One of the better consequences of the pandemic was discovering hiking trails I wouldn't have walked otherwise. The Hayward Regional Shoreline was one such find (review: https://yelp.to/cGXuJmYDAm), and there's quite a network of walkways and footbridges in the wetlands next to the bay. At the southern end of the shoreline trail next to Hwy 92 is this surprisingly expansive educational center. While it's available to local schools for field trips, the rest of us can only visit on Fridays and Saturdays 11AM-3PM. Lucky me, I was here at the right time to get up close and personal with the local fauna. Aquatic life was housed in large fish tanks, while waterfowl were apparently stuffed in mid-flight. I'm constantly surprised by all the great and accesible educational and recreational facilities that Hayward has, and the Hayward Shoreline center is no exception. We attended a children's story time event here Sunday morning. Yes the facility is older, but it definitely gives the nostalgic science classroom/science camp vibes from primary school days. The ranger/staff at the facility was super nice and welcoming and the actual story room itself was well maintained with plenty of seating. After the story we had a water coloring activity which the kids loved. We were able to wander the facility afterwards. There were some nice pieces of art in the atrium/entrance area and there was a room for local species/live specimens. There is also a nice trail which we walked, saw plenty of birds with our short hike, no shade though so bring something for shade during the summer. Looks like they have regular events for kids and school field trips as well. We will certainly be back for other events. read more

Quick take: discovered the trail I discovered this area during the pandemic. Haven't bern buy in awhile. This is the first time I visited and the interpretive center was open. There's a really nice staff member that greets everyone that is visiting. A lot of beautiful paintings. Also a habitat room with some live tanks. INTRODUCTION. Hayward Regional Shoreline includes sloughs, marshes, mud flats, and a rocky shoreline. The word "slough" is pronounced like this: SLOO. In 1854, John Johnson built levees here for the first salt-production facility in the San Francisco Bay area. The salt factory ruins can be viewed by crossing the long footbridge over Highway 92 near the interpretive center. The Interpretive Center and the nearby hiking paths are great places for taking children, teens, and adults, where the goal is to learn a little bit about ecology, botany, zoology, and about the Bay Area's history. MY PHOTOGRAPHS. My photos are of the mudflats located to the north and west of the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. The photos show pickleweed, which is colored bright red, thick clusters of spartina growing in the mud, industrial equipment that was once used for operating the ponds (ponds once used for collecting salt), and weird formations in the dried earth that resemble volcano craters. Also shown is a photo of me, wearing my University of Wisconsin shirt. BIRDS AND OTHER ANIMALS. Birdwatchers will enjoy their hobby in the grounds near the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. Birds that can be seen in this area include, Canadian geese, Snow geese, Northern Pintail, Mallard, Marbled Godwit, American Avocet, Sandpipers, Seagulls, Crows, Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, Black Necked Stilt, Clark's Grebe, and Northern Harrier. Snails and tiny crabs also live here. The salt water harvest mouse (SWHM) lives only in coastal salt marshes. This mouse is naturally adapted to the environment of salt marshes that are dominated by pickleweed. In other environments, this mouse cannot survive. The SWHM has a high ability to drink and to survive on salty water. PICKLEWEED AND OTHER SALT-TOLERANT PLANTS. The most common plant found in the areas near Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is pickleweed, which grows only in salt marshes. The leaves of this plant look like a string of tiny pickles that are attached, end-to-end, to each other. Cordgrass occupies the lower land areas, which are submerged for longer periods of time. Cordgrass (Spartina foliosa) is native to the San Francisco Bay, but most of the cordgrass growing on the Hayward shoreline these days is an eastern species (Spartina alterniflora). The types of plants that grow in various locations in or near a salt marsh depend on the salinity (concentration of salt) and depends on inundation (exposure to incoming water from freshwater tides). At lower elevations where higher salt levels occur, Spartina foliosa, fat hen (Atriplex prostrata), alkali bulrush, alkali heath (Frankenia salina), salt grass (Distichlis spicata), grow in marshes along with pickleweed. Coming from Walnut Creek, I have no shortage of amazing trails right in my own backyard. However, a trail...by the water....with shore bird watching??? Now that is a novelty!!! I had so much fun on a Sunday afternoon along the Hayward Regional Shoreline. My boyfriend and I began our journey at the Interpretive Center where there was plenty of parking, trail maps and rangers to assist. The trail itself is nearly impossible to get lost on and features a variety of birds, small mammals and even snakes (yikes, I nearly stepped on two past the Cogswell Marsh!) It's windy and very open, so hats, sunscreen, lip balm and a hoodie are a must. The trail is flat but winds right up along the bay, over various foot bridges and sometimes veers a bit more inland with varying shore and marsh birds. Along our journey we saw Least Terns (a shorebird that from a distance looks a bit like a smaller seagull but with much prettier feathers), snowy plovers, a white egret, ducks, geese, squirrels scurring in and out of the rocks as well as a lone jack rabbit that I got to spend some time viewing before he hopped off. We brought binoculars so had spectacular views from near and far. Walking from the Interpretive Center up to Hayward Landing and then back took us a bit over 2 hours-but that includes many stops along the way. It's very peaceful and offers a unique perspective of the bay. We had views of Mt. Diablo to the east, the San Mateo Bridge, and city scapes of both Oakland and San Francisco. The trail wasn't super crowded but still felt safe. This time of year, during the lovely East Bay spring, there is plenty of greenery and some wildflowers to add pops of color along the way. If I lived nearby I can see this being a regular walking spot. It's great for a basic walk, with the added bonus of bay views, wildlife and interesting placards along the way describing the birds and other features of the shoreline. Great for kids, as it's an easy "hike" and a treasure trove for all bird lovers out there! read more

I come here all the time... Today I walked my fit bit out :) Ive been here so many times for many years. I remember when the tides pretty much remained high enough to splash up on the paved and unpaved walking/running ways. Its rare the water gets so high in recent years. From what I see today it looks like there was a higher than usual tide...I missed the high tides. Either way its a great place to walk, jog, or run. Its not too many people at a time out here, which is always good. I didnt give 5 stars because the people leaving their animal feces on or around the walk ways is increasing, and the smell today was rancid in areas...may those who leave shit, step in shit. Lol Id recommend this spot for a quick/lengthy, tranquil getaway, and in the summer times you can usually catch a nice breeze, amazing sunsets, and clear views of the San Mateo bridge, San Francisco and the Port of Oakland. read more

The Hayward Shoreline is a nice place to go for a walk along the shoreline overlooking the bay and the wildlife marsh areas. The Interpretive Center is always a good visit to see the wildlife art or photography exhibits that is displayed there and changes every few months. Also very interesting in the center is seeing some of the native wildlife creatures in fish tanks or reptile cages. The staff is friendly and helpful on answering questions about the shoreline or the wildlife that lives here. read more

Just a few minutes into our guided tour I remember some volunteer nonchalantly picking up a piece of animal crap and shredding it in her hands. No, she wasn't crazy she was just really into the environment and nature and animals and her job. She called the animal crap "scat" and I guess that gave her both permission and a green light in doing as she wished with it. My first visit here was in 1992 as a second grader on a school field trip. 30 little 8 year olds just watched this lady enthusiastically fondling and digging in the animal crap. We looked in horror at our dignified, well dressed school teacher and she was equally surprised and was of no help in offering us any comfort. The volunteer tour guide then started describing what she found in the "scat" or animal droppings. Half digested seeds, I think some fur. Then she came up with possible animals that might have left the droppings behind based on the diet. Wonderful. No matter what kind of fancy names she called the crap it was still crap to me. The tour went on of the salt marsh and colors and plants and birds. Invasive greens and bad non native stuff. Really educational. Too educational. Needless to say this field trip and that volunteer - enthusiastic - biology lady left a lasting memory for all of us school kids. read more

The Hayward Area Recreation department scores again with this interesting interruptive center. When you travel over the San Mateo Bridge it is hard to miss this building on stilts at the edge of bay. It's only open in the weekends and it is small. They do have very interesting art shows. I like to stop here when I walk along the bay trail in Hayward. If you stop in do sign the guest book, it proves to the rec. department that people to come here. read more

San Francisco Bay Trail - Hayward Portion I drove by this area when I go to work everyday, always curious about this location. Driven by my curiosity, I finally went there for a self discovery walk. This place is awesome for biking, but they don't allow dog. The trail is flat and long, and very quiet. You will see goose, duck, ground squirrel, and swallow. I highly recommend to go there early morning when the bay is calm. it's less breeze. Water, wind breaker and umbrella/hat are good items to bring. Go see this, most people that live in the area usually just drive by. We had a birthday party for a 4 year old and it was a hit, the kids got to see exhibits, the docents were very patient and even took the kids out to the marsh land to see the little creatures and get a little dirty. My son and I had an excellent time at this month's Toddler Ramble. It was our first time to the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. Although there isn't much to see if just dropping by, the programs offered are where it's at. Anne was a great instructor - gentle and engaging with the kids. They learned a bit, and then got to do a fun craft. After, we all went and explored the marsh. My son was also fascinated with the aquarium, enjoyed "fishing", and explored the classroom eagerly. read more

Yeeeeahhh.....they should put more signs up. We accidentally brought the pup to the no dog side even though we saw the sign that said no dogs cause we had no freaking clue what was going on. I think someone told on us and so the shoreline ranger (ha!) drove over in his truck to yell at us and tell us we'd pay a lot of money for breaking the rules. He continued to talk as I said it was an accident and asked how do you get over to the !#%!^^#$%# dog friendly side?!?! It was around the corner. It's not like Bentley could catch those massive rabbits/hares! Twanyways, the walk was real nice besides the heaving coming from my fat body and the sound of my joints crushing beneath the girth that is known as myself. It was cold, but bearable. Hubby wanted to do a short hike today 1/1/08 for the New Year so he picked Hayward Regional Shoreline. It's off Clawiter on Breakwater Ave in Hayward. You can see the Hayward Regional Shoreline every time you head toward the San Mateo Bridge. The Hayward Regional Shoreline Interpretive Center is closed on Tues so we couldn't go inside. I wanted to enroll my little one in a summer camp but we had never visited. We arrived on a weekday afternoon to find the doors closed. Though they are only open for appointments, one of the staff members let us into the center, gave us a tour and explained the Bay Shrimps camp. I knew it was a go when my daughter declared, "I like my new school!" As a Bay Shrimp, my daughter got to explore the trails, learn about our local shoreline wildlife, build her own solar nightlight, and play in the mud. The staff was professional and clearly had great patience in working with kids in preschool and kindergarten. We're looking forward to many camps and visits in the future. read more

The Shoreline is a perfect place if you want to get away from the city for a nice walk. It's a really close drive or bike ride from the Southland Shopping Mall. The trail is really flat, so there really isn't any hiking. Near the end there's a hill, but it's not very steep. The trail is about 3.5 one way, adding up to 7 miles total. The place doesn't seem that big at first, but after walking awhile you'll realize it's a pretty big space. There isn't a lot of options to go "off-road". You might be able to near the shoreline, yet it gets rocky and muddy. The sights and sounds are great. You'll most likely come across different varieties of winged animals like ducks, geese, and water birds. They often fly in groups or zig zag like crazy. You'll really be at the lip of the shore. Water smothers the rocks to create a really relaxing sound. There is a bench right near the lip of the shore that provides a great view. Unfortunately this is about the only seating in the park. Even though you're close to the freeway, so worry about the noise of the traffic. As soon as you walk a half mile, you'll forget you were even in your car. The trail has two circles within itself, allowing you to take different routes. The beginning and end of the trail are the same, so you can't really get lost. There is a bridge at one part in the park, but it's safely railed. The office of the park has your typically native reserve info. I haven't been in here in ages and they always seem closed. There are a few signs here talking about the natural surroundings so don't expect a wealth of information. NO FISHING HERE BECAUSE OF POLLUTION ___ If you want a nice even stroll or bike ride on a pebbly trail, this is your trail. read more

I think this is really a gem for hayward I cant believe that i didnt discover this sooner. I thought that this was such a super easy walk or run. Mostly flat but there are some small hills you can run up to and loops around to go back down back to the trail. There are some benches along the way when you feel like just soakin in the shoreline beauty. Theres so much wildlife in here. You can see them hanging out in the marshes, the levees, and the shoreline. Its such a pretty sight to just explore it. When you go up keep walking along the shoreline, you can definitely see the bay bridge from here! I think it's really amazing. The map tells you that you can walk as far as 8 miles... All the way to san leandro. Definitely check out the interpretive center. It's staffed by a friendly and knowledgeable ranger. Theres maps and bathrooms inside there. I heard they have fun events and activities for the little kiddos there. When i went, they had some picture exhibit which was interesting. The ranger also sometimes gives guided hikes to groups so i think thats really cool. I really like this place. The only thing im bummed about is that you cant bring your dogs here :( probably to protect the wildlife in there. read more

I loved this place! It has long trails and convenient benches to rest. It is clean and quiet space with amazing views. The breeze of the bay is delicious when you are starting to sweat! There was a flock of docks in the San Leandro Creek, squirrels wandering around everywhere, butterflies, etc. I can't wait to go back. Went jogging here this morning and it reminded me of the marshes from when I lived in South Carolina. There were all kinds of wildlife and when I got there, I had the place to myself. I didn't realize how much I missed that subtle but unique smell of salty marsh. I'm not an ornithologist (yep, bet you don't hear that one very much) but it was fun watching a few of the white marsh birds duke it out. I'm telling you, these birds have some serious space issues. If you're into bird watching, this is definitely the place to go. There were all kinds. I even saw a few hummingbirds flitting around the industrial park next door. The trail itself is gravel and completely flat so it's good for running, biking, walking, you name it. The industrial park, overhanging power lines, and nearby highway bothered me at first but the amalgamation of nature preserve meets industrial park kind of works. This is a great little get-away from the urban sprawl of Hayward. Check it out! read more

There are wetlands of vital ecological importance in Hayward. Originally, the marshlands on the shores of Hayward were used for salt production starting in the 1850s. Salt was a pretty big deal back then as it was used for silver mining and food preservation. Apparently, Hayward was one of the biggest producer's of salt in the world and hauled out 17,000 tons of salt at its prime (raked by hand) to be milled at local mills. However, once the salt rush passed, the area was used as a place to dump waste and hunt birds. Over time, the San Francisco Bay was estimated to have lost 85% of its wetlands due to development. People got their act together in the 1970s to figure out how to preserve the unique wetlands; in 1986 the Hayward Interpretive Center was opened. Nowadays, it is a really great place to for people to learn about the Bay Area ecosystem and explore the salt ponds and wetlands. Inside the center, there's clean restrooms, art exhibits, some aquariums, lots of things for kids to get hands-on with, and some live animals (see the pic of snake feeding I posted). The real reason to come here is to walk along the Bay and see many different kinds of shorebirds; I read that there were over 200 species around the area. I also read about some sort of endangered salt harvest mouse. There are nice views of the bay with some bridges to cross too. One can still see windmills scattered about--they were once used to pump and funnel water between ponds to aid in evaporation for salt harvesting. I like coming here because it's so close to my current stomping grounds of San Mateo and Hayward and is excellent for jogging due to the loops one can make with the various trails. read more

This place is such a hidden little gem! A few years ago we came for a birthday party and recently went back just for fun. My kids (8.5 and 4.5) had a great time. The building itself only has a small room for kids, which has some marine life, reptiles, books, etc. But the real treat is exploring the surrounding marshlands. Pack a lunch, bring rain boots, fishing nets or small shovels (like the sand toy ones) and see what you find in the shallow waters off the trail! We found so many sea snails this time (and last time we found crab exoskeletons!). We came on our own and spent about 2.5 hours here. Parking and entrance is free (there is a donation box by the front door if you would like to support them). The employee working that day was so sweet to my kids and patiently answered all their questions. We will definitely be back! read more

Decided to come here quickly and check this place out. It was somewhat quiet and my puppy loved running around this area. The climate was cool and a bit windy when I came which was an ideal weather. It reminded me of Chicago since I was originally from there. It's an okay place to also walk around and take pictures. It's very relaxing here. This area also had a good parking lot. There was enough space for everyone and it wasn't that crowded when I went. read more

Take only Pictures, leave only footprints. This is a really cool spot that I've ridden by on my bike tons of times, but I have never stopped. It was actually post by a guy on Instagram that directed me here, I didn't know that Hayward had a glass beach. Its a really cool spot, and you can roam around and look at the ruins of the old ferry terminal that was used to move salt and people back and forth from San Francisco in the 1850s. Most of the glass here is very old. This is why H.A.R.D. has posted a "no collecting" sign. with a little picture of a guy with a shovel and bucket with a circle and a line though it. Do not use this glass for your art projects, or try to gather the glass by the bag full. It's people like that who try to take our history from us that really tick me off. If you see someone taking glass, be like "hey, that's not cool" and if they appear to be gathering the glass in an industrial manner for whatever project they are working on, feel free to give the park ranger a heads up by calling the interpretative center down the road, and they'll send someone out. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. Not much has changed over the years. There are lots of flat, easy trials for walking or cycling. The interpretive center may be small and the displays rather old, but it's a great place for kids. They don't seem to notice those details, anyway. The center hosts a variety of classes for different age groups and interests: fishing, crafts, guided walks, clean up days, etc. Most of them are free. You can't beat that! read more

Fantabulous walking trail - you can see the highway but you can't hear the traffic. You can see the airplanes coming into SFO and OAK but you won't get motion sickness. You can see SF but you can't smell the sewers. You will hear bird chirping and waves licking the shore, you will hear your feet crunching the gravel and your partner's feet syncing in unison. You will feel the breeze pushing you forward, or pushing against you as you plod along the Bay Trail. You will smell the salt of the salt fields, the smell of the ocean amplified. Glorious. On the weekends the building is open. Some weekend days they feed the tiny sharks. Nothing is more peaceful than a mini-shark ripping apart some weird slimy calamari-looking thing. read more

You've probably driven by thousands of time when approaching the San Mateo bridge. I'd bet you've even asked yourself what is that wooden building in the middle of the marsh near the San Mateo bridge approach. Well, that's the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center. We love this place because they offer classes and camp during summer and winter. My daughter just adores Ann, the naturalist at the center. Ann and others are patient with the kids, and truly cares about the surrounding habitat. You can also host birthday parties there at the center, and it's totally affordable compare to Super Franks or ChuckECheese's (sensory overload). Best of all, we can bring our own food and cake. read more

I went to the HRS by driving to the end of Winton Ave. Dog ARE allowed North of the Flood Channel. When Going down Winton, continue until you see the little building on the right and parking on the left. Don't go past here with your dogs. There will be a trail head before the building which states the park rules. Right now the paved path to the shoreline (about 1/2 mile) is pretty sparse. On the left is the flood channel, and on the right you can still see the heavy machine tracks from the job of covering up the dump. Once there is more vegetation on the knolls, it may be a nicer walk. The dogs seemed to have a good time- but they rarely don't. The shoreline itself is nice. And I oddly enjoyed looking at all the water polished broken glass. There wasn't really a good spot for the critters to enter the water, but I did not bring a towel so it was alright. I hope to make it back here in the fall and hopefully it will be a little more lush. read more

I like coming here with my dog on the weekends. There are two parts to the park, and only one of them allows dogs. Although it's a relatively simple looking area, it's still beautiful and I like that the trail is like a long, straight line. If you come during sunset, it's very pretty. If there aren't people around, I let my dog off leash to walk around, and she has a very good time. This is a nice park for getting out of the house and getting some fresh air and exercise. One pointer is that the park entrance is a bit hard to find. The first time I came here I got a bit lost. You have to keep going down Winton (past the industrial area), even after the street narrows. read more

I really wouldn't go back. I suppose how well a shoreline can be shored up has a lot to do with municipal and regional government funding. I can appreciate that there is a trail along the Bay that locals can walk or run along. That said, there is not much of a view, and there is really no theme or focal point along the shore - nothing like the Piers in San Francisco or Jack London vicinity in Oakland. Of course, it would be unfair to compare, but what might work is to build on the strengths of the rural, coastal view, cultivate the greenery somewhat more, emphasize wildlife areas a little more ... but again, these things all likely come down to funding. Could be lovely if there was not so much trash everywhere. This shoreline is so polluted that we could not even dig for seashells or see any cool wildlife because there was garbage all over. The trail itself is maintained and is good for biking or walking. It is quiet with views of the peninsula and San Fransisco. I contacted East Bay Regional Parks about the trash but the response I got was, well, uninterested. Too bad. If it were up to me, I'd put the convicts or the pan handlers who stand on corners begging to work cleaning up! read more

Love it here. Great place to walk, run, bike....and in some areas you can take your dogs. Can be a bit windy but a lot of sunshine. read more
