Since this was our first experience with an HVAC issue in a house that's only five years old, we decided to get second and third opinions. We were surprised to find that both other companies identified the same problem during their free evaluations. One technician was even stunned that we had paid over $800 for the same information he provided at no charge. I understand that companies have the right to set their own prices for their services, but after seeing two other technicians diagnose the same issue without an upfront diagnostic fee, it left a sour taste in my mouth. The repair quotes also seemed higher than what we received elsewhere. It's a shame because the technicians themselves made a good impression, and I probably would have continued using this company if the pricing had felt more reasonable and competitive.

That shows integrity and I want to be fair in acknowledging it. Circuit Breaker repaired in electrical panel. I called for a single bad circuit breaker in my 2005 home's panel. I work from home and every time I turn my computer and printer on the breaker was tripping thus I didn't have electricity in my study. I have an electrician or electrical company that I use, but they were out on a large large job and it was going to take them four days to come out here. So I called cool hand electric because I can't afford to not have electricity in my office because I work from home. The technician quoted a "package service" to inspect the breaker and told me they also needed to check all the outlets in that room for chewed wires and other issues for around $1,000 total. I declined the extras and asked only for the breaker to be replaced if confirmed bad. I still paid $512 for what was, in the end, one breaker swap. While here, the same technician told me my panel was "maxed out" and recommended a full panel replacement, quoting roughly $5,400 verbally at my house. The written estimate that came through afterward was $12,672 more than double what was discussed in person. I had a licensed electrician I've used for years review the situation; he confirmed the panel does not need to be replaced and that the pricing is well above market. For context, a 200-amp panel replacement in the DFW area typically runs in the $3,500-$5,500 range from independent licensed electricians, permit and inspection included. This quote is roughly 2-3x that. The high-pressure framing, the "membership required for discounts," the 15-year GoodLeap financing pitch, and the gap between the verbal and written numbers all point to a sales-driven model rather than a service-driven one. I'd encourage anyone who gets a large recommendation from this company to get two or three independent quotes before signing anything.

When questioned about if the unit was at the end of its life span, he told us that the unit seemed fine, and he didn't see why replacement couldn't be put off another few years at the very least. (it has been a year now, and we've had no further problems. We've been using Pape since the early 90's when they had to come out and fix a mess that Wolverton Air had left. Always very professional, and no matter which house we owned at the time they have always considered each call a REPAIR call and not an opportunity to try and talk us into a new unit. That coupled with their reasonable charges is why we don't hesitate to call them. Particularly now, when the unit we currently have has been repaired a few times in the last eight years, and just died again last night. Since it is original to the house, we are pretty sure it is at the end of its service life. But, I have no fear that Pape will not do right by tomorrow when they arrive to check it out.
