Could you imagine contacting a food pantry to donate boxed, non-perishable food items and then they reject it because they "do not have the capacity to store them"? I'm not talking about pallets of food, just a cart full that I decided to buy to celebrate my birthday. 43 birthday cake mix kits, plus other canned goods and diapers. That's too bad because I'm sure some families and individuals could use it. Not going to donate or volunteer here ever again. Yup, I've done so in the past. Was hoping I could help out my local community but I'll be donating and volunteering elsewhere out of my zip code. read more

West Valley Community Service is such a great resource for residents of Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno Saratoga, and West San Jose, areas of West Valley California, who are in need of emergency financial assistance and/or food. They offer a wonderful food pantry, that is open 5 days a week, during the workweek, and you can even come an additional day of the week, during the workweek on Fridays, in which you are able to select additional groceries and this day is called "Fresh Fridays". Fresh Fridays are reserved specifically for members of the West Valley Community to stock up on, or replenish their supplies, of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and fresh baked goods. When shopping at their food pantry, you are even free choose your own selection of groceries and (once you complete your initial registration for their services) they give you a significant amount of groceries. In fact, at West Valley Community Services, they give you an entire grocery cart FULL of groceries (that you get to select from their pantry), every week (and they even provide you with grocery bags if needed). Again, everyone, who is eligible for their services, is able to shop the regular food pantry at West Valley Community Services, once per week! That's an average of 4 times per month, and 4 grocery carts filled with groceries each month! The food in the pantry is super high quality, fresh, and it's always delicious as well. I especially appreciate that there are no/few limitations on the amount of fruits and vegetables that you can choose from the pantry. This is fantastic because healthy groceries, like fruits and vegetables, are especially important to have in our lives. They also offer a selection of baby food (at least I think they do) and they offer baby care supplies, such as a selection of baby diapers, as well! If you are ever in need, and you find yourself considering reaching out to West Valley Community Services for their assistance, in any way, please don't hesitate to do so. You will always be treated with the utmost dignity and respect there. If you are ever in need of additional resources, there are other organizations in the area who offer additional resources for free, such as toiletries. You can locate these service in the Bay Area community by searching FindHelp.org. The volunteers at West Valley Community Services are always incredibly kind, considerate, and caring, and the location for this organization, in Cupertino, California, is just beautiful, well kept, very clean, and it is located in a safe neighborhood as well. Angelic souls Angelic souls giving us gifts of food and drinks and kindness and hope to get through the day deserves the benefit of the doubt by strangers coming in looking at it only once , try many times and you'll see how awesome this service provider truly is. if you want to be a logical thinker, you have to look more than once at anything , from many points of view. we are homeless and they are doing their best and to (us) that is (god like) stuff going on at this services, just saying - Logic says it - try again , donate and be more than a one stop by and type performer. I am homeless and I recommend my opinion on it and to the services , you are my blessing in a hard day and without you and others like you, we would be, more confused on it, said this homeless guy enjoy your Christmas :) read more

My review is based on my 10 months as a volunteer. I enjoyed working with the staff, donors, clients, and other volunteers so much and saw how much good the agency does for its clients, that when I had the opportunity to join the staff, I gratefully and excitedly accepted. I volunteered at the Front Desk, which is the first place most of the agency's clients, staff, donors, and volunteers encounter. It was hectic, with phone calls, greeting clients, and providing information to potential clients and to folks dropping off food for the food pantry, but the atmosphere was always very welcoming and congenial. The staff treated me as an important part of the agency, provided me with training and guidance, but also allowed me to use my skills to handle situations from the basic to the very complex. Clients were overwhelmingly pleasant, patient, and grateful. The agency helped with critical needs such as a food pantry, financial assistance, and housing assistance; also, it provided referrals to other resources that the agency could not directly provide. I experienced the camaraderie of fellow volunteers who cared and wanted to give to their community. I worked with retirees, high school and college students, stay-at-home parents, and those like me who had taken a break from their careers. And we had fun! I am proud to have been a volunteer for this important community resource, and now am even prouder to be a member of staff. read more

Community Services for those in need! WVCS offers great services to those who live in the areas they service, which include: Cupertino, West San Jose, Monte Sereno, Los Gatos, and unincorporated Mountain Regions, but please check with them to see if your area code falls within their service area. They are able to provide services to homeless individuals and families and low income populations. WVCS has a food pantry on site with great produce, meats, bread, and so much more. They have case management for those in need and people are able to see if they qualify for food pantry, one time housing/rental assistance, special programs (provides baskets on holidays to families), after school programs for children, and so much more. Disclaimer: This review is based solely on my experience as a donor. I hope they are better at interacting with clients than they are donors. I had a bag of groceries that I wanted to donate to their food bank so I drove over to drop it off. My baby had fallen asleep in the car on the ride over but luckily I saw that the doors to the food pantry were open and that there was a blonde haired woman working right outside by the curb. I pull up to the curb (which I know is technically double parking, but I had the sleeping baby in the car and the woman was right there) so I could just hand off the bag of groceries real quick. the woman turned her back when I stepped out of my car so I said "excuse me, mam?" and got no response. I said "excuse me" 2-3 more times, there was no one else around but me and her and she was literally less than 6 feet away from me. At this point it was beginning to get a little awkward, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and figured maybe she was just hard of hearing. She finally turns around and I say "Hi! i have a bag of groceries to donate, can I just leave them with you?". She just says "you can't park here, go park in one of the parking spaces over there". The ones she pointed to were far from the door and there was no way I could carry my sleeping baby and the groceries together. I told her "I have a sleeping baby in the car, can I just leave them here?" Mind you we are literally standing right at the food pantry with the doors to the pantry wide open. She could have easily taken the bag from me and brought it inside. Or she could have offered to follow me over to the parking spaces and take the bag from me there. Instead she tells me "go put it by the front door" and turns and walks away. She did not thank me for the donation, ask if I needed a receipt, nothing. I certainly don't expect someone to fall all over themselves thanking me, but some common courtesy would be nice. I have volunteered at similar community agencies and I would have NEVER treated a donor like that. So I set the bag down outside by the front door and I waited in my car for a few minutes to see if that lady or any other employee was going to come to take it inside to the food pantry. After about 5 minutes I left and who knows how long that bag of food was left out there exposed to the elements and potential contamination. From now on my family will be donating food to Sacred Heart Community Service. They have a drive up area for donors to drop off food that is always staffed with volunteers who will take the donations from your vehicle (which is very helpful for someone with a baby in the car or a disabled person) and best of all they are COURTEOUS. read more

It's a shame there's not more help for the working poor. I got my hopes up coming to this place only to be denied help and not offered other services that would help my situation. I'm aware that I'm not the only working single parent in the world struggling to make ends meet, but a little more compassion and understanding on how humiliating it is to ask for help would have been nice. What does one have to do to get help BEFORE actually becoming homeless or getting an eviction notice??? I'm trying to prevent that from happening, but can't seem to get any assistance to catch up. read more

I have nothing but good to say of West Valley Community Services. It is a difficult task to work with people who are hurting. I received nothing but care and compassion every time I used their services which was for over a year. I was offered more than I used--Thank you. Now I want to give back and upon visiting to see what I can do the volunteers were kind and the staff were extra kind and patient with me as I sorted out how I can give back. I have read the other comments and realize that the task is challenging and we should expect to see hurting people and offer compassion. I have experienced nothing but good and a liberating healthy environment of leadership, staff and volunteers. Keep up the good work. read more

The leadership has been here for 2 years and have made positive changes so WVCS is even a more wonderful resource for our community. As I waited in the lobby for a meeting I watched how pleasantly each person was greeted, and how quickly the line moved for the pantry. And I know their Mobile Pantry is making huge impacts to relieve hunger for local college students, the working poor, and others in need.
