Where are my pictures? Quality/Quantity - Walked by here almost daily in the last 3 weeks. As a kid, this used to be the local mom and pop convenience store. Yes I am so outdating myself! But it has been an upscale liquor store for a very long time now. Okay, as I was saying, while walking and spoiling my daughter to Kiss of Matcha, then spoiling myself to Richmond Republic Draught House, see other reviews, I saw the sign of a free tasting and you got me. We came back at 5:25pm after "partying" with my daughter and watching FIFA. I did not expect much, but when I got here, a few locals (also from the Republic) hung out, drank/tasted more and bought a few Fraction 4 packs. Fraction Brewery is from our Alameda Island across the bay, my old hang out. Boy do I miss Spirit Alley... And Rockwall. If you know, you know. We/I had such a good time here. I love hanging with the locals. And it brings back so many memories from the old neighborhood. Ambiance - A small local high end liquor store. Clean, organized, and professional. Plenty of street parking, both metered and free residential. But we walked. Service - The person serving us from Fraction was amazing! What a great ambassador for both Fraction and this business. Price - Free + the cost of what you buy. Prices are slightly higher here as expected. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success here since 2013 and with your 4 locations. read more

Love this unassuming shop. Great selection of both mainstream and obscure wines, beer and spirits. There are often reps from interesting companies presenting their product. Everyone is friendly and never had a bad experience here. I also recommend the Palestinian olive oil; great product which is difficult to find elsewhere. read more

Nice spot in the Inner Richmond for craft beer and spirits. There's non-alcoholic wine and beer as well. They have a good selection of local craft beer and have some interesting sours. I was impressed that they had Cantillion bottles having visited their brewery in Brussels. I can't remember seeing Cantillon in the US before. Will definitely be back when I'm in the area! read more

A quality spirit being brought to a birthday gathering? What birthday person wouldn't love you? No one. Nice place for a last minute and always appreciated gift. Person behind the counter can offer good advice. However I didn't see any Wild Turkey so be prepared to spend some coinage. They offer those little single serving bottles which are helpful. A good place to treat yourself too. Oh and the have uncommon ice cream. Indian Ice Cream. Ice cream flavored with booze. Savory flavored ice cream. I'll try some next time. With each new Healthy Spirts location I visit, I am more impressed with the consistency and quality of their offerings. The Richmond location is no exception. This location is about the same size and roughly the same setup as the locations I'd been to previously. Many many tall shelves lining the wall with all sorts of liquors and alcohol, plus a generously sized cooler with lots of beer and wine. When my partner and I are at Healthy Spirits locations, she usually focuses on the rum selections and I on the beer. With regards to the latter, it was basically the same breweries you'll find at their other locations. Lots of California and very local brewery representation (think Alvarado, Bare Bottle, Ghost Town brewing, etc.) You can buy as singles or 4-packs (including mix and match.) As far as the rum selection goes, this location seemed to have a tad less than other Healthy Spirits. Or at least, the mix of price points wasn't quite as diverse. It seemed like there was a lot of high-end and some lower, but not a lot of the quality mid-tier stuff. The Duboce/Castro location seems to be the most comprehensive with their rum selection (at least that we've seen so far.) Despite that, we would definitely stop here when in the area again. It's very easily located on Clement St, particularly now with a lot of the support network of slow streets around the area. read more

What a great little store. We didn't need assistance because we knew what we wanted and were able to find it immediately. Prices are fair considering the convenience and the selection is wonderful. Our pickup: Tripel Karmeliet. So smooth. Had it in Belgium on tap...changed my life. It's seriously my favorite beer. I can have it alone or with food. If a drink can manage that then we're in business. Back to this shop, small, but loaded with goodies. They have beer, wine and I even saw ice cream. This is the best "liquor store" in the city. This review is mainly catered to those beer lovers such as myself. They have several locations throughout the city, however this particular location always seems to get the latest and greatest beers on the DAILY. I could come here every day and the beer selection is always rotated to new 4-packs, solo cans and bottles. Pros: one of the employees was super helpful in recommending a beer Cons: I'm not sure if they made the wisest customer service decision. The cashier rings me up and tells me my total was $11.14. He then calls over his coworker to double check the price. They then made me wait a few minutes while they nervously looked for the right price, only to then charge me $10 extra -_- It surprises me that they didn't realize during the awkward 3 minutes they made me wait that the best move would be to tell me the correct price and then honor the price they originally told me. Of course, they didn't know it was my first time there, but it certainly didn't inspire trust that they're charging the correct price, and it certainly didn't inspire a desire to return to the store. New favorite bottle shop. I am a beer writer and was sent on an assignment by my Editor to find the best craft spots in SF and I did just that with this gem. Of course this place has your typical Bay Area brews such as Marin Brewing Company, Moylans, and Drake's, but they are also equipped with hard to find beers from around the world. I was like a kid in a candy store here. I wish I had a $1,000 to blow on just beer. Not to mention, I spoke with the owner and beer buyer who were both super friendly and informative. Though this place is out of the way from Oakland, it is worth the trek. I highly recommend you stop in for some unique brews and take them to nearby Golden Gate Park for an exceptionally lovely afternoon. They even have some food choices like cheeses, olives, seasonings, etc. My friend and I bought some of the hummus and whole wheat pita to accompany our beer for our picnic. No question, this place is deserving of a "Woohoo" rating. read more

I had a lucid dream last night, about my 2012 trip to Brussels, Belgium. In Brussels, I tasted so many delicious beers. This morning, I decided I want to try and find some of these specialty beers. Yes, I'm extremely pretentious with my beers, and just a forewarning, that my snobbiness in this review might make you want to throw up. From inner sunset, I just missed the 44 and the next one was another 28 minutes away. I decided to walk. It's around 8:30pm when I arrive at the corner store, and I'm greeted by Campbell (or at least that's how I think his name is spelled). I was in awe by the set up of this shop... beer beer everywhere! One wall of fridged beers, one wall of unfridged beers (primarily 750ml), and the wall behind the cash register with hard liquors. The last wall is the window facing the street. I immediately start browsing, I notice many domestic beers as well as imports. The non-fridged wall was primarily filled with beers from Belgium and Germany, of course there were a bunch from other countries too. After about 20 minutes of browsing through the selections, I decided to ask if they carried the beers I was looking for. I was in no luck, but I didn't want to walk out empty handed and asked for some recommendations. Here comes the fun part. Campbell comes around from behind the counter and helps me out. First off, stouts. I get a recommendation for stouts. Campbell points out about 5 or 6 different stouts all with minor differences. Some are more coffee based, some have more of a nutty earthy flavour, some retain a nice caramel base. He kept going, but after about 6, we got side tracked. Second, floral nosed beers. While he was talking about the 6th stout, I noticed the beer bottle next to it. I immediately was distracted, and changed course on our topic. I started asking for recommendations for floral nose / floral bodied brews. There were a bunch that he recommended. It varied a little bit more into the fruit notes, but that's understandable. From there, I mixed it up a little to be more detailed and exact with what I was looking for, which changed up our conversation once again. Third, complex beers. When I got to the floral body, I realized that there are quite a few beers that have the nose, but lacks depth in the overall body in terms of taste. While we digressed from the floral nose, I started looking for beers that had depth and complex bodies. He provided some recommendations there too. With a handful of recommendations, I began deciding which beers I was going to be walking out with. Which beers gets the privilege of getting a date night with me? Instead of picking one or two beers, I left with 10 beers, which set me back about $113 after tax. I remain unfazed by this. They also sell hummus (and they have samples too), ice cream, crackers, and various items for snacking on. Campbell is very very knowledgeable about these beers, and has tried many of them. I was able to engage conversation with a few of the specialty beers I've tried. His knowledge is extremely impressive. He remembers many of the minor differences in the different beers, can pretty much tell you where each beer was brewed from the top of his head, and how each one is brewed (like in oak barrels, or with what specialty grains / hops and where those grains and hops originated from too). I will report back with an edit to this review with how some of the recommendations turned out. Highly recommended for specialty beer lovers, and I'll be back, probably very soon. read more

Ever since I took an affinity to bourbon this past year, I've been seeking to purchase tasty/quality corn whisky. I stumbled upon Healthy Spirits online a few months ago and finally made it in to the actual store. I first went to the store in the Castro since I just had brunch around there. I was looking for some Stagg Jr. but their only stock was in the other store in the InnerRichmond district so I made my way over there to pick up the bottle. I found that this location in the Inner Richmond was better in terms of size and organization. I also think (don't quote me on this) that this is more of a central location just because it was so much nicer. I would recommend coming to this location if you have to choose between them and you're not looking for anything in particular. Of course, just call ahead if you are looking for something specific. I want to join the monthly bourbon club where you pay $60-$70 a month and you get a bottle of bourbon and some exclusive rights at the shop (phone reservations and 10% off), but it requires you to pick up that bottle every month and I can't commit to that. From afar, it looks like just an average liquor store, but don't be fooled. This store is a hidden gem! They have an AMAZING selection of unique local and imported beers, wine, whiskey, etc. But wait, there's more. They also have cheese, hummus, and a wide assortment of organic ice cream from local creameries. This is a *truly* great little operation and its sister on Divis/Castro. A lot of times it's said that about people's favorite places, but, objectively speaking for me here is why 1. terrific selection of esoteric beers that are actually great-tasting and not just random lazy pickings off a single distributor's list. Super sourcing from outside the normal offerings, and picks not found elsewhere. Most everywhere else they'll have some IPAs and some imports and blah blah, and they'll be pedigreed so to speak, but will taste poor and or uninteresting. Conversely, all of the beers I've picked up here browsing I've liked or loved. Really. 2. amazing recommendations. I found two of my favorite beers through recommendations of the staff here. Sadly the guy doesn't work there anymore, but when I described to him what I liked about beers he picked one for me and said this will change your life. It did. Years later it is still my favorite beer of all time. And then on another visit he picked two others. I still drink them both, but one of them I cannot find anywhere and they can't even get it anymore. 3. The niceness and helpfulness of the staff. Both locations. I once had a long-ish conversation with the ginger mgr at the Clement St. one and while no one else was present he spent dozens of minutes talking to me about beers and other bottles on their walls. I don't remember any of it, but he was very passionate and sincere and didn't try to sell me anything at all. Same with the other location. FINALLY OPENED!! As of an hour ago, Clement street has become 25% cooler. We've been waiting for weeks to check out all the amazing beers and whiskeys they offer. I was (am) a huge fan of the original location on Castro since I found out they had one of my favorite Belgian blonds. I was able to chat with one of the staff, and had he not said he was still busy stocking the shelves, I would have bombarded him with questions. Needless to say, they know what they're doing here. Forget your Bud Lights and Rolling Rocks (no offense), but serious drinkers allowed only. Stoked that HS has landed in Inner Richmond. I pray I don't become an alcoholic now. read more

Beer, Bourbon, and Hummus....could it get any better? Rami's mommy makes those wonderful middle eastern spreads, ranging from a great hummus and babaganoush to an olive tapanade. Now....let the spirits begin. First, this place has their own producer for uniquely oaked barrel bourbons....THEN they take those bourbon barrels and put some wonderful California beers into those barrels to age a lil longer. This leaves an unique variety of liquor that is truly just for 'healthy spirits'. Now lets move on to their massive, yes MASSIVE, bottle beer collection. They are heavy on California craft brews and Belgian ales....mmm....perfect. Make your way around the room and explore the magnificence of beer. Hopefully he'll shed light on some English ales and bitters, but for now, this is my go to spot for bottled beer! read more

A not-so-related-but-relevant-nonetheless-anecdote: Flashback: Summer 2000. My 15-year-old self started my first legit job working at a Sweet Factory Candy Store. Elated to be so close to what I so loved, my candy freak self was so overwhelmed with excitement that on the first day, I consumed 5lbs of Haribo gummies and jelly bellies that had supposedly "fallen on the floor", drank, 3 Jones Sodas, which I had supposedly "broke" and ended the shift throwing up a rainbow of red, yellow, and blue lake 5, 7, 16, and high fructose corn syrup in the mall bathroom. Flashforward: 2013. My-28-year-old, candy-cum-beer-freak self walked into Healthy Spirits Clement for the very first time, and was hit with the same overwhelming sense of euphoria that I had experienced those so many years ago consumed me once more. Clearly, if I had the same kind of first day as I had that fateful inaugural run at the good ol' Sweet Factory as I would have at Healthy Spirits, I would likely have alcohol poisoned myself into oblivion. For this reason, I give the friendly gentlemen behind the counter here the highest kudos for several reasons: 1) They are sober (or at least act like it) when I know that I could never be, if I ever found myself in their shoes. 2) They are extremely knowledgeable and are 100% honest about their opinions on everything in the store and have it extraordinarily well-organized. 3) They have exceptional taste, and I do mean exceptional. So while I pity the fool who comes in here thinking he can score a pack of bud lite and a bag of takis, (I don't doubt it's happened), I could wax poetic forever about how much I love this store, and the fact that it is on my side of the city. It's a beacon of proof that we fog-dwellers West of Divis are still cool enough to be in the presence of this fine store, so please, patronize accordingly. read more

While I'm not a fan of the increasing gentrification of the Inner Richmond District, its hard not to be in love with places like this. Yes, I may spend hours at my (still pretty much) locals only bar, drinking toasts with my fellow drunkards to how things were, bemoaning the fact that demographically, the Richmond is starting to look more like the Mission...but you'll some nights you can find me furtively popping my head into Healthy Spirits when I need a fine belgium beer, a drop of whiskey, or some pepper jam for a late night writing session. Although their friendly, knowledgable service most often goes to hipsters, techies, and yuppies (all better dressed, more interesting and better looking then I will ever be), its hard for me not to like the feeling I get when I walk out with a perfectly recommended bottle of beer. I might bemoan their prices, which are about a dollar or two higher then other places, but I can't help but love their special beer releases, single barrel bourbons, and extraordinary selection of glassware. Some nights I may drunkenly rail about the market factors that forced Haig's to close, but really, I like Rami's mom's spicy hummus a little better then Haig's finest. Although I love the Double Rainbow scoops served up by Toy Boat, after a bad day at work you'll probably find me at home eating a pint of Healthy Spirit's gelato in my smoking jacket, curled up with a glass of Imperial Stout, listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony, smoking a cigar, and pretending to be classy. Goddamnit Healthy Spirits, why do you have to be such a fantastic bottle shop? I hate myself for loving you. read more

I just happened to come across this awesome shop today on the way back from a hike. I was just thinking how the neighborhood doesn't have a place to buy good cheese. If rom a distance I saw a Chimay sign and as I passed I saw bottle and bottle of beer, whiskey, and stopped in... Amazing place - they have wine, artisan gins too! Point Reyes Blue, Cow Girl Creamery cheese and delish lebani cheese. Staff are very friendly too.... read more

Wide selection of belgian ales and tripels. I have already been back twice for them. They also have a few exclusive beers that they brew in whiskey barrels. Must try those next. Prices are moderate- not particularly cheap nor expensive. Takes credit cards! Their homemade spicy hummus is delicious as well and perfect with toasted pita. Rami is a friendly guy and is passionate towards his beers and whiskey so ask him for recommendations. I am a big fan of beer and I love trying new beers. Every time I walk in here I feel like a kid who just walked into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. My eyes always lit up like it's Christmas day with a pile of presents under the tree when I walk in here. One of my favorite beer is Allagash Victoria Ale. One reason it's because my name is on the beer so it makes me feel special. Second, this beer is brewed in a white wine barrel so it's a unique and delicious beer. Third, I've been to this brewery so it has a special place in my heart. Since Victoria Ale isn't Allagash's top seller it's not an easy beer to find. I've spent a few years looking for this and finally I found it at Healthy Spirits. Makes me excited knowing they have this driving distance to me. I think it was the manager who was helping me select a beer. He suggested Stone Brewing's Suede Imperial Porter. I was sold when he told me there was honey, jasmine, flowers and the alcohol was hidden. It sounded so pretty and the bottle was pretty. I'm a girl so I was a sucker for it. When I tried it, it tasted like an IPA but...it is Stone Brewing and their drinks tend to be on the stronger tasting side. I wasn't a fan of this drink but I do love going into this store. To me the prices are a bit high here. Even for a 6pack of Anchor Steam is about $10. But they do have an awesome selection of drinks. FYI: $10 credit card minimum. read more

I would say 3.5, verging on 4 stars. Good selection of whiskey, lots of imported beer and a knowledgeable staff make this work checking out. The sad news is the beer selection feels a bit overwhelming and seems to snub the more local fare in preference of the imports, the pricing isn't great on either the beer or whiskey, and the prices are all on the backs of the bottles. This last point detracts a full star in my book since you have to physically turn every bottle around that you're interested in if you are looking for the price...this is especially irksome for the whiskey, since it is all behind the counter and you have to ask the owner the price for any of it. It made me feel like a time-wasting jerk since I was interested in a few whiskeys, but didn't end up buying since the price wasn't right. Happy to see another high end beer and whiskey shop in the area, but I probably won't be back for anything but the sour beers. read more

This is a true gem on a dated block of Clement. If you like drinking any kind of booze, visit this place. Beer selection covers all countries and genres. For wine, they have a handful of bottles for each popular grape. (No bottles under $15 so keep that in mind.) Healthy Spirits also has a beautiful hard alcohol selection. The staff does a great job if you're in the mood for "gin that's floral but not too pricey?" Or any other goofy request. Wait. What pairs well with all booze? Ice cream? They got you. First and foremost, they have an AMAZING selection of beer. They have managed to pack an enormous selection into a very small space. If you are a beer geek or have a specific beer you are looking for, I am sure you will not be disappointed. What's more, it is easily accessible by foot or by Muni. I would give it higher marks except for two points: Their prices are a bit high. I suppose that is to be expected, given their location and location. I suppose you pay for the selection and location. Then again, it is not the kind of place you go to buy a six pack for the fridge. They price the beers with a sticker on the back of the bottle. If you want to comparison shop by price you have to turn around every bottle to find out how much it costs. The service used to be pretty poor. The first time I went in, I was a bit intimidated. I told that to the person working there (who identified himself as the beer manager). He was quite pleasant and said something to the effect of, "If you have questions, any of us would be happy to help you." He helped me pick out a beer that fit what I was looking for. (I wanted an Oktoberfest and he helped me find one of the last they had in-stock.) When I went back a few weeks later, the same person was there. I asked about a different style (Barleywine). He showed me a few. One bottle he picked out was much larger than I wanted (about 750 ml. of 10%+ beer). When I told him "that is more beer than I can drink before it goes bad" he was visibly disappointed that I did not want to take him up on his suggestion. He became sullen and then returned behind the counter and stopped helping / offering suggestions. On my way out, I went out of my way to thank him for his time and he looked visibly hurt. That was several months ago and I have been in several times since then. I have not seen that employee in some time. The person who works there now has always been friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. Upon walking in, we were immersed in a wall to wall selection of beers, spirits, and even some wines. We happened to waltz on in at an unfortunate time as the power had just gone down in the neighborhood and Rami apologetically told us that he could only do cash. Which was fine with us because the great thing about it was that he didn't turn us away and still offered great customer service. But back to the the selection, it's amazing and vast -- my boyfriend (who is more of a beer geek than I) was blown away and didn't even know where to begin. There's a lot to go through and yet everything is meticulously organized with help if you need it. This is a place to get beers and revel in the vast selection -- they even have a beer (or bourbon) month of the club. This is the beer store we were looking for and we finally found it.
