We decided to visit The Three Crowns after a recommendation from a friend. The setting is idyllic, with beautiful views over the village green next door and a quaint village. We ordered our food from the two course menu for just 15GBP per person, I had the gammon and fries - outstanding! However they make that sauce, delicious! I also ordered a Pimm's which was made extra strong and extra large after they discovered I live in America and don't get to experience it regularly. Well, another win purely by coincidence. On that sunny day, the huge garden was THE place to sit. Well, we had forgotten that in the West Sussex countryside, portions are a tad more generous than in London and the 2 boards came laden and groaning with food. I especially loved the seafood board with fresh large prawns, smoked salmon, poached fish and seafood salad. A spritz of lemon and you could imagine being a few miles down the road at the sea. Facilities are clean and the place is managed very well. Management leave you to get on with things yourself but they keep a close eye on things. As a nervous camper, I felt very safe there. The only thing to do on the doorstep is walking/hiking, but if you have a car there are lots of nearby attractions. The Limeburners pub does great, hearty food. Their salads are warm and filling and their roasts are good. Good, but not amazing. I was surprised to find salsa-covered courgettes in my roast dinner! Puddings are to die for. Try the gingersnap basket with strawberries and ginger ince-cream and the cherry-chocolate fondant. Good prices too. Average main is about £7. Reserve a table at peak times, though, as the locals swarm there.

The perfect lunch time meal. The food is hot and portions generous. Unlike some places The Five Bells serve cod - not halibut nor haddock. The fish is fresh and is paired with plenty of chips. I washed mine down with a half Shandy (I wanted to relive a childhood memory) then I tried a half pints of two of the pub's local beers. Dessert was a 10 year old Laphroig scotch. Very much a village pub, it has an excellent reputation for welcoming new people. I know this as I have been with my brother, who is from Thakeham nearby. A very small menu but impressive. I like the idea of take away Fish and Chips, which is very popular. Very nice place to stay for quiet weekend. Nearby is the Alexandro Bastedo Animal Santuary..well worth a visit!
