, overworked, you name it, carriers. Personally, I've always taken pride in my paper placement. In this regard, a Christmas tip may go a long way in giving the carrier incentive. I'm not saying this is right. Most newspapers contract delivery to people called Dealers, who then themselves subcontract to the actual carriers. I know from experience many of these Dealers are jerks. I don't know why. They have terrible customer service skills and they keep all tips customers add to their bills. I recommend bypassing a Dealer if you can, and somehow get someone at the actual newspaper. If you've been accidentally receiving the Wall Street Journal, this means your carrier works for two newspaper delivery companies, and is simply misdelivering your paper. Where I currently work, we are responsible for the delivery of up to five different newspapers--it's quite easy mixing them up in a darkened car. I hope this helps. Cancelled our newspaper today. After taking the paper forever. My husband recently disabled but we had ALWAYS had our newspaper porched even before his illness. The last year I've tried unsuccessfully to get our new carrier to porch our paper. The last few months our Carrie has chosen to not even make the driveway. It's tossed on the sidewalk in front of our driveway. I've called too many times to complain and nothing changes. Finally called yesterday to cancel & that was taken care of even though we are paid up for another few weeks. I find it comical that we can't get our request for better service done after months of calls & texts yet one call to cancel & no newspaper the very next day. My feeling is the Daily Review doesn't seem to care if their subscriptions go down. Don't they realize no customers no jobs fir them. After emailing the finance director, I finally received a message from Mark in finance who told me that the newspaper updated their accounting system 2 years ago and everyone received new account numbers. And they gave someone else my old account number. That is where my payments have been being posted to. He left a call back number, but I still had to go thru everything with the lady that answered. The second time a service rep named Mike was extremely rude. He said don't get radical you will get it when the carrier is through with his route. Apparently the carrier is still delivering? While it took several calls and a couple of webstie feedback submissions, The Daily Review finally got through to the carrier to deliver the paper on my mothers porch instead of the middle of the drive way. Customer advocate Mayra Cerna came through and got us results. Mom is 93 years old with a bad leg and uses a cane, and getting up and down the porch was a trial. Ok, so I keep getting billed. I pay the bill wih my credit card and then I get a call a few weeks later for another billing that appears to be unrelated to the first billing. I have paid at least 3 times and the Review has my account credited with only one payment since January. I called the 800 number to cancel my subscription. I thought I was calling a business office but in the background there is a baby crying. I have taken the Review on and off for years but I no longer care to do business with a company that does not have solid business practices. I have better things to do with my $$$ than paying for what appears to be multiple subscriptions. Their accounting system is not credible. read more

I cannot understand why this business is still in business. They have horrible customer service. I had left work a little early and walked 5 blocks from Downtown Hayward Bart so I can get there before they closed and when I arrived I discovered the address listed here on Yelp in incorrect. The business is no longer doing business at this address so I called to find out where they are located now and the lady kept saying we haven't been at that location for approx. 3 yrs. Ok...well! I'm passed that now I'm just trying to figure out how to get to the current location and if it's walking distances. She's now asking what business I wanted to handle and when it needs to be handled. At this point I've very annoyed because I just need to get there and after all the questioning she then tells me she's not even in Hayward and she doesn't know where or how to get to the location and informed me of the hours of operation on Fridays 10-3. But she would transfer me to someone to help me ( it's nearly 5:00pm). And what would be the point of that if the office closed 2 hours ago? Unbelievable! Now I will look for another local paper to publish with. Thanks for Nothing Hayward Daily Reviews. I should have followed my first mind when reading all the negative reviews posted with Yelp. For a while I was receiving superb service. It was wonderful getting up at 6:30 and finding my paper(s) waiting for me i the driveway with bags on them when needed. I got really spoiled. And NOW things are not going well. I don't know if the dealer changed delivery people, or what, but now my paper has not been getting to me by the time I leave the house at 8:30 and as far as I am concerned a late paper equals no paper because I have no time to enjoy the paper at the end of the day. I am far too busy with chores and taking care of members of my family to sit and and enjoy my paper. So if this doesn't clear up within a few days, I am ditching it. I have spoken to two really polite customer service reps, Ashley on Wed. and Whitney on Thursday. Hopefully tomorrow my paper will appear on time! read more

My wife and I are both disabled. I am 100% disabled veteran. On many occasions our papers are under our van parked in the driveway. There is only this van that is parked there and the other part of the driveway is wide open, yet the delivery person manages to put the papers in the middle of the van. We have to move the van in order to retrieve the paper. Sometime ago they stopped delivering the Monday papers. It took me awhile to get used to not having the papers on Mondays. I just don't read all the Sunday papers and save the rest for Monday. Yesterday, Tuesday, we did not receive our papers and I called all the numbers I have and I keep getting recordings. Finally, a recording came on and got the information about my missing papers and it said it will be delivered promptly. I waited all day and it never arrived. I called the circulation department this morning and I was told that I would get credit for missed papers. I told the man I don't want or need the credit. I want my papers. I was told that yesterdays papers were no longer available. I told him that Tuesdays are where the sales for the week are in and I depend my weekly shopping based on what is on sale that week. I am sure that the advertisers would like to get this information to as many subscribers as possible. Who knows how many people didn't get their papers yesterday and are not able to look at the weekly ads. The businesses who pay for this service should make sure their ads are being delivered. I know this is going to happen again and I wish there is another newspaper I can subscribe in my area. This newspaper do not care about the loyal customers (over 40 years). No wonder so many papers are shutting down. read more

The service from The Daily Review is horrible. Papers are not delivered on time. Vacation stops are ignored telegraphing you are away as newspapers sit on the driveway. Management obviously does not care as the poor practices continue. If that was all not bad enough, their accounting services cannot even track when I have paid for an entire year. This is why people have quit receiving a newspaper, and the industry is rapidly contracting! read more

I am watching a house for a friend who is on vacation. He put a vacation hold on his newspaper. So far, it has been delivered everyday, one week, since he left. I have called 3 times and they a record of it being placed on vacation hold. The third time I called I was told it would be elevated to a higher level. It is still being delivered! This is the second time this person has stopped the paper for a vacation and I have had to call more than once to get it stopped. read more

The Hayward Daily Review is a nice newspaper to receive somewhat regularly every morning (except Monday*) and I very rarely fail to receive my home delivery when expected. The issue that has caused me to give less that a super rating to this publication is the Senior/Community Center delivery on Monday. Apparently, it is not commonly known among the phone assistance staff that a promise was made when the Monday home deliveries were ended that the Senior Centers in Alameda County would be receiving some papers (usually Valley publication) on Mondays. Those centers in Hayward and Castro Valley do sometimes receive a bundle of Monday papers early in the day. This is appreciated by the regular visitors to the centers. Today the papers did not arrive at either Hayward or Castro Valley. That means that the carrier who should have left them failed to do it. Recently a person from Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley's office called to check this out for us and was given the line about no papers coming to Alameda County residents on Monday. That Hayward Daily Review contact apparently does not know about the original promise. So that we do not need to keep educating the employees of the publication regarding the agreement originally made by the company, we are requesting the name of the person we should be contacting regarding delivery interruptions at Alameda County Senior/Community Centers. read more

Sadly, I write today being forced to end my 30 year relationship with the Daily Review. For 30 years I got excellent delivery service. We got a new carrier in Aug so that shouldn't be the issue. All this changed Thanksgiving day when I had no paper. I get the paper Th, Fr & Su only. I called, was promised one, never got. Friday, no paper, brought another one. Sun, no paper, called brought another one. On the 30th I talked with a supervisor who promised to get the problem solved. She did (but for only 2 days). After not getting a paper Dec 6th, I called a supervisor on the 7th & she promised they would send out a Sunday paper today (Monday on a non delivery day). This was a promise never fulfilled. On wed the 9th I went down to the office in Hayward and spoke with the very nice gal there. She cant help me, as circulation is in Dublin, but she did make a call. At least I found out that their computer actually keeps track of complaints so they see all the entries. (You would think the system should automatically notify a high up after this many complaints). I was told to contact Dan Smith, the head of circulation as he is the only one who can take care of the problem. He never called back (would obviously rather be out playing golf). I actually got a paper Dec 10, 11 and 13th (amazing). Dec 17th, again, no paper. (an hour later found it was delivered to my neighbor instead). A replacement was brought. Today (18th) I don't have a paper (again-as usual). So now I have no alternative but to cancel. Accountability is their main problem. They cant even tell me who I spoke to an hour ago when I found it was at my neighbors and called back. Obviously the carrier missing a house is NOT the one who has to make a re-delivery. if the carrier had to come back every day they should be able to figure out when and who gets a paper. District managers apparently are a waste of money. I must say though, through all this I have always received polite and courteous service, unlike others apparently have not. So sadly, I bid adios to my paper. Apparently if you start having delivery problems, they are incapable of solving them, just cancelling seems to be the only alternative. Even our government is run better than the Daily Review. Its a sad world we live in. read more

I enjoy reading the morning paper. I've been a customer for almost 15 years. I have a recurring problem with the paper being thrown under my car. I've called Ang/The Daily Review numerous times. Each time I call I get the "we'll make sure this is corrected" speech and yet it continues to be a problem. I'm an old lady. I can't get under the car to get the paper. My choices are either move my car to retrieve the paper or try to get it out with a rake. I don't want to cancel the paper. I called this morning and asked how much the daily paper costs. I guess to buy it at a store it costs $1.50. At the rate I'm presently paying, its $.33 a day. I've told them for every day it gets tossed under the car, I'm deducting that amount from the monthly bill. Even though I've signed up for automatic billing, I will deduct that amount via my bank. My room-mate tried talking to the delivery person one morning. Unfortunately, the person did not speak English. Go figure. read more
