The campsites are big and spacious. You are most definitely rustic camping and couldn't have it any other way. We share lots of laughters on/off the river. Does the river have down trees? Sure! But it's Mother Nature and she's a powerful beast. If you know how to have a decent time and make the most of any circumstances, this place is a gem! As for kids - we do not bring our children and go for more of an adult tubing trip! Love the staff, love the privacy and love the great outdoors!

The helmets provided were clean and fit well. The staff was great and really took the time to show us the vehicle, the GPS system, and to provide suggested routes that included some great stops for lunch, etc. Their reccommendations really helped us find our way. The GPS system led us through beautiful trails, and some super fun spots to get through. They were chill about dirt on the vehicles, and I saw them cleaning the units after they were returned. We got our security deposit back fast. At check in and check out, they take pictures of the vehicle and we did our own inspection as well. Very sensible process. The units had plenty of power and were very comfortable. The trails are bumpy, of course, but the suspension took most of that out. They give advice about what not to do on the trails, and listen to them. Several spots were trouble, you dont want to roll or break one of these things. The police on their own 4x4 were out on the trails keeping things safe. One tip, be very careful on the roadside, the cars whiz by and hand signals are heavily required. They brief you on all of this so listen! Overall a great rental for a very reasonable price, in an amazing location. We'll be back!

http://www.canoehiawatha.com/index.php…read more Good, fair prices. Good people - Brian, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. Tons of canoes, tubes, kayaks and other goodies to meet your needs. We took the $32, three hour tour (to Chase Bridge). No complaints. It was fun. They do operate differently than other canoe liveries though in that they have you drive down to the end point, then they shuttle you back to the basecamp (where you start from). Then you can leave straight from the end point rather than wait and pile a bunch of (wet, drunk, annoying) people into a nasty shuttle back to wherever you started. I enjoyed this method much better than the alternative that we have experienced elsewhere. Good idea! FYI, They don't advertise it, but YES, they do take credit cards. Many other places in town, for some reason, don't (so we had brought cash accordingly). Good times. 4 stars.

They shuttle you, which the other places do also, except for the longer trip, so when we want to take that trip we go with one of the other liveries so we don't have to wait on a pickup.

The South Higgins Lake Park Store is a store full of snacks and essentials that you might need for…read morea day on or by the lake, has a food counter as well to order hot foods/meals as well, and for our purposes, it has a boat and other lake equipment (paddle boards, kayaks, canoes) rental offshoot store attached to it as well! I rented a boat from this store, so my review will be focused on this aspect of it! First and foremost, I have camped at a lot of lake state parks, but I have yet to see one that offers boat rentals the way this state park did, the convenience is unbeatable and I knew they were credible as well! I called about a month in advance and everything was already booked, except for their smallest pontoon, which fits 6 people and and dog friendly, which was exactly what we were looking for - my group had 5 people and a large dog! I made the reservation on the phone and they sent me a Google invite to hold my reservation. No money needed to be put down, which I was pleasantly surprised by, which just made things even easier leading up to the trip. They explained all the pricing, what comes with the boat (a full tank of fuel and many other features), how the security deposit would work (it's a $350 deposit if no one in your group has a Michigan Boater Safety Certificate, $250 if someone does), and all the details on when to show up on the day of our rental! They only do full day rentals in advance. If you wanted a boat for half a day, it'd be first come first serve on the day of, but given when we called all the pontoons were already reserved except for 1, I'd say that the first come first serve nature of boat renting is not going to work on any weekend in the summertime, holiday weekend or not! But all the paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks are also first come first serve no matter what, and those were all still in stock when we went in to pick up our boat first thing in the morning. The day of our rental, we showed up at 9 am I believe (we have the boat from 9 am - 6 pm) and they took our payment at the office and showed us the general layout of the entire lake and things to watch out for in certain areas of the lake on the boat, which was much appreciated! Then we went to the boat, where they showed us how to work it all and where all the items we might need were as we got settled. Then they tendered us out to the deeper part of the water where we could start the engine and start driving and the rest of the day was ours! It was a magical day on the boat and exploring the whole breadth of Higgins Lake, which honestly was such an amazing lake to be on! Coming back in was just as easy! One of our group jumped out to tender our boat in when the water got too shallow for the engine to continue and because this was around the time when everyone was bringing their rental boats back in, there were park store employees at the dock helping to secure the boats and inspect our boats, which then allowed us to get our safety deposit refund! The process was super simple, quick, and straightforward and I would rent a boat from South Higgins Lake Park Store again in a heartbeat! Next time I'm planning to come to this lake, they will definitely be getting another phone call from me! Thanks for such a positive experience!!

It's mostly a place for rookie kayakers, so it's a mix of extreme annoyance and hilarity. Wallace Park has only ONE kayak launch in somewhat fast moving water. They post signs telling you not to "drop" your kayak off the wall into the water. But, if you don't do that, you'd wait forever to use the launch. Parking can be problematic too, as your only options are parking on side streets. It's a nice little park that serves a good purpose, and it's the only easily accessible access point along this stretch of river.
