The experience was very pleasant and low-pressure in regard to being visitors and the offering. Some churches can make it a bit uncomfortable for visitors, requiring them to stand and speak. In the past, I've also gone to churches that base the service around the collection of tithes and offerings. There was none of that here. Pastor Jeffrey Johnson Sr. delivered an amazing sermon, entitled "Get Ready" and the choir lead us in some beautiful praise and worship. The church offers lots of opportunities to connect with your church community through different groups and ministries. We will definitely be back.

The prayers are touching and they go out of your way to make you feel welcome. The ushers, the greeters, and everyone there go out of your way to make you feel welcome and they all seem very sincere. I attended The Church Within for several years early in its journey here in Indianapolis. The…read morechurch was founded by Rev. Louise Dunn, a former Catholic nun, who guided it as senior pastor for several years before resigning and Rev. Yvonne Brandenburg becoming pastor for the next few years. Following her retirement, Rev. Richard Brendan was briefly named pastor before current pastor Rev. Darren Chittick, who'd gone through the church's own Ministerial Studies Program (MSP) was named pastor and remains pastor to this date. The church started out in the Nora area in the Winterton Office Park, but quickly outgrew those digs. They moved into an office park on the Northwest side of Indy and stayed there for several years before making the decision to purchase a building in the Fountain Square area where the church remains currently. I was actually in the 2nd Ministerial Studies Program the church held and was ordained by The Church Within. I frequently offered guest preaching and served for about a year as the church's children's minister before opting to explore other opportunities as the church's move to Fountain Square wasn't an easy move in terms of my own transportation at the time. While I ended up aligning with a denomination for ministry for several years, my gratitude for the work of The Church Within remains. The Church Within falls within the real of New Thought (which some consider synonymous with New Age, but there's a difference). "Many Paths, One God" is sort of a core identifying piece to the church. The Church Within offers quite a bit of community service and is known for its support of progressive causes. It is an LGBTQ friendly church and has ordained a diverse group of ministers whose ministries have a wide impact. The church will officiate LGBTQ weddings and ordains and calls persons who are LGBTQ, women, those with disabilities, and many others. They can typically be found at Pride Day activities. It remains a modestly sized church - several members have been with it since the beginning. For a few years, they hosted Theatre Within, a local theatre known for tackling complex, engaging material. They are currently still holding virtual services due to the pandemic, though like most of Indiana they are slowly opening up and gather in different ways. While my path has taken me elsewhere, I'm still much appreciative of my years here and continue to engage with members both on and off-line. The church lives into its values quite nicely and builds a strong sense of community and belonging for its members.

It's inconvenient & you absolutely cannot see the screen or the stage in general. There are no TV's angled towards the area for those who unfortunately have to sit up there. The way there's no aisle to go from the left side to the right side also poses an annoyance because you then have a go down 4 flights of stairs and walk to the other side of the sanctuary and back up 4 flights to grab the balcony seat on the other end. (All of this if you don't like saying "excuse me, sorry" to 15+ people) please make the overflow accommodations more accommodating, please. & before anyone responds to my message - yes, I was on time today to the 11:15am it was just a crowded Sunday

They did not accept me and told me that they thought I did not have a close enough relationship with Christ. I only met with them for les than 15 minutes and they made that judgement. Not only did they make that judgement they had the audacity to tell me, a young woman in her early 20s, that she doesn't have a strong relationship with God. Absolutely horrible and unacceptable. I have tried to attend other campuses since but simply cannot attend a church that was so okay with what they did and never tried to apologize or retract what they said. The person who informed me of the decision and judgement added me on Facebook a year or so after and never did anything outside of that. I thought that was odd and a passive way to be sorry. I am not sure how they decide who serves on the worship team or as leaders, but it is not okay. The church seems very superficial and I attended it for years. This is just my story with TPCC, so take it as you wish. I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Northminster Presbyterian Church is a member of PC-USA (progressive side of the Presbyterian…read moreDenomination). Right on the edge of what would be considered Broad Ripple proper, Northminster has been around for over 75 years and is located directly on Kessler Boulevard. This is very much a residential church set smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. It has parking both in front of and behind the church with accessible parking spots on both sides. I entered through the back of the church and the entry had a single door that was easily accessible (I think it was an automatic door, as well). The church has two floors and does have an elevator. As I was present for an event, I did not explore the church and can't speak to full accessibility. I will note that I went to a main set of bathrooms that weren't really accessible - I could get into the bathroom, but the stalls were definitely lacking. I think there were single-user bathrooms near the sanctuary that are a bit better. Rev. Brian Shivers is senior pastor. Rev. Karen Herbst-Kim is associate pastor. PC-USA does ordain women and LGBTQ ministers, though you will find both conservative and liberal members of PC-USA congregations. I was present last evening for the last in a year-long concert series called "Sound and Spirit." It's an outreach of The Arts at Northminster and is definitely a draw for the church. The concerts are always free. This year's series included The Jeremiahs (Irish traditional), Palermo Presents (classical), Rob Dixon Trio (Jazz), Requiem in D Minor (Classical), Carolyn Craig, Organ (Classical), and Blue Highway (Bluegrass). The concerts are in the sanctuary. It's a fairly traditional sanctuary that has recently been made a bit more accessible with a couple of shortened pews offering natural wheelchair seating. They also, I learned, replaced a couple doors on the side that weren't quite accessible. I had no trouble going through them. There was a wider wheelchair that was outside the sanctuary in an area that appears to be used by parents with small children. I actually spent part of the evening there. I would probably give accessibility a 3.5 out of 5, though there's an obvious effort being made with recent improvements and an attitude of welcome that is nice. The parking spots were true ADA spots (rare for churches and not even true for my now home church of Second Presbyterian). I'd attended a couple services years ago here before a tragedy claimed the lives of the pastor and his wife. A plaque in their memory still rests on a wall in the church. Northminster has a "come as you are" approach to worship. While most dress business casual, there's not a judgmental approach to more casual folks (like me). Services are also streamed online including many of the special services. They host a variety of community activities including a preschool, yoga, music lessons, and more. While I'm happy in my church home, there's definitely something special here at Northminster with a wonderful staff, friendly congregation, progressive spirit, and a strong arts focus. For those seeking a more progressive yet traditional worship service Northminster would be a great place to explore.

I appreciate the friendships we have made here and love how the church serves the community in many ways, including operating a large child care and youth basketball program. My kids have also enjoyed going on mission trips with the youth group.
