I have had the great pleasure of meeting Joy but also working with her over the course of 12 weeks. Now before I actually get into this review, I want to throw out a few disclaimers...Joy does NOT have a magic wand that will magically make your issues go away. Joy does NOT have the ability to do your work for you and lastly Joy does NOT by any means sell herself short on the services that she provides. Joy, you are an absolute god send. Seriously.... I have been thru various counseling all of my life but that didn't resolve my issues nor did it really give me the tools needed to actually resolve them. So since I had tried that previously and pretty much got the same result, I knew I had to try something different. So, what did I do? I went to my trusty yelp and reached out and received several responses. I had a few phone interviews because I needed to find the right person to help me thru some heavy stuff. I liked Joy right off the bat. You can simply tell by the tone in her voice that she is an angel. I signed up for 6 sessions with Joy...and after my 6th session, I signed up for 6 more. And I threw Joy some crazy challenges (nothing in my life has EVER been easy)....there were issues that she flat out told me she couldn't do anything about (I appreciate the honestly more than you know) and there were some issues where I really feel like I challenged her but guess what? SHE NEVER GAVE UP ON ME. SHE NEVER TOLD ME SHE COULDN'T WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION (again she doesn't have a magic wand). Instead what I received was far far greater than any gift...Joy gave me the tools I needed to see where my deficiencies came from and also gave me some positive insight as to how to fix the behaviors and this is something I now work on EVERY SINGLE DAY and it's made me a better person. So if you feel like you are stuck, and don't know where to go, and you have tried traditional methods (and they haven't really worked) I would seriously urge you to give Joy a call...set up and appointment and more importantly work on your (O&*%(Q*&)%(. I worked with Joy two years ago but never wrote a review for her until now. I was going through a rough time with my boyfriend at the time and Joy helped me heal from some deep rooted sadness. I ended up stopping my sessions with her because I couldn't afford her services financially, but our sessions together that we did have had an impact on me through the past few years. I continued to do my own healing and introspection on my own. She allowed me to record our sessions, so I went back and relistened to them to understand her hypnotherapy method. I've since created my own healing method from those recordings which I call "mental workshops" that have helped me heal some childhood trauma that I've avoided for years. It's become a more cost-effective way for self-therapy for me and has worked for me. Thank you Joy for your guidance then. I would recommend Joy for anyone suffering emotionally from any kind of relational trauma and aren't sure where to start your healing process. She is gentle but honest and does have your best interest in mind. Joy Reichard is a pleasure to work with and completely different than my past experiences with hypnotherapy. I had tried hypnotherapy twice before working with Joy and though I liked the modality some, I wasn't totally enthralled by it. When I booked my appointment with Joy, I don't think I told her I was vaguely dubious, but really I was. I had remembered my past experiences where, though useful, I didn't feel like the hypnotherapist had really "heard" me and had instead offered "textbook" solutions to the problem I was hoping to treat. By contrast, my experience with Joy was truly inspiring work. Joy's work is very individualized and though I felt I was coming in with a typical "run of the mill" problem, her approach was tailored to me and my personality, and she readily leveraged tools that appeared to work better with me and disregarded tools that might be better for others. I felt totally heard and understood and no sense of judgement on her part. In the course of prodding me to go deeper into my own life experience, we were able to more clearly see how certain behaviors and thought processes may have been useful at a time, even if they were less useful (perhaps even detrimental) now. In short, it felt as if we were able to "unhook" these associations and create room for something different. It's really transformative work. One thing that's impressive to me about her work is that she learned to adopt some of "my language" so that when we went into a relaxed state, I would benefit by her use of repeating back to me my own interpretations, goals, and understanding. The outcome is that the recording we made together under hypnosis is still useful to me today when I replay it on my own. The first recording we made was 3 years ago-ish and since then we've worked on some different things and I'm finding out that her work is more varied than I had originally understood. Disclosure: Joy and I know each other professionally as we both work out of the same San Mateo location. I believe this professional rapport mostly adds to my ability to yelp her because I too have a private medical practice and therefore, share some similar goals as Joy does. I gotta say if I can give 0 stars, I would. I went to see Joy because of the reviews. However, I think these reviews must have been jury rigged if you know what I mean. I only went to see her once since it didn't relaly help me much. She gave me a CD to try and it just did not do me any good. Yeah yeah, people are going to tell me I need to see her more than just once. However, I didn't see anything different after the first time I saw her which I was hoping it would. What she did for me, I could have paid a fraction by going to my own shrink by paying just my co-pay! I don't smoke and I don't need to lose weight. She was no help to me at all. Not only did she have the balls to ask me for payment in advance, she was telling me if it didn't work, she would only charge me 50%! She proceded in telling me about this woman with the potato chip addiction story mor than once! I came to Joy with a very horrific personal problem that kept pulling me deeper and deeper into the drama and negativity of the situation. It was very specific and she and I created an outcome and then she made a tape specific to my problem. I must of listened to the tape 1000 times. Whenever the issue came up I would put my tape on. I had never been to a hypnotherapist before, and wasn't sure what to expect. As I had always heard, you should think that you haven't really been hypnotized, but you'll later realize that you have...because it works. I quit smoking, just like that, really! There was the five days of annoying withdrawals that she tells you about, and then that's it. It's a little expensive, but worth it!! And some insurances will cover it, so check with them. I purchased a session through Trubates. I have never done hypnotherapy before, but I am so tired of my extra weight and the struggle to lose it, I thought I would give it a try. I am so very pleased I did. This morning I feel re-energized in my committment and determination.
