What is nice about Heinrich's is you can purchase individual items instead buying a whole package of iteMs from Michaels or Joann fabric. They accept bulk orders and ship by mail with extra cost. The staff are friendly and helpful. They wear mask and gloves. Practice social distancing. Price comparable to other retail stores. They have offered decorating classes. Check online if available despite the COVID. Most likely to come back for the Nordic pans and mini cookie cutters. Aisles are organized by category. read more

I have been coming here for years for cake and candy making supplies. They can be a bit pricey for some things but that's to be expected. If I need a specialty item I know where to look. They are an older small business so the decor isn't going win any decorating awards but you know what they say?! If it isn't broken don't fix it. I never had a problem with Customer service here. They are knowledgeable and helpful. There is a help counter in the back by the piping tips. Also the front cashier is willing to help if possible. read more

Not returning because I went to the store 6/22/23 to buy cake decorations and out of the 3 people there, not one person said hello or offered help. I finally asked the lady with gray hair and white glasses. She just said we don't carry it, or would need to print it and my other item was over there by the wedding stuff. Okay.... that doesn't help me after working around curiously looking for supplies. I left and will not return and will order from Amazon. I go off vibes and the vibes were they didn't want my cash! I love this supply store! Really wish they'd open a location closer to the west side of the city. It's really the Home Depot of bakery supply stores. They have a vast selection of items catering to bakers of all skill levels. They have excellent prices. They also offer classes and tips for enhancing your skills. Heinrich's is a baker's/decorator's dream! They carry anything and everything needed to make your sweet treats beautiful and unique - including necessities like doilies, (cake) boxes, and chocolate boxes. Speaking of chocolate, this is pretty much why we come here. They have a large selection of (colored) chocolates to chose from, which you can melt and mold, fill, or use to dip or drizzle things with. I make a boatload of dipped pretzels for Christmas so I usually get your basic white, dark, and milk (colorings freak me out, but they are cute). This year I also got the peanut butter flavor and it was so good.. very peanutty. They have flavored sugars, icing, artificial colors (gels, liquids, the whole shebang), artificial and natural flavors, paint brushes and cookie cutters and edible glitter and pearls.. pretty much everything but the cake! One of my favorite things to look at is their HUGE selection of sugar shapes to choose from. Santa's, snowmen, wreaths, candy canes, easter bunnies, easter eggs, every flower you can think of, letters and numbers, hearts -you get the point. If you are creative you can really make some beautiful things with the products they sell, here! It's a little unfortunate that the store itself is quite old and outdated looking.. very brown and, well.. dated. Also, the ladies that work here aren't the most attentive or cheerful, but if you talk to them long enough they'll warm up. read more

This place has more cake baking and decorating items than you can imagine! The prices are reasonable too.

If you are into baking or decorating baked goods then you probably know that there are not many local options for supplies unless you go to places like JoAnns or Michaels. This is a nice alternative with far more selection and you are supporting a small local business. Don't be intimidated by its exterior or actually the interior also. I'll admit it's kind of dark, drab and out dated. But if you can look past that you'll find a large array of supplies from melting chocolates, pre made flowers, cake boxes and carriers, frosting tips, sprinkles, flavorings, cake pans, you name it! I haven't found that I've needed something that they didn't have. And their prices are reasonable and certainly better than the big box retailers. My only complaint is that I highly dislike the cupcake wrappers they sell, I'm not sure what material they are made out of but they are extremely waxy and cause my cupcakes to shrink in size. I do not purchase those there any longer. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Heinrichs, I usually come here because it's the closest decorating store to me. But today will be the last time I step foot into this establishment. Two of your employees ( one an older lady with short hair and a younger lady with glasses and part of her hair shaved in the back) were at the counter where you get the edible images from talking about their "white privilege." The older lady stated that it was her "white privilege to avoid the black lives matter protests so she can get home to her children. " They both laughed and joked about the protests, saying they weren't able to cross certain streets and joked that they'll just carry a sign to get across. It just bothered me that they would think this is funny, that this is something to joke about. read more

I used to bake cakes professionally... *(Including a cake for the blue angels and various other gatherings)... so I wanted the best for what I made and this is where I found it. Look no further. Weather you are making chocolate candies and are looking for the actual chocolate or the molds for them they will be the ones that will have it. This isn't your Michael's arts and crafts... This is a professional cale decorating supply store. They have... Dragees, floral wire, royal icing, almond paste, sprinkles, luster dust, disco dust, gum paste, a huge supply of edible decorations, gold leaf, cake filling, candy making supplies, every size cake box/chocolate candy box you can imagine... Dont know how to make a cake... no worries. Take a class here and they will show you how. By the way. If you walk past the historic bunny ride there is a fridge up front that stocks the clarified butter and the whipped non dairy frosting that I was famous for! Check this place out! Oh and yes it's a older building but don't let that take away how special and lucky we are to have a place like this. read more

Recently started making cakes along with working at an upscale chocolate shop, and have been making the hike all the way out to Sarah's. I didn't realize there was a place closer to my house. Finally my coworker clued me in to Heinrich's, but I was a bit weary of coming here due to the area. Heinrich's is a bit of an old school cake supply store.. you will find lots of cheap and random crap that I can't imagine anyone really uses. A lot of it looks like it has been on their shelves since the 70's and are way out of style. But most importantly, they have most of the basic stuff you would need... fondant, cake pans, piping bags, cake boards and boxes, decorating tools, etc. They have TONS of chocolate/candy molds, and even have a "special" room where they keep "exotic" molds (hint: if this were a video store, this room would be the equivalent to the X-rated room) I recently had a friend's bachelorette party and was able to find a "special" mold to make some chocolate sucker favors for everyone attending. Got quite a few laughs.. If you love Luster Dust as much as I do you'll be giddy to see that they have 3 containers chock full of colors.. at least 50 shades! They're $4.50 each for the tiny, tiny containers, whereas you can usually get them for $3 each online. But the advantage to getting them here is you don't have to pay a shipping cost and you can actually see the exact shade in person before buying. It feels a bit like the thrift store of cake suppliers, but just like thrift stores if you keep looking, you will come across some gems. I just wish they would catch up to the current trends and carry nicer, higher quality and more stylish stuff. But your 70 yr old grandma who makes gaudy, frilly butter cream cakes would love this place. Staff is friendly and if you have some basic questions they can usually answer them. And if you are buying for a business they usually provide a bit of a discount. I don't know if you need to show them any documentation or anything.. they already had my employer's info in their system when I started shopping there. Recently I purchased $210 in supplies and the total ended up being $170. Every little bit helps :) And I think they offer a few classes, although I don't know if it's occasionally or on a regular basis. Despite their staff being reasonably knowledgeable I don't know how good the classes are. read more

You can't beat their price on Americolor gels, but their staff is rude, and their edible image services are horrible. I sent $52 on 12 sheets of images, and I can't use the equivalent of 2 sheets worth of images because they printed smudges on them, and then tried to blame my image, which is clean and smudge-free. They refunded me $8 for the unusable images, but were unable to print me any better ones. So, off to Miles to get them done right. The store itself is very dingy and outdated, as is their selection of decorations. I've also almost bought sprinkles there with a 'best by' date of over 2 years ago. The gentleman at the counter was a complete jerk when I brought it up, and said they were fine. I might just have to go back to shopping at Miles. Pros: Prices on most items are well under similarly stocked bakery supply shops; variety of most essential bakery items are good Cons: Outdated interior, spotty service (relatively good when you go hunt them down, but not overly minded to come ask you for help -- feels like they assume you know what you're doing...we've gotten used to that, and actually prefer it that way now. It's not like they're all hiding out in a back room, just go up and ask one of them for help if you need it!), some outdated sugar-related stuff My wife has only used their edible picture service once -- it worked out fine, but I'm sure there are better options elsewhere. It worked for the graduation cake she made. You can buy some of their products in mass bulk. Just ask -- if they can sell it to you in the bulk form, they will. For example, just bought 1000 sheets of 8" parchment circles. About 60% less than buying them in small quantities. read more

I will start with the positives: I stupidly agreed to make my friends wedding cake. After 4 test cakes, it was finally time for me to make her actual cake. I went to Heinrich's to get a bigger pan for the base of the cake. I bought a 12 inch pan and Jennifer who worked there could probably sense my total panic and let me know that I needed to put something in the center of my cake to bake it all the way through! She even showed me a cheap tool I had at home to get the job done. That tid bit alone saved me hours of tears! Then she helped me find the spindles and cardboard bases I would need for each layer (which I was not planning on doing dowels/spindles or cardboard bases originally. I had planned to just set each layer directly on the previous layer!). The biggest thing that blew my mind was that I explained to Jennifer that the groom was very picky with frosting and didn't like traditional buttercream frosting, so I had found a different recipe online that was mainly butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar. She explained that it would probably curdle in the 91 degree heat and melt/sluff off in the heat, sitting on a table at a wedding for potentially hours. Of course, I spiraled into a panic attack, BUT THEN she sent me the BEST cream cheese frosting recipe I have ever tasted. It still contained shortening to help it harden, and margarine instead of butter, but everyone was highly impressed with the flavor! The negatives (which are not enough to make me drive all the way out to Miles Cake in Clinton Township, but still things that are noteworthy): The place is certainly outdated HOWEVER, I will say that I can't imagine the cost to update a place like that and still be able to pay your workers, so I totally understand their dilemma between updating or not updating it. My biggest complaint is that I have gone in for some smaller items lately and they no longer carry that item or they no longer have stock available. While they have a website it doesn't show what they offer, which is sometimes upsetting, as there is no way to know if you are gonna find what you need until you go in there (I'm sure you can call, but sometimes the thing you are looking for, you want to see the specific colors, or sizes for comparison). Jennifer's help obviously outweighed any negative I could find and I'm incredibly grateful. read more

UPDATE: Picked up the edible images today. I am even more not pleased than I was yesterday. The images...look...like rice paper. or the quality thereof. From what I can tell, they are using a very very very old ink jet printer...and...wow. I cannot believe I have to use these images on a cake. I honestly feel embarrassed about them. I told the workers I was not happy with the quality and all they could offer were excuses like, "nobody else has said anything before" "we used the highest quality setting..." "well the faces in the picture are very small so its hard to get that kind of detail" to top it off the owners were "at the shooting range" so no one could even give me a discount. not only were the faces in the photo unrecognizable, even the larger, bold, pop-art soccer balls I chose had blurry edges. And the fondant paper isn't even white, its a muted yellow. for 20 dollars per 7X9 I have never felt so ripped off before in my life. read more

Went there today to look at Christmas candy boxes and tools with my daughter. It was our first time there. We drove 20 minutes and the experience wasn't pleasant. I asked one of the worker about what boxes would be right. She basically just pointed to the area. When I went up to the counter to ask a price for bulk with my daughter the employee quoted one price for the amount and then said something different. At that point we took the smaller amount for the cheaper price. I just hope that the size we saw works because I'm not sure if they accept returns. read more

Looks can be very deceiving, and that's the case with Heinrich's. The place is small, dingy, dated and a bit cramped. It's hit or miss with the employees. But this place is a true gem. They have a ton of supplies, things I couldn't even find on Amazon, plus the prices can't be beat. The staff was probably some of the least helpful people I've ever met. My 11 month old son probably could have answered my questions better than they did. When I asked them a question, they stared at me like zombies. I had to explain what I was trying to do multiple times and I got a different answer for my questions every time. This business needs to get it together. The employees were incredibly rude and weren't knowledgeable about their own products. I could have overlooked these things (and how dirty the store is) due to the fact cake supply stores are few and far between in this area, however, when the employee fails to put everything you bought into the bag it really is quite upsetting. Not receiving the specialised items you borrowed a car and made a special trip to buy, because of a lack of organization or whatever, really ruins the day. You could be great, but you aren't. Thanks for the help! I went in there this morning to find a box for some pumpkin bars that I am making. The staff was useless!!!! I tried to get help from three people and basically was treated like I was an interruption of their work. Here is one of the first rules of retail "a customer is the REASON for your work, not an interruption of it". I guess I will just have to drive out to Miles on Hall Road, which is by far my first choice, but as the cashier told me, "sometime you gotta do what you gotta do" Remember that when you are fling for unemployment because you have driven all your customers away. I like this place for the things I need here. I enjoy decorating cakes and pastries, and making chocolate, and this place is close by. I've read some of the reviews and it appears that their edible image services are bad; so I wouldn't recommend them for that. Love this little place for cake and baking specific items. It's not fancy, and could probably use a good scrubbing, but for hard to find items and sheer variety of high quality cake decorating products (lots of colors of food dyes and chocolates!) this place can't be beat. The staff isn't very friendly, but they are knowledgable if you have a question. read more

The oldest white lady is rude! She grabbed my autistic son and threatened to call the police on him for playing with a pack of lollipop sticks she admitted that he did not try to stick them in his pocket or conceal them in any way in an effort to to try to still them or anything he was just playing with them. She grabbed him and pulled his coat and told me next time keep my child with me! She continued to get loud I offered to buy the lollipop sticks they were only a dollar. She continued to try to engage me and I walked away. I've seen other kids pick things up and put them in their mouths etc but she chose to say something to my son. As a 3 year customer I more then likely won't go back and will encourage my other baker friends to take their money elsewhere read more

Great group of Ladies working here. BUT...beware of the owner. She has a nasty attitude even toward her employees. Rude to them in front of customers, talks down to them, even when she is the one who is wrong or made a mistake. Don't know how they put up with that! Lots of cool molds and ideas here. I have gone to this place for years and they do have the basics I need. I am sad to say, though, I will not be going back. On several occasions, I have been in there and heard a woman either scolding employees or just being plain rude. Last week, I was in there and I could hear yelling. The same woman was on the phone with a customer telling them they did not know what they were talking about and she wanted to know if they ever made a cake themselves. I know not every customer is right, but a customer is a customer. She was cussing as well. ( I was on the other side of the store and could here her) It got to the point where I was actually uncomfortable being in the store. As a customer, I do not appreciate that. I did ask the cashier why the owner would tolerate that. She told me that the woman IS the owner. I refused to spend any money there at that point. I usually don't complain about things but this is just not a way to treat people. read more
