I recently switched from Sourcewise to Health Trust Meals on Wheels and that was a TREMENDOUS improvement. There are 3 reasons for that: 1. Health Trust staff is very professional and quick to make requested changes in food type and/or beverages (juice or milk) 2. Quality of the meals is infinitely better and there is a no pork option. 3. My delivery person- Joseph- is extremely conscientious, polite and texts me when he leaves the food and/or if he will be late. I offered to give him a tip but he refused, saying "No need for a tip Sir,I enjoy doing my job." BRAVO! read more

This is a completely untrustworthy organization that deals with neither its employees nor its clients in good faith. They have long had poor standards in terms of responsiveness to clients, as other reviews illustrate. Now they have surreptitiously shut down most of their major programs (while continuing to fundraise for same) and laid off most staff. Rather than abiding by the severance package they had staff sign, they manufactured reasons to fire most of them for "performance issues," with no notice or severance pay. Likewise, they're abandoning clients who relied on them for housing subsidies and other assistance. They have thrown a large number of both employees and clients into housing insecurity, without a care in the world... but they have the money to pay a PR consultant, based in Idaho, to cover up their unethical conduct. read more

The fastest and easiest volunteering service I have ever done. I signed up through Hands on Bay Area and was excited to help put food baskets together for the HIV/AIDS affected community of Santa Clara. Found easy parking on the street, rolled up to the location, saw that there were sandwiches/wraps and waters to partake in and then we are off to a start! We formed a well assembly line where literally one person puts one item into a crate and then it gets boxed up. My only "problem" is that it went by so fast! We only had to put 50 baskets together and it took us less than an hour to do. I wish that we were able to put more together but it was nice to get out early on a Friday evening. I will definitely go back and volunteer here. Its a great organization and people are so nice. read more

ABOUT THE FOOD BASKET PROGRAM: On their website: "The Food Basket provides food and nutritional supplements to individuals and families with HIV/AIDS. Volunteers are needed to help pack and deliver food to homebound residents, as well as to assist the more mobile clients who come to the center to pick up their food. As a Food Basket volunteer, you will be providing a supplemental food service to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. The Food Basket operates once a month, with the following positions available: Food Packer: Pack food on Friday night from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at a warehouse located in San Jose. Delivery: Deliver food on Saturday morning, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. You will be given the name and address of the clients on your route, as well as a map to their home. You may deliver food individually, in pairs, or in groups. Pick Up: Volunteer at the warehouse during the week following the Saturday of delivery, assisting clients who pick up their own food. The available shifts are Monday-Friday, 9:30 am-12:00 pm and 2:00 pm-4:30 pm." This is the only organization allow younger children to help out. They also provide sandwich from Le Boulanger for volunteers to snack before hands on which is awesome. The Food Basket serves about 300 clients through out the Santa Clara County. No better way to start your FRI evening than volunteer, so much more rewarding. read more

I've been a client of THT since its inception in the mid 1990's and during that tine I've witnessed its unfortunate decline from a first rate service to an honestly poor even laughable one. It is sad that an organization whose intention is to alleviate stress for its client really ends up causing stress. The fact that I feel compelled to write this bad review should show this. In the last (early 2000's) I had no complaints with the service and used to hold other ASOs to the high bar they used to set. I moved to Alameda Cty for a time and experienced 1st hand the lacking services there (eg me having to travel w/o a car) all over AC doing the leg work for matters that would generally be covered by my Social Worker at THT. I looked forward to moving back to SCC to the more competent services I (previously) received at THT (the quality of services, I found, had dropped drastically!) There were clues when I left THT in 2016 that ThT was on decline: upon my decision to move in 2016 my then new SW, Miriam, told me that if I needed assistance getting set up with services in Alameda County she would be happy to assist me! Sounded great but I never heard from her again! So when I returned to SCC I told her Supervisor I did not wish to be re assigned to Miriam so she obliged and assigned me to Jenny Pena and things were fine at first but then the horrors of her lack of caring for me, her client, came to light. I was hospitalized for 9 weeks in February of 2019. My MD said the reason was Aspiration Pneumonia from which I still experience the after effects. During those 9 weeks, Jenny did not visit me once which made necessary me to set up on my own my post hospital after care which I did. When I got home I had to call her and was asked if there was anything she could do to assist with aftercare! No said I, I've already taken care of it! So I'm home in mid April and my birthday and recertification is due in mid June. I had bought a car prior to my hospital stay but since I had a seizure, my license had been suspended which necessitated a house call for Jenny. So she comes out to my home with a "trainee" a very nice young man I thought and took care of my recertification or so I thought. After they left she informed me she forgot to get my 2018 tax returns so could I email them to her so I complied of course. From that point on my relationship with Jenny continued to deteriorate to the point that I no longer was desirous of having her as my SW! So I asked for a new one and detailed my history of poor service from her to her Supervisor Tania who actually accused me of mixing Jenny up with someone else (!). So when my recertification was due last December she said that she would sit in on my recertification to ensure everything was ok. So I show up for my appointment and was disheartened when only Jenny was there. I asked for her Supervisor who then emerged from the back to decertify me. She then relented and assigned me to Jesus Parra and I was happy. Until he left THT mere weeks later for another job. So I have a new issue requiring assistance from THT so per Jesus called the main line for help and again received the run around from them (eg leaving messages not returned in a timely manner). So I contacted Tania who again was very skeptical of my issue until I emailed her my forms as proof. I was then informed of a "period of transition" at THT and that I'd be receiving a new caseworker in November. I also learned that Tania's boss had left the company too. Due to unemployment, I have a little time on my hands, so I decided to finally do some delivery work for MOW. It's not that complicated: meals+wheels=magical food delivery. As a volunteer you'll need to submit an application, clear a background check and get a TB screening before setting out on your own route (it takes a few hours one day a week and they request a six month commitment). Unlike some meals on wheels programs, the Health Trust does not have a minimum age requirement for their clients - they'll deliver food to you if you're housebound for some reason, regardless of age. Meals are currently prepared and picked up at a local hospital, though I'm told that may change in the future. All meals, beverages and delivery containers are provided at the pickup site, as are route details and directions along with any special instructions for each residence. such a worthy cause! i volunteered recently and was very happy to see the food basket was still up and running with many volunteers donating their time to help others. the service at this location is the food basket service. food is packed up and delivered for patients and people in santa clara county who are suffereing from hiv and aids. this is a great place to volunteer your time, people! food packing takes place on the 3rd friday of each month at 6pm. if you get there 15 minutes early, you get to partake and enjoy the free pizza they offer as a snack (don't take 5 pieces thinking this is a free meal). it's a courtesy to the volunteers, and a mighty yummy one at that. friday night at 6pm - what are you really doing? getting ready to start your weekend, right? well, there is no better way to start your weekend than to volunteer a mere hour of your time to help those less fortunate. how can you say no? saturday morning's volunteers take the food baskets created on friday night and hand deliver them to the client, patient, person in need. it's giving me warm fuzzies just thinking about how important this is for those people who cannot get out and buy their own groceries. i hope you'll consider contacting the health trust - talk to katie plante (408-961-9899). she is a wonderful resource of information ,and she can get you set up to volunteer. read more

Despite my sarcastic and biting yelp reviews, I try to be a good honest person. So this past Christmas, I took off my Grinch costume off and tried to be a good elf. My family and I did some Christmas gift packaging and giving to the less fortunate. I truly believe that one needs to help another stranger in order to become that person we want to see in our world. It's easy to do zero, but it's harder to be someone's hero. If you want to volunteer here, it's pretty easy. You'll need to be in contact with Mr. Jeff Russell who will let you know about what various opportunities they need help with. Since I called around the holidays, my family of four got blessed with packaging Christmas presents for kids and their families. I was able to recruit my girlfriend and her two kids to help out as well. Our group of kids ranged from kindergarten, first grade, and fourth grade so there are many kid friendly opportunities here if you want to involve your family in being more altruistic. I didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth so I try not to have my kids become spoiled by the opportunities that they have now. This experience helps kids understand that there are people who are less fortunate and how easy it is to give back. Hopefully, this seed that I plant in my kids will encourage them to volunteer all throughout their lifetime. So go plant your seed(s), watch it grow, and hopefully multiply. Now for some reason, I don't want to sound preachy, but go listen to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and John Lennon's "Imagine." That's what's playing in my head now...crazy I am. :) Again, this is a humbling experience. This organization really tries to help out other families with gifts during the holidays and providing healthy food and groceries to the less fortunate year round. They also have other opportunities like unloading food in the docks and delivering meals. So why not donate some time in your life to help someone else? It will make you a better person and our world a better place to live. read more

Awesome place. I have volunteered here since 2007. The Food Basket is held every third week of the month. You can volunteer on weekdays (pickup week) where clients come to the food bank to pick up their supplies, Fridays nights are pack up (pack food and other basic needs into bins for sorting), and on Saturday, generous drivers deliver to those who prefer having deliveries instead of pickup. I went down to downtown on on Friday nights from 6-7PM. If there are a lot of volunteers, the food packing might take less than twenty minutes or if not many, then about an hour or so. Yummy pizzas are a treat (paid by the coordinator herself) so it would be nice to thank them and make sure not to appreciate it. They also have drinks if anyone is thirsty. Also, the food basket always thanks volunteers before and after pack up so I am really grateful. :) I definitely recommend this volunteer spot. Great for all ages! read more
