I bought four dining room chairs at a little antique store and quickly realized two of them were falling apart. The joints were loose (or had come completely apart), the cushions were stained, some parts were broken, and this decorative molding was breaking down. I brought it to Miguel at Heartwood Restoration hoping he could patch it up and he did so much more. It is like a completely new piece of furniture, with all the cool things that make it an antique remaining. I couldn't believe the quality of the work. He is more of an artisan than anything - there are few people who are able to do this kind of work anymore. Miguel is one of the finest craftsmen I've ever met, and I've worked with the best. He took a water-damaged and smashed -- but so beloved -- intricately inlaid sultan's chair I inherited from my grandparents and returned it to its original glory. He found mother-of-pearl replacement pieces, carefully carved tiny rosewood insets, and even turned a new mini spindle to replace one that had gone missing. A family heirloom that I thought was irreparable is now a centerpiece of my collection. He spent nearly a year making this chair perfect, and yet the price was unbelievably reasonable. Miguel repaired a white lacquered drop-front secretary desk that had ripped off its hinges. I had been told by another furniture repair place that it was too difficult to repair. Miguel assured me he could handle it - and he absolutely did! Since the piece was very large, he performed the work on-site at my house. Despite the work taking longer than he anticipated, he stuck to his original quote - plus he fixed other small things on the piece that he saw that we hadn't even discussed. Miguel's work is beautiful! He repaired glass doors for my antique book case from the early 1900s and a Victorian oak decanter set. The bookcase needed new glass and to repair the doors. He found two great pieces of glass for the doors. The decanter set was missing some of the decorative brass, was warped on the bottom, and the drawer at the bottom would not stay latched with a spring mechanism. Miguel addressed all of the problems and restored a great piece. On top of all of his great work, Miguel quoted me a great price and completed all the work on the timeline that we discussed. Miguel was a complete professional in repairing some difficult furniture. He was able to customize the solution even though it was an on-site job. I had some siding that had chipped off and the missing piece was not easily replace-able. We found a similar piece that he was able to shape to the exact specifications to fit the missing sheet and it looks like new! He was able to assess the situation and complete the repair within a week and honored the original estimate even though it proved to be a trickier fix than anticipated. Miguel repaired 2 chairs and an antique sewing table. One chair was upholstered and one chair was caned. The upholstered chair had a coil sticking up. The chair came back like new. The caned chair had been sitting in my basement for about 20 years. The parts were coming apart and it needed a lot of work. That chair looks likes it was never broken. The sewing table had a broken handle on it and when I got it back I couldn't believe that the handle looks like it was never broken. Just beautiful work. I spoke with half a dozen restorers before I decided on Miguel and received prices for the work ranging from $375 for machine recaning to $1,200 for hand work. I decided on Miguel because not only did he respond to me promptly but he recognized how nice my chair was. We had a broken hinge on our under-sink kitchen cabinet, and the cabinet frame was cracked. There was no way that I could have repaired this myself. I contacted Miguel via email, and he responded within 15 minutes. After sending him a description of the damage along with a few photos, he quoted me an incredibly low price for the repair. My mom had a Lane Hope Chest from 1954 that had been in her basement for many years. We recently moved Mom to New Jersey and she did not want the Chest. I decided it would be wonderful to have it redone. Miguel did an amazing job. It was a light color (almost a beige) and he put a stain on it that brought out all the rich oak tones. Can't recommend Miguel highly enough for wood refinishing. In addition to our coffee table and end tables and side board which are mid- century designer pieces that needed an updated look, Miguel refinished a table my husband's family purchased in Morocco in the late 1950's. It was worn and stained and we were about to through it out. It wasn't cheap but he really bought this table back to life and its a beautiful piece now that we are enjoying!
