I had an appointment here because of the location near home, my hair is short and curly and I was assigned to a afroa american young lady "specialist in curly hair" and she gave me the WORSE TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! She did the worse of the worse haircut I have had in my life and left crying! she really put a strong effort to make my hair looking at its worse, I had send an email to the manager and they did not offer anything in return! I totally feel like I got gouged, yes my hair looks good but with a ver very expensive price tag .. the same service I've received elsewhere in the past cost me double here .. highlighted root touch up with shadowed roots and toner .. minimal cut all said and done $438.00 WTF at this price I can't say I'll be a return customer.. when I received the receipt the long list a random things i was paying for including the $98.00 to trim my bangs and blend the front of my hair, not even a full haircut. This is probably my 20th visit here, but my first check in. HedKandi salon is hands down the best in the city. Many my my friends, including my wife are frequent regulars here and there is very little to complain about. I am now working in the Beltline, so having HedKandi open in Hotel Arts has been just fantastic. It is a lively place with loads of staff. They somehow manage to do a ton of color work and it never smells bad, which is great! I also really like it for the specialists they have for men. This place generally has 3 or more men in chairs, proving this place is well tailored for the guys. I visit Lindsay, who is a bubbly, funky girl and is just fantastic with putting in the effort with my difficult curly hair. She listens and provides advice, but doesn't simply make a decision based on her tastes. I highly recommend going here, just beware that this is a good salon, not a cheap one. read more

I had never EVER dyed or highlighted my hair until yesterday. Mai, my stylist was really patient and helping with me being a first timer. She showed me different styles over the Internet and told me how are we about to go through the whole process. She was very friendly and listened to all of my concerns and answered them with utmost calmness. Ofcourse I was all paranoid of how it is going to turn out and all, but Mai was very cool that way. Their salon is in great condition and the shampoo bar is amazing. Michelle shampooed and toned my hair and she helped Mai in blow drying my hair after too. The staff is very friendly and the location and is clean and spacious. Mai, was amazing, for a first timer like me , so if you really know what you want , she would be perfect. I had scheduled an appointment at Hed Kandi bankers hall, and once I got there I wasn't welcomed like the other guests. I was told that I had cancelled my appointment and that they didn't have a slot open for me, I explained to them that I never called to cancel and that I've already taken the morning off to come in as well as paid for parking. After a while, they figured out that they had another woman in the system with my name and when they called to confirm my appointment with her she cancelled. I tried to explain to them that this wasn't my fault and that taking an extra hour and a half to see me is very unprofessional. The receptionist told me that they can only offer me $20 off and when I asked to speak to the manager she said she can't give out her information and that if the manager wants to speak with me, she will call me. I felt highly disrespected and like I was just another number at their salon, there was no understanding of the situation. As well, other guests were welcomed and asked questions regarding COVID -19 and offered a new face mask while I was not. I would not recommend going here, especially if you are a woman of colour as I was noticeably treated differently. As well, my previous experience here, my hair was cut unevenly by one of the hair cutters so I think my time of going into Hed Kandi has come to a finish. Only good things to say about this salon, my regular stylist cancelled last minute and I needed my hair done before my trip out of town. Hedkandi was able to get me in the same night due to a cancellation. I told my stylist Courtney that I wanted to go as blonde as possible, she really listened and gave my lots of highlights and put lightener in between the foils. Initially I wasn't crazy about my haircut, but it makes my hair feel much thicker and fuller so I've come around. I've never been this happy with my hair and the prices are so great for the services! The lady at the front was also super welcoming. I'm definitely making this salon my new regular salon! read more

I just got my hair cut and coloured at this salon and I am so impressed. The girls at the front desk were very friendly and showed me to the room where I could hang up my jacket and put on a robe to protect my clothing. My stylist Lindsay greeted me right on time. She was very friendly and is clearly very good at what she does. They canceled my appointment half an hour before it was meant to be. I live about half an hour's drive away via Deerfoot. Of course I was already on the road when they called and could only check that message when I was practically there! The reason given was the prior client was having an issue with her haircut. I made this appointment at this time as I have a busy week coming up and was looking forward to my usual good haircut there..not surprisingly, they didn't have any stylists free elsewhere to honour my appointment. And that was it. The receptionist felt terrible of course and I kept polite because she was just the messenger. But when I stated we are supposed to give THEM sufficient cancelation notice but they're not supposed to with US? She said that wasn't true and that we can cancel anytime...Just for everyone's information. I barely managed a goodbye after that. No apology for my wasted time and resources. No compensation for the high blood pressure pills and deep breathing classes I require.. Hed Kandi is the kind of business that is unprepared to deal with problems that are to be expected and will fault their other clients to make up for their mistakes. I've been going to hedkandi for a while because they are close to my office and I value my time. The problem is, hedkandi staff does not. Last time I went in my hair was cut so crookied I was stopped on the street. I went back in, lost another inch and had it fixed over an hour. The staff correcting it were great. I figured it was a one off and booked another appointment because I really liked how she coloured my hair. I booked another appointment but when I showed up their was as admin error and they didn't have time to see me. I rescheduled another appointment and after waiting 30 minutes I left without being seen. Three strikes. I feel stupid I tried three times thinking that it was easier on my time, when In fact, they clearly don't value my time or patronage at all. read more

Amazing salon!! I went to the one on 13th Ave (Hotel Arts) and I had such a great experience. I have HUGE trust issues when it comes to getting my hair done due to horrible experiences so I was obviously nervous about it. But when I walked inside I was amazed by how beautiful the salon is, how friendly all the workers are, and how clean it is. I got a cut and colour done by Kelsey, I absolutely love it and her! Been to two different hair dressers, Kelly and Lindsay, both very professional and sweet girls. After my last visit, I went back three days later because I wasn't satisfied with the root color. Since I paid over $200 I wanted to go back and talk about it, even if I felt a little uncomfortable to do it. I immediately told the girl in the reception that this is not a complaint about the hair dresser - it was me who made a bad decision. I thought my hair would look different. She was not understanding at all and had a very cold attitude. Since it was me and not the hairdresser who did something wrong, she told me I have to pay full price, about $130, to get it fixed. Fine! If that's Hedkandi's policy - even if I find it strange to at least not get a discount - but at least treat me well. Hedkandi loves me not! read more

I first saw Chantelle Gilmour at Butter Beauty Bar and then followed her to Hedkandi to get colour done before my wedding. As a virgin to hair dye, I was very nervous but Chantelle did a FANTASTIC job. She explains everything she is doing during the process and really takes her time to ensure the job is perfect and you are happy. She even teaches little hair tricks that can be used at home. She also gave me a very minor TRIM and not a CUT. This is a big deal for me since I was previously traumatized by the length a scissor happy hairdresser took off because I love having longer locks. I'm now transitioning from being a darker brunette to a blonde belayage, which Chantelle refuses to do quickly because of potential damage/hair loss. A couple of my gfs continuously recommended Hedkandi and I'm the one who ALWAYS holds off on booking haircuts and trims, it's just my bad habit. I don't know...I find it a nuisance booking an appointment, sitting there, watching your lovely locks get chopped :( I figured it was time as I was constantly picking at my dead ends and splitting my split ends, it came to the point where I was at work and my hair literally got in the way. I finally decided to go actually book an appointment and go. I booked on a weekday at 6PM (they close at 9PM on weekdays) and drove straight from work. I arrived early - parked underground at Hotel Arts for a fee ($7.50) otherwise, after 6PM street parking is free. When I walked in, I was warmly welcomed at the front! I told the receptionist when my appointment was and she showed me the coat room and handed me a wrap to put on, then she pointed to the seating area, offered me something to drink and I got comfy. I looked around and notice how simple yet trendy the décor was as well as how spacious the salon is. Bright white - so classy, not to mention the bowl of suckers and double bubble, um yes please.... you can help yourself! I was originally suppose to see a specific stylist but things got mixed up and Kurt came to greet me. I was a little confused at first as my gfs recommended a girl but I went with the flow and realized that things get mix up sometimes. Kurt was happy to take me and brought me over to his chair. He played with my hair and asked what I wanted - we both said my hair was blahhh and it was definitely due for a cut. We went over to get a wash and a lovely lovely head massage, sooo nice and relaxing. He knew exactly what I wanted so I let him do his magic. Cut cut here cut cut there....Kurt knew what he was doing for sure. He even used some techniques I've never had done to my hair before. I wanted layers and some shape and that's exactly what he did. He dried and asked how I wanted my hair to be styled. I wanted some loose curls and that's just what he did. When he was done, I was smiling from ear to ear as my hair felt light, healthier and it was super cute! I would recommend Kurt at Hedkandi to anyone. Another bonus with visiting Hedkandi, is that if you refer someone - they get $20 off their cut AND YOU get $20 off your next visit. Make sure you take their name so they know who referred you etc.. I just moved to Calgary in August with hair down to my mid-back and after three bad stylists, I called Hedkandi with my sob-story and they hooked me up with Rachelle. The second she looked at my hair and listened to my frustration, she was able to explain how she would fix it, according to pictures I showed her and a rookie description from me. I wanted a cut and color but after further inspection she said she wouldn't have time to do both well in that short of time so she scheduled me in FOR HER DAY OFF to do my color. I will say I wasn't sure about the cut at first, but a great cut proves itself when you have to style it yourself. My hair lays so beautifully and has that polished looked I like. And the color! Holy frijoles! I've been every color imaginable and many different shades of red, but this red is my hands-down favorite. Rachelle spent her day of lifting color and reapplying until it looked perfect. I am so happy with my hair and with my new hair home. read more

I am not even giving them one star, as what I'm upset about is not just the incompetency of the stylist (Mai) but more importantly their poor customer service and their inability to communicate properly. I went to the Hotel Arts location few days ago for extensions, prior to that I had a consultation about the color and the style with the stylist. My natural hair has ombre and I needed to remove my old extensions and apply new ones consistent with my brown ombre. The result did not turn out the way I expected (for $1200) so I decided to reach out to the stylist about how she can fix it (nothing about the money), that drawn out conversation put me in the hospital for hypertensive urgency. Then I decided to escalate and talk to the manager but apparently for all three locations there's only "one" manager (Michelle) and she was no where to be found all day long. In the end the management's approach in response to my request was very unprofessional and aggressive/violent and I recommend everyone to choose a more respectful and professional establishment for such expensive services. Oh by the way the place looked as if it's gone through a massive sandstorm, they need to dust! -------------- UPDATE: I had a chance to show my hair to a number of extension professionals in Calgary (more than I can say about hedkandy) and they all agreed on one thing that the extensions that were applied to my hair were of the cheapest quality and the highest price (shocking!) read more

I have always had issues with getting a great haircut, the kind that you can do whatever you like with it, my hair is pretty thick, wavy, so not much luck here... I decided to try Hedkandi last year and has been going there ever since, Chrissy who cuts and does my hair is the best. She really understands and knows what to do with my hair and I have to say before I always felt like I had to use the iron and make it as flat as possible, but now it looks great curly, straight, up or down, I love my haircut. read more

I had an appointment with Lindsay on the 24th January, and although it was a few weeks ago now I have been meaning to write a review. First Up the team at the front were super friendly when I arrived which is something I really notice being that I am a front desk host at a beauty salon myself! I was a bit nervous because this was the first time I've had my hair done by anyone I didn't know in 4 years and Im used to working in a salon environment so I know how hairdressers can be BUT Lindsay was amazing!! she was so friendly and accommodating, she didn't make me feel intimidated at all and even though I was her last appointment of a very long day she took the time to chat with me and give me her full attention. Im really really happy with my haircut and even though it was a simple trim I still feel like it was a total transformation, weeks later it is still as easy to maintain as it was when I first had it done. Great place, went here for the first time a couple days ago. The salon is kept very clean, has a great look, and everyone was very friendly! It's a bit on the pricey side, but for the look I wanted (balayage) I'd say it was worth it over cheaper salons that may not have been able to do what I wanted with a good blending of colours. As a woman with short curly hair, I have the worst time finding stylists who can really cope with curly hair, and aren't afraid to cut my hair as short as I ask for. Chantelle can cut hair across the spectrum from straight to 4C black hair, and did everything I asked for, and even suggested a few things that I was thrilled with. I've had nothing but compliments since walking out of the salon two days ago. Love the Bumble and Bumble products, loved Chantelle's warm, down-to-earth presence, loved the non-gendered pricing (I find it upsetting when I've got hair as short as most guys and get upcharged for being female) and best of all, loved the haircut. I've never really liked my hair after walking out of a hair salon. I've searched long and hard to find the perfect hair artist and i finally found Rachelle. My hair is super long, thick, wavy, dry and almost black. Rachelle gave me the most amazing ombre look .Every time i go in, she adds a new hue of blonde that gives me hair an amazing blend of caramels, chocolate and blondes. I get compliments all the time on my hair. She also thinned out my hair and gave me these beautiful layers and styled me so i walked out looking like a bombshell. Hedkandi is really good at marketing, but the stylists are overworked and too busy to put care into their work. I've gone there a handful of times over the past two years and the stylists end up sloughing me off onto their assistant, because they have to attend to another client that overlaps with me. The assistants I've encountered had the same skill level as the students at the Aveda Institute (for which I wouldn't pay Hedkandi prices), they didn't know how to style my hair whatsoever. I have curly hair, nothing too crazy just curly, and they didn't know the first thing about curly hair. I got colour the last time I went and it got brassy about one week after my appointment, I paid over $200 for colour that looks like I did it myself at home with a box of bleach, it's not a good look. The business part of the salon seems to have overrun the care and quality part, in my opinion. read more

Started off great! The quality decreased with each visit. Once, they even kept me waiting 40 minutes for my booked appointment. This last visit my stylist was having a lazy day (ok, we all have those at work), but she butchered my hair. My ends look like I took a pair of kitchen scissors and did it myself while drunk. I was a client at Hedkandi for over a year as I transitioned from brown to blonde. It wasn't until my last appointment where my experience changed and after this I know I will never go back. My base was shifted and turned into a stubborn orange that I have had to spend hundreds trying to correct. My hair is damaged to the point where it is snapping off and I'm devastated. Considering I am not a hair stylist I never knew that shifting my base would have this impact on my hair. This is not what I expected from Hedkandi and it is simply not what I had paid for. After spending over a thousand dollars at Hedkandi over this past year I never thought I would have to spend MORE to correct it. After all my frustration and disappointment I requested a refund for the cost of my service so I could put it towards correcting my colour and bringing my hair back to life but Hedkandi refused. I brought many of my friends to Hedkandi and after sharing my experience we will not be returning, nor will I ever recommend this salon to anyone else. It simply is NOT worth the price. read more

I probably wouldn't return. I paid over $65 for a haircut, and I didn't get any kind of style which I have never experienced in the many salons I've been to - I have always received either a flat iron or curl at the end of my appointment at any other salon. I had a cut and a blow dry and was sent on my way, and the next client was in the chair seconds after I left. Felt very rushed and felt like the proper time was not put in to giving me a good experience. I have very thick and frizzy hair so just a blow dry is never enough, and when paying over $65 you expect a bit more than a chop, dry and bye! I am at work now with my hair in a ponytail because I could not leave it down in the state it was in, which isn't really what you want after getting a fresh haircut. I tried a hair half back attempt but turns out the bottom part of my hair isn't even so I am going to have to get that fixed, which probably wouldn't have been overlooked if we had more time or when straightening/curling layers of my hair. Everyone was nice, including my stylist, and the salon itself is very nice (Bankers Hall Location), I would perhaps advise giving a bit more time to each appointment so that there is a proper chance to give the client a good cut and style and to ensure they are looking their best when they leave! (I honestly think there were good intentions but perhaps appointments were scheduled too close - my appt was 1 hour which is the quickest appt I have ever had, I am usually in the chair for 1 hr and 15-20 mis). Either that or lowering prices, because what I got today felt like I could have had the same for $20 at First Choice Haircutters. Nice friendly people and atmosphere. Unfortunately can't express my disappointment and disbelief in the stylists interpretation of my explicit direction. Didn't ask for a freestyle new age cut. Should have stayed with the disinterested but respectful staff at Chatters. Half the price and no buyer regret. The old saying that the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is two weeks doesn't apply here. The hair it took me two years to grow out gone at the young ladies whim. Oh well. Poor customer service. Admittedly I lost track of time and received a phone call asking me about the appointment. I asked if they still had time for me, they asked how long until I could be there, I said 5 minutes and was told that was acceptable. I got there 6 minutes later (after running my arse off to get there and throwing a half eaten sandwich in the garbage by the canada post) only to be told they had no time for me. Once you're 15 minutes late they cancel the appointment, which is fine. That info would have been great to have BEFORE I left to go there. Considering the amount of time these guys have been in business and the clientele they deal with at their bankers hall location you would think that they could be a little more forth coming with their timing expectations especially when you call me to discuss that exact issue. While their customer service was great, my experience was not. I went in to get my roots touched up. My hair is normally dark brown and I had recently (6 weeks before) gone blonde. I left with a huge chunk of the back of my hair CRACKED OFF AT THE ROOT because the stylish overlapped the bleach. I currently have a large tuft of cracked off spikes at the crown of my head. It's incredibly difficult to cover and embarrassing. I'm completely devastated. I've called the salon several times in an attempt to speak to the manager and have left messages but no one has called me back. At the time that it happened, I was in shock and paid for it because the stylist told me that it was my hair that didn't agree with being blonde. I've since spoken to several stylists and they all came to the same consensus: it was the stylist's fault for overlapping the bleach. I believe it's referred to as a "chemical haircut". I will never go there again and I have been telling anyone who will listen about this terrible experience. read more
