Lisa, Heinrich's admin, originally scheduled my husband's knee replacement surgery for August 25, 2025, in their office. However, the anesthesiologist determined that the procedure needed to be done at St. David's Medical Center. Lisa called to explain the change in location and told us that the surgery was being moved from August 25 to the 29. At that point, everything seemed fine, and we made all necessary arrangements for that weekend--at considerable personal expense. When my husband later contacted the hospital for information and instructions, he was shocked to learn that no surgery was scheduled for August 29. After calling Dr. Heinrich's office, he was told that his surgery date was actually October 29, not August 29. Unfortunately, in her haste, Lisa had not clarified that the change was to October, which naturally caused confusion. This misunderstanding created significant stress for both of us--particularly for me, as I am undergoing treatment for bone marrow cancer--as well as unnecessary monetary costs from the arrangements I had already made. Thankfully, we were able to reschedule his surgery for September 3, and the procedure was successful. This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication, especially regarding critical details such as dates and times. read more

I was turned on to Dr Heinrich by a work friend who used him for a past surgery. She mentioned that he used a certain technique (from other reviews here, i gather it's called an 'anterior' approach), and it is somehow superior to the traditional technique. Lemme just say: Whatever he did, I am so lucky. Incredibly and surprisingly low pain post surgery. I'm the bionic woman. Staff treated me like a VIP and made my fmla paperwork easy. Bless this whole practice- I'm a new woman. Oh, and while a scar was unavoidable, it's about as good as it can be - and with cocoa butter, the scar is getting lighter with time. read more

Negligence Beyond Belief Dr Heinrich performed a total hip replacement on my left hip in March 2021 at the MUVE surgery center and my operated leg ended up 1.25 inches longer than my other leg. It actually measured 1.5" from the bottom of my right heal to the floor (see pictures of my uneven knees below). That's inches, not mm. I'm five feet tall. 113 lbs. As soon as I woke up from surgery and tried to walk I knew something was terribly wrong. A nurse saw me crying and told Dr Heinrich, who came to my room later. His demeanor went from a polite "caring" surgeon before surgery to a horses rear in no time flat. He scoffed, rolled his eyes at me and laughed in my face when I tearfully thanked him for coming to talk to me, saying "Oh I'm not here just for you" with an "as if" tone. From that point forward he and his office staff (except for Frank, he was the only truly nice person there) treated me like I was a hysterical patient. It's been such a traumatic experience it took a year for me to be able to write this review. The surgery was supposed to give me a new life, I'm only 59, but this whole experience gave me serious doubts about my life going forward. The one nurse from MUVE who spoke to me like a human as opposed to reciting a memorized script, told me I would get an X-ray & measurement at my two-week postop appt. Didn't happen. Heinrich's nurse Kim sat in the room with her arms crossed staring at me, barely speaking. My husband and I had to coax any interaction from her at all, and this was the first major surgery I'd ever had. She told me that I would not be getting the X-ray or the measurement, because I would "just obsess over the number", as if it were me who was the problem. At that point I was still trying to trust them which was a HUGE mistake. I now know that this is how they protect the surgeon, the patient be damned. By not taking pictures, measurements, or asking any questions, they don't have to put any notes into the patient's file. I was in bed for most of the four months between Heinrich's botched surgery and my revision surgery because my back, neck and hip were in so much pain and even standing was a problem! I had to hold onto the sink to even brush my teeth for god's sake! The pain after surgery was horrific, absolutely nothing like the "normal recovery" I was repeatedly being told I was having. Intense full-body spasms, uncontrolled trembling and pain comparable to childbirth that overwhelmed and knocked me to my knees more than once, not to mention I used the walker for six weeks & ended up with bad tennis elbow from putting all my weight on it for that long! I consulted with two other surgeons during that time, one said that "something had to have happened" (ya think??) and the other said it was the most monstrous leg difference he'd seen on a patient my size. I was now handicapped (with no recourse!) and the only thing that could be done was to change out the ball. There were a couple of days when I thought I wouldn't even be able to have that done, because Heinrich had apparently "accidentally" falsified my postop report. My new surgeon had to contact the manufacturer to find out what size had actually been implanted into my hip, and he called me twice himself to let me know the status of things. A full revision would have required very risky controlled breakage of the bone and several months of difficult recovery. So much for an easy peasy hip replacement. This is what I think happened: he put the huge implant into my femur and then couldn't get it out. I honestly don't know why or how this big of an implant was even considered for me or how this huge of a mistake could have possibly been made. I should also note that Heinrich was late to surgery that day. I know because my nurse told me they were still waiting on him after I'd been prepped. Three different lawyers have told me I could've sued in any state other than Texas. Maybe Heinrich is just so pompous he thinks he can do these surgeries with one eye closed & an arm tied behind his back. All I know is the way I was treated was completely shameful and unconscionable. I had already scheduled my revision surgery by the time my six-week postop appt with Heinrich came around, but I went to his appt anyway just to see what he'd do. Someone in Heinrich's office finally looked at my hip! It was the X-ray tech!! I couldn't stand straight with my feet flat on the floor and she alerted the doctor. This is negligence beyond belief. When Dr Heinrich finally saw my X-rays and talked to me, he barely looked me in the eye. He quickly said he could do a second surgery "if I wanted" and then told me to wait another 6 weeks(!) for it to "settle" before leaving the room as quickly as possible. The knee was a bit more challenging to rehab; took 5 weeks before I felt ready for business air travel.. My hip recovery was a bit faster; as I resumed business travel in 4 week.. was walking with a walker after both surgeries the same day.. I was Climbing and descending stairs to reach our bedroom from day 1. I recommend selecting the Lakeway Surgical facility if given the choice.. Great people and facility. read more

My mother needed a hip replacement at 94. I thought it would not even have been an option but both her regular orthopedic dr and Dr Heinrich saw no issues (otherwise pretty healthy). I am very happy with the whole experience. Christin did a wonderful job of preparing me and explaining what to expect. Everyone at the surgery center was so helpful and friendly and put me at ease. My knees and hip have been bothering me for a while due to numerous years of playing and officiating sports. I went to Dr. Heinrich because he successfully replaced both my wife's hips and I was impressed with both his success with her and the way he communicated with us. Everyone in their Austin office impressed me, from the receptionists, Frank, the XRay tech, Kim and Dr. Heinrich. All very professional and accommodating. After my XRays were studied, it was determined no joint replacements were warranted. I got a cortisone shot in my knee and will do some PT. The knee swelling has already diminished and I had a full night's sleep, without waking in pain, for a long time. I'm confident I can get back to the levels of activity I'm used to. Friends that we were with were simply astounded that I was able to walk over 5 miles a day and then swim, play, dance, whatever the evening plans were without any pain!! I had a knee replacement done 10 years ago by Dr Heinrich. He was recommended by a number of people including at least two PTs. The results were nothing less than excellent. The Dr. is personable, although rather busy, so no you don't get a lot of time with him. But there's a reason he's so busy. Because he's a great surgeon and he's so in demand! I had a second hip replacement with Dr. Heinrich. First went very well and recovered easily. Second not at all the same. Left me with a significant leg length difference and now I'm about to try to chiropractor he recommends and it's now 7 months post surgery. Hate the comments that I am limping, have followed the recommendations post surgery. I understand there is a potential for this, but the first one had a difference that was manageable, and this one is 1/2 at least off. I'm going to get a second opinion from another highly recommended surgeon to see what I can do on a permanent fix basis. read more

This will be a little long, but bear with me. In the past, I worked with orthopedists. When I asked, they told me they only use Dr. Matt Heinrich for themselves, and their family members. I was delighted to hear this because I had met Dr. Heinrich previously, when he took over the care of a friend/co-worker from another doctor, and saved her life (no exaggeration, she was dying). I knew he was a good man, and unusual in that he also has a great personality, which is trained out of most doctors. My time with Dr. Heinrich came when I could no longer walk farther than 150 yards. I finally gave in and had my knees replaced, one at a time, eight weeks apart. They tell you everything you need to do, both in home preparation, and physical preparation, for the surgery. I did not experience the pain level I was told to expect, with either knee. I was off of Tramadol at the end of six days. I did not take the Oxycodone at all. After the eighth week, I only need Tylenol occasionally, depending on exertion. Ice is my friend-I keep icing, as needed. * The Force exercise program is quite ingenious. It can be done by anyone, including me (overweight and sedentary for many years due to those knees and working in a cubicle). I got back full range of motion in both knees. I can walk with a normal gait, without pain. Recovery is really dependent on patient compliance, I accept this part as "my job." * I highly recommend Dr. Heinrich and his great staff. I also recommend using the robotic, especially if you are not a "perfect" candidate (which I was not), because it greatly increases the accuracy of the prosthesis placement. I believe, and others who have had both kinds of knee surgery, have also said they felt recovery post-robotic assisted TKR, was easier. It has been a life-changing experience for me. I have my life back, and Dr. Heinrich made that happen. Thank you so very much. read more

After having a HORRIBLE office visit with another Austin orthopedic surgeon, I happened on Dr Heinrich. From the initial phone call to the surgical hip replacement EVERYTHING was perfect. Dr Heinrich is personable, compassionate, caring, honest and a superb surgeon. My husband had his surgery in the late afternoon and came home the next day. Run far away! He abused my trust, lied to me about my options, did a terrible job on the surgery, decided to change my leg length based on gut feelings instead of measuring, destroyed my sport and my active lifestyle, prescribed drugs that had interactions with my current meds and refused to change them, and left me in far more pain than the arthritis ever inflicted. The surgery had to be redone (by a surgeon who could measure) to fix his mistakes four months later and those mistakes left lasting damage. I don't know when I'll get my life back. read more

Had Double Hip replacement May of 2015, I was at a point where i couldn't walk. My quality of life very poor to say the least, had several consultations with Dr. Heinrich and his staff to have both done at the same time. Dr Heinrich is a phenominal surgeon with a great staff and a caring bedside manner. I have had 3 surgeries, left hip in Aug 2014, right hip 2 months later. Both hips were anterior replacements and I was walking by the evening of the surgery. I just had a total right knee replacement 1 1/2 months ago and it is amazing how easily I have been recovering. I am up and taking care of my home and family, being respectful to my knee as I realize it takes longer to heal than a hip. Dr Heinrich has given me my mobility back! I had a total right hip replacement in November 2018. Dr Heinrich and his team at the MUVE were amazing! I was up and walking pain free within hours after the surgery. Now fast forward to June 2019 and I needed a total right knee replacement. (I was having rt knee issues off and on for for years) Dr. Heinrich did my right knee replacement on June 17th, 2019 and I am two 1/2 weeks in and yes, it is sore and my knee is stiff, but I am back at work 5-6- hours a day and doing my physical therapy that is prescribed. The team at the MUVE is amazing! I want to thank Dr. Heinrich, Dr. Playfair, Marietta, Terry, Heather, Peggy, Brad, Han, Amanda, Gracie, Cliff, Sharon, Hallie, Sophia and Nancy. This team took amazing care of me at the MUVE and prepared me as well as my caregiver for what we needed to do and what to expect when I got home. This is a special team of people who are always there for you, whether you have a serious question or something is on your mind. They make you feel comfortable through the entire process. This 3-star review is for my husband's post-surgery experience at the Orthopaedic Specialists of Austin. His surgery was performed by Dr. E. Matthew Heinrich about 2 months ago. The surgery was fantastic, and the knee is feeling 100%. As another person noted, he allows other people to participate/be present in surgery. In our case, he had a PA or NP with him, which of course wasn't covered by our insurance and costed us an extra $300 for her to be there. While he was very friendly the 2 times we met (on initial visit and on the day of surgery), we have not seen him since the surgery. For the 2 week follow up, we waited 45 min-1 hour past our appointment to see the nurse practitioner. For the 6 week follow up, my husband left his appointment after 45 min without seeing anyone, but again, the appointment was with the NP and not Dr. Heinrich. We made it a point to make our appointment at a time that was slower in the day and still had horrific wait times. My husband actually called before meeting with Dr. Heinrich the first time to question the fact that people's main complaint was the office wait times, to which the response was they were taking steps to remedy the issue. If the office could get it together and see people in a timely manner, Dr. Heinrich would easily get 5-stars. We feel our time was not valued and, as is the trend, offices are overbooking patients. read more

I had a total left hip replacement with Dr Heinrich. I think the surgery over all went extremely well. I compete in various endurance and fitness competitions and do a strenuous bootcamp 4-5 days a week. I was able to return to bootcamp 6 weeks after surgery. I'm doing box jumps, weighted squat jumps, stair and hill repeats, etc... Since the surgery is what I most care about I'm giving 4 stars. If I consider post op support and engagement I'd give two stars. I saw Dr Heinrich just once after my surgery stay. Two of three visits were with his assistant. My last scheduled appointment was supposed to be with the doctor but when I got there they said it would be with his assistant again. I left since I would be paying out of pocket at that point and I had a number of questions I wanted to have the doctor answer directly. Those questions remain unasked and unanswered. I was tempted to make this a three star rating but what the heck? I'm doing weighted squat jumps!! It's a bummer that he doesn't feel the need to engage more with his clients. He always gets dinged on the same stuff. Ultimately you have to know, care, and communicate. I know he knows, I think he might care, I wish he communicated. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Heinrich and his staff. In 2008, he totally replaced my left & partially replaced my right knee. Just a few weeks ago, I went in for a revision of the right knee to a total replacement. As well, he performed a meniscus repair of my right knee. He is caring and answers all of my questions. He is empathic when I'm in pain. He is so knowledgeable about the latest procedures & implants. You know at the hospital, the nurses are the ones who know, & they all told me he is the one patients come to from all over the country to repair the knee jobs other doctors have messed up. His staff is efficient and gets things done. I highly recommend him for any kind of knee operation. And in a few years, if I need a hip replacement, I will be seeing him for that. read more

If I could only give negative stars for this doctor I would. I see the same results that look -- oh so great which is why we chose him. I am thinking the negative ones don't get posted or are pushed so far to the bottom you can't see them so I won't be surprised if ours doesn't show up. This is a long sad story about our experience with this doctor but here is the short version. He did my husband's first knee replacement in August of 2015. Later we found out after months and three surgeries by Heinrich that it was indeed infected as we suspected all along. I asked him to aspirate and test the fluid for infection after the first surgery when the symptoms appeared. He declined. Said he needed another surgery to "fix" a tear. They finally tested it during the 3rd surgery. He refused to test for the leaking incision in the office since right after the first surgery when we voiced our concerns, but instead kept insisting on "fixing" the reason for the leak with more surgeries. Found another surgeon in San Antonio to do the replacement and save the leg by taking out the infected parts that in their opinion should have been tested for and removed much earlier . They said the infection had tunneled out causing the leaking and failure for the incision to close and also gone up into the bone because it was in there untreated for so long. After 5 total surgeries my husband is disabled for life. Infections happen unfortunately all too commonplace nowadays, but If the signs of infection that were there from the beginning were addressed immediately, I did think it odd also at the time that he collects money from you ahead of every time he does a surgery for an "unknown" additional medical person that is not covered by our insurance to assist him like the other poster said. We found this very curious. He kept calling my husband a "conundrum" said he'd never seen such mysterious symptoms before. We asked to speak to his partner for a second opinion who said he didn't know what Heinrich was talking about because they, in fact, see these types of symptoms and infections all the time. He seemed aggravated to answer our questions. We got another third opinion from another orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Graham in Austin who referred us back to "Matt" to fix the problem. This surgeon has been sued for the same thing prior to this. We were at a loss as to what to do. My husband is not the same person since. read more
