Reviewing specifically the Archery Department. That is where I have done all my shopping. Up until now. I am only posting here because contacting Jay's directly about my experience has yielded no response from them. 1. In 2023 I brought an old crossbow in and asked for help finding a large enough case. Grumpy guy sat on his chair and pointed to where cases were. I ended up leaving w/o buying one. I bought one on line. I go into Jays and expect to pay more and expect to have great help from folks there. 2. On 9/5 I picked up my Matthews bow that I had tuned up. New string, kisser, peep. I wanted to buy arrows. I asked the same grumpy man which arrows I should look at. I told him I was given the bow and arrows and really knew nothing about my bow. Other than I killed deer with it. His response was "personal preference". He did not get off his chair and show me which arrows might fit my bow. So I picked up some arrows and another friendly, older gent told me that was the wrong section. Nicer gent showed me section of arrows that went with my bow. Then I asked grumpy man which field tips I should buy. "Personal Preference" was his answer. Other nice gent walked me to field tips and offered advice. When bow was all done and I was ready to leave the nicer gent told me he did not think my draw length was right. The grumpy man was the one who took my bow two weeks earlier. He did not measure my draw length. So I paid and left with a bow that supposedly is wrong draw length. It is my bow and my fault. If it is wrong it has been wrong for 20 years. But could grumpy man have measured my draw length and adjusted it? I do not know. I told him up front I knew nothing about my bow other than to kill deer with it. He did not seem willing to offer any advice whatsoever. So I will bring my bows to another archery shop going forward. read more

I bought my husband the coolest gun for Christmas. I used my card to order it from GRABAGUN.com and had it shipped to JAY'S in GAYLORD. Shipping was quick. I took him with me to JAY'S to pick it up to be told we could NOT have it. We both have CPL's so I didn't think it would be a problem. We were told because it was on my card and the invoice was in my name they could not register it in hubby's name and because I admitted that it was a gift for him they would not let me complete the registration either. But they would contact GRABAGUN and get the invoice in his name and we could pick it up in a couple of days. Two days later I contacted GRABAGUN who was surprised we were having a problem. They stated they had not been contacted by JAY'S. I contacted JAY's and asked if I could pick up my gun. That hubby had purchased his own and it was being shipped. The employee said he didn't think there would be a problem but he would check with the higher ups. After a short wait a woman came on the phone and stated she remember me, calling my husband by name. She claimed she too had spoken with GRABAGUN and knew they would not change the documents. I asked if I could pick it up. She stated "NO, after you saying it was a gift for your husband I can not allow you to have it. It's a liabilty thing. We will be returning it to the company." I called GRABAGUN back and told the to send the return label to JAY'S and when the gun arrived to send it to a different dealer. I called that dealer explained everything to him and he was also disgusted with JAY's attempt to ruin Christmas. DO NOT SHOP AT JAY'S! read more

I want to preface this review that I am not reviewing the store and company as a whole, I am making a review of their management. I went in today 6-16-24 and purchased some goods. My family was also in the store and found more items they wanted to purchase. I took the already purchased items up to the register in the cart. The cashier asked to verify everything in the cart was already paid for. I already had another employee check to see if it was paid for so I asked if it was necessary to do so again. The front line manager, Amy, proceeded to interrupt the interaction and tell me to calm down and to shush. First off, no manager should ever be telling customers to shush, regardless if the customer is being rude or not. In this case I was asking a question not being rude. Second, by doing so she escalated the situation and made me upset. I ended up telling her I would be taking my business elsewhere and had to complain to the stores manager. The store manager was very polite and apologized and the front line manager also ended up apologizing, however it was a very superficial apology and did not really correct wrongdoing. In summation, Jays owners and upper management should have better training for their managers to prevent incidents like this. No manager should ever speak disrespectfully or rudely to patrons. Their jobs are to resolve situations not make them worse. read more

I purchased a stock for a Ruger 10/22 for my daughter (just getting started) that they had listed on Gunbroker.com. Immediately paid for it, only to get an email the next day that they CANCELED MY ORDER. Why? Because the "Owner made a decision" not to ship to California. I asked Mary Cooley for the owners' email so I could address this. She told me to email her and she would, "Pass it on." This is not a firearm; this is not a regulated product; this does not require any special licenses or permits. It is an accessory that was going to be used by a 9-year old kid starting in Steel Challenge. So, while we live behind enemy lines in California and try to exercise our 2nd amendment rights, this business has decided to make their own political statement by not selling to us. All because my shipping address is in California. Nothing else; no discussion whatsoever. I'm happy to spend a little more money elsewhere. You're not doing us any favors by not shipping to people in California. read more

EDIT: WHAT A CHANGE!!! Worst customer service EVER! On March 3rd of this year, I purchased a pistol (S&W M&P 22) from Jay's Sporting Goods at their Gaylord location. On the 14th. I took it to the gun range to finally test it out. The pistol failed to fire right out of the box. (They sold me a bad pistol) I took it to a gunsmith close to the range to see if it was something simple. They told me to send it back since it was new. In the 16th., I took it back to Jays to have it sent in. Today, April 5th. I still had no word on my pistol, so I called Jays. The guy told me that he had no information and I needed to call Smith & Wesson. I asked for their number and he said I had to look it up online. I then looked it up and called them. The agent I spoke with said Jays had to call because they were the ones who sent it in, but she could telly me that it was repaired and sent back. She told me that it had already been delivered and signed for. I then called Jays back and they looked for it and found it. He then said I had to wait 24 hours to pick it up, even though the pistol was already registered to me. He said it was a law. I then explained that I purchased another weapon online through a different dealer and was able to pick it up the minute they received it, so unless they have different laws for their gun store only, I should be able to come and retrieve my own property. He simply said I still have to wait until tomorrow. Jays just lost my future business. UPDATE: Went in today to pick up my pistol and ended up having a conversation with Mark the store manager. He was very apologetic and assured me that he was going to look into the situation further and take care of the lack of customer service. He was very friendly and courteous. When everything was finished, he gave me a gift card to help compensate me for travel and fuel since it's a bit more than 80 miles round trip. If he is serious and does educate the proper people on the value of good customer service, then I'll be shopping with them again in the future. I'm updating my review to 3 stars for now, until I see the results next time I'm in the store. EDIT: We went back to the store today after yesterday's meeting with Mark the store manager. Neither my wife nor I could believe the difference in just one day. The manager had to have talked to the employees because it was more than just one or two people who had shown improvement, it was ALL of them. We went back to the gun counter and there were 6 or 8 sales people helping customers. We were waited on almost immediately and the staff was friendly, courteous, and actually talked and joked around with us. Before it felt like we were just a minor annoyance to be avoided. We actually bought a pistol because of the major improvement. Tim and Bruce were both very helpful. It felt like it used to feel in the Clare store when Jay Poet was alive. We both commented on the way home that there were a lot of people getting helped today. I'm not sure what Mark said to the staff, but I've never seen such a turn-around ever. 11 minutes ago Had one of the worst customer service experiences of my life here. 3 guys behind the counter in the fishing section all just staring at their phones as I shopped. I probably looked at every rod they had in the store and nobody asked if I needed help. God forbid they have to put their phones down. Then I was looking for some floating braided line and couldn't find it. I thought maybe they were sold out so I picked some power line hi viz braid and asked the guy behind the counter if that would float. I got an immediate attitude from the guy. How dare I interupt his candy crush game to ask a question. His response was short and unhelpful but he did ask if I was steelhead fishing to which I replied yes. After mulling it over I asked him to spool the power line on as I continued to shop. I then went to try on wader boots. As I'm doing so I turn around and see a kiosk full of steelhead gear including some hydrofloat hi viz braid. This line was not in the same isle as most of their fishing line. When I asked another staff member to see if I could have the correct line spoiled instead of the wrong line I was already having spooled, I was told I'd have to pay for both sets of line. Nevermind the fact the guy knew the species I was targeting, knew what I was looking for, knew they had the right line in the store but spooled what I considered the next best thing anyway. Not once did he speak up and try to point me In the right direction. I have spent close to 1000$ here this past month and I'm local so I shop here weekly, but after today I will never shop here again. As I was walking out of the store complaining, another guy stopped me in the parking lot and said when he asked for help, 2 employees acted like they didn't hear him. Go in the store, walk around and you'll see all their employees on their phones not giving a damn about the people shopping. It's a joke and it saddens me as a long time jays customer to see the quality of the shopping experience decline. It's no wonder why online shopping is putting these places out of buisness. Came in with my brother to get a couple shotguns and gear for the dog, I was turned around saying I had to either carry my dog or put her in a cart. okay sure no problem, but she was scared of the cart for whatever reason and needless to say I wasn't going to carry my dog around the entire store and proceed to spend a bunch of money when I can't even walk my dog in a sportsman's store! Rude staff, overpriced merchandise. I've purchased three firearms from Jay's Gaylord and the service is sporadic. of all the counter help that have, the knowledge is sparse and one young man, while holding a single action Revolver was busy spinning the cylinder like a roulette wheel! the quality of the inventory was poor and the prices are MSRP. there was only one clerk who had the knowledge to answer my questions satisfactorily and the personality to effectively sell the merchandise but it wasn't enough to overcome the defects of the revolvers I'd come to purchase. DO NOT purchase from these people unless you know exactly what you're looking for and willing to spend. this is one one place where "Buyer Beware" applies 200%. On a positive note, the ladies at the checkout were very friendly and greeted everyone they could who entered and departed the store. the other departments could learn from them. read more

So I went straight to shoe section and recieve excellent service. Now it's been a while since i bought pair boots. So the little standing measure device to get perfect fit was pretty awesome and 100 percent accurate. After doing so they were able to get me booted. Found the perfect pair was on my way. First time to the new location and, while I liked that the other building was right off the highway, this was a nice store. Everything was clean and orderly, the store was laid out well, and the selection is huge. Prices still seem to be a little higher than you can find elsewhere, but they aren't that high and being able to find everything in one place is always nice. Staff weren't overly eager to help, which was fine since we didn't have questions, but something to keep in mind if you're not sure what you're looking for. Good experience overall and I'm sure we'll be back here next time we're traveling through Michigan. read more

My husband has been trying to decide on a really good rain suit for hunting . We have been to other stores and unfortunately the employees were not very knowledgeable about the products . We went to Jays in Gaylord and Diane in the clothing department was amazing, her knowledge on every rain suit blew us away she thought of things we hadn't. It is so rare and sad nowadays that nobody cares about where they work yet at Jays you will find that the employees there care very much and are so kind. We will no longer shop anywhere else when looking for things Jay sells . Michelle also in archery a couple years ago was wonderful in her knowledge as well having great personality . I recently had a chance to order an item from them via the www - being remote I did not get a chance to visit the store. The item I ordered these days is hard to find. Jay's had one. I made a call to them because details of the order needed to be worked out. I spoke with Jeania initially. She was most outstanding in getting me to the correct people. From there I worked with Jeremy and Jason. Both were quite friendly and helpful. They held the item I sought until the details could be squared away. All the folks I worked with were communicative and professional. The item arrived much sooner than anticipated and was exactly as advertised - and at a good price. My remote experience with Jay's Sporting goods was excellent. From this point forward when seeking such items this is where I will start. read more

called store about 6:45 P.M. on 11/13/20 to check if a item was in stock, told it was and they had plenty. They would not hold it for me until morning. At store 45 minutes before it open. Stood in line, I was the second in line. when store opened. Went to counter and was told there was none in stock and they employeee said "next". Asked for the manager at front desk and a female said she was the manage. All she could say was well it is that time of year. There is no known date for item to be restocked. I also overheard other customers with the same complaint. It was not a good shopping experience and it appears emplyeees told customers to come in for items that were notg in stock. Back in July 2020 I went to Jay's and asked if they would order a Taurus G3c pistol for me and was told no, and even if they could, he didn't know when they would get it. Very poor customer service skills, very abrupt, and lacking in quality people skills. Went back a few months later, after going to Sportsman's Warehouse in Lansing and purchasing the g3c for under $250, because I heard that they had 9mm ammo in stock. The person scoffed at me and said " Yeah like two weeks ago we had some!" He was not interested in talking to me any further, The same as the person who I asked if he could order a gun. I live in Gaylord where Jays is located and I will drive to Lansing from now on to purchase all my guns, ammo, and apparel. As a matter of fact, I just went there and picked up a nice little Kel Tec p17 for under $170. Go to Sportsman's Warehouse in Lansing. They are very busy and it takes time to get your number called to get serviced, but service you will get! read more
