Presently, while hubs and I have been spending more time in Woodstock on the weekends since the late part of June, we see the need to support the local bounty that surrounds us and the best way to eat from farm to fork. If this isn't enough, these folks also carry a small collection of home products made by independent makers. Migliorelli is all about veggies and fruits- so the cheeses, milk, yogurt and pastries you see when you come here, are sourced from partnering dairy farms. In spite of that, I still picked up Gruyère, Parmesan, other cheeses and milk. Fish and other seafood are sold on weekends. I've heard and read two different stories about how they source their seafood. Is it locally caught? Not sure. Actually, don't think so. I'm not completely bothered by it. The young ladies here are helpful and if you have any questions about something, speak up. Prices reflect the Catskills- but you won't break your wallet. When I come here, I know I can stock up my pantry and fridge with ease and freshness.

So, I decided to come out and take a look. The gentleman working there had a wonderful Brooklyn accent. I asked him if he was Vinny, and his response was, "We're all Vinny. How ya doin''? They have a good amount of cheeses and baked goods, among other things. I asked if they currently had apple cider donuts, but unfortunately they didn't. Instead, I bought a five pack of apple fritters. To me, they seemed more like Apple filled jelly, donuts, than apple, fritters, but they were still absolutely delicious! Tender, with plenty of apple filling. I also got some apple cider, which was wonderful, and, based on the sign on the outside of the stand, I bought a smoked trout. It was so good. The chickens are laying, so hustle to the market early so you can snatch yours up (if the Pleasantville Farmers' Market is any indication, the eggs sell out fast!). I recently tried one of their chickens when I realized they bring them FRESH to the market. They are pricey, but they are fresh, beautiful, and taste unbelievable-- unlike any chicken I've ever eaten. Anyway, their farming methods are what they refer to as "biodynamic," (organic, sustainable, and all that good stuff!) and you can find out more if you look at their website. Michael Pollan would approve. The animals are humanely raised and treated well-- the proof is in the pudding.

We ran into a bit of a snag when the butcher had accidentally with-held one of our 3 boxes of beef. It took a while to straighten it out, but in the end Cecille drove a few hours to our doorstep to deliver it along with some money back and a sincere apology. This is one of those instances where the handling of the problem made the business look better than if there weren't one to begin with. The only other small issue you may look out for is that some of the packages had a little moisture int them. Double sealing them and using them first is our plan. We're hoping that they go Certified Organic by next year for our next order as they said they are hoping to do. After all was said and done we are happy customers!

To the people complaining about the prices; this is a small business that doesn't have corporate sponsorship or the ability to buy big box store quantities resulting in slightly higher prices, but very much improved quality. To the people complaining about the service; when I was there shopping there were only two people working, which as an adult who works in retail customer service understands, just because it's not busy inside, it doesn't mean the worker's are not busy. I highly recommend Black Horse Farm for great plants, delicious baked goods, and friendly local service. I even want to mention that when it comes to customer service, one of the employees overheard me talking about Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and when I mentioned they didn't have any, they went to the back and got one for me that was still cooling; that's customer service. So, if you are someone who appreciates the nuance of shopping local, I can not recommend Black Horse Farm enough, but if you're a whiny adult who needs their hand held at all times while shopping, and gets offended with someone quickly answering a question while continuing to do their work (again, small staff but still lots of work to do), perhaps you should go to a corporate big box store. Me, I know where I'm going, and it's to Black Horse Farm!

To everyone bitching about the prices, it's called gentrification, if you don't like it, stop moving here, flipping houses into overpriced Airbnb vacation spots. Some of my favorite business owners are gruff. That's how you stay in business. You stand your ground while people give you one star reviews for literally surviving this life. Get over yourself.
