I come to Purple Jade when ever I come to town and tell Jade it's worth the 12 hour drive. The on line booking was easy to use, the availability of a Saturday appointment with 2 weeks notice was convenient, the salon is clean and pleasant. The star is Jade and her expert hair cut - after a consultation which was kind but also suggested how my hair could be even better with a slightly better design, and a colour correcting shampoo she performed precision art to perfectly cut every single hair on my head. If she thinks something will not work for your hair, she will explain why & what sort of styles would be best for your type of hair. Not only do you get a great cut, she tells you how to keep your hair healthy, products to use & ones not to use on your hair (at no extra cost). I found her over a year ago, have since moved; and still go the 20 minute drive just for her. I've heard the other girls are just as good. Did I mention they have reasonable prices too. No, they're not as cheap as the big box companies like ultra cuts or first choice; but there is a reason why they are that low. I chose this salon based on the reviews here. For her birthday, my granddaughter (M) wanted blue tips on her hair (pre-approved by dad). I contacted Jade via Yelp and told them that. The response was quick and she wanted to know how long her hair was etc. She did want us to come in for a consultation, but we live north of Red Deer, so that wasn't an option - we were only going to be in Calgary for a few days.. I did send her a picture of M so she could see her hair. She said $50 for the cut and that the cost of the colour would depend on if it had to be bleached first etc. I told her M had a budget of $100 and to book her in. I saw other ladies had received cut & colour for $65, so $100 should cover whatever had to be done. Service We were warmly greeted by a young man who took M to a chair. I can't remember his name, so let's go with B. Throughout the experience, he was very friendly. Two other ladies were working, and I assume the one was Jade. Colour and Price B advised me that he would have to bleach the bottom of her hair first, which I approved, thinking it may go a bit over the $100, but that I could live with it. He showed us both the only "blue" they had, which looked quite purple. M said it was okay with her, only because she really wanted it coloured and was hoping it would look more blue once it was in. When he went to the back, the lady I assume was Jade followed him. When he returned, he told me the price w/b $200 because her hair was long and because of the bleach. Since only the ends were being done, not sure why length mattered? Anyway, I couldn't ruin M's day by arguing or walking out, so I said no problem. Results Blue? Nope, it was actually royal purple, EXACTLY the same shade as their purple capes. I paid, thinking maybe M was okay with it. After we left, M was very quiet. She finally told me she hated the purple, he didn't shampoo her hair, the purple part was "crunchy", and the cut was really crooked. I checked, and she was right. I hadn't noticed that he didn't even shampoo her hair. I get my hair coloured all the time, and my stylist would NEVER let me leave her salon without a shampoo. As for the cut, there were chunks that were about an inch longer than the rest. At one point, he had asked if she wanted it "more natural" or a blunt cut, straight across. She said straight across. I wonder if he wanted the "more natural" look because he can't cut straight? I will say he did a good job blending the colour up into her hair. End of Story When we got home, I bought some BLUE colour and all the tools for it, including a cape. $54 later, she sat in my garage and let me redo the colour. I did okay for a grandma, leaving some of the purple so it looked intentional. I trimmed off the really obvious pieces of hair. I know the cut is still bad, so next time she comes for a visit, I will take her to a good salon and get it fixed. I don't know how to post pictures here, but I do have some Before & Afters. The two biggest disappointments I have are these: 1. If B is inexperienced, why wasn't Jade checking his work? 2. I messaged Jade, telling her how disappointed I was. I did not get a response at all. Nothing. B's personality and the way the colour was blended were the only positives. The entire experience broke my heart. I spent $200 that resulted in M being sad, disappointed, and embarrassed of her hair. The whole point was to make her feel pretty and have a great day. Shame on you, Jade, for not even caring enough to respond to me. That is the reason I am posting this review. read more

I wasn't really sure what I wanted and I was really nervous but the stylist was amazing! She made it so enjoyable and took extra time to teach me how to take care of my hair to get the same look I had leaving the salon. It's been about a week and when I use her tips, it looks just as good as the day I got it cut and styled! read more

I recently went to Purple Jade expecting the reviews to be glorified, but was proven wrong. My main stylist was Yuya, who was as gentle as the other reviews about him say he is, and a great conversationalist. It was obvious that he paid great attention to detail with his thorough checks of which colours I'd want as well as making choices to combat fading. My best example of that was the fact that there was no pink dye when I went, but Yuya mixed multiple shades of pink until I found the one I was looking for. Both Jade and Yuya were patient and absolutely phenomenal stylists. Considering my ombré dye job was difficult and took nine hours of their time, the amount I paid was insanely reasonable. Both are hospitable and very amiable. If you're looking for a review to help make up your mind, let this be the one because you will not regret it. read more

I had an appointment at 2:30pm. I drove 28 minutes to get there. On arriving, I was told my hairdresser was not in today and did I not get the e-mail stating this. No, I did not receive an e-mail. In a case like this I think a phone call would be the best option. I would never recommend this place. Their customer service is awful. read more

Last weekend I stopped in to get my son's hair cut. The place had a new name, a new owner, and (mostly) the same staff. Prices have gone up a bit since two years ago, but service remains top notch. It's $20 plus tax for a haircut, but that's now for a man-sized teenage boy, with a quick shampoo and styling included. Still a good value IMO. read more

My hair is super fine, so it takes a really patient hairdresser to roll up my hair for a perm. All the staff are friendly, chatty, and efficient. Now they've got an answering service(so the ladies don't have to be distracted from their clients to answer the phone) and you can also book an appointment online. I was very pleased with my recent experience here! I needed a haircut badly, and was looking for a place near my home that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I had read the reviews for Purple Jade, checked their prices (which were significantly lower than most other salons), liked what I saw "on paper," so I decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did! I got an appointment the same day I called, and was scheduled with Yuya. We discussed what I wanted (I have a lot of thick, wavy, greying hair with a mind of it's own), and then he went to work. He was very meticulous and thorough, and the results were fantastic! My hair turned out exactly as I wanted, and even after washing it at home and letting it do it's own thing (which is the ultimate test for my unruly mop), it's kept it's style beautifully. The staff was pleasant and friendly, the shop was clean and bright, and Yuya was not only skilled, but very amiable too. I will be making this salon my regular from now on. Whenever I come in and try something new all I have to do is show a picture and Jade will give her absolute honest opinion on it. She will let me know if the colour is right for my hair, if the hair style is right for my age and face shape, and if it won't work she'll offer other suggestions. Decided to pop by because it popped up on Google with a quick easy search and I'm extremely pleased to say that it exceeded my expectation far more than I could have hoped for. The staff are all extremely respectful and well trained, the pricing is set reasonably and going through haircuts does not consume too much of your time but still provides an excellent result.
