I love coming to Mazatlan and trying different restaurants. Hector's is small intimate restaurant with amazing service. We had reservations so we were seated right away and our drink orders were brought to us straight away. The manager came and introduced himself while we were there too. I live to see that. I ordered the saffron risotto with pork shank and I loved it. My husband had to the pork chop and it was sooo undercooked. As a rule, when he sends something back, he won't try anything else. He was disappointed but at least he had the mussels as an appetizer. We were with a big group and that was the only meal that was under done so try something else if you go there. This is very close to the Plaza Machado so enjoy walking the area when you're here. I recommend if you're traveling abroad and want something different from resort / hotel food. read more

Such a great restaurant! Our waiter was so helpful with recommendations and helping us choose wines. I ordered the salmon filet and it was the best ever! My husband ordered the pork chop and said it was excellent. I wish I had written down the name of the wine. I tried a Chardonnay but didn't care for it. He suggested a Sauvignon blanc and it was excellent. Guess I'll just have to go back again! It's a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion or no reason at all. We stopped in for lunch... even then there were only a few tables available!! This is a nice twist to find a contemporary French luncheon place in the heart of Mazatlan! I can't compliment the food enough!!! Seriously delicious! You have to try it if your downtown square. Swear you won't have a disappointment of a meal! Best food I had in Mazatlan. Tho we havent ate at Agathas, this was a fine dining but in Mexican price. We started off with pate and we were very pleased and also so full after this, we could not finish the shrimp pasta and rack of lamb. Therefore, we sadly could not try the sticky pudding. I may have to go back to try. Located in the beautiful section of town, Id say this is quite a fine fining that is about 1/3 the cost of the states but double the pirtion. Traveling to Antigua in June for my TEFL certificate, Hector's Bistro located at 6a Calle Poniete No. 24 became the location that guided me home after a long day of school. Within Hector's Bistro, there is an amazing restaurant, bakery, liquor store, and bar. Almost daily, I went to this location. Being a white girl from Wyoming, not only did the food bring me comfort, but the employees did also. I ordered many items from the menu that were delicious including El Chapin for breakfast, the Fit Chompy y Cheese and Lava Melt for lunch, the steak/veggies/fries and Hector's Mini Burger for dinner, and the wood fired pizza for the days between being able to go to my favorite restaurant. Every dish that was served was made with expertise and the service was impeccable. Attached to Hector's Bistro is the bar, El Deposito. Serving Cerveceria 14 beverages, my favorite was the light and crisp Offshore. This hard seltzer is made by Cerveceria 14, a local Guatemalan company and has a variety of flavors to choose from that all deliver a satisfying sip after a long day. After eating and sipping on a few cocktails, I would purchase additional Offshores to take to my humble abode for the evening while working on hours of homework. Since my first trip in June, I have traveled back and forth between Wyoming and Antigua two additional times. Every time I return, Hector's Bistro is the first place I stop!!! Not only is the establishment amazing, but the people that work there have become my friends and family. Xoshil, the bar manager, welcomed me on day one. She made me feel safe in an unknown world. Fernanda and Shirley, employees in the liquor store, have continuously helped me with the Uber App so that I could get safely back to my home away from home. Christian, the manager of Hector's Bistro, has become like my son. Simply put, while the food and beverages are why I constantly go back, the people that work there are what makes me feel safe as a white single woman maneuvering in Guatemala. Kudos to Hector's Bistro, El Deposito, and all the individuals that truly make it a special place in my heart. P.S. Although the tip is included, reach into your pockets and leave extra GTQ's!!! Hectors is a "go to" dining spot for me when I am in Mazatlan. The food is exceptional, beautifully presented, generous portions and flavorful. In old building just 1 block from Plaza Machado in a warm and upscale atmosphere. I had the tomato soup which was delicious and for a main dish the Argentinian Steak cooked medium just as the chef recommended. I had an apple tart for dessert that came with ice cream. Located just a block off Machado Plaza sits Hector's Bistro. The place has a really cool vibe with great modern art pieces adorning the walls (all for sale). The bar is nice and inviting when you walk inside and a modern wood table decor is throughout with nice sapwood and grain in the tables that makes them visually appealing. The menu here is European inspired (this is not a Mexican food restaurant). We saw Hector visiting with a table and after our meal he explained all of his desserts to us...more on that later. For starters we had both the Italian and European Platter which contained hot sausages, prosciutto goat cheese, pates, mustard, pickles, and bread as well as sundried tomato and balsamic reduction. My favorite as the European as I love pate. Nice presentation and a generous portion make this a good choice to share as a starter. For the main course I had the New Zealand rack of lamb which is coated with a mustard base crust and seasoned well with some salt, pepper and herbs. If you like mint jelly then just ask and they will give you a serving of it. The lamb was cooked medium rare as requested and was very good. Served with a small salad and roasted potatoes this disb satisfied my lamb fix for the evening. For dessert we tried the Molton Lava Cake and Cookies and Cream. The Molten Cake was of the dark chocolate variety which I like much better than the milk chocolate variety which is always super sweet. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream both dishes were very good. The cookies and cream is a thick soft chocolate chip cookie with three times of chocolate chips and it was the favorite of the two desserts. Now for the -1 star. Service tonight was marginal at best. After ordering our main course 4 of the 5 of us at the table got our meals but the simple spaghetti dish didn't come out for nearly 10 minutes after we were all waiting. Thus my lamb got cool and it was frustrating not eating while the other person was waiting, and waiting. Finally the dish did come out hot and was good. Second, after we were given a dessert menu the waiter didn't return until Hector stopped at our table and asked if we ordered dessert to which we said no. He kindly explained all his desserts with passion to which we ended up with the two reviewed above. If the service would of been a little better, food timed better and a bit more attention paid to the table, I would of given it 4.5 earning it a 5. However with the issues sand frustration tonight, it earns a solid 4 stars. I would come back again but with so many great places in Mazatlan it may be a while. 4 stars. read more

I have been here a few times now. This my first review of Hector's Bistro. This time I had the Grilled octopus in aioli, ginger, and English mustard sauce, organic salad, and fried potatoes. The octopus was cooked to a good consistency; firm yet tender. The sauce had a slightly tangy flavor, with just a little bite from the ginger and mustard. The organic salad was good, but the fried potatoes were a bit soft, probably from sitting under the salad. The potato slices fell apart when lifting them from the plate with the fork. They should have been firmer. Overall, delicious though. The penne bolognese was served steaming hot with plenty of melted cheese (I assume Parmesan) on top. The sauce was meaty, yet despite all the cheese, not overly salty. The pasta wasn't too soft or too chewy, but al dente; to me it was just right! I skipped the dessert this time around, but I'll probably be back, if only for their wonderful Creme brulé! read more

Hectors Bistro: a throwback to several other eras. The building is mid 1800s. The music & decor could be NYC a century later. Because I was there alone it would have been easy to seat me at the bar, which is often fine with me. I was in a bit of pain and the gentleman redirected me at a small table, next to a window, where I could see people walking to the plaza a block away. This is a proper place for a romantic or celebratory dinner. I asked to rematch the filet mignon with the Arugula tomato salad (instead of mashed potatoes). The salad was outstanding as was the mushroom covered, bacon wrapped steak! Every time I looked up there was someone ready to see what I needed. I could not have asked for a better experience. $350mn for Filet Mignon and a Pacifico, seems well priced to me! I do wish I had asked about their wine list... another time! read more

I really loved this place; this is not a tourist trap, rather a place where locals hang out, let me rephrase it , its a place where gringos hang out, still it's a great place. First of all everyone speaks English which is a big help. The food is outstanding, its like being in Europe by the way of Mazatlán. We started of with French platter and that was the best chicken liver pate I've ever had, flavorful and fresh. As a main course had the pastrami ruben which was to die for ( and I'm someone who's had his share of NYC Jewish delicatessen ) , and the sea bass, which was so fresh that you can taste the ocean on that dish. The wine list was extensive and well put together . If you are in Mazatlán you HAVE to try this place , its a must read more

Had the opportunity to check out this place with family and a local friend. Super cute and quaint spot adorned with cool accents and lovely art. They have three menus, one two sided ( one side Spanish the other side English)antipasti and main course, a wine menu, and a signature drink menu. We ordered the French pate with was very good. Our drinks, jack doubled, red wine, and something called a pineapple smash was good too. My entree was lamb chops which came out undercooked after I requested medium well and when they returned were over cooked and dry. I know lamb is better on the raw side, but I'm leery about eating raw or under cooked meats when out of the country (I'm from the us). The potatoes and bread good as well. Hubby's steak was ok, the accompanying mushroom risotto was kinda mushy, not sure if that's how it was supposed to be, but it was different from what I'm used too. My mom had a sandwich that she loved. My dessert.. the sticky toffee pudding was so good... The rest of our party had the thin apple tart with ice cream that they enjoyed. This place looses one or one 1/2 stars on service. The waiters weren't very accommodating and would ask for our orders for some and not the others. And in most restaurants the ladies usually get to order first and that was not the case. The main chef/owner was at our table giving wonderful explanations of food and dessert but we couldn't get our beverages refilled. Very disappointed after reading reviews. We had the mussels that had a good broth that were over cooked, smoked marlin that had a weird tasting oil (maybe old). If you want to treat yourself to high quality European food, this is the place. The service was fast, but not hasty. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the drink menu, food, and ingredients. He even told us the secret to the roasted veggies - all organic! Something to be appreciated was the space the wait staff gave us to eat, we were able to eat, chat, and drink with no pressure to get out and leave. The food was on another level. 100% recommend the Argentinean steak. Not dense or over cooked at all, honestly best steak ive ever eaten. Something lighter, or perhaps for the pescatarians, the tuna was seared lightly with a black pepper crust. The fish was pink, easy to cut into, and had no overcooked fish taste, as so many times seared tuna does. We celebrated my wife's last birthday at Hector's and it was an all-out excellent experience. We had several appetizers shared by all that were so good we ordered a second round. The entrees were varied and each one was excellent. Then we ordered desserts shared by all and they were as good as the first two courses. The service was better than superb. Waiters were attentive and prompt to respond, going beyond the frequent standard of taking and delivering the orders. Then we got the bill for all and it was incredibly reasonable, surprisingly low. A real value for the price and an all-around fantastic experience. I highly recommend Hector's to all. read more

After a great night at La Casa Country (another review) , we asked our waitress of 20 years for her recommendation for a restaurant in town and she suggested Hectors Bistro in old town. The streets are all torn up in a major rebuilding project and she warned us that it would be a longer ride and not to use a pulmonia (a modified open air taxi/golf cart) for this trip. She was spot on. Hector Bistro is a smaller restaurant with an upscale vibe inside; displays eclectic artwork on all the walls. A bar in the center of the room keeps the atmosphere upscale casual. The menu offers shrimp, pastas, steaks, fish, lamb....you get the picture. There is something for everyone. FYI, I do not find this place child friendly. We started with tuna capprecio. Very fresh with arrugala topping servered with squaw bread. We knew at that point we were in for a treat. The dish was seasoned with a lemon based oil and vinegar dressing. I had the waiter recomend ravioli. Perfectly cooked raviolis topped with a wonderfully sweet seasoned tomato sauce and cherry tomatoes. So good I mopped up the last of my sauce with my bread. My better half had shrimp risotto. This dish was wonderful to eat, but a bit heavy to finish especially if you want one of the12 deserts they offer....and you do. Sticky pudding was the recomended choice. A pudding based cake with fresh caramel topping and a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Add a perfect espresso and you understand the 5 star rating. If I had one concern it was our service as they got busier we became more transparent. Here is the best part. Drinks, starter, dinner and desert.............$55. Just go!!! read more

Ok so 2 five star ratings in a row while in Mazatlan... maybe this city has a secret for their restaurant industry the rest of the world should figure out. I had the grilled swordfish which was as perfection. The firmness remained and the flavor profile was perfect. The grilled tomato, olive, and basil topping provided a complexity that balanced so perfectly with the mild smokiness from the grill. Located just a block from one of the best walking areas and staffed with folks who know what service means and well this is why Hectors is top 5 in Mazatlan. We have been coming to Mazatlan for 20 years spending three weeks each time. We always try a new restaurant each week and Hectors was our favorite this time. Try the house salad of mixed greens (not the bagged junk) with the pesto dressing. Simply the best salad I have ever had. Next was the Argentine steak served a perfect medium rare. Finish up with the sticky pudding and you have the perfect meal. The owner/chef visits the patrons which is a nice touch and informative. Mazatlan is undergoing a major renovation with lots of construction all over town. Finding your way to the restaurant using an uninformed pulmonia driver could get you a nice around about ride.
