We solicited bids from nine different tree services and Mike Hecker, owner of Hecker's Coastal Tree Care, was the hands-down winner in terms of service and price. During the walk-through, he offered a number of value-added additions to our request. These additions were offered at no-cost and included taking down an old fence, trimming out a couple of trees in the front of our house, and an offer to remove a pile of wood inside a shed area. Mike's crew was very professional and completed the removal of eight full-grown trees in a residential neighborhood with houses on all three sides. They ground out all the stumps and got rid of the surface roots too. Along with the tree removals they also trimmed four varieties of full-grown oaks that had never been trimmed before and did an absolutely wonderful job - they look better than we had imagined they could. Mike checked in with his crew regularly and the crew leader was extremely competent. Mike also checked in with me everyday and kept me apprised of all aspects of the project - he was very accessible and I was able to reach him instantly when necessary. A testament to the quality of the work they did is that four of my neighbors will be hiring Mike to do work on their properties also. Two stars because the crew and work is great. Communication, not so much. There were multiple jobs being done at the same time on the same property. Mike was instructed by the homeowner what area to avoid on day 1 so another project could be completed and completely out of their way. There was more than enough space on the 1/4 acre to accommodate the request. On that day, my crew showed up and Mike's crew already had the area covered in branches, despite plenty of open space elsewhere, albeit less convenient. One full day of dump trailer & wages paid... money lost. Came back to finish the job myself two days later, and was unable to retrieve all my material due to the excessive small branches and leaves mixed in. Money lost. At that time, I overheard Mike complimenting his crew on the work. Well deserved, as they were doing a great job! I also heard him say "dont worry about the broken light... it was like that". As the caretaker of the property, I am aware of every aspect of the property and have plenty of extras for repairs. On his way out, I asked Mike which light it was. He begrudgingly said "just one of the bulbs... (insert wrong home owners name) will be fine". I then told him I understand, but I have extra bulbs and would like to make sure they are available to them at the end. He blew me off... clearly uninterested in speaking to me. I then expressed my disappointment in my crew not having access on Day 1 as we were told we would have. It was at this point Mike showed that he was either having a bad day or is clearly threatened by a woman who asks questions and states disappointment. He spouted off with "Well I'm in the business to make money, so sorry if I inconvenienced you". Now, anyone with any couth understands that statement is the complete opposite of an apology. The chauvinism oozing out of Mike was absolutely disgusting. The snide comments and blatant refusal to hold a normal conversation were disappointing from someone who participates in other aspects of our community, especially involving children. He ended up running off, crippled by the expectation of conversation, back to the safety of his van. Gave a fake name when asked... laughable as everyone knows everyone in this small town. If you want your trees taken care of, but don't expect to hold a productive conversation with the owner, Mike is your guy. If you are a woman who understands time/project management and asks questions, stay away... Again, the crew was AWESOME! Polite and efficient. Stacey was especially helpful in communicating with the crew on our behalf and making space for us to pull in. read more

Having returned to my Santa Ynez property after 25 years of renting, I encountered a large number of volunteer trees from the empty lot next door. They were not only infringing on electrical and other cables, but were onto my roof. I also had several trees in my backyard that were needing to be cut back and pruned as they were also too close to the deck. I got two bids on the work, and Mike came in a bit lower than the other person, and with a recommendation I had received from a local, I decided to go with Coastal. They worked two days on my property with a Four Man Crew, and did outstanding work. Although his team was very experienced, Mike was checking on their work every couple of hours, ensuring things were progressing to my satisfaction. Hecker's team took down and chipped two large pepper trees for me last week. One of them leaned over my studio and I was a little nervous about it, but the crew was very talented did a careful, professional job without any problems. The following day they came back and ground out the stumps with an awesome hydraulic grinding machine. I had three bids on the job. They cost 67% less than that of the high bid. read more

Mike Hecker and crew consistently do an outstanding job on our 200 acre estate. We just had them tackle a very precarious 25 year old Alleppo Pine tree (that had succumbed to the bark beetle), hanging over our domestic water cistern. They were able to deftly fell the tree and clean it up without so much as a scratch. We have been using Coastal tree now for a few years, for jobs big and small (huge oaks along our driveway, reshaping centerpiece focal point trees next to the manor, dead tree removals on the back 40, stump grinds etc.) and are always impressed with the speed and professional work the crew does. I had a big ash tree that had roots that caused damage to my patio and were soon going to be causing problems with my house foundation. Mike returned my inquiry to him immediately, came back the next day, cut that thing down and ground up the stump, thus removing that whole situation from my nightmares. Directly under the tree I have a tool shed and it was totally unscathed, which was not the case a few years ago when a different company trimmed the same tree and nearly destroyed the shed in the process. (No, I'm not going to mention that company's name.) Anyway, Heckers also cleaned up super well after they were done - like, I mean my backyard was literally cleaner afterwards. Had to get some dead pines removed. Mike gave me a fair price and was able to get the work done quickly. Both Mike and his crew were friendly and professional. I was impressed by their ability to leave all the young trees and bushes under the dead trees intact. I selected Coastal Tree Care after reading the reviews and talking with Mike. Our 4 foot base diameter pine tree needles had turned brown over a short period of time. The tree was near our property line and both the neighbor and I had items below the tree that we did not want damaged. A PG&E secondary electrical line passed between the branches. Mike and his crew did a great job making our tree disappear without collateral damage, and an unexpected challenge was handled in stride. Street and property cleanup was thorough. I met with Mike and received a quote to trim and shape 3 trees (2 large oaks) and remove a Mulberry tree that was in a very difficult location expanding over 3 other people's property and fences. One of the oak trees was hovering over my garage roof, so needless to say I was a bit nervous to have these 2 trees especially done. Mike was very knowledgeable, giving me several options and recommendations and his quote was competitive with the others that I had received. Mike gave me the date and time that he could arrive. I accepted Mike's quote and he and his 3 man crew arrived exactly on time as we discussed. Mike disseminated his instructions to his crew exactly as we had discussed. He said that this job would most likely take all day and that he would stop back throughout the day to check the progress of his workers, which he did. I can honestly say that Mike's crew of 3 worked harder than any group of workers that I have had do jobs at our house. They went above and beyond what I expected. They not only did a great job but they also finished the job early. They cleared all the branches, leaves, sawdust etc and everything looked spotless. The trees look great and the tree they took down went flawlessly. In summary, I would definitely highly recommend Mike and his crew due to Mike's knowledge, his communication skills with me and his workers, and his great hardworking staff. Called Mike - he came by (Yelp is showing me in San Fran but I am here in Santa Ynez - ??) and gave me a good price to cut down four trees and clean up an overgrown/out-of-control red oak. I usually shop two to three vendors for all work I contract out but Mike's attitude/personality along with his very fair price changed my normal operating procedure.
