We were planning a birth center birth that ended with a hospital transport due to non-emergency complications. When we had our initial appt at Edenway we had no intentions of an out of hospital birth, but from the minute we walked in the door a sense of love, acceptance and overwhelming calmness came rushing over us. Immediately we knew we were meant to find this beautiful home. We were paired up with Rosetta from day one and absolutely love her. She's extremely knowledgable about all things pregnancy, birth and baby. The approach the midwives take is overall wellness, not just "is baby and mom ok". This was very comforting because we have confidence that we were doing everything possible to ensure a healthy mom and baby and confident that any early warning signs would be noticed and handled immediately. Rosetta is loving, kind, encouraging and acts as not only a care provider but a life counselor. I had no idea how many areas of our life this pregnancy would shed light on and help us to change for the better and Rosetta was a key player in helping us identify, express and resolve the many emotions that came up throughout. Even though Rosetta was a God-send for our family, throughout the time we were at Edenway, we got to know the other midwives; Terry, Melody and Mary as well and truly felt connected to each of them. There's so much love pouring out of each of their hearts for the calling they've pursued as midwives. During our pregnancy we were required to take a birth class since this was our first and Birth Boot Camp came highly recommended. It's a 10-week course on all things natural birth and I would HIGHLY recommend this as well! The community of moms and dads we gained in our class has formed life long bonds and the education we gained was priceless. It truly equipped us so we could always be in control of the decisions for our birth. Especially with our risk factors toward the end and eventually our transport to the hospital, our knowledge helped to guide us and be confident in our decisions. Even if this is your 4th baby (we had one of those!), this class provides everything you need to be educated and trusting in your own body's ability to perfectly grow and birth your precious baby.

I loved that I was given the opportunity to listen to my own body and avoid invasive procedures during prenatal visits. I labored at the birthing center from 6:30pm and 8.5 hours later my daughter came. This was a longer active labor than intended, but through each obstacle Joy and Christina remained patient, calm, and knew exactly what to do to deliver my daughter safely. Cheryl cared about me as a whole person, I never felt rushed (most appointments were 30-60 minutes). I had to bring older siblings to most appointments and she made sure that they were included. I really appreciate that my midwife and the birth center didn't have lists of routine interventions. I was allowed to make my own decisions about my care and what tests/interventions I wanted to have. I had a peaceful and amazing water birth at the birth center. Even if I had needed to transfer, it would have been worth the money just to have my midwife's support in the hospital. I cannot recommend Gentle Beginnings more highly.

I was talking to a good friend about…read moremy concerns with hospitals in general and with my delivery expected to be in August, COVID made the idea of giving birth in a hospital even worse. My friend recommended I watch the documentary with Ricky Lake ( The Business of Being Born) to get more insight of what typically happens when giving birth via the hospital route and that lead me to decide to go the natural route like she did with her 4 children. She recommended I go through Family Birth Services like she did and that was the beat choice I could've made. Betty, who works in the office, was so pleasant and instantly gave warmth and comfort when I called to inquire more about how things worked. She was patient and friendly and seemed to care as if she'd already known me. At this point, I was still undecided on whether to go natural or continue with my hospital visits and upon returning to the next hospital check up visit, the feeling of being treated as a "patient" or treated as just another pregnant lady with a check up was overwhelming. My doctor was in (what I thought) was a clean hospital and my delivery was supposed to be at Medical City Hospital. I was looking for a final sign on what direction to go with the delivery and when I took my urine sample at the last doctor's office visit, I was disgusted because I - once again- had to place my urine in the small window next to the urine samples of other pregnant women whose samples had not be removed from the window yet. Needless to say, I left that appointment and asked the check out to send my records to Family Birth Services. My midwifes were Esther and April and they were a gem!! They were just as pleasant as my initial phone call to the birth center and they made me feel like they cared about me and my unborn baby like I did. This proved to be the same during the delivery and post giving birth. They both came with gloves and masks and all the safe materials needed when the day came for my baby girl to arrive. Ester made sure to check in on me and give advice on things to help with issues like painful breastfeeding and etc and April was just as knowledgable about information when I asked her. I'm beyond grateful to have listened to my friend's recommendation because a natural birth proved to be the best route that I could've gone as it relates to the treatment, cost, the lack of wear and tear on my body that would've happened under a hospital's supervision, and my overall birthing experience. I would most definitely recommend any woman looking for proper treatment for herself and her baby to use them!

I initially was very against it since this seems so dangerous and outdated but it was a pleasant experience. I convinced my wife to see a regular doctor at first and it was nothing but mistakes and people pointing fingers at each other in the office. Such a contrast with April and our student Esther. Every question answered and helpful from start to finish. Very organized and informative. I learned a lot in the classes held at the midwives location. Just the amount of support we had alone from the midwives was well worth it. We would definitely go this route again should it come to pass. There's no substitute for a mom delivering comfortably at home and these girls made that possible.
