I stopped at this farm market recently and was absolutely so excited about this find. I'm glad that I didn't see any of the negative reviews prior to my visit, because I can now honestly say they are all wrong. To the people complaining about the prices; this is a small business that doesn't have corporate sponsorship or the ability to buy big box store quantities resulting in slightly higher prices, but very much improved quality. To the people complaining about the service; when I was there shopping there were only two people working, which as an adult who works in retail customer service understands, just because it's not busy inside, it doesn't mean the worker's are not busy. I highly recommend Black Horse Farm for great plants, delicious baked goods, and friendly local service. I even want to mention that when it comes to customer service, one of the employees overheard me talking about Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and when I mentioned they didn't have any, they went to the back and got one for me that was still cooling; that's customer service. So, if you are someone who appreciates the nuance of shopping local, I can not recommend Black Horse Farm enough, but if you're a whiny adult who needs their hand held at all times while shopping, and gets offended with someone quickly answering a question while continuing to do their work (again, small staff but still lots of work to do), perhaps you should go to a corporate big box store. Notice that all the one star reviews are people that just moved into town? The entitlement... To everyone bitching about the prices, it's called gentrification, if you don't like it, stop moving here, flipping houses into overpriced Airbnb vacation spots. Some of my favorite business owners are gruff. That's how you stay in business. You stand your ground while people give you one star reviews for literally surviving this life. Get over yourself. I asked one question from a worker and was treated like I was bothering them, with hardly anybody in the store! Instead of kindly saying this register is closed...she barked at me "go over there". The pumpkin pie was gross...so much spice it was inedible and the crust was so soggy on the bottom that as I cleaned off the table, I saw no one ate the crust and very little of the filling. The key lime tasted like plastic and the filling was equally plastic, sort of like Play Dough. Ended up throwing out 2/3 of each pie. So over $50 worth of pie thrown away. Their selection of baked goods is amazing! We stopped because we wanted to bring a blueberry pie to a dinner our friends were hosting. In addition to beautiful produce, flowers, garden decor, and food products, we found table after table of baked goods: cookies, brownies, donuts, turnovers, coffee cakes, breads, and then we found them...OMG...their PIE selection was incredible. We definitely wanted blueberry pie, but we had the choice of regular pie crust topping, crumble, or a sugarless blueberry pie. We chose the crumble, and it was delicious!!! The friends we shared the pie with, who live over an hour away, are now planning a road trip to Black Horse Farms! read more

I have shopped at Black Horse Farms frequently, but after today's visit, I won't be back. The owner is caustic, rude and dismissive. At the cash register, after ignoring me for several minutes, she roughly grabbed the herbs I was purchasing by their leaves, not by their containers. Huh ? That was after I saw her angrily snap at the young employees who were assisting me as I shopped. There is no justification for bullying her young employees and it made for a very uncomfortable situation. I wonder what their parents would make of the owners harsh mistreatment of their kids. I know what I'd do. Worst of all, I asked one of the employees if there were any organic tomatoes in the potted garden area that I missed. He asked the owner, who was standing nearby, and she said that everything there is organic. Liar - not true. The few organic vegetables for sale at Black Horse are in distinctive white containers and are clearly marked "Organic". Most of the containers in the large outdoor lot are green, brown or black plastic, none of which have the word "Organic" printed on them. Guess what Cruella - that means that they are NOT organic. She must think her customers are stupid. The real problem is the owner is a lying, abrasive beast as many others who have left negative reviews have also found. Just a 10 minute drive up 9W towards Coxsackie is Hatchet Ace Hardware. Their prices for garden vegetables and flowers are 1/3rd to 1/2 less than Black Horse. The quality of their garden plants is fantastic, with many organic options that are clearly marked. They are very nice people - helpful, polite and well informed. Far superior in every way compared to Gal-zilla and her little shop of horrors. The responses she leaves on many of the negative reviews on Google are exercises in shirking responsibility. They are sorry I was offended ? LOL !!! Indicative that things are not going to change there. Except for her cash flow. As I said, she has lost this customer. There is one enormous reason and a couple of smaller reasons why I am giving Black Horse Farm five stars. The small ones: friendly customer service and lots of free samples. The big one: theirs was the best Apple cider I've ever tasted. I've never been particularly keen on cider. If someone gives me a glass of it, I'll drink it, but I'm not one to seek it out. However, Black Horse Farm changed that last weekend. My husband and I stopped in while we were passing through, because we had a hankering for some cider doughnuts. The ambiance at Black Horse is that of a typical, old school farm stand: a bit shabby and crooked in appearance (not your typical hipster-oriented look of today, with Instagram-ready polished wood, and trendy sliding barn doors on black metal hardware.) It's just a place where they house their wares, including jams, jellies and baked goods, veggies, fruits and cheeses. They also have a small attached greenhouse for flowers and plants. Honestly, I'm cool with that, because what's inside is so worth it. Pumpkins and gourds in crazy colors (a white, wart addled pumpkin, how fun!) TONS of free samples: spreads, cheeses and pear crisps (seriously, I was starting to feel guilty for trying so many products), and a nice variety of baked goods. As mentioned, I came in for doughnuts. And I will say, I enjoyed them very much. While they were cold at the time I arrived (about 3PM, so I couldn't be mad at that), the texture was one of my favorites for a cider doughnut: cake-y and thick, substantial and full of spicy cider flavor without being ultra greasy. I know some people like their doughnuts lighter, but I felt these were satisfying and delicious with their old fashioned texture. Also -- and maybe this is mostly because they were cold, I'll have to sample them again when hot-- there was no yucky roof of the mouth oily coating that I notice with some lighter doughnuts. That was a huge plus. So, the aforementioned cider was an incidental purchase to wash down the doughnuts, but it quickly became the star of the show. Hot, lightly spiced and the tangiest (yet still pleasantly sweet), this was by far the best Apple cider I've ever had in my life. My husband agreed, it was the best he's ever had as well. I sampled another local variety this week to see if my suspicions were correct, that Black Horse in fact sells superior cider, and it was confirmed. Another local (in Altamont) farm had decent cider, but it didn't hold a candle to Black Horse Farm's. Needless to say, I'll be back for more cider at the very least. We recently stopped in at Black Horse Farms and tried a variety of their food options. While I commend them for providing vegan and gluten free products, the quality is just not there. Additionally, it is very expensive. For example, the chicken pot pie had a heavy soggy crust and the filling was loaded with enough pepper to make you sneeze. read more

This place is outstanding. When I lived in the area, I was a regular, unfortunately now I only get to stop in every few months. Great family owned small biz. Good selection of produce, from their farm in the season. Well known for their wonderful tomatoes , pumpkins, gmo free corn, and baked goods, especially pies. Good selection of gourmet items,jams, sauces, cheeses, etc, some country store odds and ends. Unlike big corporate stores, they sell flowerrs that don't die when you plant them and xmas trees that smell great and last all holiday season. It's a must that I visit every time I'm in the area. Just last month I took home a whole box of their tomatoes and canned them. They are THAT good. read more

Black Horse Farms has been a store/farm stand that my mother stopped into as a kid. The pies, soups, along with the fresh berries are always fresh and freshy picked. Make sure to check out their freezers are well. There is terrific cured bacon, with thick sliced my favorite. The Greenhouses have enough flowers, etc, for everyone to find something that would make a terrific gift or enhance your front lawn or patio. Finally, I always usually buy soup, since they don't just fit one person and they are better than any soup you'll find in a restaurant! And if you see the cheese at the checkout counter, they encourage you to try it. Need I say more? One you try that really hard cheddar, you'll be back for more! So yes, I give it 5 of 5, and I can''t find anything to say they do wrong. Chellie works very hard to make sure everything is at it's best. My first time experience with these folks.... I am not one to leave bad reviews as I understand everybody has a bad day but this is worth posting. I am new to the area, and was looking for sweet potato vine. I called Black Horse Farms prior to making a 40-minute trip there and spoke with a seemingly very lovely and well-spoken employee who proceeded to tell me she didn't know, she put a gal on the phone who gave her name and introduced herself as the owner. Unfortunately I do not remember her name. I explained to her I was looking for sweet potato vine and had a 40-minute ride there and wanted to know if they had any in stock. She very rudely said You will have to come in and see what we have that they are an extremely busy store. I tried to explain to her have a 40-minute ride if I could possibly give her my phone number and she could call me back, she proceeded tell me, SIR, we are "very busy here" I don't know what you want me to tell you. #WRONG ANSWER. She is a rude person. (The owner) So I'm taking time out at my "extremely busy day" mam to leave you my review. I will never shop at Black Horse Farms because of your attitude. I did however find a nursery called "Stories Nursery" on Route 23 which is another 15 minutes out of my way but I'm gladly going to patronize them because they knew their stock, and knew what they had. The employee put me on hold because she was "busy" and took the time to get back to me, a potential customer. I guess Black Horse Farms is too big to worry about one person. As it turned out my friend said she would never shop in Black Horse anymore, she was tired of their rude attitudes and they are way overpriced. Although I never got a chance to see their pricing. The moral of the story is they lost the $100 sale that I made in Stories Nursery. Remember to Black Horse Farms it is the patron that keeps you in business! Had an OK selection of produce outside and in the front, lots of market items inside..."natural" soaps and lotions, local souvenirs, lots of jams/jellies/mustards/spreads/etc....I thought it would have a brunch menu type thing? I don't know why I thought that, I just didn't love it. I'll stick to my farmers market. read more

The home baked pies are awesome. No artificial ingredients. We bought the no sugar cherry pie. It weighed almost pounds and the taste was as good as it gets. The apple scones were great too. read more
