There are produce stands a plenty in the area, and many laid out more attractively than this very rustic farm stand. However! The homemade pies here stand out from all the other ones. They don't come wrapped in plastic and stamped with a label. You really have no idea who makes these or what allergens might be in there! There's just a small, handwritten script label of the pie flavor. And according to long-time owner Norman, some nice old ladies make these pies for him and the no frills packaging and cursive scrawl would support this! The flavors range from blueberry, cherry, apple, strawberry rhubarb, and berries of the forest. The latter two are my faves. The pie lattice is SUPREME! Even my very skilled baker friend commented on this when I shared a slice with her. The filling is fruity, though sometimes you get more sauce than fruit chunks. Still that doesn't stop me from devouring this delicious creation.

We receive a big ol' bag of veggies every other week from May-November and the price cannot be beat. The vegetables are organic and they're always super fresh and tasty. Every once in a while, you will have the option to add on a jar of honey or a special prepared food dish to your share and they will deliver it right to your office with your share. I've shopped around for other CSAs and find that the price of the Katchkie share is extremely affordable compared to other farms that will charge upwards of $700 per season. If you ever have any questions or concerns, the NYC-based staff that organizes the CSA program is friendly and responsive. Love Katchkie Farm-- so sad this CSA season is over and can't wait for next Spring!

Not to mention there were had no clue who to pay and how one would get change back if they didn't have small bills. There was a side path right next to the farm where some cars were parked, so I thought maybe the path would lead me to another larger part of the farm down the hill and maybe that's the part that is open. I drive down and realized this was not open to the public. Still quite confused, but tried finding my way out with the minimal service I had. Before I knew it, this old lady comes up to my window and tells me this is private property. I acknowledged it and explained I'm trying to map my way out but with limited service. She was rude and unpleasant, responded with "you could turn right back around because you're trespassing." I told her I thought this was another portion of the farm that was open since the stall uphill didn't appear open. She gave a dirty look and told me to leave. Upon going back up and still trying to map my way to a different farmer's market is ACTUALLY open, these 2 girls came and also quite confused as to whom to make payments to for the tomatoes they picked up. They eventually left and didn't buy anything. So, clearly everyone is confused with the "Open 10-5pm" sign. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone.

Their stand is small and sometimes it is staffed, sometimes it is on the honor system (which I have heard doesn't always work well for the Bulich's). They only sell what they grow and you can see the farm right there behind the stand. Ron, the owner is super nice and helpful. His prices are the best and the veg & fruits are amazing! I've also seen them at local markets including Coxsackie, Troy and Delmar - always the best prices there too. The review from Jennifer J. in 2020 confuses me since I know that the stand never opens until June during a regular year, and def. during the covid outbreak it was closed then as were the markets. Maybe she confused them with another farm or was one of those disgruntled people who got caught not honoring the honor system at one time.

To the people complaining about the prices; this is a small business that doesn't have corporate sponsorship or the ability to buy big box store quantities resulting in slightly higher prices, but very much improved quality. To the people complaining about the service; when I was there shopping there were only two people working, which as an adult who works in retail customer service understands, just because it's not busy inside, it doesn't mean the worker's are not busy. I highly recommend Black Horse Farm for great plants, delicious baked goods, and friendly local service. I even want to mention that when it comes to customer service, one of the employees overheard me talking about Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and when I mentioned they didn't have any, they went to the back and got one for me that was still cooling; that's customer service. So, if you are someone who appreciates the nuance of shopping local, I can not recommend Black Horse Farm enough, but if you're a whiny adult who needs their hand held at all times while shopping, and gets offended with someone quickly answering a question while continuing to do their work (again, small staff but still lots of work to do), perhaps you should go to a corporate big box store.
