This park is a dog-walkers dream…read more There is a 2-mile loop that includes part of the mountain division trail that goes all the way around the park. There is water for your dog to jump into, and fields for him to run in. During the summer they have boat rentals. Along the walk is the Gambo Dam. There are a few bridges to cross as well. Trash is carry-in, carry-out but they do have a dog-potty bag station and a few port-a-potties. The park is very clean and well maintained. A nice swing set and picnic tables too!

So much so that if you say the word "walk" out loud, she will not rest until said walk has occurred. And, by not rest, I mean lots of bouncing around, hopping up on the couch to have her leash put on, whining - the whole nine yards. As such, we have walked many a places. The Westbrook River Walk is one of the best. While a big part of this is the convenience to our home, it is also just that it is a really nice walking path along the river and parks. The path, which alternates between wooden boardwalk and paved pathway, is perfect. The addition of the foot bridge crossing the river a couple years back was also really nice. And, there are several well positioned trash receptacles along the way, making for the clean up and deposit of her "waste" easy. All in all, this is the perfect post-work walk for my little four legged friend.

The waterfall at the one end is beautiful but unfortunately it is mostly blocked by the bridge! The majority of the walk goes behind softball and soccer fields so it isn't very scenic. I personally would just recommend driving to the end to see the River area and small falls and maybe walking elsewhere. For reference, all my photos are from the end of the walk closer to the falls!

The animals are very active on this trail so enjoy the squirrels, birds, and chipmunks! If you have 30 minutes this is definitely worth a try.

I always like finding trails that surprise me, and Mill Brook Preserve did just that. I can't…read morebelieve the number of times I've driven by the corner of Bridgton Rd (Route 302) and Methodist Rd and never realized there was a little pull-off for a few cars. This is where the northern trailhead is, and apparently there are three other trailheads: across the street from Willow Drive, down further Methodist, and on Perry Court! I feel like no matter which way you enter this 5ish mile trail system in Westbrook, you're going to experience and see something different. Which leads me to what I love and what I loathe about this trail: I love that it feels like it's hidden in plain sight, I loathe that it's not a loop (I'm not a fan of in-and-out trails, I just want one continuous walking path, y'know?). I'm not sure how deep I made it before turning around, but I know there are fish viewing ponds to the north and to the south... because, fun fact, Mill Brook Preserve is also the home to the largest annual migration of alewife fish from Casco Bay to Highland Lake (best viewing time is mid May to early June)! I appreciated how well marked the trail was (and how it followed/hugged the brook the whole time; who doesn't love being surrounded by water sounds and enormous trees?! yes, you can hear the traffic at times, but I found the running water and birdsong to be much louder), and how there were some more challenging spots. I'd like to come back and enter from the south next time!

I have never fished (ever!) and felt like I could ask any and all questions without any judgement. He was willing to demonstrate and walk us through every step of the way and multiple times at that. It was clear his goal was to create an enjoyable, memorable experience and he definitely stayed out a little later than planned to make sure we caught a Striper! And we did My boyfriend with some fishing experience and I with none were both so happy we did this. If you add anything to your to-do list while in the area, take a trip with Captain Carle!!!

Having done this twice now, I won't come back a third time. The novelty wore off upon our second…read moreouting, but I still think it's absolutely worth doing at least once! Some things still hold true a year later: 1. Scheduling, paying for, and signing the waiver for your adventure online is unbelievably easy. You can rent kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes for 2, 3, or 4 hours at a time (embarking between 9a and 3p. You can add a lesson before your rental, a cell phone dry bag, a dog life jacket, and a large dry bag all for an additional nominal fee. You can launch from Sebago Trails (side note: they have a really neat - and super secure - docking system/apparatus for you to get in and out of your vessel safely) or pick-up and take-away (something we haven't done, but - contrary to what I said above - *is* something we'd come back here for if that was an option for us)! 2. There's plenty of parking! Unfortunately: a) One of our kayaks was broken (which they told us about, but still put one of us in), and in the end we had to turn around after a little bit of paddling to swap it out. The kayaks aren't all the same brand or style, either, so where I was in something super sleek (that moved quickly through the water), my partner was in something much bulkier (that took a lot more work to paddle). b) The staff was so friendly and welcoming the first time! The second time, not so much. So, for us anyway, it's a bit hit or miss there. The SPTC map: a) The first time we came we kayaked Panther Run (a really mellow, lazy river inlet), portaged across the Mill Street Dam, kayaked all the way up Panther Pond, and ended at Hawthorne Beach where we swam and enjoyed snacks. It was a workout, but we saw so much wildlife and hardly saw other people. Such a peaceful, lowkey, lovely way to spend a day! b) The second time we came there had been no rain most of the summer. And that changed the Panther Run experience entirely (as there was barely any water): we got stuck on the sand so often, that we decided to turn around and head out into Sebago Lake instead (another route that STPC offers if you're not renting and taking away). We kayaked up to Hot Tub Island (which is this man made ring of stones) for lunch but it - and the knee deep water around it - was absolutely covered in and full of bird poop. So we kayaked over to Raymond Beach which was the other spot STPC suggested, but it was so crowded we had nowhere to pull up. In the end it was a nice day bobbing in the water - we saw lots of fish, baby ducks, turtles, and an enormous barn owl! - but not for $90.

We chose May 26th for the 1:30 p.m. tour, and from the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel so welcome. Our tour guides -- Bruce B., Jeff M., and Joe N. -- were outstanding. They brought the mountain to life with fascinating facts, rich history, and just the right amount of humor to keep the energy high throughout the ride up. At the summit, they went well beyond what was expected: rather than retreating to their vans or the museum building, they stayed with our group, helped take photos, and made themselves available to answer questions as everyone soaked in the breathtaking views. That kind of personal touch made a real difference. Our volunteers were thrilled with the entire experience from start to finish. As someone who organizes events like this specifically to show appreciation for the people who give so much of their time, it means the world when the staff goes above and beyond to make it special.
